Valentine’s DayValentine’s Day

On 14th February every year, people in different countries, who love each other, give each other candy, flowers and gifts all in the name of St. Valentine. So, who is St. Valentine? And, why do we celebrate this day?

St. Valentine was a priest who lived in Rome. At that time the king needed strong soldiers to join the army so he did not allow young men to get married. This made young men in Rome very sad. Valentine thought that this was not fair so he did marriages for young men and women secretly. The king found out about this and killed Valentine. Many people believe that because Valentine died in the middle of February, Valentine’s Day is to celebrate Valentine’s death. Valentine’s name became a symbol of love.

Esther A. Howland, an American woman, was the first person who designed and sold a lot of Valentine’s Day greeting cards in the 1840s. On these cards there were red lace, ribbons and colourful pictures.
