Principals Message
Spring has sprung right into summer! The weather is really warm for this time of year
and so it is easy for us all to want to be in the summer mode. Year-end is coming up fast
but we still have a lot left to do so we will be working hard to stay focused for a couple
more months. Badminton is coming to a close this weekend as the Juniors head to Swift
Current and Track and Field is winding up now for our White Mud Sectional Track
meet on May 17th in Shaunavon.
Coming up very soon is our AGM for the School Community Council. We have a spe-
cial guest coming to present to parents regarding student safety online. Lisa Bender is
an e-catalyst learning teacher and has vast knowledge to share with you. She will be
able to answer your questions and point you in right direction when it comes to infor-
mation needed to guide young people safely online. We had Lisa present to the students
last month and they thoroughly enjoyed her presentation. I know you will too! Please
join us on May 19th for lunch and take in the presentation.
The School Community Council is also organizing Rec Expo! On June 2nd Val Marie
School will be hosting about 150 students from Vanguard, Mankota, Glentworth, Pon-
teix and Kincaid as we explore some new types of recreation and sport that we do not so
often get to experience. Keep an eye out for more information as we move closer to the
day. If anyone out there would like to help sponsor Val Marie School in hosting this day
please contact Carmen Hanson.

30th at Froner School with the following players represenng our school:

Advancing to Junior Districts this Saturday May 7th in Swi Current will be Beau Larson, Ga-
brielle Schmidt & Jesse Chrisanson. All 3 players finished 1st in their respecve events! Con-
gratulaons to all the Junior players on a great season and good luck to the players advancing
on to Districts!
Senior Badminton
Congratulations to athletes Kody James, Brayden Penner and Dylan Larson on a successful
Senior Badminton season!
It was a pleasure to watch the outstanding improvements as they each took their game to a
new level! Whether it was Kody and his incredible backhand shots, Brayden with his amazing
reach and court coverage or Dylan's speed and agility, they each brought their special
strength to the game.
The boys were excited to participate in the Singles Competition at the Rockglen Tournament
on April 9th. They each worked very hard and experienced success. Dylan won a silver medal.
Senior Sectionals were hosted in Shaunavon on April 19th.
Unfortunately, Kody was unable to participate due to an injury, so Jesse Christianson joined
forces with Brayden to compete in the Boys Doubles pool. This was the first time that Bray-
den and Jesse played as a doubles team and ended up winning some difficult sets against very
seasoned partners. Congratulations Boys! Dylan competed in the Boys Singles competition and
won First Place! (an exciting and unexpected birthday gift!)
Dylan advanced to Chinook Districts at the Swift Current Comprehensive School on April 30th
and was proud to win a bronze medal for Val Marie .
Gold Medal - Taron Ham - Frontier School
Bronze Medal - Dylan Larson - Val Marie School
Special thanks to Sue Legault for co-ordinating the competition entries and lining up extra
practices in Frontier and Ponteix. A big thank-you to the Juniors (Jesse Christianson, Cassidy
Duquette, Colt Kornfeld, Beau Larson, Gabrielle Schmidt and Cameron Grant) for joining our
practices as they were a wonderful addition!
Thanks to the Val Marie School for the opportunity to coach, as I was happy to spend time
with such a kind, respectful, and humble group of kids!
Cheers,
Shelly Larson

ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE SAFETY
Laws and Safety Tips
During the warmer, snow-free months local residents can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities which include the use of an all-terrain vehicle. While enjoying your ATV, it is important to remember that there are a number of Provincial and even Federal legislations which govern the use of such vehicles. The purpose of this letter is to provide some rudimentary information regarding safe and lawful use of your ATV.
For the purposes of this letter, an "all-terrain vehicle" is defined by the All-Terrain Vehicles Act as a self-propelled vehicle that is designed for use on unprepared surfaces and includes quads, dirt bikes and "three-wheelers".
The following are a list of safety tips based on the various Acts and Statutes which govern ATV use. These safety tips are law, and failure to obey them can result in charges and/or monetary fines:
• Any person over the age of 16 must hold a valid license in order to operate an ATV, except on private land owned by him or her-self or a member of immediate family;
• Any person older than 12 but younger than 16 may operate an ATV if accompanied or directly supervised by someone holding a valid license and if the youth has completed an ATV Training Course;
• Any person operating an All-Terrain Vehicle used on Crown land must be able to provide proof of insurance;
• Always wear an approved helmet and eye protection while using an All-Terrain Vehicle;
• Although Val Marie has a Municipal Bylaw which allows All Terrain Vehicle operators to use an ATV on town streets, this By-law is superseded by Provincial and Federal legislation, such as the Criminal Code and Traffic Safety Act;
•All recognized traffic laws must be obeyed when an All -Terrain Vehicle is used (i.e. stop signs);
•Last but not least, be sure to familiarize yourself with the operating standards of your specific ATV as per the owner's manual.
Following these steps will ensure your safety and well-being while enjoying your All-Terrain Vehicle. If you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitateto contact any member of your local RCMP Detachment.
