The Kamloops Farmers’ Market is back for another summer. Every Saturday and Wednesday head downtown

for some fresh eats and unique finds. Among the over 100 participating businesses the market

always welcomes new agricultural vendors as well as new artisans.Everything from radishes to kale, carrots to zucchini is

available throughout the summer. Dry herbs, fresh herbs, seasoned butter spreads, several different kinds of tomatoes and berries — some you might never have hear of — are for sale. The market also boasts a selection of meats including poultry, different kinds of sausage, turkey, lamb, pork and beef.

You can find almost everything you need for a meal at the market.

Among the new artisans there are homemade soaps and lotions, some made from organic beeswax. New honey vendors from Lumby and Merritt have joined the many crafters and bakers. Massage therapy and acupuncture booths bring products, as well. Find infused oils, sewing, jewelry, garden sculptures and art in many forms amongst the crafters.

Not every vendor attends each week but many appear at both the Saturday and Wednesday market. A vendor list is kept up to date at kamloopsfarmersmarket.com, where you can check who will appear each week.

The Saturday market often features a live band. If you need to drive, check the Seymour Street parkade where parking is free every Saturday.

The Saturday market is held in the 200 block of St. Paul St. and the Stuart Wood schoolyard from 8 a.m. to noon until Oct. 29. The Wednesday market is held in the 400 block of Victoria St. from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Oct. 26.

Flavours Trail West showcases a variety of fresh and bold treats including local, English style cider from Left Field Cider Co. and terroir-driven wines from Fort Berens Estate Winery.

Be sure to plan for a lunch stop at the winery’s Ponderosa Kitchen.

Completing the natural loop back to Kamloops, check in at Horsting’s Farm Market and grab one of their famous fruit pies.

If it’s east you’re headed, more amazing wines prevail at Harper’s Trail and Sagewood Wineries located on the banks of the South Thompson River.

Nestled in the trees between Adams and Shuswap Lakes lies this pristine river which is fully protected within the boundaries of Roderick-Haig Brown Provincial Park.

Haig-Brown, an avid fi sherman and conservationist, had the foresight to protect this valuable but fragile resource. The Pacifi c Sockeye Salmon industry depends heavily on the Adams River, as it has the largest Sockeye spawning population in the world. Heavy use of the river for transporting logs was decimating the salmon stocks. Thanks to conservation efforts the Sockeye return every fall to spawn; most prevalent every four years when the river teems with over 2 million red coloured fi sh.

The Adams River is also a wonderful playground for whitewater enthusiasts. Keep in mind though, that while the many sweepers and logjams are ideal for spawning beds, they pose a dangerous hazard to the inexperienced. The class II and III rapids offer great fun for kayakers and rafters. In summer the water is warm and inviting. The nozzle like “Gorge” is always a rush! For family adventure don’t miss an Adams River raft trip. Looking for more excitement? Adams River Rafting, Canada’s original cataraft company, offers trips with their exclusive pontoon style catarafts. Adams River Rafting has been operating since1983.

Kamloopa Powwow has grown into one of the largest celebrations of First Nations culture in Western Canada.

It represents many years of stories and events of Aboriginal culture and is recognized as one of the best and most well-run powwows of its kind. Kamloopa Powwow is celebrated over three days at the Secwepemc Powwow grounds alongside the South Thompson River, running this year from July 29 to July 31.

Kamloopa Powwow attracts people from many places, primarily from across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington and Idaho.

At the first powwow in 1979 there was one drum and maybe 20 dancers. Today, the powwow plays host to around 20 drums, hundreds of dancers, awards over $77,000 in prize payout and attracts upwards of 20,000 attendees. This year marks the seventh annual drumming contest, which pays out $30,000 in prize money to five drumming groups.

Categories include traditional, chicken, jingle, grass, fancy feather and fancy shawl for adult, teen and junior. In addition to the regular dances, there is a selection of specials, which are hosted by families. Chief and council host specials each year, which signifies council recognizing visitors.

Miss Kamloopa also hosts a special every year. A grand entry takes place everyday, at 7 p.m. on the opening night and then at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Powwow welcomes non First Nations people to partake, learn and enjoy. Kamloopa Powwow is known for its special competition that invites non-Aboriginal people to try the traditional dances. The event also features First Nations arts and crafts booths.

HARPER’S TRAILTaste the untamed land of Harpers Trail — Kamloops’ first winery with 100 per cent estate-grown grapes from the banks of the South Thompson River. Framed by the dramatic landscape of rugged hoodoos, rolling hills of sage and the picturesque Thompson river, a visit to the winery is as much a visual experience as it is a tasting sensation. The winery was pioneered by Ed and Vicki Collett and named after pioneer rancher Thaddeus Harper.

SAGEWOOD WINERYTaste wines made from the oldest commercial vineyard in Kamloops. With the planting of the vineyard in 2005, Sagewood winery is the result of years of dedication, patience and attention to detail. Grapes nestled on the slopes of the South Thompson River are hand-picked and meticulously crafted. Visitors to the family-owned and operated winery will enjoy an intimate experience with the owners, hear their stories and taste the passion in every pour.

MONTE CREEK RANCHForging a new era, Kamloops’ newest winery offers the next frontier in quality B.C. winemaking. Fresh, lively wines with legend-in-the-making Thompson Valley brightness. Straddling the Thompson River, Monte Creek has two vineyard sites on either side and opened a state-of-the-art winery and visitor experience this summer and its first vintage in 2015.

PRIVATO VINEYARD AND WINERYThe result of years of patience, care and quite passion, Privato embodies what it mess to experience a private heaven. Crafted only in small quantities, Privato specializes in premium single vineyard burgundy styled wines housed in a stunning setting that matches the quality of the wine. B.C.’s newest wine region is taking flight in Kamloops. The Kamloops Wineries Association was created in fall of 2014 to

bring all four of the wineries together to collaborate and collectively market and promote the Kamloops wine region as a whole. Touring the Kamloops wine trail is set to become a must-do attraction for visitors.

The experience boasts a wild beauty and intimate tasting rooms where meeting the owners and the winemakers is more the norm than the exception.

There are three tour companies in town, Divine Tours, Tasteful Excursions and Tailgate Tours.

Here is what the Kamloops Wineries Association has to say about its members:

ADVENTURE

ROCKY MOUNTAINEER ONE OF WORLD’S GREATEST TRAIN TRIPSFor 25 years, the Rocky Mountaineer has stopped in Kamloops, discharging its passenger load to take in the scenery — or simply relax in the hotel or head out for a meal.

The luxury trips are designed for the discerning traveller, featuring journeys on the Rocky Mountaineer train at three different levels, with stops in Kamloops six days a week.

In addition to its well-known RedLeaf and GoldLeaf services, the train company has added SilverLeaf, a step up from the Red level, which offers a single-level dome coach and seat-side hot-meal service.

SilverLeaf is available on selected trips. While passing vistas, guests can relax

and enjoy the interpretive commentary provided by onboard attendants and the à la carte Western Canadian cuisine served in the private main-level dining room.

It’s all part of the reason why the tours have been praised worldwide. National Geographic has called it one of the world’s greatest trips and the Society of American Travel Writers declared it The Best Train Experience in the World.

Rocky Mountaineer travels on four routes, in both eastbound and westbound directions. The First Passage to the West route travels between Vancouver and Banff or Calgary; the Journey Through the Clouds route runs between Vancouver and Jasper. On both routes, guests overnight in Kamloops. The Rainforest to Gold Rush route travels between Whistler and Jasper, with an overnight stay in Quesnel. The Whistler Sea to Sky Climb route is a 3.5-hour trip between North Vancouver and Whistler, travelling northbound in the morning and southbound in the early afternoon.

EXPLORE, DISCOVER, LEARN AT THE SCIENCE CENTERSo says award-winning educator Gordon Gore.

Through interactive fun experiences, science becomes meaningful and less mysterious. Big Little Science Centre, at 655 Holt St., provides a place for people to have such experiences.

Gore, along with the Big Little Science Centre Society (a Kamloops-based non-profit society and registered charity), developed Kamloops’ very own unique science centre in 2000. Starting from the back of a car, the Big Little Science Centre progressed to one room in a school and has increased in size over several moves.

Open for public visits year-round, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., science fun includes more than 140 interactive science exhibits, regular shows and events, science birthday parties, summer camps, robotics programs and clubs.

Special events every Saturday throughout the summer have included flight and kite day, labs on pond-creatures and static-electricity shows.

The Big Little Science Centre also has a speaker series that runs throughout the year.

A great place for hours of entertainment and learning, the Big Little Science Centre has something for everyone.

Adults have as much fun exploring and experimenting as the children. With ever-changing science adventure, the shows and activities bring families back again and again.

But fun science doesn’t have to happen only at Big Little Science Centre. The centre’s website (blscs.org) has links to many fun science sites.

As well, past issues of BIGScience — the centre’s newsletter, filled with science articles and activities to discover — are online.

Also look online for updates on summer camps. Science is meant to be experienced. The staff and

volunteers of Big Little Science Centre encourage everyone to explore fun science in the world around you.

Now in its 24th year, the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival is the largest and most musically diverse festival in the B.C. Interior.

The festival began in 1992 as a small indoor festival, the result of the grassroots Shuswap Coffee House collective of the 1970s and 1980s which, by 1991, had coalesced into the not-for-profit Salmon Arm Folk Music Society.

The main goals of the society are to encourage and promote performers from all parts of the world (with a special emphasis on Canadian talent) and to introduce audiences to the world’s incredibly diverse genres of music, musical instruments and the artists who play them.

The festival takes place on the third weekend of every August at the fairgrounds in the heart of Salmon Arm, about an hour east of Kamloops

Set beneath the panoramic splendor of Mt. Ida and the Fly Hills with lovely Shuswap Lake nearby, Roots and Blues is known as a diverse multi-genre festival.

At night, two stages run concurrently. Main Stage is at one end of the grounds and is

where you can catch the headlining acts, while the the dynamic Boogie Barn Stage lies at the other end, pumping out live beats for dancers in the crowd. Four stages host bands throughout the day.

On the roster for the summer event are The Sojourners, Jerry Lawson, Eric Bibb, Molly Tuttle Band, kLoX, Martin Harley, Front Porch Roots Revue, Crystal Shawanda, Tim Williams, Linda McRae, Roy Forbes, Delhi 2 Dublin and many more.

Roots & Blues is family-friendly, with a Family Fun Zone offering loads of things for kids to see and do, including a Family Stage with a lineup geared towards children.

Kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge. This year’s festival runs from Aug. 14 to Aug. 16.

RIBFEST IS BACK FOR ITS FIFTH EDITION THIS SUMMER.Running Aug. 5 to Aug. 7 in Riverside Park, Ribfest is a growing attraction and the Daybreak Rotary Club of Kamloops’ biggest fundraising event of the year. It brings about 60,000 people from across the province for a weekend of live music and rib-tasting. Ribbers hail from as far away as New Mexico and as close as Vancouver.

Teams will compete for first and second place, as well as best sauce, to be judged by a panel of local celebrities. Attendees can vote for the People’s Choice Award. Vegetarians can enjoy corn on the cob and salad options.

The 2012 inaugural Ribfest was a resounding success, raising $40,000 for Kamloops charities. Last year it raised a record $95,000 for various youth organizations in the city. With an ultimate annual fundraising goal of $100,000, Ribfest grows each year.

Hot Nite in the City’s annual show and shine event will simultaneously take place downtown, making it convenient to stroll through the hot rods on Victoria Street on Saturday before grabbing a hot rack of ribs down at the park. The show and shine attracts upwards of 350 classic cars from Northwest Washington, B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Ribfest organizers also co-ordinate with the car show to give guests a way to hit up both events at once with a pancake breakfast and some Hot Nite wheels on display to round out the weekend festivities on Sunday.

Similar to previous years, there will be live music from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. A large kid zone will be set up with bouncy castles, different booths and special entertainment for children. The kid zone is free, but donations to the Rotary Club are encouraged so it can bring money back into the community.

The B.C. Wildlife Park in Kamloops connects people to the province’s wildlife, encouraging a sustainable society within a healthy natural environment. Its motto is “Conservation through Education.”

The park has canines, big cats, reptiles and amphibians, bears, birds of prey, small mammals, arachnids and more to see.

Clover, the Kermode Bear, moved into his new home at the park last spring. Kermode Bears are very rare and Clover will act as an ambassador for his species. He arrived in 2012 after being unsuccessful with a rehabilitation and release program. He is believed to be the only one of his kind in professional human care anywhere in the world. The habitat is at the south end of the park and is 2.7 acres in size. Clover, also known as a Spirit Bear, is an attraction for residents of Kamloops and tourists from around the world alike.

The Park’s Fawcett Family Wildlife Health Centre works closely with the Ministry of Environment and community partners to provide rehabilitation services to injured and orphaned wildlife in the region. Once those wildlife are successfully rehabilitated, they are released back into the wild.

During the summer, see the bird of prey flight demonstration at the Highland Valley Copper

Amphitheatre or ride over a kilometre of track on the miniature train, the Wildlife Express.

The Nature Exchange helps educate people on the biological and physical components of the environment and encourages responsible collecting. Bring in your finds and earn points for your item and your knowledge of it. The Nature Exchange has a constantly rotating collection of artifacts for traders, but don’t bring animal parts or birds nests. These items are important to leave in nature for animals to use.

Get up close to farm animals at the Home Hardware Corral, which is home to llamas, pygmy goats, miniature donkeys, guinea pigs, pot-bellied pigs and rabbits.

Learn more about the animals at the B.C. Wildlife Park during guided tours with a park interpreter. Private animal encounters introduce visitors to either a turtle, bird of prey, snake or bearded dragon.

June 25 is the summer kick-off special animal encounter day. Aug. 1 is B.C. Bear Day and the Teddy Bear Picnic. Aug. 27 is the great summer finale. Throughout the summer, the park runs kid’s science day camps for children ages six to 10.

The park is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from May 1 to Sept. 1. Visit bczoo.org for more information about the B.C. Wildlife Park.

For a weekend away or a day trip up the mountain, Sun Peaks Resort is as much a summer destination as it is a winter one. It boasts events suited for everyone — from sports to crafts.

Lift accessed biking and hiking connects guests with 2,000 vertical feet of mountain-bike trails and a network of alpine hiking trails.

The resort offers a unique B.C. golf experience, with the greens located 1,200 metres above sea level — the highest elevation course in the province.

The resort has events planned for most weekends during the summer

July 1 to July 3 is Country Fest, with Ben Klick, Terence Jack and the Country Queens Tribute on Saturday and Michael Pianchaud on Sunday. The festival also features Masa’s Saloon, with live music and dancing, the Mountain Beer and Chili Cookoff, kids bouncy castles

July 8 to July 10 summer concert series features Sam Roberts Band, Kelly Spencer and Shattered Blue on Friday. A full day of live music will follow on Friday starting with Jeremy Kneeshaw.

Flashback Weekend is July 15 to July 17 with live band playing the best of the ‘70s, ’80s and ‘90s.

Aug. 12 to Aug. 14 is the seventh annual Retro Concert Weekend, bringing back classics from Johnny Cash, Pat Benatar, Heart, The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith.

The summer concert series finale wraps up Aug. 19 to Aug. 21 with Alan Doyle and the Beautiful Gypsies.

The resort hosts a myriad of sporting events, starting with the Skate Sun Peaks long boarding event on June 11 and June 12. The 5K Foam Fest obstacle race is set for June 18, while the 2016 Canadian Downhill Mountain Bike Championships happen July 23 to July 26. Other events extend into September, before the winter season begins.

Kids Fest, a day dedicated to families, is set for June 24 to June 26. The Alpine Blossom Festival will bring entertainers, activities and live music to the hill for July 29 to July 31.

The farmers’ market takes place every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from June 26 to Sept. 4. Local famers, ranchers and artisans will be in the village selling fruits, veggies, local meats, crafts and more.
