Calendar of Events

To adults, childhood can seem like a carefree time, but children can still experience stress. things like

school and social life can sometimes create pressures that can feel overwhelming for kids. As a parent,

you can't protect your kids from stress, but you can help them develop healthy ways to cope.

Here are a few ideas:

* Notice out loud. Tell your child when you notice something is bothering him or her. If you can, name the

feeling you think your child might be experiencing, and let your child know you care and want to

understand.

* Listen to your child. Ask your child to tell you what is wrong. Listen interestingly and calmly. Take your

time, and let your child take his or her time too.

* Help your child think of things to do. If there's a specific problem that's causing stress, talk together

about what to do. Encourage your child to think of a few ideas. You can get the brainstorm started , but

don't do all the work.

* Just be there. Kids don't always feel like talking about what's bothering them. Just let your kids know

you'll be there when they feel like talking. Do something relaxing together to help relieve stress. Take a

walk, watch a movie, shoot some hoops, or bake some cookies. Isn't it nice to know your presence really

counts?

Pre-K What a BUSY six weeks this has been. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the Black Creek

Pumpkin patch near Decatur. Thanks to all the families who came along for the

fun! Our themes this six weeks included: pumpkins, Fall, spiders, fire safety, and Hal-

loween. A big thank you goes out to all our families who helped with the Fall par-

ties. You guys are the best! This time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is going to

fly by. Be looking for all the fun activities to come .

Kindergarten

Kindergarten has lot of new things going on during this second six weeks! We've

been working hard in our writing journals, learning our letters and sounds, and

counting to 100! We've already learned 16 sight words too! Once Fall arrived, we

studied the life cycle of pumpkins and their everyday uses. We even tasted some

yummy pumpkin foods! We spent a week learning about Veteran's Day and

celebrating our brave soldiers. We are very thankful for our

military men and women!

First Grade

First Grade had a very productive 6-weeks. In Social Studies, we

studied the life of Christopher Columbus and his brave voyage. We learned the importance

of fire safety in Science. Later in the 6-weeks, we celebrated Red Ribbon Week with several

fun activities. A highlight for 1st Grade was Skate Week! The students really loved this

special time! We also enjoyed Fall Carnival and our class party. This was a very busy and

exciting time for us!

Second Grade Shenanigans Second Grade has had a lot going on during the second six weeks. We have

practicing our addition facts and now we are moving on to subtraction. In social

studies we have learned about Christopher Columbus and famous inventors. For

science and health we have studied pumpkins and their life cycle, heart health,

and fire safety. We enjoyed our first BASH at the football field. Our Halloween

parties were frightfully fun!

Third Grade Time flies when you are having fun! Third grade has kept ourselves

occupied learning many new things. In Health we continued our studies

on Fire Safety. The students learned about the many jobs firefighters have and the types of

equipment they use. We also talked briefly about fire dogs and their important role at the fire

department. This six weeks in Science we learned that matter is everything around you. The

students found that physical properties of matter can be observed or measured. They used a

pan balance to measure mass and compared the volume of different objects. Our exploration of

matter will continue next six weeks. In Social Studies we are learned about 3 different

communities. Some are small and some are large. Communities are alike in some ways and

different in other ways. When you compare communities, you can tell more about the people

who live in them. We also learned about the 7 continents, Great Lakes and the four major

oceans. This six weeks our math studies included multiplication, perimeter, and graphs. Mrs.

Rico’s students created their own pixel character and found the perimeter of it. We continue

working on Reading skills to prepare for STAAR.

Fourth Grade

We celebrated Halloween with our party. In Science we learned

about different states of matter. We also learned about fire

prevention and drug awareness in Health and Social Studies. We

have been working on learning different figures of speech to use in

our writing. In Math we are continuing to work on our division and

multiplication skills.
