Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On Sunday, February 9, we are doing something completely different. It will be Campus Ministry Sunday, • a chance to learn more about the Lutheran Campus Ministry at

the University of Maryland, • an opportunity to support Campus Ministry and encourage this

important outreach to young adults in our area, • and a chance to worship with students from the University of

Maryland, as they enhance our worship with special music from Joyful Noise.

So that as many CTS members as possible can take part, We will have just ONE service at 11:00am on February 9

Preceded by a special Adult Forum at 9:50am.

I hope that you will join us to support Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Maryland with an Adult Forum led by Campus Pastor Ray Ranker, and at the 11:00 service, Joyful Noise, the Campus Ministry Praise Band will serve as our choir, playing a prelude, special music during the offering and communion, and a postlude. CTS’s own Kirsten Petersen is a member of Joyful Noise, so it will also be a chance to see directly how campus ministry serves young adults and keeps them connected to the church. There will also be a chance to contribute to a free will offering in support of campus ministry and to help offset the cost of bringing the musicians to CTS.

The mission of campus ministry in the ELCA is to invite people in academic settings to engage more deeply with the teachings of Jesus Christ and the community that bears his name, so that they can discover and fulfill their vocation as disciples. Campus ministry bears witness to God’s amazing grace within the context of higher education. Sensitive to the pastoral needs of those on campus and engaged in the intellectual discourse of the university, campus ministry strives to communicate the gospel in fresh ways. Through worship, study, fellowship and service, members of the academic community taste the fullness of God’s grace. As expansive as Christ’s love, campus ministry reaches out to all who teach and learn, inviting them to experience the challenge of following Jesus.

I hope that you will come and be a part of learning about and supporting this important outreach to college students.

Yours in Christ, Pastor Kari Parsons

Key Positions Becoming Vacant

Christ the Servant is blessed with members who volunteer to fill key positions within the congregation and when incumbents step aside, other members come forward to take on the tasks. We are confronted with such a situation now because two members will be “retiring” from service. Two volunteers are urgently needed – SOON! Ernie Graf, our Financial Secretary, will resign effective June 2014. The Financial Secretary is affirmed by the congregation at the Spring Congregational Meeting in May. Ernie has served as the Financial Secretary for over six years. The Financial Secretary is a member of the church council and is required to attend the monthly meetings and to make reports to the congregation at Congregational Meetings. Please contact Ernie and me, if you have questions or if you want to volunteer to take on these duties. Wilma Garvey will end her service as being the primary preparer of the service bulletins effective Rally Day 2014 (September 9, 2014). She has been serving in this capacity since 2001 and as she told the Worship Committee, “It is time to pass the duty to someone else.” Please contact Wilma if you have questions about this position. I encourage all members of the congregation to thank both Ernie and Wilma for their service to Christ the Servant. They both are exceptional servants and an example for all of us to note and recognize. Steve Garvey Council President

Bharati Mukherjee's work illuminates a new world of people in migration that has transformed the meaning of "America." Now in a Grove paperback edition, The Middleman and Other Stories is a dazzling display of the vision of this important modern writer. An aristocratic Filipina negotiates a new life for herself with an Atlanta investment banker. A Vietnam vet returns to Florida, a place now more foreign than the Asia of his war experience. And in the title story, an Iraqi Jew whose travels have ended in Queens suddenly finds himself an unwitting guerrilla in a South American jungle. Passionate, comic, violent, and tender, these stories draw us into the center of a cultural fusion in the midst of its birth pangs, yet glowing with the energy and exuberance of a society remaking itself.

New Lutheran Disaster Relief Service Opportunities

Those who have participated in trips to Mississippi, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania and the shores of Maryland (you know who you are!), have been part of the ongoing service of hands-on helping people recover from major natural disasters. More help is needed in 2014...cleaning up in Pennsylvania from the last of the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Irene and Lee, and another trip to Crisfield, Maryland (on the coast, nearly flooded out in Hurricane Sandy) as well as planned trips to New Jersey/New York to help with Sandy clean-up there. If you are interested in serving in this manner, please contact Polly Brody—you don't have to have rebuilding skills—we will train you—but if you are an expert at rebuilding—in any stage—you would be most welcome! All are welcome—just come—we will find work for you! Dennis Luther, one of the coordinators of the Lutheran Disaster Response teams from Montgomery County, from our sister church, Good Shepherd, will be talking with us at the Adult Forum on March 2, 2014. Please join us for this; it will be fun, interesting, and empowering! Polly Brody ([email protected] or 301-717-0480) More information on trips past and future is on the service bulletin board at CTS.

Shelter Week Starts Feb 2nd

We will be providing lunches and dinners at the women’s homeless shelter. Please look at the bulletin board in the hallway to see if there are any meals that are not yet covered. If you have any questions, please contact Dave Larrabee

FAMILY FUN NIGHT

Save the Date! This year's CTS Fun Night will be on Saturday, March 1st, 5:00pm to approximately 8:00pm. The theme this year will be the CTS Olympics in honor of the international winter Olympics that will have just concluded. We will have lots of games for "Olympians" of all ages and skill level but no physical fitness required!! We had so much fun with the games last year, so if you missed it then, here is another chance and if you attended last year you will surely not want to miss the fun this time. Parish life will provide a light dinner, then let your pent-up Olympic dreams run amuck and end with dessert. Be prepared to cheer and laugh yourself silly! See you there!

Upcoming Adult Forums

For most of February we will continue reading and discussing the book, Courage to Think Differently. Titles in quotes are from that book. February 2 - "Needed in Theological Education" February 9 - A Discussion about Campus Ministry February 16 - "Idols in the Church" February 23 - "Something Worth Getting Mad About" March 2 - Denis Luther from Lutheran Disaster Response

Council Minutes for January 13, 2014 Steve Garvey opened the meeting at 8:02 p.m with the lighting of the candle. Pastor Kari led us in prayer. Pastoral care issues, visitors, and new members were discussed. Pastor Kari informed council that she is planning on having a new member class in the February/March time frame and requested that council members attempt to attend at least one of these classes. Pastor Kari noted that she received a very nice thank you note from one of the families who were a recipient of our Secret Santa gifts through “The Dwelling Place.” Pastor Kari reported that at the mutual ministry meeting it was discussed how to best provide her feedback on her performance as pastor. It was decided that feedback should be elicited from congregational members via Koinonia meetings. Joyce Backus will be asked to begin the process of scheduling these meetings. Pastor Kari relayed information about the program “Moving Forward Faster” which will be hosted by Lord of Life in Fairfax on February 12 from 9-3. The presenter is author of the “Surface to Soul.” book we’re using as a council. She will be attending, and as the cost is per congregation, she is inviting anyone else interested to attend with her.

Steve Garvey reported that the building key has been taken back from the Ethiopian bible study group that has been using our facilities for the last few years. Council is in the process of deciding if they will be allowed to resume use of the building and under what conditions a new usage agreement will be accepted. Steve reported that the average monthly attendance in 2013 was 323 people. This is down from 353 per month in 2012, and 334 per month in 2011. Ernie Graf reported that he has sent out 99 year end giving statements: 74 by email and 22 by US post office. He received only a few bounce notices due to incorrect email addresses. He would like to know if anyone failed to receive theirs. Chuck Eater reported that the 2013 books have been closed and on the line items adjustments he made to do so. All in all, we came out OK on the 2013 budget—the final surplus being $11,050. He

discussed the fact that he and Marjorie McClain preformed an inventory of the Equal Exchange stock so that this budget item could be rebaselined for the 2014 budget. Chuck outlined his proposed distribution of the 2013 carryover. Council approved his recommendation unanimously. $5,000 will be carried into the 2014 budget, $248.47 will be used to close negative balances in the 2013 budget, and the remainder $5,801.75 will be transferred into the capital reserve fund (brining the balance to 8% of the operating budget). Rob Palmer voiced some questions/concerns regarding the proper role of our delegates to the Synod Assembly—do they speak for CTS or as individuals. It was explained that we are not voting for people to voice our opinions. We are electing voting members whom we trust to make good decisions. It was noted that it would be nice to have some feedback from the assembly regarding discussions and decisions. Steve Garvey noted that the appropriate medium would probably be Footnotes/communiqués. Tony Kerlavage asked Rob Palmer as to what will happen to the old downstairs door once the new one is installed. Rob is hoping to unload it via FreeCycle, ReStore, or some other reuse mechanism rather than simply taking it to the dump. Leon LaCross reported that he has wrapped up the financial stewardship campaign by sending out thank you notes to all pledging members and is turning his attention now to the upcoming time and talent stewardship campaign. Steve Garvey noted that we need to contact the Montgomery Village Foundation to ensure that everything is in order for next season’s Farmers’ Market. A brief discussion followed as to whether or not the existing agreement needs to be reviewed or revised, in particular the usage fee. Central to this discussion is whether the use of our parking lot provides a service to the community or if this is purely a for-profit business venture. This summary is based on the draft minutes. An archive of the full minutes (once they have been approved) and the most recent meeting agenda and council reports are available at: http://sdrv.ms/Vn8yAo Respectfully submitted, Mike Mayer

Faith Talk: Confirmation at Home: This spring we will be studying the Apostle’s Creed. There are three articles (sections) to the Apostle’s Creed. Last month we talked about believing in general; this month, let’s focus on the First Article: “I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.” What does this mean? You can find Luther’s explanation in The Small Catechism (which can be found in the back of the ELW!), but I’d like you to talk about what this means for you. Use these as conversation starters: “What signs do you see of God’s good creation?” “What role do we play in God’s creation?” “What are some examples of ways we care for creation?” “What are some examples of ways we don’t?” “How is God still creating today?” “If you could change one thing about creation, what would it be?” “In what ways are you creative?”

Souper Bowl of Caring -- On Sunday, February 2, millions of people all over the world will tune in to the Super Bowl football game. There will be parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. In fact, it is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day. At the same time, there will be people worrying about clothing their families, looking for shelter and hoping for a warm meal. Last month, CTS youth invited you to join them in demonstrating God’s love by loving our neighbors through a different kind of bowl, the Souper Bowl of Caring. If you forgot to bring a donation of stew or soup and/or a dollar or two to add to the soup pots for Gaithersburg HELP, don’t worry – the food baskets and donation cans are there every Sunday, waiting for you to help fill them.
