Good afternoon, and welcome to WaltonLane for today’s Southern CombinationDivision Two fixture against Hurstpierpoint. We extend a warm welcome to our visitorsplayers, officials and supporters who havemade the journey across the county fortoday’s game, in addition to match referee,Chris White from Felpham, and hope theyall enjoy their short stay here at WaltonLane.Today marks our first home fixture of 2016,with the last three week’s against AFCVarndeanians, Westfield and Billingshurstfalling foul of frozen and waterloggedpitches. Our last action on January 9 saw defeat inthe Sussex Intermediate Cup against alively Lewes development squad. It conspired to be a classic ‘game of twohalves’ on the 3G as Lewes’ ‘Rookery’ground - despite starting much thestronger side and taking the lead throughcaptain, James Wilson - we succumbed tomounting Lewes pressure in the secondhalf, with an equaliser on 70 minutes, before being twice caught on the counterlate on.I think a few of the boys would have liked achance to play at Lewes main Ryman set-upat The Dripping Pan, but given all the rainwe’ve had, had the tie been on grass itwould have almost certainly have beencalled off.On that note, today is only the thirdDivision 2 game we’ve played in the spaceof two months (Ferring on Nov 28 andClymping on Dec 28 if anyone’s asking!)given a mixture of our cup progress, combined with walkovers and the weather.
Hurstpierpoint come in to today’s gamelooking to climb away from the basement ofDivision 2, having struggled since making areturn to their previous name - parting wayswith Burgess Hill Albion after just oneseason on a united front.Despite the fresh start off the pitch, it’sbeen a challenging one on it, losing theirseason opener 8-0 at Roffey and shippingtwelve goals in their last three Division 2outings – although made a fist of their lastfixture – a 5-3 defeat at Montpelier Villa. The reserve fixture back in October endedin a 4-1 Bosham win – first half goals fromNeil Redman, Marco Giambelardini (2) andAlex Barnes, before Hurstpierpoint got oneback through John Brazil.Danny Mullen’s reserves played two gamesin the space of four days following fiveweeks on the sidelines.A friendly against an Army Artillery XI on the3G at Thorney brought a 4-1 defeat, prior toWest Division action at Selsey on January 23– Sam James the Bosham hero with a hat-trick, as Bosham lead 2-0 before going intothe break 3-2 down.James then scored his eighth of the season– and sixth in his last four – early in thesecond to earn the Robins a point. There is a free heart screening at St Mary’sPrimary School, Bognor Regis on Saturday,March 19 organised by Gabbie Broadhurst –mother to former Robin, David Green, whotragically passed away due to anundiagnosed heart condition in 2010, agedjust 19. Anyone aged between 14-35 iseligible. To register your place, visit:www.testmyheart.org and scroll down tothe Bognor listing. We can also confirm our end of seasonpresentation will take place on Saturday,May 21 at Bosham Village Hall from7pm-11pm.Remember that the clubhouse is open withkitchen serving hot refreshments, licensedbar, and TV showing the scores.Enjoy the game,
SCFA Intermediate Cup – 5th Round
By Alan PriceThe Robins’ run in the SussexIntermediate cup came to a soggy endthis week at Lewes U21’s, as they wereeventually over-ran on the 3G surface atthe Rookery.Bosham went into the game with a lackof match time behind them due to therecent inclement weather, and knewthat the task before them would betough.Head coach, Graham Vick, rallied thetroops in the dressing room before kick-off and it seemed to work, at least for awhile.Bosham started strongly and Louis Bellwas the first to test the keeping skills ofNathan Stroomberg and bought out thebest in the Lewes keeper with a raspingeffort that Stroomberg expertly tippedover the bar.Graeme Dowden then went very closewith an effort from a tight angle andJake Lafferty almost got a sight of goalbut was denied by a well timedchallenge from Jack Troak. The U21’s were struggling to find theirfeet in the match and Bosham keeper,Kieran Magee was having an easy halfwith the reds back line - including theexcellent Callum Fewell - having noproblems in thwarting any advances ontheir goal. The deadlock was broken after twentyminutes and it was the Robins who tookthe deserved lead.
Lewes failed to deal with a corner andthe ball came out to reds captain, JamesWilson, who needed no secondinvitation to fire an exquisite half volleyback, through the crowd and into thebottom corner of the net.The reds continued to press and couldhave doubled their lead before thebreak but finishing let them down so thehosts were still very much alive with thesecond half still to come.Lewes immediately started to see a lotmore of the ball and the Boshamdefence began to creak as the pressuremounted.Jack Whitmore went close when hiseffort was deflected wide by Blanshardto keep Bosham in front, however theyouthfulness of the U21’s and lack ofmatch fitness would eventually comeback to haunt the reds in the finalquarter of the match.First, George Laughlin rounded off aswift counter to break into the area andfire low passed the outstretched hand ofMagee.Lewes again broke conclusively to givethe hosts the lead, courtesy of IveanStrong - slamming the ball home at thesecond attempt, following a low crossfrom Leon Dramis. Finally, Okwute Izuchukwu got the goalthat his performance deserved as hepowered through an increasinglydispirited defence to slot home to endthe match as a contest. The heavens then opened leaving bothsides soggy at the end and Lewes U21’sto celebrate passage to the semi-finalsand a deserved victory.
