Counselor’s Corner

Here are some ideas for encouraging your child’s independence. Parents love their children so

much that sometimes they protect them from taking risks or failing. These types of experi-

ences are an important part of life. Parents help most when they keep kids safe, but also let

them explore and learn.

Support independent play. When your child wants to play alone or lead a game, let him.

Create a safe environment. The safer your home is, the better you will feel about letting your child investi-

gate on his own (you should supervise, of course).

Teach new skills. The more things your child knows how to do, the more self-reliant he will be.

Encourage separation. It’s scary to be apart from your child. Scheduling an occasional play time at a friend’s

house will build your child’s independence.

Perfect Attendance (continued)

Class News

Pre-K is off to a GREAT start this year. We have been working very hard at learning how

school works. We continue to work on rules and procedures each day. They are getting better

with each passing day. This first six weeks we began our letter and sound study. We have also

been working on colors, shapes, and numbers. Our unit on apples was a lot of fun, and the

homemade applesauce was yummy. Thank you, families, for sending us all those apples! This

fall is full of tons of fun! We are going to be very busy!

The first six weeks has really flown by. We are off to a

great start! We began our year by reviewing our letters,

sounds, and numbers. We had a great time learning about

each other by sharing our “All About Me” books. We are

now studying a Science unit

on pumpkins and are looking

forward to our field trip to

Black Creek Pumpkin Patch.

Some of first grade cheering

on the Eagles at a pep rally!

Kindergarten had an awesome 1st six weeks! We’ve

already started learning sight words and beginning

reading strategies. We’ve also been studying apples

and bees. Last week, we even got to visit an apple

orchard! A big thanks to all our great parents who

have volunteered at school, helped us with home-

work, and went with us on the field trip!

Our year is off to a great start. We began math by learning all about different ways to write

numbers. We’ve studied our families and our communities. Each student put together a “me

box” to share facts about themselves. We have also started learning about different animal

groups in science and germs in health. We have been reading lots of good stories and reviewing

our short and long vowel sounds.

Everyone really got into the spirit

on “Generations Day.”

Welcome back! We are off to a great start. The students

are learning new rules and working hard. In Health, we

learned about Bus Safety and Stranger Danger. Next six

weeks we will learn about Fire Safety and attend the NCTC

Fire Prevention Program. In Science, we learned about

safety in the Science classroom. We also learned how sci-

entists use the Scientific Method when conducting experi-

ments or solving problems. Next six weeks we will study

matter and energy. In Social Studies we are learning about

different communities in the United States and around the

world and how these communities are alike and different

from ours. We are also learning about the eight directions

on a compass rose. Math studies have included place value,

addition, subtraction, and rounding. We are also starting on

Reading skills to prepare for STAAR.

The 4th grade has started off the year great! We have

been very busy building our writing and math journals, learn-

ing about erosion and weathering in Science, and discussing

Texas Symbols and their importance to our great state. In

Health, the kids have really enjoyed the Buddy Project.

With this, they have learned what it’s like to be a good

friend and to say NO to bullying! Our field trip to Elm Fork

Education Center at UNT was fascinating for us all. We

learned about our solar system, aquatic living, and excavat-

ing artifacts. All in all, the beginning of this year has been a

success!

PTO News

Please join us on Saturday, October 22nd, for the annual PTO Fall Carnival and Auction. This is

our major fundraiser for the year and we need your support. The carnival and auction are

from 5-7 pm at the new ag building. Bring the kiddos for lots of games, activities, concessions,

and fun!

Valley View Elementary is sponsoring the Three for Me

program which is coordinated through the PTO.

Research has shown that active family involvement in the

school has benefits for everyone. We are asking all par-

ents to donate three hours of their time during the

course of the year. There are numerous opportunities to

help out your school and teachers, whether that’s

through volunteering with fundraisers, bringing food for

events, providing students with extra help, completing

classroom tasks, and so on. If you are volunteering at the school during school hours, you

must complete a background check form. Please see any PTO officer for details. All fami-

lies that complete their three hour commitment will be invited to an end of the year cele-

bration to thank you and your family for your support!

Jose Garcia from Mrs. Howard’s Kin-

dergarten class won the Box Top Back

to School Blue Backpack Drawing!

If you have any questions, please ask any one of us.

Thanks for all you do to support our school!
