We know you might not have it all figured out right now. And that’s okay.

Your professors and academic advisor will guide you. You’ll have the freedom to explore a variety of classes, and if you change your mind along the way you can rest easy knowing Valpo offers more than 70 undergraduate degree programs and interdisciplinary options throughout our five undergraduate colleges.

You’ll take classes in the humanities, arts, sciences, and social sciences along with courses required by your major. And, you’ll have options. Add a humanitarian engineering minor and develop a background in politics, history, and cultural awareness as it relates to engineering. Maybe you want to open your own photo gallery. A minor in business administration will complement your photography concentration and prepare you with business fundamentals to succeed.

Each step of the way, your advisor will guide you as you discover how to turn your passion into a rewarding career.

Page 6: Valparaiso University 2015 Viewbook

START AT THE COREIf you’re like most Valpo students, you’ll take Core, a two-semester, interdisciplinary freshman course focused

on the human experience. In Core, students explore the most essential aspects of human existence including

origins, coming of age, citizenship, love, vocation, and loss. The class meets four hours each week, and the fifth

hour is for you to think outside the box and learn through film screenings, arts performances, and cultural

exchanges. You’ll also be able to choose from more than 35 lectures each year that have featured guest speakers

like Spike Lee, Tom Skilling, and the late Maya Angelou.

VALPO’S HONORS COLLEGE

Many colleges and universities offer an honors program for you to further develop your skills. At Valpo, we have an entire honors college with its own interdisciplinary faculty who will work closely with you and other academically talented students.

Examine the great works of history, literature, drama, philosophy, and religion. Our honors college, based on the Oxford and Cambridge model, is one of the first and finest in the country. It’s known throughout the world as Christ College — The Honors College, but around here, we just call it “CC.”

YOUR COHORTYour classmates are driven, hard working, and invested in their success and in the Valpo community, which you’ll call home. Expect success of yourself and others, and push yourself to raise the bar. At Valpo, everyone works toward the same goal: excellence. Here, it’s safe to try new things and to sometimes stumble, knowing your friends and advisors will be there to support and encourage you.

Page 7: Valparaiso University 2015 Viewbook

You’re looking for a college that’s the best fit. What you’ll find is that Valpo students not only fit, they belong.

Like the doors on every freshman floor, the campus is wide open. And, you’ll find the people to be open too.

Make yourself at home in one of eight residence halls, where you have people to help and support you and space to roam and explore. You have guaranteed campus housing for your first three years, and the people you meet in your freshman hall just might become friends for life.

Outside of class, your schedule will be filled with athletics and intramurals, arts and culture, sorority and fraternity life, and everything in between.

It’s no coincidence the Harre Union sits at the center of campus. As the hub of student life, the Union houses the Campus Café (grab a Starbucks Coffee) and Founders Table, with its own executive chef. Student-led programming brings musicians, comedians, and magicians throughout the year, and the building is open for late-night study sessions, coffee runs, or even just time to hang out with friends.

1/3OF VALPO STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SORORITY AND FRATERNITY LIFE

MEETS PURPOSEMEETS PURPOSEMEETS PURPOSE

People with common interests find each other here. At Valpo, you’ll have the opportunities of a large university, and you’ll be able to lead, serve, and impact life on campus and in the community.

Page 14: Valparaiso University 2015 Viewbook

At Valpo, you’ll learn not only how to make a living but

how to make a life.

Go ahead and ask questions, we’re used to it. Valpo is a Lutheran university, following in the tradition of 16th century German friar Martin Luther, who asked very difficult questions and sparked a reformation.

What does this mean? You have the freedom to search for truth, develop critical reasoning, deepen your faith, and discover your purpose among people of many backgrounds and beliefs.

In fact, the idea of your life’s calling — or your vocation — is a Lutheran understanding. You’ll be encouraged to discover how your deepest passions and abilities will serve the genuine needs of the world.

At Valpo, you’ll learn not only how to make a living but

how to make a life.

Page 15: Valparaiso University 2015 Viewbook

You’ll become a leader through life-changing service experiences that help people and communities while deepening your own understanding of the world and yourself. Valpo students dedicate more than 220,000 hours to community outreach and service learning each year in their local communities, across the country, and around the world.

Students on the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) raised nearly $38,000 through the 2015 World Relief Campaign. which helped provide orthopedic care to children with limb disabilities in developing countries.

WHERE INQUIRY MEETS UNDERSTANDING

Valpo students in every college pursue knowledge through undergraduate research. You’ll learn valuable skills and develop insights to take into the world. Dive into the unknown to uncover new possibilities. From studying the architecture of running shoes* to creating a sensor that detects carbon monoxide in living cells,* you’ll prepare to solve the world’s big problems.
