The Physical Education Department is progressing nicely so far this year. With one

quarter coming to an end, the fitness classes have already completed about seven units

including fitness gram testing, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, archery, football, rugby, fitness

stations week, and handball. The fitness classes have also completed four chapter re-

views out of the Fitness for Life textbook. The weight training and elective classes are

also moving along productively with giving students plenty of opportunities to stay fit

and active.

As we continue to move along throughout the year, there are a few things that you

should know. First, the fitness students are going to the computer lab to enter fitness

gram results. This will produce a print out of each fitness student’s fitness levels for

the five health related fitness components. The five health related fitness components

are body composition, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance, and

muscular strength. The fitness gram print out will give specific information about each

test and give suggestions on how to improve fitness levels if they are not in the healthy

fitness zone. Please take the time to review the print out and discuss the results with

your child.

Secondly, with registration for next year just around the corner, the Physical Education

Department is looking to increase student participation in our elective classes, espe-

cially among our female population and athlete population. Currently, team sports and

weight training are the only two choices for Physical Education electives. There are

only two team sports sections and one weight training section. Furthermore, the par-

ticipation of females in these electives is less than 2%. The Physical Education De-

partment is in the process of trying to remedy this problem. Some ideas are to create

additional weight training sections for athletes. If you are an athlete, you will be

highly encouraged to participate in at least a semester long weight training course.

This will help our teams become more fit and competitive. This also gives the student

athlete the opportunity to exercise when it may not be possible outside of school. Also,

we are interested in creating an introductory dance class. This will create more oppor-

tunities for our students, and it can satisfy a fine arts credit while getting benefits of

physical activity. So, if you feel that these initiatives are beneficial, or if you have any

questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Department Chair of Physical Educa-

tion, Bradley Eastham.

I would like to thank Becca Moyer and Tim Gavin - they are doing an excellent job

providing our students an opportunity to exercise in the weight room after school as a

part of our weight training intramural program.

Lastly, if you are interested in reading an article that relates to providing more opportu-

nities in unique ways, and understanding the benefits of physical activity and weight

training for all athletes, please read the attached article. http://espn.go.com/blog/high-

school/girl/post/_/id/462/girls-tackling-football-across-the-country.

Senior Interview Day On Thursday, November 7, all Towson High seniors will be participating

in our Senior Interview Day. This annual event affords seniors the oppor-

tunity to engage in a realistic interview experience with local business pro-

fessionals. Interviews will be held on campus at the THS media center and

will be scheduled throughout the day.

While the students have been prepped for interview attire and etiquette, we

would ask that they make sure they arrive on November 7 with business

interview attire and several copies of their resumes printed on quality pa-

per. We are looking forward to seeing this year’s seniors continue Tow-

son’s ongoing “tradition of excellence.”
