“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”
History of the Olympics The Olympics take
place every 4 years. The Winter Olympics only include events that take place on snow or ice.
In 1992 the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics split. They are held every four years but two years apart.
The Winter Olympics were held in Calgary in 1988.
The Summer Olympics were held in Montreal in 1976.
Olympics Mascot I am most like Quatchi because I like
watching hockey. Quatchi is a goalie and hopes to meet Olympic Hockey players. My favourite team is the Vancouver Canucks.
Miga likes surfing at the beach and so do I . I like surfing at the beach just like Miga. Miga likes making friends. Miga’s favourite food is salmon . Snowboarding is her favourite winter sport. Miga’s favourite colour is forest green. I love forest green too!
My other favourite mascot is Sumi because I like his hat
and his big wings!
Have you ever seen Mukmuk? Well he is a marmot . Mukmuk is the official mascot in cyberspace! He loves
to eat and one of his favourite foods is flowers. Mukmuk lives on Vancouver Island. His hobbies are
eating, burrowing, eating, and making friends. His dream is being a official mascot at the Olympics. Vancouver Island marmots only live on Vancouver
Island and are an endangered species.
The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is the longest in history! The flame was lit by the sun in Greece where it traveled for 8 days before it was handed over to Canada. It was then flown by jet to Victoria on October 30, 2009. This was the official start to the Olympic torch relay. The torch represents peace, friendship and goodwill. It began in 1936.
The VANCOUVER Winter Olympic Logo has a mascot that represents the Inuit Inukshuk. The Inukshuk is a stone marker that helps guide people in Northern Canada.
The logo represents friendship, cooperation, leadership and human spirit. The Vancouver Inukshuk is called “Ilanaaq” which means “friend”.
