Solano Community College offers two types of Internet classes for credit: online and hybrid classes. Online classes are taught over the Internet andhybrid classes are taught partly over the Internet and partly in the classroom. These classes have regular assignment schedules and reading material andthe same learning requirements as traditional classes. Participation in online sections and hybrid sections require that students have a computer withInternet access and a web browser. The individual classes will also have additional requirements such as a textbook and possibly a specific softwareprogram to be used. You might also have to come to campus for an in-person exam.

Online: These classes utilize the Internet to create an educationalexperience that can be completely independent of time and place.Students still purchase textbook(s) and take tests, but they do themajority of the classwork at a computer connected to the Internet. Theywork according to their own schedule, at home, in the office, or onopen access computers on campus in the library. Course materials, thesyllabus, assignments, tests, and links to other Web resources, arecontained on the course site. Students communicate with theirinstructor, and each other, by sending and receiving email and byparticipating in “threaded discussions.” These are discussions thatcontinue over time where students drop in to read the comments and to

add their own. While online classes may not be for everyone, they arewell-suited to students who are self-motivated, who have access to acomputer, who may have busy schedules and who may not be able totravel to campus for classes with specific meeting times.

Hybrid: These classes use a combination of the face-to-face and onlineformats. Some activities will be conducted in a group (traditional class)format and some activities are conducted (online). These classes offerthe best of both worlds - flexibility with the online portion and thesense of being in a group with the traditional class meeting
