Steri le valves – Health-essential cleanl iness
Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I S ter i lvent i le 5
The purity and quality of our food and medicines have improved tremendously over recent years. In addition to stringent regulations and licensing conditions, GEMÜ hasplayed an important role in this development.
Thanks to the aseptic sterile GEMÜ valves, today's processesare purer and cleaner than they were 40 years ago. Our diaphragm valves find just as much use in yoghurt or tooth-paste manufacture as in eye ointment, insulin or monoclonalantibodies production.
Very pure media for the semiconductor and microelectronicssegments use aseptic stainless steel valves as well as, forexample, fine chemicals. Depending on the model, the valvesare suitable for water of ultra high purity (WFI), chemicals ofultra high purity, and semi-manufactured and finished products in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food processingand chemical industries. The valve technical design makesthem sterilisable and autoclavable. Aseptic diaphragm valvesalso make very good control valves. Incidentally, we aretoday's market leader for multi-port valve blocks, and theseunits are becoming smaller, more compact and easier to sterilise.

Pharmaceutical filling machine GEMÜ 650 diaphragm valves are used in numerous machinesfor sterile filling of liquid medicines of all kinds.
DE-CIP installation for pharmacyThe decentralised CIP machine ensures residueless cleaning ofpreparation tanks, pipes, storage tanks, etc. . The cleaningliquids are prepared in the preparation tank. GEMÜ 625 T-valvesdose the DI water.
Liquid media production plant The plant is divided into the areas of raw material supply, prepa-ration of liquids, stacking liquids and cleaning. The DI water andvarious alcohols are fed through GEMÜ 688s with two stageactuators. Combined with a mass flow counter it is possible toensure quick and precise dosage. Other valves used are theGEMÜ 612 manual valves and the GEMÜ 687 pneumatic valves.

Butt weld spigot bodies
Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I But t weld sp igot bodies16
The ISO butt weld spigot is a popular connection in theGEMÜ aseptic valve range but also other standard butt weldspigots such as DIN selection series 0, DIN 11850 - series 1,DIN 11850 - series 2, DIN 11850 - series 3, BS O.D. Tubing,ASME-BPE, JIS and SMS 3008 are available as standard products. The lengths of our butt weld spigot bodies are designed to provide the optimum for automatic orbital
welding. The butt weld spigot lengths guarantee trouble-freemounting and welding in an orbital welding machine using thecollets and welding heads commonly used in the Biopharmindustry. We recommend this type of welding to achieve thebest possible weld quality, which should be carried out bysuitably qualified and certified welders.

Clamp bodies
Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I C lamp bodies18
All clamp connections are machined according to the spigotdimensions e.g. to DIN 11850, SMS 3008 or ASME BPE. We ask our customers to state which version or standard theconnections shall comply with.Depending on the version, clamps are machined from thesolid forged body, not welded on. Investment cast bodieshave welded on clamps. All welds are carried out by specially
qualified and certified welders utilising state-of-the art weldingtechnology. In principle, special connections requested bycustomers can be provided on GEMÜ butt weld spigot bodiesand it is also possible to have different connections on onebody.

Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I i -bodies26
The evolution from welded SAP valve configurations according to the 6D- or 3D-rule to modern M-blocks showsthe advantages of M-blocks very clearly. The i-body (integratedsampling) from GEMÜ can be seen as an intermediate step toan M-block turned from a valve body. It offers a low cost andgood alternative to the M-block for a number of combina-tions. The i-body already exhibits two essential features of an M-block. It has a greatly reduced dead volume and no morewelds in the product area. The drain or supply spigot is onlywelded on behind the valve seat.
"i"-bodies are a special construction type of the classical 2/2-way bodies. "i" stands for integrated sampling, steam andcondensate valve. The valve bodies have two valve seats and3 pipe connections and are manufactured from a forgingblank or a piece of block material. The major advantages of i-bodies compared to standard sampling or condensate valvebodies are as follows:
· Compact construction and reduced weight
· Minimal deadlegs
· No weld in the product area
· Horizontal spigot available
· No rear mounted operators
· Cost effective
· Draining in vertical mounting position possible if adhering to the 3D-rule
· Better drainability than with welded combinations
· Pneumatic and manual operators for both valve seats are available

The arrangement of two valves welded together to suit therespective application provides maximum functionality in arestricted space. The assembly does without a T piece andthus the dead space between the valves is essentially reduced and one weld is no longer necessary. If superiordesigns are required, we recommend using valves from theGEMÜ M600 series which are machined from a single piece.

M600 Mult i -port valves
Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I M600 Mul t i -port va lves30
GEMÜ M600 multi-port valves are the most progressive solu-tion for meeting the high demands of the pharmaceuticalindustry. Complex processes using welded fabrications areoften still being implemented today, more than 15 years afterthe market launch of the first M-blocks. The valves, fittingsand pipe components used for this require a lot of space, agreater installation and welding effort on site and lead to acorrespondingly high validation expense. Not to mention ahigh hold-up volume and larger deadlegs in compliance withthe conventional 6D or 3D rules. To make processes safer, increase the availability of the plants and reduce the lifecycles costs of a plant within the scope of a total cost of
ownership concept, GEMÜ has implemented more than 400different designs and thousands of customer specifiedvariants of multi-port valves over the years. We support ourcustomers with ideas and initial drafts already in the planningphase. The drafts are then implemented constructively in our3D CAD system, agreed in close co- operation with the customer and then machined in our highly efficient machinepark. We machine several thousand blocks weighing between0.1 kg and 500 kg per year on multi-axis machining centres.Every day, our Design Centre turns out new customer speci-fied block designs.

Material selection
Before selecting the body and diaphragm materials eachapplication should be analyzed. As there are often differentworking conditions at different points of a plant, different valvesand materials may have to be used. This applies particularlywhere chemicals are utilized or where higher temperaturespromote chemical reactions. The suitability of the materials tobe used must be checked in each case by reference to thevalid chemical resistance chart or by an authorized specialist. This is one sure way to ensure that the application workssafely and cost effectively for a long period of time.
Fixing the diaphragm
A typical feature of fixing the diaphragm by means of a threaded pin is that the power transmission is distributed tothe large surface of the flanks of the screw thread in contrastto bayonet fixing. This prevents damage to the mechanicalconnection between compressor and diaphragm especiallyunder vacuum working conditions. Another GEMÜ advantageis the uniform EPDM and PTFE diaphragm fixing. This enables valves to be fitted with other diaphragms later without exchanging the entire actuator.
Soft elastomer diaphragms
Soft elastomer diaphragms consist of a mixture of rubberswhich are cross-linked with each other (vulcanized). Theyhave different technical properties depending on the mixturesused, the vulcanization temperature and pressure as well asthe duration of the cross-linking process. A basic feature ofsoft elastomer diaphragms is that the higher their resistanceis to temperature, the lower is their service life with regard tomechanical stability. Thus it is possible to produce EPDMseals which can be used at temperatures over 180°C but onlywhen they are used statically e.g. as an O-ring in a flange. When such a seal is subject to dynamic load, it is destroyed.Diaphragms used in valves must be made to optimally resistboth the temperature and deformation. For this reason various versions are available for different applications.A typical feature of soft elastomer diaphragms is their highinsensitivity to working media which are mechanically polluted by e.g. cellular lumps, solid matter or catalytic solidmatter and as a rule, neither the valve function nor the valveleaktightness are impaired. A choice of different materials is available depending on the working / sterilization temperatures and the chemical properties of the working media. (EPDM Code 13/3A, 16/6A).

Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I D iaphragms 37
PTFE Diaphragms
Our diaphragms are manufactured from a modified PTFE andoffer the highest possible degree of chemical resistance andthey age much more slowly than a soft elastomer when steamis applied. When used with strongly diffusing working media, the relatively rough structure of PTFE materials requires a certain bonding thickness which stiffens the diaphragm compared to a pure soft elastomer diaphragm. The laminateddiaphragms (code 52/5A) can be effected as the PTFE andelastomer materials which are bonded to each other, areaffected by their different modulus of elasticity. This can becompared with the sandwich construction of plane wings orwith copper clad aluminium sheet used in racing where thesestiffening effects are desirable. However, the diaphragm service life when cycled suffers from increased stiffness. Thiscan be prevented by having no firm connection betweenPTFE and soft elastomer. This solution is offered by the flexible PTFE diaphragms of the GEMÜ series 5E and 5S. Dueto its single component construction it is easy to change thebacking diaphragm which enables simple adaption to eachapplication. In combination with a Silicone backing diaphragm this range can be safely used up to 160°C perma-nently. All the advantages of PTFE and the flexibility of an elastomer diaphragm are united in this product. The contourof this diaphragm in the open position corresponds to thecontour in the closed position and thus almost no deformingforce acts upon the diaphragm when the valve is closed. Onlythe force necessary for sealing is required for reliable function. This design enabled the closing forces to be mini-mized thus clearly increasing the service life of the diaphragms. This contrasts with soft elastomer diaphragmswhich are easily deformable by nature.
Code 52 Convex diaphragm Code 5E and 5S
EPDM Code 13
This diaphragm is suitable for installations which have to besteam sterilized. The mixture used is a temperature resistantvariant where the mechanical deformation ability was clearlyincreased. It offers a high standard within the GEMÜ valverange for pharma, food and biotech applications.
EPDM Code 16
For this diaphragm the advantageous properties of differentmaterials were used. In its core there is a mixture of EPDMand Kevlar fibres. It provides the diaphragm with high mecha-nical stability without stiffening it. This core is encased in anunfilled EPDM mixture. Although the maximum temperatureof 150°C could not be increased by this, the service life withregard to mechanical stability could be further improved. Thishighly modified variant, however, is only recommended whenthe diaphragm with reference number 13 reaches its limits.
The service life of a diaphragm is not only dependent on the tempe-
ratures but also considerably on the individual operating conditions
and their interactions.

Globe valves for steam appl icat ions
Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I Globe va lves for s team appl icat ions74
Sterile production plants normally use in-place sterilisation(SIP). Globe valves with simple on/off operation or more complex control functions control the steam. A valve withcontrol function 1 (normally closed) is preferrably used so thatit is only actuated for feeding steam. It is important whenusing globe valves that the valve spindle seal is always supplied with steam. This avoids external impurity ingress. The steam must always flow through the valve with the plug.To avoid water hammer with liquid media, exactly the oppositeapplies. Here the medium must flow against the plug
Ideally, GEMÜ 550 and GEMÜ 554 series angle seat globevalves should be used for controlling steam in sterile applica-tions. Both valves can be fitted with position indicators andcontrollers for automation. A variety of control tasks can becarried out in conjunction with regulating cones
Other details on globe and control valves are to be found inour brochure "Globe valves - Automation and Control"

Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I How to order/Type key96
The GEMÜ ordering system is based on the type key shownbelow. It enables you to clearly define the product you desire. When you want to define a valve, first select thetype, the nominal size, the body configuration, the
connection, the body material etc. and then write down thecorresponding code number in the correct sequence. Toavoid mistakes we suggest that you insert oblique strokesbetween the individual numbers.

GEMÜ angle gauge
Valves for S ter i le Appl icat ions I GEMÜ angle gauge 99
GEMÜ has developed a patented angle gauge to simplifymounting 2/2-way stainless steel diaphragm valve bodies. The angle gauge enables quick and simple determination ofthe correct mounting position of a diaphragm valve body. Theangle gauge is placed on the valve body so that its locationspigots engage in the holes intended for diaphragm fixing. It isthen locked by an eccentric cam at one of the location spigots. The flow direction is clearly identified to preventincorrect positioning. The correct mounting angle, dependenton the connection type, is indicated in the brochure "2/2-WayValve Bodies for Sterile Applications". The given angle is seton the angle gauge. The valve body is rotated until the spirit islevel. Then the body is mounted according to its connectiontype. The angle gauge is available for diaphragm sizes 10 –80.
