Great Artists Influence Our Work and Inspire Us to Find Our Own Artistic Path

Anna Williams was perhaps the first African American quilter whose improvisational quilts were publicly recognized as art. She “was Gee’s Bend before Gee’s Bend.” Anna and her works of art were discovered because she cleaned houses for a living. She did cleaning for art quilter, Katherine Watts, who happened to know Nancy Crow, who is also an art quilter and fiber artist. And so, Katherine introduced Anna’s art to the world. AQS published a book about her quilts in 1995 – Anna Williams: Her Quilts and Their Influences. To see photos of Anna and some of her quilts and for a link to an article written about Anna and her long friendship with Katherine, Click Here. Use Google if you would like to see additional images of Anna’s Quilts. On the back of one of Anna’s quilts, she wrote this, “I like working with col-or. Piecing helps me keep from going crazy.”

Anna Williams influenced the work of many quilters. Who has influenced your work? Have you ever created a series of quilts using a particular technique or style? Creating a series is a common practice used by artists of all genres. True artists have a unique and recognizable style that is all their own. While their work may be influenced by other artists, they find ways to create art that is original and different.

Have you created your own original style that is unique to your work? I spoke with an art

teacher in Delaware about an upcoming en plein air class he was teaching. I mentioned that

all of my art was basically copied work with a twist. He politely found an unoffending way of

saying that “real art” is never copied. I have tried to break out of that habit with my quilting,

but I am too well aware that I fall into the group of usually beginning with a design inspired

by someone else. I use a pattern, which is an exact copy. Or I “borrow” a “look” and adapt it,

but I don’t feel that my work is uniquely my own. I feel drawn to create my own original

quilting art. What holds me (us) back? I know the muse won’t walk in and hand me an

idea. I won’t just wake up one day and be inspired. I know it will come out of mindfully

working to achieve that end. Will I ever do it? Maybe. I think I’m getting closer. In the

meantime, thank Heaven for the Anna Williamses of this world!

October 18, 2016 Program Meeting

Quilt registration forms must be submitted by September 20th to Cathy Fennell.

The October meeting will be the collection of your three submissions for the quilt show.

Bring your copy of the registration forms along with your quilts to the meeting.

Once done, relax, enjoy some social time with friends and prepare for our BIG weekend.

Welcome New Member Marjorie Gavitt

Marjorie Gavitt moved here from Colorado where she was very active in a guild, the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum,

and a quilt critique group. Although she has been sewing most of her life,

Marjorie has little traditional quilting experience. She likes to make art quilts, 3-D quilting,

and surface design. She has used mixed media such as acrylics, printmaking, sculpture, fabric

dyeing, and embellishment. She also likes to garden.

Bees….Bees….Bees….Bees….

Our Bees are open to all members of the Valley Forge Homestead Quilt Guild. We work on our own hand projects (there’s not usually room for sewing machines); we assist each other by suggesting ways to layout quilt blocks, work with colors, etc.; and we enjoy each other’s company in a smaller venue. Check your cal-endar and see if you are able to join any of the Bees this month.

An RSVP to our hostesses would be appreciated to allow them to have an idea of how many to expect. Please don’t let a last minute decision keep you from coming to a Bee!

Check the VFHQ Member Directory for addresses. If you would like to host a bee, please contact a Host Coordinator.

August Guild Meeting — Ergonomics with Robert & Vitameatavegamin with Lucy (aka Jackie) !

— 9 —

August Guild Meeting — Show N Tell

— 10 —

Meeting Minutes – August 16, 2016

Jackie opened the meeting with an apology for the late start at 7:05. (Her day has been hectic with more to do than time to do it in.)

A thank you shout out was given to Linda Hamel, Jean Corday and Cathy Fennell recognizing the time, abili-ties and leadership they shared with all of us in order to complete our 2016 Raffle Quilt in time for the Her-shey Show.

Following many suggestions given by the membership regarding the time constraints put on the raffle com-mittee in the past, Jackie announced that Marisa Smith has accepted the position of Raffle Quilt Chair-person for the 2018 quilt. Marisa will be forming the committee and has asked anyone interested and any-one that has ideas regarding design, colors or mechan-ics to please contact her.

Sandy Darlington has agreed to do the quilting on her longarm machine once the top is completed.

Our new member, Alma Kretzing, was given a warm welcome and later shared a bit about her quilting path during Show and Tell. Beautiful work Alma!

The hospitality gift bags were won by Donna Raymond and Norma Brechbiel. Congratulations lucky ladies.

Phyllis Manley reported for Barbara Wright that signs and flyers for the quilt show will be available in Sep-tember. Barbara contacted many advertising vendors to spread the information about the October show. She asked members who hear or see information to please let her know where and what was seen or heard. (Barbara is keeping track for future events.) When promoting the show and/or raffle tickets we were reminded to let people know the guild is a non-profit, charitable organization.

The report for Grandma’s Attic asked that donations be held until the October meeting.

The August UFO workshop was cancelled as there were not enough members signed up.

September 24th is our annual Friendship Tea. Please sign up for finger sandwiches, salad, or dessert when the sheet comes around.

Dottie Dolgash reminded all of us to do a short write up about what we learned or what we did while mak-ing our challenge project. Bring the quilt to the Sep-tember meeting in a brown paper bag around 6:15 – 6:30 to give the hanging committee time to issue a number and to be sure all requirements have been met before the judging begins. Good luck everyone!

Sandy Dounce asked us to please sign up for white gloving and ticket selling at the Oaks show, September 15-18, 2016. Please contact her if you have any ques-tions or need to sign up.

Jackie reported that Cathy Fennell has only received six quilt entries for our show. Be sure her email ad-dress is correct, [email protected]. Notice that there are two N’s and 2 L’s.

After a short break for refreshments, Joan Gunder in-troduced Robert Cannell who educated us on the proper ergonomics for our work spaces in our sewing areas and exercises to relieve strain on our bodies. Many members tried the shoulder wraps Robert pro-vided and agreed they were comfortable. To make one, use 3-4 yards of 5” wide sturdy fabric, fold it in half lengthwise, and sew together on the long edge. Mark the middle however you wish. That’s it. Wear it as Robert showed us and feel better!!

Maxine Close won the 50/50 drawing.

Show and Tell should have inspired all of us to com-plete our projects for the quilt show - beautiful colors, varied techniques, and interesting projects! Thank you ladies for sharing.

Respectfully submitted,

Sally Chillington, Secretary
