Founded in 1993, Vacon has rapidly gained acceptance as a supplier of robust and reliable frequency converters for a multitude of applications in all branches of industry and public sectors.
Vacon presents a new range of drives, built on the principles of software and hardware modularity. The power unit makes use of the most sophisticated semiconductor technology and a highly modular construction that can be flexibly adapted to the customer's needs. Typical power options include input and output filters, brake resistors as well as IP21 (NEMA1) and IP54 (NEMA12) enclosure classes.
Two types of control units are available and separated from the power unit. The performance of the standard sensorless vector control unit is sufficient for most of the common applications. A closed loop vector control unit with servo performance is available for more demanding applications. Typical applications include sectional drives, cranes and lifts as well as systems where several drives must operate closely together or where precise control of speed and torque at speeds close to zero is required.
The input and output configuration (I/O) is designed with modularity in mind. The I/O is comprised of option cards, each with its own input and output configuration. The control module is designed to accept a total of five of these cards. The cards contain not only normal analog and digital inputs and outputs but also fieldbuses and additional application-specific hardware.
The modular and robust design combined with the powerful IEC61131-3 compatible software support for the creation of new applications make the Vacon NX an ideal solution for even the most demanding applications. The wide temperature range, the multilingual control panel that speaks your language and the high reliability make the Vacon NX the drive for the new century.
For end users
For the end user the Vacon NX offers a range of new exciting application capabilities and possibilities for keeping stock and spares to a minimum. The NX is compatible with its predecessor, the Vacon CX, so all drawings, installation and training material can be reused. In addition, a wide selection of option cards offers new possibilities for re-configuring the drive to future requirements. The wide voltage range, high overloadability, and a user-friendly alphanumerical keypad make the choice of the correct drive easy.
For OEM customers
For the OEM customer the modular construction and wide selection of option cards make the Vacon NX a drive that can easily be incorporated into any machine. By means of our versatile block-programming tool the Vacon NX can be designed to replace a PLC and therefore significantly simplify the machine control. The servo performance of the NXP, the simplicity of the NXS and the compatible ap plication software for both make the choice easy.
For system designers
The flexible I/O configuration and the dynamic performance of the Vacon NX can fully be exploited when used in various system applications. Typically these include drives used in the paper, metal and textile industries. The Vacon NX can be configured to operate via several different buses simultaneously, making it easy to communicate with all commonly used control systems. The powerful microprocessor in the control unit can be used for local control tasks, therefore freeing the control system for overall control tasks.

The All-in-One application package has seven applications which can be selected with one parameter. The application will also be requested by the Start-up Wizard at the first power-up. With this single setting, the controls can be programmed e.g. for two external control places or a pressure control with the integrated PID controller. Typical uses include pumps, fans, blowers, compressors, conveyors, winders, mixers, cranes, hoists, winches, elevators and crushers. In most cases, the default basic application is suitable and only the min/max frequencies as well as motor nominal values must be set.
1 The basic application is set as factory default. The I/O signals are fixed (not programmable). A single param-eter group containing 18 parameters is available. The frequency reference can be provided either as a current or as a voltage signal (from a potentiometer or other source), or directly from the control panel. This applica-tion is suitable for most cases.
2 The standard application features the same control signal logic as the basic application with the added pos-sibility of freely programming all digital and analog in-puts and outputs. Eight parameter groups are available, including basic, input signal, output signal supervision, drive control, frequency, motor control, protection and auto restart parameters.
3 The local/remote application is an ideal choice for operation with two alternative control sources. The source of the frequency reference can be freely programmed. The active control source is selected via a digital input. All outputs are programmable, and the eight parameter groups are provided as standard.
4 The multi-step speed control application is in-tended for switching between fixed speeds. Nine pro-grammable speeds include basic, seven multi-step and jogging. The speed is selected by means of a digital input signal. The basic speed reference can be provided either as a current or as a voltage signal. All inputs and outputs are programmable, and the eight parameter groups are provided as standard.

5 The PID control application has two I/O termi-nal control sources. Source A is the PID controller and source B is a direct frequency reference. The PID con-troller reference can be obtained via the analog inputs, from a potentiometer, a fieldbus or the panel. The actual value can be obtained via the analog inputs or from a mathematical function of the analog inputs. Typical PID control applications include those where one variable must be kept constant, such as pressure in water mains, in spite of changes in the environment or load. All out-puts are programmable, and the eight parameter groups are provided as standard.
6 The multi-purpose control application has a fre-quency reference that can be given via the analog inputs, from the joystick control, a potentiometer, a fieldbus or a mathematical function of the analog inputs. Different multi-step and jogging speeds can be programmed. All outputs are programmable, and the eight parameter groups are provided as standard. Of all applications, the multi-purpose application is the most versatile due to its special parameters providing highly sophisticated programming capabilities.
7 The pump and fan control with autochange application can be used for controlling one variable speed drive and a total of four auxiliary drives. The PID regulator controls the speed of the variable speed drive and provides start and stop signals to the auxiliary drives. All outputs are freely programmable. In addition to the eight parameter groups provided as standard, a param-eter group for multi-pump and fan control functions is available. As an example, the pump and fan control application can be used for decreasing the delivery pressure in booster stations if the measured input pressure falls below a user-specified limit. The application utilizes external contactors for switching between the motors connected to the frequency con-verter. The autochange feature provides the capability of changing the starting order of the auxiliary drives.
We offer a wide range of customized special applications, including Water Solutions Package (for multiple pump flow control, irrigation and level control), Lift, Winder, High-speed, Torque control and Permanent Magnet motors. Furthermore, we provide the NC1131-3 Engineering tool for customizing the applications to better meet your requirements.
Thanks to the modular software applications made by the Vacon NC1131-3 Engineering tool, the All-in-One application package can be replaced by the NXP Application Package that turns the Vacon NXP into a full-featured high-performance drive. The optional NXP Application Package meets the requirements of demanding automation applications requiring coordinated drives for paper machines, metal industry and processing lines. The package also includes the Position Control Application for single-axis position interpolating control and the Shaft Synchronization Application for relative position control between a master and follower axis.

Choice of frequency converter
All drives are dimensioned according to the same principle, the current required by the load. The selection of the drive is determined by the degree of overloadability required and by the ambient temperature.
Two types of overload conditions have been defined:
A. Low overload: 10% for 1 minute every 10 minutes,
150% starting torque, 40°C ambient temperature.
Typical applications include centrifugal fans and pumps as well as rotary compressors with low variations in load.
B. High overload: 50% for 1 minute every 10 minutes, 200% starting torque, 50°C ambient temperature. Typical applications include cranes, hoists, lifts and conveyors as well as others with rapidly changing load.

There are no fixed inputs or outputs in the Vacon NXS/P. There are five slots (A, B, C, D and E) for I/O boards, and a suitable board can be selected for each slot (see the table below).
The NXS/P units are delivered with OPT-A1 and OPT-A2 boards if the I/O is not specified. In many countries, boards OPT-A1 and OPT-A3 are used as standard I/O as the galvanically (double) isolated thermistor input is often required.
Removable terminals, snap-in card installation, automatic card identification and instructions on the drive help making quick connections. If necessary, the inputs, outputs and fieldbus boards can be added in the field. The Vacon NXS/P is simply the most flexible frequency converter series on the market.
An external +24 V supply option enables communication with the control unit even if the mains supply is switched off (e.g. fieldbus communication and parameter settings).Four types of cards are available. Their designation is of the form OPTxx as follows:

In most installations the process control also requires other equipment, such as computers and sensors. This equipment is often installed in close proximity, making it probable that they may influence each other.
There are two major types of interference:
Low frequency – harmonicsHigh frequency – EMI
Harmonic currents
All waveshapes (currents or voltages) can be expressed as the sum of the basic frequency (50 or 60 Hz) and higher multiples of this. In balanced three-phase systems only odd harmonics will be present. The even ones are cancelled based on symmetry. Nonlinear loads draw currents that are not sinusoidal and generate these harmonics. Typical sources include rectifier bridges in power electronics, switch-mode power supplies in office equipment and fluorescent lamps. For three-phase rectifier loads the harmonic currents present are 6 x n ± 1, i.e. 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, etc. The magnitude of the currents decreases as their frequency increases. The added harmonic current does not carry power, but is an added current flowing in the cables. Typical effects are overloading of conductors, decrease in the power factor, and measuring systems malfunction. The voltages created by these currents flowing in the reactance of the transformer might also damage other equipment or interfere with power line communication equipment.
Eliminating the problem The magnitude of the harmonic currents decreases as their frequency increases, so in order to eliminate the problem, we concentrate on the lower frequencies.
The easiest way is to increase the impedance at higher frequencies is with a choke. Drives without chokes generate significantly higher levels of harmonics than drives that have one.
An AC choke has the added effect of protecting the drive against spikes in the supply. All Vacon drives have built-in AC chokes. These chokes eliminate the harmonics to a large degree, but not totally.
At higher powers, a 12- or 18-pulse solution is often used. This reduces the harmonics in the supply by eliminating the lowest order harmonics. In a 12-pulse solution, the lowest harmonics are the 11th and 13th, followed by the 23rd, 25th, etc., with cor responding low levels. For the 18-pulse solution the harmonics are the 17th and 19th, etc. at still lower levels. The supply current is very close to a sinewave. The effect of harmonics can be decreased in several other ways. One possibility is to use the Vacon regenerative front end converter, which has an almost sinusoidal supply current (current THD normally <4%). The most common solution is to use notch filters to change the impedance of the supply at specific frequencies. These work well for stable, unchanging networks. Another way is to increase the supply transformer power, as the lower reactance will cause lower harmonic voltages. A third method is to use an active filter that compensates for the non-linearity of the load. In the past few years, several standards have been published regarding harmonics, notably IEC10003, IEC1800-3 (EN61800-3), IEC555 (EN60555) and IEEE519-92. In a correctly design ed system the Vacon drives comply with all these.

High frequency interference
High frequency interference consists of either radiated or conducted disturbances at frequencies above 9 kHz. Standards exist for 150 kHz to 1000 MHz. These frequencies are generally created by switching elements in any device, for example clocks in computers, switch-mode power supplies and the output switches of drives. The generated high-frequency disturbance can interfere with the operation of other devices. The high frequency noise emitted from any device may influence measuring systems and communication systems, and interfere with radio receivers. All effects combined may cause unexpected outages.
Eliminating the problem
Two areas can be addressed:
the immunity: standards EN50082-1,-2,EN61800-3, AS61800-3the emissions: standards EN50081-1,-2,EN61800-3, AS61800-3
The generic standards EN50081 and 50082 as well as EN61800 (IEC1800-3) for drives define levels of immunity and emission required for devices designed to operate in different environments. The Vacon drives are designed to operate in a variety of environments, so they are equipped with industrial strength immunity against RFI. This means that the drives will operate reliably in all environments. The standards also define the level of emission accepted in the various environments. You can choose from the following:
H – For users in the first environment, restricted distribution and in the second environment.N – For larger powers, over 400A: no emission suppression – an EMC plan is requiredT – For IT supply networks.
We also offer, as an option, RFI filters to bring the drive to the commercial level – for general use in a non-industrial environment (EN61800-3, first environment, unrestricted distribution).
For all of these classes we have an EU Declaration of Conformity as well as a Technical Construction File (TCF), verified by FIMKO Ltd.

The use of shielded motor cables is re commended with the Vacon NX to comply with the EMC requirements of the EU. However, unshielded mains supply cables can be used to save on cable cost. The motor cable should be routed as far away from other cables as possible. Also placing the motor cables parallel to other cables should be avoided.
Motor cables should cross other cables at a 90-degree angle. The motor cable must be earthed (grounded) at the frequency converter end and at the motor end. The maximum length of the motor cable for use with the Vacon NX is as follows with the exception of:
NX 0003–0004: 100 m NX 0005 - onwards: 300 m
For longer cables, use du/dt filters or chokes.
The cables must possess a heat resistance of at least +60°C. The sizing of the cable and fuses must be carried out according to the Vacon drive actual output current (see IH and IL).

I/O connections
The available I/O connections in the Vacon NX is determined by the I/O card configuration used. If no special configuration is specified, the standard I/O provided is as follows: 2 analog inputs, 6 digital inputs, 1 analog output, 2 relay outputs, 1 digital output (open collector output) and auxiliary voltages.
See the description of the available cards for more information.
Changing from one application to another sets the I/O configuration to the default of the chosen application.
Galvanic separations with option cards A1 and A2.
Different option cards offer different solutions, see

The Vacon NX must be installed in a vertical position. Due to its slim, space-saving design and small size, the Vacon NX can easily be mounted on the wall or in an enclosure even if space is limited. When the drive is installed in an enclosure, the cooling airflow must not be blocked in any way, either on the suction or on the exhaust side. For example, the NX 0016 requires
approximately 70 m3/h of fresh cooling air! Recirculation of air within the enclosure should be avoided. Sufficient free space around the frequency converter guarantees proper air circulation and cooling.
