The Department of Music in the College of the Arts seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Music (Saxophone) for the 2017-18 academic year. The position is an academic (ten-month), tenure-track faculty position. All Valdosta State University faculty share the responsibility of teaching courses at multiple levels as needed in their respective disciplines. To carry out our comprehensive mission, we seek faculty with the desire and ability to successfully engage students as they launch or continue their intellectual journey. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following: • Recruiting and maintaining an active saxophone studio. • Teaching undergraduate and graduate saxophone majors and minors. • Performing as member of the Faculty Jazz Combo. • Teaching jazz improvisation courses. • Coaching a jazz combo. • Maintaining an active regional, national and international presence as a saxophone performer. Additional teaching duties may be expected based on qualifications and departmental needs. Required qualifications include: • Masters degree in Music. • Terminal Degree or ABD by August 1 2017. Completion of terminal degree required for tenure application. • Proven record of success as a professional jazz and classical performer, college teaching experience, and a record demonstrating a desire and ability to recruit. Preferred qualifications include: • Demonstrated success teaching college-level applied saxophone. Valdosta State University is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The department is comprised of a faculty of 30 artist teachers and over 160 music majors. The Department of Music presents over 200 musical performances for the public each year. In addition, several of the major performing ensembles of the department travel throughout Georgia, the Southeast, and abroad; performing for schools, civic groups, and as part of community concert series.
