Vademecum: from Latin vade mecum, come with me.

This booklet was written by some students of the Università Cattolica to welcome you and help you in this new beginning. We collected here some advice from our experience of exams, lessons and life at university: we hope you will find it useful!

We cannot wait to meet you.

Enjoy reading your vademecum, and good luck for this new adventure!

ATENEO STUDENTI

Ateneo Studenti is a student association that consists of students from all the faculties of Università Cattolica. Since 1975, the year of foundation, students have been dealing with what happens in university expressing their opinion, thanks to a weekly work. This interest takes different forms such as student representatives or exhibitions, including study vacations and the organization of conferences. A simple commitment, because this is what it’s all about, for anyone willing to enjoy the present. We meet every week in the Student Point room, open to everybody as a study room except when there are meetings for the students involved with Ateneo Studenti only, to discuss many different topics concerning both the faculties and the university as a whole.

What does it mean to live your university?

We know that it is possible to go to university as if it were an almost compulsory and successive stage after high school. It is enough to enrol a graduating course, taking the necessary steps and acquiring that title that will act as a springboard for the ever-dreamt job. Moreover, the web helps us not to compromise ourselves too much in the university environment, which may somehow appear chaotic and where you may feel a stranger, regretting, without fully admit-ting it, the old high school class, classmates and even teachers. But then why is it worth it to be involved in this peculiar community of professors and students? Why attending it and trying to get to know it? What each one of us desires is to fully be fulfilled: that is the aim, in the end, of our common job of studying and researching. That is to me the fundamental point, for which it is worth it to live university. It cannot be an anonymous institution, aimed at forming anony-mous professionals, but a place of faces, strictly committed to the chore of knowledge in order to build their personal identity and, therefore, the world. I can assure you, that you feel a great joy when, cutting through the sea of knowledge, it is possible to identify that route that, by its existence alone, holds the discovery of Truth and of one’s self together. And yet, as a sailing ship cannot be ruled by a man alone, so the discovery of the self cannot happen thanks to your own self. The crew is necessary and so the community, from the freshman to the rector magnificus, in order to face the travel. Indeed, it is our responsibility to decide every day how to live univer-sity. We can bear it as we bear a sweltering journey into a packed underground wagon, among the indifferent faces with the only hope to get soon to their destination. Or we can get involved with the crew of the sailing ship, setting sails towards knowledge. Here, each face can be a travel companion, to be able to get to know ourselves and the reason why we live in this world.

UNIVERSITÀ CATTOLICA DEL SACRO CUORE:

THE HISTORY“Ideas are what the world needs above all” [...] And as ideas are worked out and communicated in teaching, he [Fr. Gemelli] conceived the bold project of an Institute that would gather together good students […] and willing young people, animated by the desire to proceed with their teachers in search of truth, in order to adhere to it passionately and then generously to transmit to others its riches, which had now become the substance of their own lives.

From John Paul II’s speech at UCSC, December 8 1978

February 1920

Edoardo Gemelli, also known as Fr. Agostino Gemelli, was born in Milan on January 18, 1878. His family was lapsed and anticlerical, and he grew up in an agnostic environment. After finishing university, while working in the studio of Camillo Golgi, he developed a passion for biological sciences and for experimental research and began to study to understand the truth of man, an interest that was crucial to him and that he never abandoned. Thanks to the meeting with Ludovico Necchi and another friend, a priest, Gemelli converted to Christianity and in 1904 he became a friar minor. Driven by his conversion and his questions, in 1918 father Gemelli, prompted by the economist Giuseppe Toniolo and with the collaboration of Ludovico Necchi, Francesco Olgiati, Armida Barelli and Ernesto Lombardo, decided to establish a Catholic University. Father Gemelli was Rector until his death, in 1959.

The Istituto Giuseppe Toniolo di Studi Supe-riori, the institution that founded UCSC, was born.According to the statute of our University: “The Giuseppe Toniolo Institute for Higher Education, the founding and promoting body of Università Catto-lica, guarantees the achievement of the institutional purposes” (art. 2.1) “[…] through appropriate higher education which is adherent to the principles of Chri-stianity, with due regard for the autonomy proper to every form of knowledge, and according to a concep-tion of science at the service of the human being and of civil co-existence, in line with the principles of the Catholic doctrine and with the universal nature of Catholicism and its high and specific needs of free-dom.” (art. 1.3).

Inauguration of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, in the presence of the Cardinal Archbishop of Milan Achille Ratti, who was elected pope three months later with the name of Pius XI.

Our university has always been a university of the people. In fact, a big part of the university spending was funded by donations from the Italian Catholics. Thanks to these generous and constant contributions, even students with financial difficulties, who otherwise would not have been able to study, had the opportunity of receiving a higher education.

Pope Pius XI established a day dedicated to the Catholic Uni-versity, the Giornata dell’Uni-versità Cattolica. One Sunday each year, every Italian church donates the money collected during the Mass to the Catho-lic University.

1932: UCSC moved from Sant’Agnese to Largo Gemelli, to the cloisters of the former monastery of St. Ambrose.

Unicatt: why did they choose this name?In those times, culture was proclaiming the antithesis between faith and science.Science really is important and, without any doubt, necessary, but individual and social life, in a word, history, are a daily reminder that it is not enough. It is necessary that culture and civilisation be guided by caritas, by love, by a heart. This is why Fr. Gemelli called his creation “Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore”.

Francesco Olgiati

Father Gemelli wanted the Cappella to be built just inside the main entrance, so that “students could immediately find, as they enter the university, the One who is the Master, and could kneel before Him and pay their respects, both when they enter and when they leave the university”.

World War II: fall and rebirthBetween the 15th and 16th of August 1943, the Catholic University was bombed. The main entrance, part of the Bramante cloister and the grand staircase were hit. The right side of the facade was never rebuilt, as you can see from outside the main entrance. After the bombings, the reconstruction began immediately. Fr. Gemelli himself said: “the Catholic University will rise again, more beautiful and bigger than before”. Many people were directly invol-ved, and in just a few months academic activities could begin again. They did not stop at the university: several students and professors took part in the reconstruction of the nation by becoming involved with public administra-tion, local authorities and the leadership of the nation.

During World War II, the General Co-ordination of the Resistance, the “Corpo volontari della libertà”, would gather in-side the university, thanks to the support of Ezio Franceschini, a professor of Latin and Mediaeval Literature, who would later become Rector. In 1944, important documents about the Resistance were hidden under some skeletons of the 18th century, and the German SS were unable to find them during their searches. They were then unearthed after the war.

The Sixties were years of great changes for Italian universities. UCSC, which at the time was a small university established with the aim to educate the Italian ruling class, opened its gates to more and more students.

The Università Cattolica faced a crisis of identity for some years, until it was affected by the wave of protests. Students occupied the university after a big rise in tuition fees. The Dean’s and the Administration’s reaction was immediate, and the protesters were forced out by the police (soon after, the leaders of the protests were expelled).

The events of 1968, a watershed year, affected the Italian society and did not spare the Catholic world, which found itself bewildered and fragmented facing the radicalism of the protests. During this dramatic period, UCSC never gave up its aim to educate and its efforts to shape its own peculiar identity. The redefinition of its role sparked clashes between student and professors, but it also inspired a discussion that saw different opinions arise among both students and professors.

October 16, 1978: Karol Wojtyla became Pope with the name of John Paul II. It was an important moment for the Catholic University, which some years before had developed a deep friendship with the Archbishop of Kraków. For his first official visit outside of the Vatican, the Pope went to the Polyclinic Gemelli. The relations with the Popes continued this way, as they always considered the Catholic University as a favorite daughter.

From the 1970s to now

Pope John Paul II visited the university campus in Milan and gave a speech in front of the professors and all the represen-tatives of the Milanese culture. He reminded everyone that the duty of every University, parti-cularly of a Catholic Universi-ty, was “the tension to the whole Truth”, because “discovering the Truth, men fulfil themselves”.

22maggio1983

And I leave you now, hoping that I will meet you again somewhere, I don’t know where. But students, young people, can be met everywhere. Everywhere there are Universities, everywhere there are students, everywhere there are young people and everywhere there is hope for the future. (from John Paul II’s speech to the students, May 22, 1983).

The Pope issued the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae, addressed to Catholic Universities all over the world. The purpose of this document was that “the Christian mind may achieve, as it were, a public, persistent and universal presence in the whole enterprise of advancing higher culture and that the students of these institutions become people outstanding in learning, ready to shoulder society’s heavier burdens and to witness the faith to the world.” (Gravissimum Educationis, 10) 15th

Theology courses are a unique trait of our university. This peculiarity, which sets us apart from all other Italian academic institutions, is rooted in the educational mission that originated our University. Teaching Theology does not only mean creating specific courses. As His Most Revered Eminence, Cardinal Angelo Scola said when he met our professors, teaching Theology is a task of our University, and it implies offering it as the grounds on which all fields of knowledge can meet and exchange, cooperating in the search for the good and the truth.

Technical infoFirst year MD students must pass a Theology exam too. The Faculty assigns them a professor who will teach a seminar connected to their field of study. Their exam is not marked in numbers, but only as approved/not approved.

Are you up for the challenge?Theology courses are neither catechism lessons nor an attempt to indoctrinate you: instead, they challenge you to use your reason to discover more about human nature and to ask your questions on life and its meaning. After all, we all have them, don’t we?

WHAT IS THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION?

Hence, right to study is not prerogative for those who can aff ord education, it instead means allowing to know, learn and form themselves all those who feel such need.

Th erefore, the economic aid is the fi rst to be guaranteed as without it many “capable and deserving pupils” would not have the chance of getting education.

Right to education, though, is more than just right to benefi ts. Indeed, it is also a care for the students, looking at their person with a 360 degrees perspective.

Schools are open to anyone. Capable and deserving pupils, including those without adequate finances, have the right to attain the highest levels of education. The

Republic renders this right effective through scholarships, allowances to families and other benefits, which shall be assigned through competitive examinations.

WHAT IS EDUCatt?EDUcatt is the non – profit foundation that the Catholic University chose to deal with the right to university study.

The service provided by this entity goes beyond scholarships, it in fact considers also the non – holders and their needs: an accommodation for off – campus students, a healthy and quality meal within university, access to a broad range of academical texts and even health and psychological assistance.

EDUcatt addresses such needs providing services aimed at accompanying students throughout their university path, to prepare them for future, where they will create value and worth themselves with their hard work, professionality and knowledge.

Economics and management Th is BA is entirely taught in English and the academic calendar is divided in trimesters. Th e fi rst trimester starts during the third week of September and ends the in middle November. Th e second trimester starts in January and ends at the beginning of March. Th e last trimester starts in April and ends in middle June.

At the end of each trimester, there is an exam period: for every course taught in that trimester you will have two chances of taking the exam, while for any other exam you might have left behind there will be only one date available.

During each trimester, you will have the opportunity to take midterms based on the modules taught until that moment.

Trimesters are organised as follows:

1st trimester 2nd trimester 3rd trimesterPrinciples of Management

(8 CFU)Mathematics - 3rd partial exam Introductory Microeconomics

(8 CFU)

IT for Economics and Management (8 CFU)

Organization Theory and Design (8 CFU)

Economic History (8 CFU)

PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENTStudying for this exam, you will learn the terminology you will need every day as you go on with your studies. Th e exam is divided into two core modules: ‘Principles of Management’, which gives you the theoretical basis of the subject, and ‘Financial and Accounting’, which introduces you the world of numbers. It is really important to attend the course and to read the book at the end of each lecture, as the exam can be challenging. Th e lectures are really interesting and your active participation will be required during class. Moreover, experts of the fi eld will be invited as guests, to tell you about what they do.

MATHEMATICSIt is one of the toughest exams of the fi rst year. You should have studied the majority of this course’s topics during high school, except for the last part of the exam. Never skip seminars, which are held weekly, as they will help you to understand what is more relevant for the exam.

Mathematics -1st and 2nd partial exams (9 CFU)

Principles of law (8 CFU)

First Foreign Language (French I) - 3rd partial (only for beginners)

First Foreign Language (French I) - 1st partial exam (4 CFU)

First Foreign Language (French I) - 2nd partial exam

You will be divided into two groups: take advantage from the fact that your class will be quite small and get to know your classmates, both Italian and international, better, as you are going to spend the next academic years with them. One of the main features of this course is that you are going to have to do group projects that will be evaluated and are going to affect the final grade of the exam. Do not forget that lots of the exams from the first year are compulsory in order to take the exams from the second year.

CHANGING YOUR MAJORIt may be that during the undergraduate program a student wants to move from a degree course to another (for instance from “Gestione Aziendale” to “Imprese e Mercati”): this is permitted and, of course, all the exams previously taken will be converted. The procedure is easier than it might seem: if you find yourself in this situation, consult the Guida di Facoltà and ask the students’ representatives for help. You can only transfer if you have already reached 80 CFU, so you will think about it at the end of your second year.

PRINCIPLES OF LAWThis exam concerns the Italian private law. The textbook and the slides are a good starting point, but not enough to pass the exam. Is really important to attend classes and take notes. This is the only oral examination of the first year.

INTRODUCTORY MICROECONOMICSIn this course, you will learn about the theoretical models that try to represent the economic reality. This exam requires a meticulous study and is based on a good knowledge of mathematics. In addition to the lectures, you will also have weekly seminars that are going to help you understand better the topics discussed in class.

PREPARATORY COURSESSome of the exams of the undergraduate program can only be taken once you have passed some other exams. These are called “preparatory courses”: their aim is to lay the foundations (theoretical, quantitative, and lexical) on which you will gradually develop your knowledge. It is important to be aware of this in order to avoid accumulating these exams and leaving them behind, thus missing the chance to take others. An example is “Matematica Generale” for “Economia Politica I”, or “Economia Aziendale” for “Organizzazione Aziendale”.

Why study groups? The goal of our study groups, which are guided by elder students, is to help you face up to the new classes you are taking, which deal with economic contents and new, sometimes complicated, methods. Mastering them will definitely be useful to pass the exam and will help you face the following courses with a solid foundation!

What are they?Study groups are regular meetings during which elder students offer their time for free to help freshmen prepare the most difficult exams of the first year by revising the courses’ contents and learning what is the best study method for each specific subject. Often, while studying together, some questions arise that help deepen our understanding of the subject, and might not emerge if we always studied by ourselves. We try to answer them during the study group, but also during the lessons and the professor’s office hours. Joining a study group is simple and free. As the semester begins, we will let you know how to participate!

Info:• Study groups are NOT an alternative to classes and individual study: they only

help if you attend the course regularly.• Which subjects? General Mathematics (1st sem) and Political Economics 1 (2nd sem)• Each study group will meet once a week, the day and time will depend on

everyone’s availability. First-year students will be divided following alphabetical order (A-B, C-E, etc.)

• Before midterms we organise a mock-test, so that you can put yourself to the test before the actual exam.

WHY DO SOME ELDER STUDENTS OFFER THEIR TIME TO HELP YOU?

Let’s ask them!Last year, more than 300 first-year students joined our study groups, and for many of them it was not only an opportunity to learn something, but also to make friends.

When they asked me to help with the study groups of Microeconomics I was very sceptical, because I didn’t want to take time away from my study.. . but when I tried it the first time, I had to change my mind! First, for me the study groups have been an opportunity to understand better why I like so much what I study. By explaining concepts and ideas, doing exercises together and answering the questions of first-year students I learned more about subjects I had already studied, which since then have become much more interesting. I was surprised by the fact that this method of helping freshmen has made me more passionate about Economics, and that it can become an occasion to communicate this interest to everyone!

Umberto, 3rd year

WHAT DO THE FRESHMEN THINK ABOUT?

I have taken part in study groups for two years now, and every year they get better. In my case, the subjects I explain to first-year students are subjects I am interested in. This way, the study groups become a way to go over them again and understand new aspects every time. Moreover, during these two years I have met many nice people: elder students but most of all freshmen, who are still thanking me today. Finally, study groups have helped me think about what my future path could be, making me consider the possibility of teaching.

Francesco, 1st year, Grad SchoolI think the study groups of Mathematics and Microeconomics are a great opportunity for two simple reasons: firstly, they are a way to integrate yourself in the university environment, by meeting elder students that can become great friends. Secondly, I think they helped me reach a deeper understanding of difficult subjects, thanks to the all the students who offered their time and dedicated themselves to this initiative.

Marta, 1st year

They helped me by explaining concepts that I did not understand in class, and the mock-test that they gave us were also very useful.

Francesca, 1st year

STUDY ABROADUCSC offers different possibilities and ways to study abroad, valuable occasions to learn a foreign language, meet students from other countries and experiencing different ways of learning and teaching.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMS There are four programs that allow you to study abroad for 5 to 10 months:

• Exchange: a program that allows you to spend a semester or an entire academic year in one of the universities abroad that have an agreement with UCSC. It is divided into Erasmus programs with partner universities in the EU, and Overseas for all the other destinations. You will not have to pay any additional fees to the foreign university, but you still need to pay those of the UCSC. For this kind of program, EU and UCSC offer numerous scholarships.

• ISEP Network: it is a program that is different for destinations (most of them are in the USA) and prices (in addition to the UCSC’s fees, you have to pay also a contribution to the host University).

• Study Abroad Network: this program is as prestigious as it is expensive. It requires a minimum average of 24/30 and gives you access to some of the most renowned universities of the world. Keep an eye on your wallet though!

• Free Mover: it requires the acceptance by the host University, which will require you pay a part of its annual tuition fees. In addition, you have to go on paying the UCSC’s entire fees. But, on the bright side, with this program you can choose whichever host university you want, instead of having to pick one from a limited list.

• These programs (except for the Free Mover) require you to pass an initial selection made through competition notice.

More detailed information on competitions, destinations and requirements can be found on the website ucscinternational.unicatt.it.

A little tip: before rushing abroad, take some time to start with the right foot here in Italy! This can also help you to make a conscious decision about which host universities to apply to, choosing the right destinations according to your interests.

Page 31: VADEMECUM · Orientamento aule 43 CUSL 44. 5 ATENEO STUDENTI Ateneo Studenti is a student association that consists of students from all the faculties of Università Cattolica. Since

DOUBLE DEGREEIf your goal is to get a degree valid also in a foreign country of your interest, the Double Degree is the right choice for you. It will allow you to carry out part of your academic program in UCSC and the other part in a foreign university. The available destinations for this relatively new program are still few, but their number is constantly increasing.

STUDY AND INTERNSHIP ABROADSummer programs are shorter programs that take place during the summer and allow you to take some exams, which will then be converted by the UCSC. Moreover, there are also many opportunities for those who wants to have a work experience abroad or simply to learn a language.

For further information about the possibilities to study and work abroad we suggest you to attend one of the International Days that take place in the UCSC during the year.

PROFESSOR, A WORD?INTERVIEW WITH PROF. BENEDETTO LORENZO CANNATELLI Assistant professor of Management, Business and Entrepreneurship at the

Catholic University of the Sacred Hearth and senior fellow at ALTIS, Graduate School of Business and Society, and E4Impact Foundation, organisations related to the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.

What does the Faculty of Economics offer to a student? The goal of the Faculty is to train students toward a full comprehension of the economic dimension of human activities, such as production, trading, business in general as well as consumption.

On the other hand, what does a student of economics has to offer to the world? My hope is that our graduates may contribuite to the common good by adopting a positive, confident and enthusiastic approach to provide solutions to relevant needs or challenges of society as a whole, at both local and global levels.

How can studying economics contribute to the development of a critical approach to reality?I think making sense of the economic antecedents and consequences of human action is fundamental for a full comprehension of social phenomena at both macro and individual level.

Is the Catholic University in any aspect different from other universities? Why? As a catholic institution, our university should stimulate students toward considering business first of all a means to meet human needs, where profit is the way to meet shareholders legitimate expectations, not the ultimate goal of a venture.

Is there any advice you would give to the freshmen?Live this new adventure with high expectation, be curious and keep searching for a nexus between what you learn everyday and reality as a whole. Ask support to your teachers in this process.

INTERVIEW WITH PROF. MAURIZIO MOTOLESEProfessor of Economic Policy and Politica Economica

In your opinion, what can the Faculty of Economics off er to a student? And on the other hand, what can a student of Economics off er to the world?First, I would like to specify that the following answers are my personal opinions and they do not necessarily refl ect the point of view of the Faculty of Economics of the Catholic University. To answer the fi rst question, I am not going to refer to the educational off er and various programmes, as they are exhaustively presented on the web site and on the Faculty guide. I would like to dwell on another formative aspect: the method. Economics is by nature a complex system. Studies of this subject off er useful methods to analyse complexity in a broad sense, which is a helpful skill, whatever the working path will be. Achieving good analysis methods and instruments should be the major concern during the studies. In other words, acquiring notions as they were instructions for use is not enough. It is necessary to achieve a method of analysis that allows to face always new and diff erent situations in a complex and rapidly changing world. Th e analysis experience acquired by applying such method is what a student of economics can off er the world.

Can the study be a starting point for a critical judgement of what happens? How?Of course it can. A critical confrontation with what happens is only possible with solid bases which are ensured by study. In other words, you cannot criticise what you do not know. An active participation during lectures can result in occasion of deep discussion and confront with your teachers to get to understand and judge what happens. It happened to me at the end of some Economic Policy classes that a group of students stayed: they were interested in deeply understanding the Italian economic situation and those days have been precious occasions of knowledge and judgement of reality.

Which advices would you give to freshmen?First advice: assiduously attend classes and study with a pluriannual perspective, meaning that what you study during the fi rst year is not to be archived and set aside; it is instead precious and necessary to face contents of following years classes. Th e second advice I would give is not to settle for the minimum, just passing exams, but be ambitious and not to lowball with your study plan. Th e third and last advice is to widen your horizons and look beyond the borders. Immediately build a curriculum which allows you to be citizens of the world.
