Celebrated all over the world, Diwali is the biggest, brightest and most popular event on the Indian calendar Diwali means “row of lighted lamps”, with light symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, prosperity over poverty and knowledge over ignorance. Celebrated on a grand scale in almost all regions of India, Diwali is a festival of unity. For many South Asians, it is also looked on as the beginning of the New Year. People express their happiness by lighting earthen clay lamps (diyas), decorating their houses with rangolis, lighting firecrackers, exchanging gifts and sweets, as well as celebrating with dance, music and storytelling.

The Vancouver Celebrates Diwali Festival is managed by the VCD Organizing Committee and the registered non-profit Diwali Celebration Society. Our goals include:

• Celebrating the diversity of art forms from South Asia by showcasing local artists who practice in a variety of disciplines & giving them an opportunity to present their work to a range of audiences

• Encouraging participation & breaking cultural barriers, allowing all communities to experience the Diwali spirit & learn the traditions of their friends & neighbours.

• Exploring how traditional South Asian arts evolve into fusion forms in the context of new countries and contemporary values.

Our Festival honours basic principles established over 5000 years ago: light over darkness, goodness over evil, enlightenment over ignorance and prosperity over poverty—and this forms the essence of our mission: to gather people from all walks of life in a celebration of the universal light that exists in everyone.

Initiated in 2004 by a group of dedicated volunteers, Vancouver Celebrates Diwali has grown to become a regular fixture in the City’s cultural calendar. The Festival now receives funding support from the City of Vancouver, Canadian Heritage, the BC Arts Council, the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation, and the Roundhouse Community Centre. Our first event in 2004 drew 800. Our 6th Anniversary Festival in 2009 gathered almost 5,300 people to our events! Canada now celebrates Diwali on a nationwide scale. Prime Minister Stephen Harper included a VCD message for last year’s festivities. And since 2007, Vancouver Celebrates Diwali has included the presence of the Mayor of Vancouver to read a Diwali Proclamation in a special ceremony at City Hall. At last year’s Diwali Downtown, Mayor Gregor Robertson was in attendance as our guest of honour. Through arts and culture, we wish to communicate our vision to a wider audience and invite that audience to be an integral part of all the charismatic splendor of Diwali. The VCD Organizing Committee is proud to showcase classical, contemporary and fusion South Asian artists from Vancouver and across the world, many of whom are breaking new ground in dance, music, comedy, film, the visual arts and poetry.

SSSpppaaarrrkkksss ooofff BBBrrriiilllllliiiaaannnccceee::: OOOuuurrr 222000111000 PPPrrrooogggrrraaammm Last year’s Festival was an immense success in terms of growth, participation and artistic excellence, easily surpassing all expectations. For this year we are choosing to replicate and refine that success. This year’s 7th anniversary Festival takes place November 2 – November 7. We’re bringing back all of our favorite events, promising to take VCD to new prominence among Vancouver festivals.

Opening Ceremonies This event kicks off the Festival on November 2 at City Hall, right in Council Chambers! With the Mayor of Vancouver in attendance along with other civic, corporate and political honoured guests, this event is a great media and networking opportunity, and a chance to get some face-to-face time with the Mayor! The ceremonial program includes the lighting a Diwali diya lamp by Mayor Robertson, reading of the proclamation, performances, and a catered reception.

Arts & Culture Workshops Diwali’s Arts & Culture Workshops take place throughout the festival at community centres across the city. Over 1000 students, youth, families and seniors participate in activities such as rangoli design, diya lamp painting, interactive bhangra dancing, Diwali storytelling and mehndi hand painting, all taught by professional artists. These workshops help to bridge cultural gaps by bringing the Diwali spirit into the neighbourhoods of Vancouver. Between 7 – 10 workshops will take place over the course of the Festival.

Diwali Downtown – Our Festival’s Biggest Event for 2010

Last year’s Diwali Downtown brought in record audience numbers to the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown. Due to this immense success, the Roundhouse has invited us to expand our programming this year and take over the entire facility. Diwali Downtown will be a massive multi-stage event with programming taking place over the course the entire day on November 7. This event showcases a wide range of South Asian performing and visual artists, ranging from the emerging to the established. All events are free of charge (with the exception of Moving Landscape) and accessible to the general public. This is a high visibility event for corporate sponsors, with several opportunities for support available. This massive events will draw upwards of 3,500 – 4,500 people over the course of the day with a wide-ranging multicultural audience. This exciting community event will include:

Page 6: Vancouver’s Celebration of the Indian Festival of Lights Sponsorship Package.pdf · Celebrated all over the world, Diwali is the biggest, brightest and most popular event on the

• Diwali Downtown Main Performance: Between 50 – 70 performing artists (music, dance, poetry, comedy) will perform in a six-hour set.

• South Asian Film & Comedy Series: This event will screen a curated series of films

and multimedia works from South Asian filmmakers across the Lower Mainland, as well as a live original performance by Vancouver’s favorite South Asian comedy group Bollywood Shenanigans.

• Massive Paint-by-Numbers Rangoli: We are very excited by this new twist on one

of our events. Rangolis are colorful floor mosaics where diverse materials (lentils, rice, sand) are laid out in intricate patterns. In the past, we created small rangolis that were presented as a static display. This year, we will be inviting our audience to participate in building a massive rangoli that will cover an entire floor. And we’re going to film the entire day-long process!

• Interactive Bhangra & Dhol Drumming Workshops: This is a very active audience

experience, where hundreds of people learn bhangra dance, all choreographed by professional dancers and accompanied by energetic drummers.

• Diya Painting Workshop: This workshop is very popular with children. Diyas are

clay candle holders that are painted in bright colors, and are the emblem of Diwali.

• Food & Crafts Bazaar: Several South Asian food and crafts vendors will be on hand across the Roundhouse facility, helping to provide the sights, smells and atmosphere of a bustling Punjabi market.

• Chai House Second Stage: Taking place in the same space as the Food & Crafts

Bazaar, the Chai House Second Stage will be a more intimate performance setting where audiences can be entertained while they stop to eat, but in a more relaxed environment. We will program sketch comedy & music acts, repeating the program several times per day. And of course, chai tea will always be on hand.

• Mehndi / Henna Hand Painting: In previous editions of the Festival, this extremely

popular activity had lineups all day long. We bring in expert mehndi artists to create the intricate hand tattoos, and our audience receive these works of art free!

• Visual Arts Display: This display will be a curated exhibit of 3 – 5 South Asian visual

artists working in different mediums (painting, sculpture, pottery), taking place at different spaces throughout the facility.

• Interactive Audience Video Booth: This year, we will create a video booth where

audience members can record their answers to the question “What is Diwali?”

• Stakeholder Reception: Since our many partners and supporters are extremely valuable to us, we wish to extend our gratitude by hosting a private reception. This low-key reception for 25 – 40 people will include a guest speaker and special performance. It will take place shortly after the VIP speeches kick off the Main Performances.

• Sponsor Activation Stations: Certain corporate and media sponsors will be

permitted to set up activation tables for our large audiences. These stations will likely occupy several prominent high-traffic areas of the Roundhouse, with several activities surrounding.

GGGlllooowwwiiinnnggg OOOppppppooorrrtttuuunnniiitttiiieeesss As a community focused organization, we only work with a few key partners to produce our well-attended and far-reaching events. This approach allows us to maintain our appeal as a community event, while providing maximum return on investment for our sponsors.

Vancouver Celebrates Diwali strikes a balance between corporate sponsorship and our commitment to community Our sponsorship structure provides choices ranging from sponsorship of the entire festival, or a more focused approach that suits your organization. Our commitment in producing each year’s Diwali festival is to put the primary focus on showcasing local artists and to spread our message of unity, while providing our supporters with the recognition and representation they deserve. Vancouver Celebrates Diwali’s sponsors will not be a victim of “logo soup” on our marketing materials. In maintaining clarity of our own message, we ensure that logo representation for sponsors is clear, specific and presented with due prominence.
