both theory and practice and come to an end with the submission of fi nal mas-ter’s project. Furthermore, when they are aimed at vocational training, they include practical sessions in companies and institutions. Some of the offi cial masters can be followed up by specifi c doctorate programmes.

Doctorates

The third cycle is intended to provide students with an advanced training. Completing this cycle leads to the doctor qualifi cation. Doctorate studies include a training period and a research one. The training period can count for between 60 and 120 ECTS credits of one or various offi cial masters. The research period can include courses, seminars and other acti-vities aimed at research training. However, they always include the production and submission of a dissertation consisting of an original research project. The educatio-nal and research activities needed for the acquisition of a doctoral qualifi cation is called a doctorate programme.

This guide contains a detailed descrip-tion of all of the available doctorate and master programmes –including both those that form a part of a doctorate program-me’s training period and those that offer a specialised training that is not linked with the programmes.

For information about entrance and admission requirements, as well as any changes that might come about, please consult the General Postgraduate Service’s website: www.uv.es/postgrau/indexen2.htm.

1.1. Offi cial postgraduate studies: masters and doctorates

Offi cial postgraduate programmes are intended to further the student’s education from a professional and research viewpoint. They are articulated into two cycles, i.e. master and doctorate, which lead to the qualifi cations of master (second cycle) and doctor (third cycle). The programmes may be shared between centres, depart-ments and institutes, or between different universities and even other public or private organisations.

Master and PhD programmes are the academic responsibility of and are run by a centre, department, university research institute, or a specifi c structure created for that purpose under the supervision of the Postgraduate Study Commission.

Masters

Second cycle studies lead to the offi cial master qualifi cation. They are advanced specialised or multidisciplinary studies that either provide academic or professional specialisation or promote the carrying out of research tasks. Their length ranges from 60 to 120 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System), that is, from 1 to 2 academic years. The masters include
