In addition, they have been volunteering in the community, baby- sitting for relatives, dog walking and other odd jobs for neighbours, helping at Parents’Evenings, collecting World Book Day books for Cape Town and being a source of support for their own families. School Chaplain, Mr Nihill said: “It’s fantastic to see yet another cohort of students complete the award and to know that this great work will be replicated every year. Show Racism the Red CardYear 12 and 13 led the school in being loud and proud, showing Racism the Red Card by sporting their various red items of clothing last Friday. We had a thought-provoking University Challenge looking at bias in the media, major historic events and messages of hope for greater tolerance and awareness of this important issue. It was great to see so many of our students wearing red to send a message of support for anti-racism education in schools across the country.

Sixth Form Discretionary Fund Archbishop Holgate’s Sixth Form students can apply for Discretionary Funding. This fund is accessible to students whose households annual income is £35,000 or below and can be used to pay for a range of educational costs, eg transport to universities, books, contributions to course trips, etc. An application pack is available from Mrs Walton in the Sixth Form or email [email protected].

Student LeadersAfter half-term, Year 12 Student Leaders will start in their new roles. Interviews took place this week and it was a great honour to witness with excellent leaders ready to take the baton. I want to take this opportunity to thank our Year 13 Student Leaders who have supported the school, the community and the Sixth Form for a whole year without complaint and with admirable dedication. We really do rely on the support and goodwill of our students and this does not go unmissed or unappreciated. Thank you for your efforts and for being a reliable source of support. Take this time to tackle the challenge that Year 13 brings – you have what it takes to be great!

Message from Head of Year 8Seemingly in the blink of an eye, we have now reached the final week of half-term. Year 8 have made an excellent start to the year, and myself and Mrs Chappell are enjoying getting to know the year group more and more with every day that goes by. As the period of settling back into school life is well and truly over, now is the time to consolidate and push on to get the most out of this year as possible.Year 8’s attendance this year has been growing as the half-term has progressed. 8Pl and 8ALa have led the way with attendance, winning the Attendance Trophy and prize twice. 8Pl have also made Dr Paul very proud by voting to donate their prize (a tub of chocolates) to the Foodbank, which is an excellent example of the school values in action. 8By and 8RNe have also won the award once each this half-term, and 8SRo have also won the award for the first time in Week 7 with 100% attendance which is excellent to see. These rewards are our positive way to reinforce the importance of school attendance. Anything that can be done to keep students in school and keeping attendance high will ensure children are making the most of the excellent learning opportunities across the curriculum here at Archbishop Holgate’s School. I thank you for your continued support with this.Running the Gold Award this year has been an excellent opportunity for me to not only reward those who stand out with their exceptional achievements, but those who simply do the right things and show the school values every single day. Recent winners this half-term include Henry Lucas (8MPe), Ivy Robinson (8Wb), Ruby Hunter (8RGi), Lauren Taylor (8Pl), Madison Bayes (8RNe) and Ben Kinder (8MPe). Further to this, Ananya Valluri (8Pl) has also won the award after only her first week in school which is wonderful to see. These students will all receive a £5 gift voucher as a reward for their exceptional effort and behaviour, and they should be very proud of themselves. Furthermore, the merit competition is still ongoing for Year 8, with the form with the most merits receiving a Pizza Party as their reward. It’s wonderful for me to be able to reward students in this way, and I look forward to hearing more stories of the accomplishments and acts of kindness amongst the Year 8s as time progresses. As I mentioned in my previous update, homework is a huge focus of the school this year. Not only does this allow students to make progress outside of the classroom environment, but it will get students into good working habits that will be extremely beneficial as they move up through the school (not forgetting that GCSE options will be happening later in this academic year!). Staff are also working hard to make sure students are sufficiently supported with homework, and that it is purposeful and recognised through marking and feedback in lessons. The majority of the year group are coping with the demands of homework extremely well, and this is excellent to see. In recent weeks however, there has been slip amongst some in the year group. Myself and Mrs Chappell are keen to maintain the highest possible standards with homework, and we are continuously supporting students in order to make sure they are meeting deadlines and producing homework of an excellent standard. Homework Club will run all year from Monday to Thursday in BS1, 3.10-4.00pm. This is not only a place where homework can be completed, but where students can get help and support where necessary. We thank you for your continued support as we strive to instil a strong work ethic at home that will help students to make continued progress as they progress through the school. Year 8 are continuing to make myself and Mrs Chappell proud every day – they have settled well and need to continue working hard to consolidate their positive start to the new school year. Finally, the Accelerated Reader Programme continues this year under the stewardship of Miss Woolerton. This is an excellent programme to not only support students with their learning, but to continue to foster a love of reading that will continue throughout their lives. As students take quizzes when they have finished their current book, recent ‘Top Quizzing’ classes include 8a1 (Miss Kady’s class) and 8a3 (Miss Woolerton’s class), with the top quizzers in those classes including Amber Lee (8Pl) and Jamie Hope (8MPe) – Well done! Please encourage your children to complete as many quizzes as possible to make the most of this excellent opportunity. As I said in my previous Newsletter entry, if you have any issues regarding your child in Year 8, whether it be related to homework completion or any other issues, please do get in contact with the school and ask for either Mr Arthur or Mrs Chappell and we’d be happy to help. God bless, Mr Arthur and Mrs Chappell

This week, the KS4 Student Council met to introduce themselves to each other and discuss potential areas for focus in the council. They highlighted lots of positives in the school and agreed on a range of academic and pastoral priorities to explore throughout the year. Here are some highlights: The KS4 council highlighted the following areas of school that they really like: • The Year 11s in the council discussed the additions to the Common Room, including the impact of bean bags, to make it a more comfortable space. • The Year 11s also highlighted how they appreciate having different spaces, such as the Library, to work in as a silent study space. • The students also discussed how staff do lots of things to help them prepare for exams and how they feel are supported to work independently. • They also discussed how they felt staff trusted them to take risks in lessons and experiment with different ways of learning. The KS4 council highlighted the following areas for development: • The council would like the school to look at ways to make the curriculum and enrichment activities more relevant for real life. In particular, they would like examples of how to engage with politics and the voting system in assemblies. • They like the work the school is doing to become more trans-inclusive and would welcome some strategies to make some communal spaces, such as toilets, gender neutral in specific parts of the school. • They would like to see more done in school to highlight diversity and offer more diverse role models and celebration of people from different cultures. • The range of food available needs reviewing again to meet the needs of students, in particular, students would like to see a wider variety of healthy options in the food. As a council, the students want to prioritise the following this year: • Like the KS3 council, the KS4 council want to focus on the healthiness of school food. The council felt school can do more to help students make healthy choices in the school canteen and have ideas about how to promote this. • Promoting diversity and a more inclusive environment. • Find more ways to help students feel more “world ready”.

NetballWe had two Y11 netball fixtures this week against Millthorpe School. Closely contested by both teams, but narrowly beaten for the win. All students played exceptionally well showing team spirit, compassion for others and determination. Well done to all the ladies that took part.

RugbyThe Y7 rugby squad participated in their first RFU festival on Thursday. The boys were in great form and were by far the most dominant team at the event. Mr Goldsmith continues to be impressed by the commitment, enthusiasm and teamwork of these students. Evan Woodworth, who organises the competitions and coaches in the majority of York schools said, “There is some serious talent in that team”. Well done boys, keep up the hard work!

PanathlonY7 student, Jack Taylor took part in the Northern Divisional Multisport Final of the 'Panathlon'. He competed as part of Jo Ro's team (who finished second), representing them in 'table cricket', 'wheelchair slalom', 'power chair races' and 'bean bag throwing'. Jack also met Great Britain wheelchair racer, Nathan Maguire, who displayed his one gold and three bronze medals, which he won in August at the European Championships in Berlin. Well done Jack!

FootballThe Y11 football team were in action in the County Cup against Scalby School in Scarborough last week. The side started well with some great link up play, but found themselves going down 3-1 at half time. The team started the second half on the front foot scoring two early goals. It looked as if we were set for extra time and penalties, but a late goal from Callum Rutland

in the dying minutes of the game sealed the 4-3 win and sends the team into the next round. Player of the Match went to the superb Adam Hunter who put in a faultless display between the posts.

Y7 & Y9 FootballCongratulations to the Y7 football team for wining 9-3 against Tadcaster. Stand out players were Will Flatt scoring no less than 4 goals and Harry Pool. The Y9 team were not as lucky losing 3-1, however Cole Gayles was able to get his name on the score sheet.
