Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
In the next two months, as we work on the congregation budget for 2014 and the fall stewardship campaign, we at CTS do have to face the reality that the budget is going to be very tight next year. With that knowledge comes the temptation to think primarily in terms of scarcity. Will we have enough for that? Maybe we can't really afford to do.... What will we cut back on? But we aren't just talking and working and living in a monetary economy when we come together as a community in Christ. In God's economy, (the economy made up of all of the resources and gifts given to us by God), there is not scarcity, but abundance. There is no limit to the amount God loves us. God isn't stingy with the gifts the Spirit gives to us. God has given this congregation an abundance of creativity, curiosity, and compassion. God's given us tenacity and conviction. God has given us the means of grace and worship, which feeds and nurtures our spirits and so much more that can't ever be laid out on a spreadsheet in black and red. The large pot of money that might make it all easy may not have fallen into our laps, but God's grace and mercy and love have come to us completely undeserved and in ways that are extravagant and generous. In that, there is much that we can share and in which we can continue to grow in faith and love, even when the finances are tight. God's generosity and grace are far greater than our fears or worries about scarcity. With God's help, CTS will continue to be a community that overflows with good news, welcome, love, and hope. "From God's fullness we have all received grace upon grace." (John 1:16) "I came that you might have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10b) "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." (Romans 15:13) Pastor Kari Parsons

Gaithersburg HELP Walks There are 2 events in which CTS members will have an opportunity to support Gaithersburg HELP. Saturday, September 21, 2013 there is a walk called Neighbor Helping Neighbor at Bohrer Park from 8:30-10:30 a.m. On Sunday, September 22, 2013 we will have a mini walk during education time at CTS. We will walk around the block carrying our banner as a visible sign to the community to support Neighbor Helping Neighbor. Registration forms and waivers are on the bulletin board and in the Footnotes. For more information contact Joann Eastlack or Elizabeth Shannon.
September Book Club O Pioneers! by Willa Cather Book 1 of the Prairie Trilogy of Novels. O Pioneers! tells the story of the Bergsons, a family of Swedish immigrants in the farm country near the fictional town of Hanover, Nebraska, at the turn of the 20th century. The main character, Alexandra Bergson, inherits the family farmland when her father dies, and she devotes her life to making the farm a viable enterprise at a time when other immigrant families are giving up and leaving the prairie. (Barnes and Noble)
Join Us for September Koinonia Meetings Come meet with your fellow CTS members at one of our September sessions. If you can't make your regular group, join any one. Saturday, Sept 21, 3:00 pm at the Eastlack home Monday, Sept 23, 7:30 pm at the Backus home Friday, Sept 27, 8:00 pm at the Mayer home Saturday, Sept 28, 8:00 pm at the Garvey home We will talk about the fall stewardship campaign for the 2014 budget with the theme of how we can be increasingly frugal so we can be increasingly generous. As many of our members, friends, neighbors, and families face financial challenges, let's talk about what we can do to help, whether with our time, talents, or financial contributions.

JOIN US: LUTHERAN DISASTER RELIEF OPPORTUNITIES
October - November 2013
If you’re ready to “lend a hand” to victims of past hurricanes (Irene, Lee, and Sandy), join members of Lutheran Disaster Relief crews from Montgomery County, to help restore/replace/rebuild homes and businesses in Pennsylvania and Crisfield, MD. The first trip in the planning stages is for October 14-18, 2013 (Columbus Day holiday is the 14th). At this time it is not known which county in Pennsylvania is in the most need of our help; more information will be given in communiqués and posted on the CTS bulletin board by early September. Lodging and some meals will be provided by the hosting church in Pennsylvania for that week. If you can help for any part of that week, please contact Polly Brody. Registration is necessary to join the crew for this trip. The Disaster Relief trip to Crisfield, MD (fishing community hard-hit by Hurricane Sandy) will be Nov. 11-15, 2013. If you can serve for part or all of that week, please contact Polly Brody; we may begin serving the weekend before Veterans Day—but that is not confirmed yet. Registration is also needed for this trip, unless you have served in previous Lutheran Disaster Relief trips. Rebuilding skills are welcome, but if you have only yourself and a willing spirit, we will find good work for you—unskilled labor is very welcome! Please contact me as soon as possible if you want to “lend a hand.” Polly Brody ([email protected] or 301-717-0480)

Fall 2013 Confirmation Come Join Us – All Are Welcome!
This fall, the confirmation class will be learning about Lutheran Doctrine. In particular, we will look at what it means to live as a Christian with a Lutheran way of seeing, of hearing, of teaching and of following. Using Daniel Erlander’s book, Baptized, We Live: Lutheranism as a Way of Life, we will look at each of these “ways” and try to understand what is Lutheran Christianity -- what do we have in common with other Christians and what is unique about Lutheran Christians.
We will do the bulk of our learning during our retreat, November 15 – 17, which will be held at Mar-Lu-Ridge Retreat and Conference Center, Jefferson, MD, just outside Frederick, but we will start our journey on Sunday, November 10 by watching the movie Luther. We would like to invite anyone who is interested in learning more about our identity as Lutherans to join us – both for the film and on retreat. You are welcome to join us for the entire weekend or just for the day on Saturday. If you are interested, or have some questions before committing, please speak with me. We’d love to have you join us as we learn more about “the Lutheran way.” Barbara Harner, Director of Youth and Family Ministry 240-354-1999 New Member Orientation Sessions September 22, 29, and October 6 following the 11:00 service. We’ll meet from approximately 12:30-2:00pm each week and lunch will be provided. If you’ve joined CTS in the past 2 years, if you are interested in joining CTS – or even if you’ve been a member for a long time, I hope that you will join me for one or more of these sessions as we gather to learn about our Shared Stories 9/22, our Shared History 9/29, and our Shared Ministry 10/6. All are welcome. We’ll review some of what it means to be Lutheran, some of the unique things about CTS, we’ll engage in bible study together and learn about the many ways we can share the gifts God has given each of us with the congregation, our community and the world. I hope to see you there, Pastor Kari

Congregation Meeting
Sunday, September 29, 2013
6:00 P.M.
Preliminary Agenda Financial Updates
Stewardship Presentation Property Issues
The meeting will be preceded by the traditional
Congregational dinner beginning at 5:00 p.m.
All members and non-members who have been attending services are encouraged to attend and participate fully in the
life of the CTS community.
Labyrinth Update: Workdays There has been a lot of support already for the creation of the labyrinth. Construction will start on Saturday, September 14th, in the morning. Volunteers will be needed to help excavate the site on the first weekend of work. SSL hours are available for those in 6th-12th grade. Lunch will be provided. If anyone is interested in seeing the size and location, the perimeter is marked in the field by the line of hedges. Thank you for all your support thus far! - Paul Mayer
Council Minutes for August 12, 2013 Steve Garvey opened the meeting at 8:02 p.m. with the lighting of the candle. Pastor Kari led us in prayer.
The August agenda and the July meeting minutes were both approved unanimously.
Pastoral care concerns, visitors, and new members were discussed. A new member class will be held on Sundays 9/22, 9/29, and 10/6 immediately after the late service. Each session will run 90 minutes. It is expected that there will be a number of new members in attendance.
Pastor Kari reported that a group inquired about use of our facilities on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons for a Bible study. Council agreed that Sundays are out of the question.
Steve Garvey reported that Zaycon Foods (a company that distributes food directly from a truck to customers) inquired about a one-time use of our parking lot for delivery to customers in our area on Saturday, October 5, between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. In repayment, they would provide CTS 40 pounds of boneless chicken breasts which we could distribute as we see fit. Council agreed by consensus to this arrangement.
The fall council retreat has been scheduled for September 6 and 7. Chuck Eater reported that expenses are still exceeding income and that we are now on track to be more than one percent above budget. Constitutionally council cannot exceed the approved budget by more than one percent without congregational approval. Chuck also reported that the stewardship committee will be using the 2012 budget as a baseline to develop the 2014 budget. Chuck noted that because he will be away off and on during the next two months reimbursements may be delayed by a few weeks in some cases.
Rob Palmer reported that the fall workday is scheduled for November 2 so that it will occur after the farmers' market is over for the year.
Koinonia leaders will meet on August 15 at the Backus house.
The council policies were approved unanimously with no change from last year. The financial policies were approved unanimously with a single change from last year; gift card recipients no longer need to initial the request when received via parish care ministry. The sexual harassment and misconduct policy was approved unanimously with no change from last year.
The council reviewed plans for the three “God’s Hands. Our work.” projects for Sunday, September 8. There will be three components: knitting and quilting scarves/pillows for homeless shelters/hospitals, letter writing campaign for St. Dysmas, and trash pick-up near the Ride On bus stops along Montgomery Village Avenue near CTS.
The no-smoking anywhere on property policy was reconsidered from the perspective of hospitality to those groups who use our facility. No decision was reached and the topic will be revisited next month.
Pr. Kari reported on her continuing education class at Luther Seminary. In particular, she discussed the need for a safe place for younger adults to discuss personal finances and budgeting.
Chuck Eater passed around faulty wiring that Jay discovered in a baseboard heater in the teen room. The wires, on a 277-volt circuit, had fused together and melted the plastic wire nut, creating both an electrical and a fire hazard. Jay has remedied the situation.
The meeting was adjourned to the common doxology at 9:50 P.M. This summary is based on the draft minutes. An archive of the full minutes (once they have been approved) and the most recent meeting agenda and council reports are available at: http://sdrv.ms/Vn8yAo Respectfully submitted, Mike Mayer
The Community of St. Dysmas: A Lutheran Congregation within the Maryland Prison System
In Matthew 25:34a, 36b, 39-40 we read, “Then the King will say… I was in prison and you came to visit me,’ and to the question, “When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ responded, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Hebrews 13: 3 calls us to “Remember those who are in prison, as if you were together with them in prison.” September 8, 2013 will be “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). On this Sunday, ELCA congregations have been asked to carry out various service projects in their communities. One way we are doing this at CTS is to write letters to the men at the Maryland Correction Facility – Jessup who are members of the Community of St. Dysmas (CSD). On this Sunday, Rev. Gerry Rickel, CSD’s pastor, will join us at our Adult Forum to talk about this unique Lutheran congregation and to guide us in writing these letters. CSD was my teaching parish during my first year in seminary and I am now blessed to be able to serve on CSD’s Council. Timing for this discussion on prison ministry could not be better. On August 12, Attorney General Eric Holder announced a major shift in Federal sentencing policy. In addition, the ECLA not only elected our first female presiding bishop, but they also adopted a social statement on criminal justice among other things, entitled The Church and Criminal Justice: Hearing the Cries. This social statement urges “Synods, congregations, and individuals” to “support and join in ministry to those incarcerated. In addition, the Metropolitan Washington Synod adopted a resolution at the Synod Assembly in July encouraging its members and congregations to designate the third Sunday in
October 2013 and in years following as “Community of St. Dysmas Sunday” by
- Publicizing Community of St. Dysmas Sunday in church communications,
- Inviting congregational members to share their talents of leading worship, providing music, leading Bible studies, assisting with financial record keeping, mentoring and to testify to the ministry in their local congregations enabling awareness of St. Dysmas’ witness among the incarcerated,
- Designating a special offering on that day for the Community of St. Dysmas,
- Considering the addition of the Community of St. Dysmas as a ministry line item in the congregation’s budget and committing to the Community of St. Dysmas with an annual pledge,
- Offering prayers for the members and ongoing ministry of the Community of St. Dysmas,
- Promoting an ongoing awareness of the Community of St. Dysmas within the congregation in the worship and educational settings, through written and spoken communication provided by the Community of St. Dysmas and by inviting the pastor or other St. Dysmas representatives to speak at your Adult Sunday Forum and/or preach at your worship service.
Please join us for this special Adult Sunday Forum on September 8th at 9:50am. We won’t be complete without you. Dave Larrabee

Faith Talk: Confirmation at Home: The topic of this fall’s Confirmation study and retreat is Lutheran theology. Using Daniel Erlander’s book, Baptized, We Live: Lutheranism as a Way of Life, we will look at what it means to live as a Christian with a Lutheran way of seeing, of hearing, of teaching, and of following. One of the characteristics of Lutheranism is its affirmation of paradox. You may be familiar with some of these: we are simultaneously saint and sinner, Christ is both true God and true Man, Law and Gospel, the kingdom is now and not yet, bread and wine/body and blood, and so on. What is a paradox? Can you think of other paradoxes in your life? At the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in August, one of the speakers said that we are “called to be a ‘both/and’ people in an ‘either/or’ world.” What do you think this means? How can we be ‘both/and’? How is the world ‘either/or’? Do you agree / disagree? What does this look like; how do we do this?
Chi Rho 2013: In July, James, Joel, Jericho, and Carson, Tony and Barbara along with 10 other youth and adults from throughout the synod participated in Metro DC Synod’s weeklong service learning event for senior high youth. We spent Monday and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on 2 different demolition projects, clearing the properties to make room for the construction of new houses to commence. On Wednesday, we traveled to Breaks Interstate Park for a day of relaxation and recuperation between the two projects! Through our verse for the week – Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received (1 Peter 4:10) –our theme had us look at gifts – the gifts we’ve been given by God, the gifts we bring to Neon, the gifts we share with each other, the gifts Neon has shared with us, and gifts we brought back home to share with others. When you see them, ask them to share with you about their week!
