Experience Newfoundland’s charm and geographic diversity from the decks of Adventure C a n a d a ’s s h i p , t h e O c e a n Endeavour, on a ten day cruise circumnavigating Newfoundland. Sailing from St. John’s we stop at three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Red Bay, Labrador, site of a 16th century Basque whaling station; L’Anse Aux Meadows, featuring the only fully interpreted Viking se t t lement in North America; and spectacular Gros Morne National Park with its natural beauty and intriguing geology, one of the few places where the earth's mantle is pushed to the surface. Along the south coast we stop at an outport village to catch a glimpse of a vanishing way of life. At Miawpukek we will be welcomed at a settlement of the Mi’kmaw people. We also visit France with a stop at Saint-Pierre, France’s oldest overseas territory.

The ship provides a front row seat for watching magnificent icebergs, sea birds and whales. There will be many opportunities for learning with lectures and workshops led by expedition staff, including the ROM’s own Dr. Mark Engstrom. And, since Newfoundland is famous for its hospitality, days will be filled with delicious meals and evenings with k i t c h e n p a r t i e s f e a t u r i n g

unforgettable music and stories.Newfoundland has it all – history and culture, natural beauty and a warm welcome for visitors.

ALLURING LAOS,CAMBODIA AND

VIETNAMNovember 5 - 21, 2016

Only a few seats remain for this fascinating journey to Indochina, a region strongly influenced by the cultures of both India and China.

At Luang Prabang experience the Asia of yesteryear with its Buddhist temples and monks clad in saffron robes. Angkor, the ancient capital of the Great Khmer Empire, is a site of immense archaeological significance with awe- insp i r ing , magni f icen t temples and ornate carvings. Vietnam, a country once associated with rich colonial history and the horror of war, is now recognized for its lush landscapes, friendly people and sumptuous cuisine. Vietnamese, Chinese and French influences have shaped Vietnam’s culture, language, gastronomy and architecture.

View the sunset over the Mekong River, discover the temples of Angkor Wat atop an elephant, prepare an authentic Vietnamese meal, craft a silk

lantern, don costumes for an imperial dinner at the Royal Theatre in Hue’s Citadel, sail among the spectacular limestone monoliths of Halong Bay.

In Hue, glimpse the imperial lifestyle at the Citadel, modelled on Beijing’s Forbidden City, or at the magnificent tombs of the Emperors of the Nguyen dynasty. Hanoi, the bustling capital of Vietnam, has lakes, parks and boulevards, reminiscent of the French Colonial influence; in its heart is the old quarter, a maze of winding streets with cafes and small shops.

Three unique countries, they are united by their Buddhist faith, their colonial past and their similar lifestyles. The cuisine is delectable with subtle differences between regions and the French influence ever present in the rich, strong coffee, delicious baguettes and pastries. Join Sara Irwin, past manager of the Asian Collections in the ROM’s Department of World Cultures, on this very special trip.

Ravenna is renowned for the splendid Byzantine mosaics in the Basilica di San Vitale and nearby mausoleum. We stroll the piazzas of romantic Verona. Bologna has not one, but two, leaning towers!

Even by h igh I t a l i an standards, this region is particularly known for its food, such as ragu, balsamic v i n e g a r , P a r m i g i a n o -Reggiano cheese, and wines including Valpolicella and prosecco, so we will be sure to taste as many of the local specialties as we can.

In Xian, visit the Terra Cotta Warriors and have lunch with the staff; afterwards see Qianling, the g randes t Tang mauso leums belonging to the only female Emperor of China, Wu Zetian.

Chengdu, the ancient capital of Sichuan, is famous for its fiery gastronomy. Here we have the unusual experience of pampering the pandas before venturing off to see the 233 foot high Leshan Giant Buddha. A high-speed train ride takes us to Chongqing and on to Dazu, where there are 50,000 carvings located in rock shrines or as rock reliefs, dating back to 650 CE and depicting Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs. Enjoy a four-day Yangtze cruise; admire the imposing Three Gorges.

Yunnan’s fertile valleys are strewn with 25 different ethnic

minority villages. Linger in Lijiang, home to the Naxi; their ancient rituals and Dongba culture are now believed to be a vanishing way of life.

Our l a s t s top wi l l be in cosmopolitan Hong Kong, always an intriguing place to explore. Here, where East meets West, is a unique blend of Chinese heritage and former colonial influences.

Dr. Chen Shen, ROM Senior Curator, will arrange our private access to the grounds of some of the UNESCO sites and also will arrange behind-the-scenes visits in Sichuan, Sanxingdui and Hong Kong museums.
