Spring 2013
Welcome to our Spring 2013 catalogue, the first season of our exciting new sales partnership with Abrams & Chronicle Books in London.
Our lead exhibition title on David Bowie provides a spectacular start to the year. Produced with never-before-granted access to Bowie’s personal archives of performance costume, design drawings and photography, it promises to be a unique look at a pioneering artist and cultural icon.
Memory Palace is an innovative and beautiful collaboration between best-selling author Hari Kunzru, the V&A, and leading typographers, illustrators and graphic designers. It translates Kunzru’s new fiction into a visual experience.
Our best-selling fashion titles are joined by 80s Fashion, which accompanies a V&A exhibition that explores the links between style, club culture and couture. 2012’s hit Ballgowns will be available in paperback for the first time, while Traditional Jewellery in Nineteenth-Century Europe will be a key addition to our popular jewellery list.
Treasures of the Royal Courts celebrates a major collaboration between the V&A and the Kremlin, investigating the cultural exchanges between the courts of Britain and Russia. A new title in our academic list, Carvings, Casts and Collectors, brings together new research by some of the world’s leading experts on Renaissance sculpture.
Edward Bawden’s London and diary are joined by the delightful Edward Bawden Colouring Book, which should entertain children and adults alike.
We have a great deal to interest all Arts and Crafts enthusiasts, with a completely revised and updated edition of William Morris Textiles, a new V&A Pattern book celebrating C.F.A. Voysey, and the hugely acclaimed International Arts and Crafts arriving in paperback.
Finally, our digital programme continues to expand, with all our fashion autobiographies and fashion style guide series (see page 21) now available as e-books.

David Bowie is a pioneering artist and performer whose career has spanned nearly 50 years and brought him international acclaim. He has sold over 140 million albums, and been cited as a major influence on contemporary artists and designers working across the creative arts.
This is the first book to be granted access to Bowie’s personal archive of performance costume, ephemera and original design artwork by Bowie, and brings it together to present a completely new perspective on his creative work and collaborations. The book traces his career from its beginnings in London, through the breakthroughs of Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and on to his impact on the larger international tradition of twentieth-century avant-garde art. Essays by V&A curators on Bowie’s London, image and influence on the fashion world are complemented by Christopher Frayling on film; Howard Goodall on musicology; Camille Paglia on gender and decadence; and Jon Savage on Bowie’s relationship with William Burroughs and his fans.
Victoria Broackes is a curator of Theatre & Performance at the V&A. Geoffrey Marsh is Director of the V&A Theatre Collections.

BAROQUEStyle in the Age of Magnificence
Michael Snodin & Nigel Llewellyn, eds
The complexity and sophistication of Baroque art, developed through the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, could be understood as an attempt to move, arrest and overwhelm the viewer with beauty. Taking examples from all media and genres, this comprehensive book, now available in paperback, explores this emotionally powerful and geographically pervasive style, tracing its development from Rome, centre of papal and princely power. Carefully selected and rarely seen objects from public and private collections illustrate traditions of ornament, performance and visual art, while stunning spreads examine how churches and palaces became showcases for the pomp and splendour of Baroque art.
Michael Snodin is Head of the Strawberry Hill Trust and was previously Senior Research Fellow at the V&A. He is the author of Design and the Decorative Arts: Britain 1500–1900 (with John Styles, V&A 2001) and Exploring Architecture (with Eleanor Gawne, V&A 2004). Nigel Llewellyn is Head of Research at Tate and his publications include Funeral Monuments in Post-Reformation England.

INTERNATIONAL ARTS AND CRAFTSKaren Livingstone & Linda Parry, eds
Now in paperback, this lavishly illustrated and extensively researched book is a major contribution to a wider understanding of Arts and Crafts and an invaluable visual record of an ever-popular era of design. Leading scholars explore the varied characteristics of the regional, national and international manifestations of Arts and Crafts, looking at the work of many of the movement’s leading designers. Additional material on photography, architecture and gardens, and the inclusion of painting and sculpture as integral to the movement, as well as the focus on its later emergence in Japan, all contribute to enriching our understanding and appreciation of Arts and Crafts.

WILLIAM MORRIS TEXTILESLinda Parry William Morris Textiles was the first comprehensive
survey of the many hundreds of original, colourful textiles produced by William Morris and the two commercial companies he founded and managed. To this day it remains the authority in the field, and this revised edition has been completely rewritten and expanded with beautiful new photography. Linda Parry provides new insight into the embroideries, printed and woven textiles, carpets and tapestries produced by Morris & Co., giving in-depth information about their design and manufacture. The varied, often highly specialized processes involved are discussed in detail, as are Morris’s working methods.
Linda Parry is former Deputy Keeper of the Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion at the V&A, where she worked for over thirty years. She is the author of Textiles of the Arts and Crafts Movement (1988) and British Textiles from 1850 to 1900 (1993), and editor of William Morris (1996). Among the exhibitions she curated at the V&A are Textiles of the Arts and Crafts Movement (1988) and William Morris (1996); she also acted as consultant on International Arts and Crafts (V&A 2005).

A new work of fiction by Hari Kunzru, best-selling author of Gods Without Men, forms the basis of this innovative book and exhibition, in which reading a story is translated into a three-dimensional visual experience by leading typographers, illustrators and graphic designers.
Hari Kunzru has conjured a dark vision of a future in which not just books but remembering itself is banned and a small group of renegade memorialists is all that stands in the face of total oblivion. From the point of view of one of their incarcerated members, Memory Palace takes us through his fragmented memories as he lies trapped in his cell, clinging to the belief that without memory civilization is doomed. An essay by the exhibition’s curators, Laurie Britton Newell and Ligaya Salazar, unpicks the intentions and process behind this innovative project, while specially commissioned work by Robert Frank Hunter and drawings from the exhibition’s collaborators illustrate the book.
Hari Kunzru is the author of the novels The Impressionist (2002), Transmission (2004), My Revolutions (2007) and Gods Without Men (2011). His work has been translated into 21 languages and won him prizes including the Somerset Maugham Award, the Betty Trask Prize and a British Book Award. Laurie Britton Newell and Ligaya Salazar are curators of Contemporary Programmes at the V&A.
EDWARD BAWDEN COLOURING BOOKEdward Bawden This charming colouring book features a selection of some
of Bawden’s most endearing linocuts, freshly printed for a new generation to enjoy. From the late 1950s Bawden used linoleum as an alternative to traditional ink and paper drawing, and the practice did much to further his unique, graphic style. The cuts in this selection illustrate a wide range of activities and characters from history and fairytales. From London monuments, to lions and tigers, to princesses and knights, there is something for everyone.
Edward Bawden (1903–1989) was born in Essex and studied at the School of Art in Cambridge and the Royal College of Art, where he was taught by Paul Nash. As well as linocuts and landscape paintings, Bawden worked on book illustrations and commercial graphics. During the Second World War he served as an Official War Artist.
> Follows success of V&A best-sellers Edward Bawden’s London and Edward Bawden Diary
> Plenty of appeal for children and adults
A delightful selection of Edward Bawden’s linocuts for colouring, from lions to princesses!

GRINLING GIBBONSAnd the Art of Carving
David Esterly
Grinling Gibbons (1648–1721), the greatest of decorative woodcarvers, is seen in this study through the eyes of a fellow carver. His flamboyant cascades of lifelike blossoms, fruits, foliage, birds and fish dominated English interiors of the late seventeenth century – in royal palaces, churches and cathedrals, and great country houses.
David Esterly’s first-hand experience of limewood foliage carving gives him unprecedented insight into Gibbons’s method and technique. Unique photographs illustrate these procedures, while spectacular interior shots show the carving in its original setting. Tools, workshop practice, materials and finishes are also discussed in detail.
David Esterly is a professional limewood foliage carver in the Gibbons tradition, who played a key role in restoration work at Hampton Court Palace following the disastrous fire of 1986. He curated the V&A exhibition Grinling Gibbons and the Art of Carving (1998) and is the author of The Lost Carving (2012).

15jan – jun 2013 new books
This exciting book explores one of the most diverse and innovative periods in British fashion and showcases the work of some of the decade’s leading designers – including Betty Jackson, Leigh Bowery, John Galliano, Body Map, Vivienne Westwood and many others.
Highlighting the decade’s extraordinarily creative interaction between fashion and popular music, the book shows how both catwalk and club fashions were interpreted for a wider audience through the striking photography and innovative graphic designs of key magazines. 80s Fashion includes interviews and original archive material from practitioners such as Wendy Dagworthy and Paul Smith that casts new light on the designs of the decade.
Sonnet Stanfill is curator of twentieth-century and contemporary fashion at the V&A. She curated the displays Ossie Clark (2003) and New York Fashion Now (2007) and co-curated the exhibition Ballgowns: British Glamour since 1950 and wrote its accompanying book (V&A 2012).

BALLGOWNSBritish Glamour since 1950
Oriole Cullen & Sonnet Stanfill, photography by David Hughes
Now in paperback, Ballgowns presents interpretative photographs by David Hughes of 60 years of British ballgowns, including designs by Alexander McQueen, Bellville Sassoon, Erdem, Gareth Pugh, Stella McCartney and Zandra Rhodes.
The social season of debutante parties and private balls, weddings and charity events has long provided Britain’s fashion designers with opportunities to design elaborate, tour de force eveningwear. In more recent years the ballroom has been replaced by the red carpet. Though the context has changed, the ballgown remains a staple in many designers’ collections and continues to serve as an expression of status, protocol and taste, while simultaneously embodying elements of drama and fantasy.
Sonnet Stanfill is curator of twentieth-century and contemporary fashion at the V&A. She curated the displays Ossie Clark (2003) and New York Fashion Now (2007). Oriole Cullen is curator of modern textiles and fashion at the V&A. She was the curator and co-author of Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones (V&A 2009) and author of V&A Pattern: Pop Patterns (V&A 2011).

TRADITIONAL JEWELLERYIn Nineteenth-Century Europe
Jane Perry
Although less well-known today, European jewellery – jewellery worn with traditional or national costume – was highly fashionable in nineteenth-century Britain. This book draws together a wide selection of beautiful pieces, originating from across the continent – from Iceland in the north to Cyprus off the shores of Asia – to demonstrate the wonderful variety of this jewellery. Spectacular examples include gilded Norwegian wedding crowns and extravagant golden crosses of Normandy, ornate earrings of Spain and Italy, and imposing filigree clasps from the Balkans. The book illustrates how the jewellery was originally worn with traditional dress, and explores its popularity in the nineteenth century.
Jane Perry is a visiting scholar at the V&A, involved in cataloguing and studying its extensive collection of European traditional jewellery. She has written many articles on aspects of nineteenth-century jewellery and is the author of A Collector’s Guide to Peasant Silver Buttons (2007).

CARVINGS, CASTS AND COLLECTORSThe Art of Renaissance Sculpture
Peta Motture, Emma Jones, Dimitrios Zikos, eds
This volume brings together new research by some of the world’s leading experts, exploring the artistic production and cultural context of Renaissance sculpture from Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise to the small bronzes of Giambologna and his followers. The essays cover a range of sculptural materials and forms to cast fresh light on the artists, their creative and collaborative processes, and those who commissioned, owned and responded to their work. The papers were originally presented at a two-day conference at the V&A in November 2010 as part of the Robert H. Smith Renaissance Sculpture Programme.
Peta Motture is Senior Curator of Sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She has published widely on medieval and later sculpture and co-curated several exhibitions. Emma Jones is a Ph.D candidate at Cambridge University, whose research focuses on the commissioning of sculpture and workshop practice in sixteenth-century Venice. Dimitrios Zikos is an independent art historian. He has published extensively on Florentine and Flemish sculptors, and collaborates with the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, where he has co-curated several exhibitions.
