Reformation Sunday Service | Sunday 30 October, 9.00amSoprano: Julee-anne Bell, Alto: Tricia Elgar, Baritone: Kristian Scott, Violin: Alice O’Donnell, Pipe Organ: Gregory Mayer

Congratulations to all of our staff members in the Junior and Middle Schools for their hard work over the last two or more years to ensure that the transition into the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) was a smooth one. I

also pass on my thanks to those parents who have given feedback, and contributed to the process during this time. We have been informed that we are now a fully accredited PYP school, and we look forward to officially ‘hanging out our shingle’ and celebrating this wonderful milestone. Congratulations and thank you must also go to Ms Jo Pearn, Ms Pam Carden, Mr Peter MacDonald and Mr Wayne Gauld for their leadership throughout the process.

Last week we were informed by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) that the newly proposed changes to senior

curriculum, assessment and Tertiary entrance had been delayed by 12 months. While this disappointing decision raises further concerns with regards to the implementation of these future changes, it is clear that we need to continue preparing for what will now be implementation at Year 11 in 2019.

Last weekend we witnessed a feast of excellence as we celebrated the end of the Music year with three major concerts. All aspects of our program were ‘showcased’ over three spectacular performances – choral on Friday evening, bands and winds on Saturday evening and the strings program on Sunday afternoon. It was indeed a wonderful celebration, a time to recognise our departing Year 12 students, and a chance for many hundreds of parents and extended families to come together to enjoy quality performances. Many thanks must go to Ms Christine Taylor, Mr Grantley Sutch, Mr David Deacon, Ms Amanda Saffery and the many committed staff members who make our Music program such a success. Of course, congratulations to hundreds of students from Year 2 to Year 12. A superb weekend was had by all!

I have been granted a week of holidays beginning Friday 28 October. In my absence, Ms Lisa Delaney will be Acting Head of College. I look forward to enjoying the weeks that are left in this school year, and to celebrating with you prior to finishing my role at St Peters Lutheran College at the end of the 2016 school year.

Kind regards

Light Shines in the Darkness

Recently, some bad things have happened in the lives of people I know and love: A death in a driveway accident at a home in which a wife ran over her husband of 47 years. A child with a life-threatening asthma attack. A parent on life-support. The loss of an unborn baby. A woman killed by her violent husband. You’ll know of many more heartbreaking situations. So much sorrow. So many tears to shed by so many.

God, how can you let this happen? Where are you in our suffering?

The first thing to note is that God doesn’t promise his people a life free of sorrow. To be human is to suffer, sooner or later. The second thing is to note God does promise that he is with us in our suffering, and that he overcomes our suffering.

“In this world you will have trouble” says Jesus, “But take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues them from them all.” Psalm 34:19

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me.” Psalm 23:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

“God will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more.” Revelation 21:4

Notice that these verses actually assume we will have troubles, afflictions, griefs and even death. But they assure us such events are not the last word.

I’m always amazed by the example of Paul the Apostle who endured so much suffering for the sake of the Gospel –floggings, beatings, stoning, shipwrecks, imprisonments, snakebite, earthquake, hunger, thirst, cold, anxiety and much more. Yet he says, “This slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure”. 2 Corinthians 4:17

I’m even more amazed by Jesus. Jesus’ death on the cross looked like his ultimate defeat. But his resurrection shows us that God’s power is seen most clearly when things seem utterly hopeless. In those moments of sorrow and bewilderment, perhaps the most comforting thing of all is to recognise what John says of Jesus: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.” John 1:5. Indeed, God’s light shines brightest when the darkness seems deepest.

When you are overwhelmed by the darkness, may you see by the light of Jesus. May you know that your suffering will pass and a brighter future is assured. And may the peace of God, which surpasses our understanding keep guard over your heart and mind in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS…Have you started Christmas shopping yet? Why not give a present that shares Christmas cheer with more than one person and help someone in need? Here are some ideas for Gifts of Grace : http://www.alws.org.au/index.php/gifts-of-grace.html

Some do this as family, choosing gifts together, some for family members (my mum and dad have been receiving some of these for several years now – and it saves postage as well), some just for fun… God bless you. Pastor Thomas. Pastor Matt Wilksch, Springfield Chaplain

What?Mrs Farrell’s Christmas present collection for disadvantaged children living in Brisbane. All presents will be collected by social workers for direct distribution to children under their care. Last year we donated over 300 presents thanks to fantastic support from the school community.

How?• Collect a Christmas gift tag from any of

the school reception offices

• Have fun choosing a present appropriate to the age and sex of the child noted on the tag

• Place the unwrapped present in a gift bag (Cheapest gift bags are at Kmart)

• Drop the present back to the office

The delivery of these presents is one of the highlights of the year for the social work staff. They are very touched every year by the generosity of our school community. It would be wonderful to have more than 300 presents to donate again this year.

Once again, the suggestion of a beach towel, especially for older children applies. These are always well received. Due to requests from many parents a suggested spending amount of around $20 has been set again for this year - but please note that all presents are gratefully received.

Cambodia Educational Tour 2017Expressions of Interest: Year 10 students

December 2017 (13 days): Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Temples of Angkor

We are seeking expressions of interest from Year 10 students for the Cambodia Tour 2017.

As the trip is designed to be of educational value, a significant component of the itinerary is concerned with the social and cultural understanding of Cambodia; including the incredible ancient history of Angkor, Cambodia’s position during the Vietnam War; and the causal factors associated with the rise of Pol Pot’s regime.

There are two service highlights: spending time at a school near Phnom Penh, interacting with children; and participating in a building project for the underprivileged on the outskirts of Siem Reap.

To express your interest, please email your son / daughter’s name to [email protected] by mid-November. An information evening will be scheduled for early 2017.

Readers’ Cup Years 10 and 7The last of this year’s Readers’ Cup competitions were held last week – Year 10 at Stuartholme College on Tuesday night and Year 7 at Hillbrook Anglican College on Thursday night. The competitions were keenly contested and the results were close for both nights. Our Year 10 team, Isabel Folland, Josh Bradbrook, Malcolm Scott, Finn Beardmore and Kyle Behrens competed enthusiastically against ten teams.

Our Year 7 teams, Nicholas O’Neill, Claire Stockwell, Magnus Blums and Thomas Feldmann and Sarah Aylward, Sophie Renton, Maddie Rushmore and Joely Balchin were great competitors. There were sixteen teams in this competition and the results changed quite dramatically during the night.

We were very proud of all our teams and it is really terrific to see how much fun they have and how much they love reading.

Junior School Gathering

Tuesday 10 November, 8:20am–9.30am Library verandah

Get red, red, ready for Day for Daniel!

With National Day for Daniel being tomorrow, Friday 28 October, the students in the Junior School will undertake a range of activities throughout the week that centre around the theme “Recognise, React, Report”.

Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. Wear Red and Educate is the theme for Day for Daniel and children will be asked to wear a red t-shirt and bring a $2 coin donation as a way of taking action within our community. This will also form part of the focus of our Junior School Assembly on tomorrow morning.

Through a series of age-appropriate activities in classrooms, students will reflect on the three key messages of how to recognise, react and report when they are unsafe.

Children will be guided through some videos and activities with their classroom teacher designed to increase the awareness of children to situations within the community which might impact upon their personal safety

and to empower them with the ability to act appropriately and with confidence. Topics include: asking your parent first; stick with a buddy; watch where you are going; trusted adults; and finding help if you are lost.

It is important that key safety messages outlined above are reinforced, both at school and home. We encourage you, wherever possible, to talk with your child about safety to help them stay safe now and in the future.

For further information, please refer to the website http://www.dayfordaniel.com.au/

World Teacher’s Day

World Teacher’s Day has also been recognised this week and presents school communities with an opportunity to acknowledge teachers and say thank you. This special day, celebrated in more than 100 countries, has wider aims of recognising the importance of motivated teachers, professional development and devoting a day of due respect to teachers.

At St Peters we will be acknowledging this day as a staff group and with the children on assembly tomorrow in conjunction with Day for Daniel. Children will be encouraged to offer their simple and heartfelt thanks to their teachers who devote endless energy, emotion, time and professionalism to the children under their care.

Parents, please come along to this special assembly!

Junior School Parent Support Meeting

Last Tuesday, our parent support group came together for the penultimate meeting for the year. Points for discussion included reflections from the Bush Dance, celebrations that will take place between now and the end of the year, and forecasting ahead for the next twelve months.

One celebration which we are keen to have helpers is the Year 4 presentation morning held on Wednesday 23rd November. Traditionally the parents of the younger grades have fired up the BBQ in the 25 metre pool area and cooked sausages for our Year 4 students for a snack after a celebratory service and swim. Their parents to enjoy the morning by attending the service and sharing a morning tea together.

We are therefore seeking parents of students in younger grades to support this event. If you are willing and available to help in this capacity, please contact the parent representative of your child’s class for further details.

Earlier this year, the JSPSG agreed to purchase some more outdoor activities for students to enjoy at break times. These have been very well received by the students who continue to enjoy their playtimes.

Assembly Awards

Last Friday we thanked and farewelled our 2016 Cross grade captains, Luc and Rhiarna. We wish them all the very best as they graduate from school in the next few weeks.

Sunset on the Beach

The ocean tugged at the shore, tearing at slippery sand,

Nipping at your ankles as the mighty ocean does.

A sun staining the sky with strawberries, lavender, blood, bees and darting clownfish.

The whisper of salt sinking into your skin and wafting through the light.

Crashing waves bound at the rocks and sand.

The crystal of the world shimmered and danced under the last streams of light.

Sand tugged out from under your feet being pulled back into the swell.

A soft wave tugs at you - begging for you to dip in

Then the sun sinks into the glowing waters - leaving you behind to play.

World Teachers’ Day Friday 28 October

Each day, Queensland teachers make a difference educating and inspiring young people across our state.

World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity to acknowledge our teachers and say thanks for the significant contributions they make in our classrooms and communities.

Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers’ Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society.

World Teachers’ Day is held internationally on 5 October. As the day usually falls during school holidays, Queensland celebrates on the last Friday of October each year.

In 2016, World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated in Queensland on Friday 28 October, during State Education Week.

I thank all our wonderful teachers at St Peters for their hard work and dedication to our students and families.

Traffic on campus

Of late we have seen an increased number of parents dropping their child off and/or picking them up within the College grounds. What is particularly alarming is that parents are stopping close to or on the clearly marked orange lines and the pedestrian zones in the Junior High/Middle School precinct. This is incredibly dangerous. In the interest of safety the College asks parents not to drop students off or pick students up within the College grounds at peak times before and after school unless a special permit has been granted due to injury or a large instrument. Please – for the safety of all our children I would ask parents to do the right thing and use appropriate places outside the grounds to drop off your children. If they are late and have to walk a couple of hundred metres, then this is a learning opportunity for them. Surely

QG & AIC Athletics

I’d like to congratulate all the Junior High students for their participation and behaviour at the recent QG & AIC Athletics carnivals. The behaviour of the students and the spirit they displayed was outstanding. We had some lovely feedback from the canteen staff that our girls were the most well-mannered they had encountered on the day. Thank you for your recognition that these days are not only compulsory but are a wonderful opportunity for students to build school spirit and develop friendships in a fun atmosphere.

Friday 28 October is ‘Day for Daniel’

The ‘Day for Daniel’ is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. It is about educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to ‘Recognise, React and Report’ if they feel something is not right. Day for Daniel is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia.

The objectives of Day for Daniel are:

•To raise awareness about child safety and protection and to promote a safer community for children.

•To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to ‘Recognise, React and Report’.

•To educate and equip individuals and communities with knowledge and skills to understand child safety and protection requirements and empower them to take action.

•To provide FREE safety and educational material.

•To honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.

•To have over 1 million people Australia Wide to participate in Day for Daniel.

All students in Junior High will have the opportunity to wear red in recognition of the importance of child safety – this includes to and from school. This is not a free dress day but a ‘themed’ day. Examples of what students can wear include:

Red embellishments with their normal uniform such as ribbons, socks etc.

HPE shorts or red shorts with a red shirt

If students are unsure of what to wear they should check with their Form Class teacher.

YEAR 7 – 2017 WELCOME MORNING – THIS SATURDAY

This Saturday we will hold our annual Junior High Welcome Morning. Thank you to those students who have volunteered to act as College Ambassadors (Tour Guides, Helpers, and Greeters etc) on the day. Your assistance on these days is invaluable and staff greatly appreciate it.

Holiday Courses for Students

Does your child want to get a head start for the academic year ahead? Does your child need some extra assistance developing good time management and study techniques in order to manage their work load and stress levels?

‘Study Crunch’ (previously known as Learn Perform’ runs holidays courses for students that are designed to assist them with developing essential study skills such as study techniques, goal setting, and time and stress management.

Students who have attended these courses in the past found that revisiting the strategies they had learnt throughout school in an intense short course was a very helpful and they really enjoyed spending a few days at University.

More information can be found on www.studycrunch.com.au

End of Year

We are now half way through the term. With the end of year fast approaching and assessment at the forefront of the students’ minds, it is a timely reminder for students to finish the year off well. Students have been reminded about behaviour and uniform expectations and to use their assessment calendar to ensure that there are no surprises with assessment deadlines.

The Year Level Coordinators are busy organising end of year celebrations for students. Students must remember that these celebrations are a ‘privilege’ and they should be careful not to jeopardise their involvement by allowing standards of conduct and behaviour to slip.

Leave Approval

Please remember that if it is your intention to take early holidays with your child then leave approval must be sought. See information in the Junior High Handbook and email [email protected]

Please note that any exams missed will most likely be unable to be rescheduled.

Music Weekend of ExcellenceUpcoming EventsMonday 31 October – Thursday 3 November - St Peters Eisteddfod

Thursday 4 November – AMEB Wind Exams

Tuesday 8 November – AMEB Brass Exams

Thursday 10 November – MEBS & Junior Ensembles Final Concert – 3:30pm- 5:00pm

Friday 11 November – Music Medallion Night – 7:00pm – 10:00pm

Thursday 24 November – Friday 25 November – Instrumental and Vocal Auditions for 2017 Ensembles

Sunday 27 November – Carols Under the Stars – 6:30pm – 8:30pm

This past weekend saw the culmination of the year in the St Peters Music Department with a series of Finale Concerts. All concerts showcased the diversity and number of ensembles in the Music Program, with students from Year 1 to Year 12 participating.

Friday evening, the Choral Department presented their “I Still Call Australia Home” Fundraising Concert. Students dressed up and sang songs from all aspects of the Australian music repertoire, from folk songs to iconic rock anthems; Australian art music to standards such as “I am Australian”. The concert concluded with a 300 voice choir performing the title song. In the words of one parent, “It may have been raining on my face during I Still Call Australia Home but I’m sure I wasn’t alone”.

The All Bands concert was celebrated on Saturday night, with parents, students and friends mingling in the amphitheatre while listening to the Stage Bands performing in the open air. The Concert Bands then continued in the auditorium with “Music from the Theatre”. The concert showed the “Circle of Life” within the Band program, with the newly

formed Concert Band 1.5 and senior students combining with younger ensembles, and finished with parents enjoying a medley of tunes from “Grease”.

Sunday saw the String Department perform their finale concert with the final combined piece premiering a new work by Year 12 Music Curriculum student Huy Nguyen ,”Builder”. Composed to include all 8 ensembles from Year 1 to 12 in incorporated 215 string students, Mr Deacon on Solo Violin, backing track, and rap vocals. This was definitely a St Peters, and maybe even a world first, collaboration.

All concerts concluded with a celebration of the Year 12 students leaving the respective programs. The Music Department Staff would like to, once again, formally thank the seniors for their commitment and dedication to their respective ensembles, and we wish them every blessing for their futures. We would also like to thank all the ensemble leaders, ensemble assistants, student mentors and accompanists who have worked with students in the cocurricular program this year helping them to achieve the excellent standard of performance evident this weekend.

COMMUNITY RUN CLUBMEET AT DOHLER BUS STOP, EVERY FRIDAY MORNING 6:30AM

AIC Basketball and TennisAnd that’s a wrap!!... Our AIC Basketball and Tennis seasons have concluded for another year.

Regardless of final ladder results, we are proud that our largest ever group of basketball teams took to the court to represent St Peters in the AIC Basketball competition this season. Competitiveness and confidence grew as the season progressed, and it is exciting to see the talent in some of our junior teams who enjoyed the most success over the last few weeks. We look forward to a bright on-court future for them! To all players and coaches, well done and thank you for your efforts this season. We hope you enjoyed the season and look forward to celebrating as a group at the AIC Basketball breakup on Thursday afternoon. I look forward to inviting all boys back to St Peters Basketball next year to build on our results.

St Peters Tennis players and their coaches continued their run of success in the final week of the competition to finish as the Overall Aggregate AIC Tennis Champion College. Most impressively, the Championship was won by a huge margin of more than 20 points and we are so proud to have brought home the aggregate trophy for a FIFTH YEAR IN A ROW!! A huge congratulations to all involved in our tennis community, in particular to our Head Coach Mark Lewis and Coordinator Mr Stuart Delaney – a fantastic reward to all for your hard work and hours devoted to our young tennis players. In addition to our overall aggregate result, congratulations must also go to the 1st IV, 10A, 10B, 9A, 9B, 8B, 7A teams who were successful in securing Premierships in their respective age groups. It is also worthy to note that all St Peters teams finished in the Top 3 of their respective age groups – a very impressive feat! Well done boys, you have done our community proud and we look forward to another strong tennis season in 2017.

AthleticsCoordinator: Mr Matt Bradforde [email protected]

Well done to all boys across Years 7 – 12 who represented SPLC at the AIC Athletics Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. There were some fantastic results on the day, including a number of personal bests being achieved in both track and field events. A more detailed wrap of results along with some photos will be included in next weeks news.

Water PoloCoordinator: Mr Ian Taylor [email protected]

Students continued their water polo season against Iona with an away game at the bayside College this evening. It is encouraging to see the enjoyment, fitness and camaraderie that is very evident amongst our water polo players each week – and great to see our Opens get up in a nail biting victory last week against Padua!

The final water polo round is listed below – good luck to all players:

Wednesday 3rd November. Marist v SPLC. Venue Marist College, Ashgrove. Bus leaves at 3:30pm

has been emailed to all students today in Grades 7 – 11. There will also be a sign up for Term 1 sports outside Café 45 at Lunchtime this Friday 28 October.

Training expectations:

A reminder to all students that if they will be absent from training or games, they are expected to notify coaches or coordinators via email AHEAD of time. Boys, this small gesture is expected out of respect to your coaches and team mates, and to ensure that appropriate arrangements can be made to best accommodate everyone. If there are any further concerns with training commitments or ‘clashes’ then the team at Sports House are here to support all boys in their pursuits.

Nominations are called for the positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer. All three positons are currently held by parents of Year 12 students. The VSG needs new people to step into all these roles.

Badminton:Coordinator: Lynne Rech – [email protected]

Congratulations to the senior girls who competed last Saturday at the QGSSSA Badminton competition. A special mention must go to the Senior Ds who finished fourth and the Open girls who placed second behind BSHS. At each venue, all girls seemed to be enjoying themselves and were representing the College well in all aspects of their play and conduct.

Good luck to the Year 7’s, Year 8’s and Year 9’s who compete this coming Saturday. Play hard and have fun! The girls have been sent the relevant information, plus times, venues and parking can be found on the Badminton Portal. A reminder that girls need to be at their respective venue half an hour before the start of play to warm –up. Plus remain for 15 minutes at the end of the match for presentations.

Date Claimer: Badminton break up will be Wednesday morning Nov. 2nd 7:15am – 8:00am. Details to be sent via email to the girls by the Badminton Captains later this week.

Water Polo:Coordinator: Mrs Elaine Ripamonti – [email protected]

Well done to all teams for another great weekend of Water Polo. There were some great results all round with the girls continuing to improve each week. A special mention to the 15’s for their convincing win against St Rita’s. We wish all teams the best of luck for Round 4! Please check the App or Portal for this Saturdays game times.

Junior (Years 7 – 9) Softball:Coordinator: Coordinator: Ms Emy Huntsman– [email protected]

We wish all girls the very best of luck for the remaining three competition days.

Softball:The QGSSSA Junior Softball team just completed their first round of games at Downey Park on Tuesday afternoon. There was great excitement amongst the team and the girls looked very smart in their PE uniform and long, maroon socks. There was a lot of enjoyment on the diamonds and plenty of learning taking place. For example, one student got a terrific surprise when she caught a foul ball on the full, thereby outing the opposing player and ending their innings which set her team up for the win! Congratulations to the 7B team who came away with a close win against BGGS and the 7As who drew with State High. The other teams all did their best and scored lots of home runs but were beaten by better teams.

Training continues as normal on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in Weeks 4 and 5. The remaining competitions are on Thursday Week 4, and Wednesday and Friday of Week 5 with training continuing as normal. Please note that as there are three rounds on both Wednesday and Friday, the bus will leave school at the end of Lunch instead of after Period 6 but will return at the same time. As always, we would love to see any supporters at Downey Park. Best of luck to the girls!

AIC Tennis training has now concluded for the year.

Sport for Life! The Sport for Life! program was developed and implemented in 2006 for students in year 5-7. Now in 2016, the focus of the program was for all individuals in Year 4-6 to participate and have fun in sporting based activities. The Recreational Sport Program will enable students to learn new skills in a particular activity. All students in Year 4-6 will take part in a different activity for each of the first four weeks of Term 1 and Term 2.

Additional to this, structured Sport Development activities will run throughout the year. This will be done during the last 4 weeks of each term and allow students to practice fundamental sporting skills, including kicking, striking, throwing and catching. This program encourages students to be active, have fun and improve coordination skills, further building their confidence. These sessions are organised to supplement the AIC and Primary Girls Sporting competition that is available for students in grades 4-6.
