Investing in International Trade Fairs: a strategic choice.

Trade Fairs are an excellent opportunity to directly reach out to a competent audience and engage with them about rotary vane technology and the functionality and economic advantages of the range of Mattei compressors.Visitors to the Mattei stand can further their understanding thanks to the broad representation of Mattei staff who are on-hand to share their technical know-how and commercial expertise. For Mattei, Hannover Messe has always been an institutional event on the calendar. This year we will be present again with many new innovations and the theme of the show will be energy-saving.These events also allow us to strengthen our brand awareness, particularly in sectors where our technology has been well received. Take the case of public transit: in May we will be in Montreal for the 2017 UITP Global Summit; an important global meeting-point for the rail and road public transport sectors. Another interesting opportunity for Mattei is the Automotive sector, underlined by the success of the recent exhibition presence at the NADA show in the USA. But we don’t stop there; in the following months we will be at Automopromotec in Bologna and at the AMR Auto Maintenance & Repair Expo in Beijing, along with the local Mattei branch in Suzhou.

GOAL: ENERGY EFFICIENCY

At Hannover Messe, Mattei will be showcasing many new products with one, clear goal: spread the culture of energy saving, an area in which Mattei industrial compressors aim to achieve excellence.

Designing compressors with a high level of energy efficiency has always been a priority at Mattei, and the 2017 edition of Hannover Messe promises to be rich with news on this front.

“Over the past few years, we have concentrated our efforts on producing machines with efficiency levels that are even higher than the levels achieved to date - explains Silvia Barone, Marketing Manager of Mattei - Besides being a company philosophy, it is a commitment that Mattei makes to its customers: to offer solutions that on the one hand allows to respect the environment and the related norms and, on the other hand, to cut company costs. At Hannover, we will be presenting the results of our efforts: products shown in advance as concepts at the latest edition of ComVac, which now are ready to be launched on a large scale”.

A leading player at the Mattei stand will be the 75 kW Maxima Xtreme. “With the Maxima Xtreme, Mattei has outdone itself - comments Eng. Giorgio Fumagalli, Technical Director of Mattei - Thanks to the improvements made in the fluid dynamics performance and to the new oil injection system, the Maxima Xtreme achieves a 7% reduction in terms of specific energy, as compared with the standard Maxima.

The technological advantages of the Maxima Xtreme will be gradually extended to models in other ranges, so as to guarantee energy savings in all the industrial sectors we deal with”.

Another important technological news involves the introduction, on some of the compressor families, of synchronous motors with permanent magnets. The new motors feature an excellent power/weight ratio and high-level reliability. Also, according to the air profile requested, they maximize the energy savings obtainable. At Hannover, this technology will be presented on board of a 110 kW variable speed compressor, on the Optima 110 and on the new Direct Drive Blade 11 i SE, dedicated to the needs of small and medium companies.

In the Blade family, within the 7 to 11 kW power range, Mattei is unveiling a 1:1 direct drive model, in addition to the hugely successful belt driven Blade 7-11 available in today’s production line-up. “Mattei has great faith in direct coupling, because it guarantees great efficiency, reliability and reduces the need for maintenance interventions. It follows that we are using this system on a machine under great demand, like the Blade 11, which has been updated also in its design - affirms Fumagalli - For example, the new dryer module can be easily removed from the machine layout, facilitating maintenance servicing and optimizing energy consumption levels”.

Mattei is not only about energy saving compressors. At Hannover, Mattei will present the 3 kW Mattei Xpander, the Waste Heat Recycling system that uses the heat dispersed during compression to produce electric energy for other purposes. “For this project, we collaborated with qualified partners, also at an academic level.

The engineering of the system was developed in collaboration with the British TP Group, who offers solutions and services with high technological content, also for critical sectors like aerospace”, concludes Fumagalli.

The need to reduce energy consumption in production, has led Scheurich to hand the task over to Mattei Maxima compressors and consumption levels were reduced by almost 50%.

Karl Uhl GmbH in Bochum, with 70 employees and an established world reputation in compressed air, was founded in 1928 and will celebrate 90 years of activity in 2018. Peter Uhl, member of the third family generation to guide the company, has managed to develop it by focusing on the installation, commissioning, customer assistance of both compressors and complete systems for the production of compressed air.

Since 2008, Peter Uhl has established a strong partnership with Mattei, aiming at energy efficiency, and today he is the biggest reseller of Italian Mattei compressors in Germany. Thanks to this strategic choice and to the innovative Mattei rotary vane technology, Karl Uhl GmbH has won over a customer of great value, Scheurich GmbH, a leader in the European market for the production of ceramic vases for indoor and outdoor use, as well as accessories for plants and flowers. Also founded in 1928, Scheurich has its general headquarters in Kleinheubach, on the outskirts of Frankfurt, where it has its main manufacturing center with a daily production of up to 100,000 items, using modern automated systems, including baking ovens and advanced painting booths. In Neukirchen, there is another production plant of the company, specialized in the production of plastic vases.

Scheurich is a first class manufacturing reality, that couples its producing capacity with logistics services of excellence and a company policy earmarked by quality and sustainability. The particular sensitivity towards the environment, which has also been translated into a keen attention to the reduction of energy consumption, has led Scheurich to adopt the Mattei technology since 2015. Three Maxima compressors (with power capacities of 30, 55, and 75 kW) have been purchased to supply the entire production cycle for ceramic flower vases: from the powder paint booths to the vacuum packaging plant.

“At the base of the commercial project shared with Scheurich, there was the company’s need to achieve considerable energy savings, by introducing a new system that supplies compressed air in a highly efficient manner.

It should be noted that Scheurich uses from 6 to 9 million cubic meters of compressed air annually, with peaks of 34 cubic meters per minute at 6.5 bar of pressure, meaning an high demand and availability for air” explains Peter Uhl, Managing Director of Karl Uhl GmbH.

This is why the Mattei technology and its Maxima high-efficiency compressors, particularly suitable for intensive industrial uses, have been chosen. “We have personally experienced the extraordinary efficiency of Mattei compressors and the favorable return on investment, besides the reduced maintenance costs, the compact design footprint and the innovative control system, which contributes to improve both performance and efficiency on the entire system”, explains Jürgen Wambach, Head of Mechanical Division at Scheurich.

Concrete data are available to prove this improvement. “As part of the support program of BAFA (Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control), Mattei compressors’ energetic efficiency was measured and actually cut annual consumption levels by half, passing from 1.022.000 kW/a to 615.000 kW/a” concludes Wambach.

Mattei to showcase its brand new, game changing XT65 rotary vane compressor for automotive applications at two upcoming important global exhibitions.

Mattei will be exhibiting at the next Global Public Transport Summit in Montrèal on the 15th-17th May as a member of the UITP association together with many other world leaders in the urban transport market. “This Exhibition is an important occasion for us to introduce the Mattei brand to the top management of many companies with considerable sales potential, since this sector is based around large supply contracts” states Silvia Barone, Marketing Manager of Mattei.

The range of products that Mattei offers for the transit applications is very wide: other than the RVM compressors, specifically created for this sector needs, Mattei has introduced the APM300 unit (Automotive People Mover) used on automatic people movers and the EV unit (Electric Vehicle) to be mounted on battery-powered vehicles and in particular on the electric buses. “The advantages of the rotary vane technology are crucial for the transit sector and for the new frontier of electric vehicles: our compressors are quiet thanks to the total absence of vibrations, very compact and easy to install. They also have a unique and patented anti-condensation system that prevents oil emulsification” explains Giulio Contaldi, CEO of Mattei.

The exclusive product that we will propose at this Exhibition is the new XT65 compressor, Mattei was chosen as a partner in the European Union Convenient Project, whose aim was to reduce fuel consumption by 30% in the vehicles for long distance freight. As a result of this, Mattei designed and developed a specific compressor for this application, the XT65. “With the new XT65 compressor we have registered a 50% reduction of the energy consumption compared to a traditional piston compressor, with a consequent significant fuel saving. Designed to increase energy efficiency, reliability and MTBS (mean time between service), the XT65 compressor was also designed with automotive costing practices in mind, and is protected by four global patents” says Contaldi.

“At UITP we will present the new XT65 compressor: specifically designed during the European Union Convenient Project. This is a compressor specifically created with the aim to increase reliability and energy efficiency within the transit sector.”

On the 24th-28th May Mattei will then take part to the Autopromotec Exhibition in Bologna, the bi-annual fair for automotive equipment and aftermarket. Mattei will focus on small and medium-size compressors: “They are both reliable and quiet compressor with high quality performances and an excellent value for money ratio. A place of honor will be reserved to the Blade 22 i Plus, with variable speed thanks to the Inverter and with integrated dryer. The direct coupling between the electric motor and the compression unit by means of an elastic element allows for a significant energy saving, as there are no losses due to the presence of gears and belts. This model guarantees optimal operations even at a low speed with a consequent energy saving and lower noise level, improved by the brush-strokes in sound-absorbing material” concludes Contaldi.

ROTARY VANE COMPRESSORS: UNRIVALLED PERFORMANCE OVER TIME

On the long-term, the true cost of a compressor should not be measured in terms of initial capital investment, but in operating costs. It is not by chance that the main compressor manufacturers worldwide are obliged to declare the level of efficiency of their machines and that in certain countries, e.g. the United States, some manufactures are subject to spot-checks by the certified agencies (CAGI), who verify the declared efficiency.

Over 60% of the operating cost of a compressor derives from energy consumption. In Mattei rotary vane compressors, the total absence of thrust bearings limits the wear on components, keeping both energy efficiency and performance high, and most importantly constant, over time.

Thanks to the exclusive rotary vane technology, Mattei compressors are the most efficient, long-lasting and reliable ones on the market today.

Data in hand, over a 5-year life-cycle, a rotary vane compressor produces savings of around 20% in electrical energy, meaning the lowest life-cycle on the market.

In fact, any comparison with screw compressors depends on energy performance trends over time.

A screw compressor has bearings (ball and thrust) with high-tolerance machined seats, permitting the bearings to work with minimum play and resulting in a very precise and small tolerance between the screw rotors, minimizing air leakage and resulting in a high volumetric efficiency. It is a well-known fact that any bearing will wear over time and this inevitably leads to higher tolerances between the rotors and a consequent drop in volumetric performance. This decline in performance results in less air delivery and may vary between manufacturers from anywhere between 5% to 50%. This loss of performance is typically recovered once the screw compressor is overhauled (usually between 35000 and 50000 working hours) inserting new bearings and returning the compressor to the original tolerances and volumetric performances.

Instead, Mattei rotary vane compressors have absolutely no ball or thrust bearings and rely on oil lubricated hydrodynamic bush bearing which are free from wear.

This design advantage allows the compressor performance to be stable and constant thoughout the life of the compressor. A typical Mattei rotary vane can work in excess of 100,000 hours without requiring any components replacements or major overhauls. In addition, not only does the performance of a Mattei Vane compressor not decrease with time, it actually improves over the first 1000 hours of running. In 2016 Mattei has had one of its 55kW compressors independently tested by the internationally renown third party institute Intertek in the USA. During a supervised continuous test, in the first 500 hours, Intertek has certified a 4% improvement in specific energy of the Mattei compressor compared to their own tests at Zero Hours. This proves that, unlike screw compressors whose performance is the best it will ever be at Zero Hours, a rotary vane compressor will undergo a short period of running in which results in a significant improvement of it’s Zero Hours energy efficiency. It has also been proven, by means of in-house testing that the larger the compressor, the larger the potential energetic benefit due to this running in process. A Maxima Xtreme 75kW improved 5% over a similar 500 hour period.

A Mattei compressor is a safe and reliable long-term investment. In fact, along with the energy savings obtained, there is also a consequent economical savings mainly connected with the reduction in maintenance costs.

MAXIMA AND OPTIMA FOR A “RELENTLESS”

PRODUCTION

Founded in 1974, Bossini Mario Srl is a company specialized in hot casting of brass components. Bossini manufactures both solid and bored products, including subsequent machining and processing like shearing, sand blasting and tumbling, to provide maximum customization and great versatility in the applications: from bathroom fixtures to hydraulics, from the thermo-sanitary sector to fittings, all the way to automotive applications.

Mattei compressors are used by the Bossini Mario company, based in Brescia - Lombardy, to supply the compressed air needed for a production characterized by intense and continuous working cycles.

The heart of the activities is concentrated in the province of Brescia, in the Villa Carcina plant, with forty employees.

The main need of the company is to achieve both constant and continuous production while also guaranteeing the quality and efficiency of the industrial processes. This is why the choice was made to install Mattei rotary vane compressors. This was a important investment, as confirms Paolo Bossini, Director of Production at Bossini Mario Srl: “In 2014, we decided to purchase new compressors to better supply the intense production cycles from 6am to 10pm. Compressors are vital for our activity because they allow all the automated system to run freely, from the presses to the shearing machines”.

Installation, operations and management of the compressors is overseen by Servizio Assistenza Turina, who takes care of sales and assistance for Mattei products in the Brescia area. “We recommended installing three Mattei machines capable of working at a specific cycle rate aimed at saving energy. The two main compressors are high-efficiency Maxima 110 models, which alternate on a weekly cycle basis. Instead, the variable speed Optima 132 compressor is always in operation as a backup for the other two machines, automatically modulating operations on the basis of the load profile” affirms Mauro Verardi, owner of Servizio Assistenza Turina.

At a distance of a few years now, the installation of the Mattei compressors has given the expected results, as confirms Paolo Bossini: “Maxima and Optima are very good performers because all the compressed air generated is used to operate our machines, without any dispersion. Besides this fact, the adoption of these compressors has allowed us to achieve real energy savings, as well as providing added reductions in maintenance costs”.

APPOINTMENT IN CHINA

Pelliconi & C. SpA, based in Bologna, has been producing bottle caps made of glass, plastic and aluminum, since 1939. It runs 5 manufacturing centers - 2 of which are in Italy, with the historic location in Ozzano and the largest manufacturing plant in the area nearby Chieti, in addition to others in Egypt, U.S.A. and China. Currently Pelliconi has 500 employees, producing around 30 billion caps per year and exporting them to 110 countries thanks to its 7 sales offices. The 2016 turnover amounted to around 130 million Euros.

Mattei has recently initiated an important partnership in Suzhou with another “Made in Italy” excellence, Pelliconi, a company specialized in the production of bottle caps, which opened a new production site in China in November 2016.

Coincidence has it that Mattei had recently moved it’s Chinese operations from Zhangjiagang to Suzhou and it is in Suzhou that Pelliconi was introduced to the Mattei product line. “Since 2014, Mattei has been present in the Suzhou area and has had a very successful growth, both in turnover and personnel, averaging more than 20% growth in both these aspects - states Francesco Tivegna, Mattei Suzhou General Manager – We are very proud for being able to acquire a prestigious client such as Pelliconi.

Pelliconi offers different models of caps: from the 26 and 29 mm crown corks, both in the traditional pry-off or twist-off versions, to the crown corks in aluminum and plastic. “We proudly export an Italian product all over the world and, with our manufacturing centers we are present in 4 continents. We offer innovative and quality products: the 29 mm crown corks are used for the closure of bottles of champagne in the first fermentation phase, a very exclusive niche. Our Maxi P-26 ring pull cap with a plastic ring is very ergonomic and facilitates the bottles’ opening: we are among the few manufacturers in the world to propose this innovative solution” states Andrea Angotti, Marketing Manager at Pelliconi.

Since November 2016 Pelliconi’s plant in Suzhou has been in operation, too:

“We have consolidated our presence in China, where we previously had only sales offices, thanks to the partnership with Carlsberg, which has partially sustained our investment for the production of our Maxi P-26 ring pull cap, by signing a contract for a multi-year supply. The Chinese economy is both dynamic and in continuous growth. This is why, in a very short period, we are increasing our market share” comments Lorenzo Balì, Director of this plant.

The Chinese Pelliconi plant has been the first to be supplied with Mattei rotary vane compressors and the energy savings achieved are proving this was a correct choice”.

Pelliconi production lines are supplied by two Maxima 75 single-stage compressors, ideal for high demands of compressed air, and by an Optima 60 variable speed compressor. “The machines work 24/24, 7 days a week, handling heavy-duty work cycles efficiently. In particular, while the Maxima compressors operate alternatively, the Optima, thanks to the Inverter, automatically modulates its functioning depending on the air demands” explains Tivegna.

Balì also confirms with satisfaction: “Three reasons convinced us to adopt a new technology for what concerns compressors. First of all, the machines’ high efficiency: the lower energy consumption registered is in line with the Pelliconi corporate values, which has been choosing an innovative and sustainable strategy thus giving us the possibility to respect the strict Chinese environmental regulations. For a technical point of view, Mattei components’ high quality, which does not deteriorate over time, translates in lower maintenance costs, justifying the initial investment. Another important advantage is the presence of Mattei offices nearby: the short distance with the supplier allows for timely interventions and the customer service has proved to be highly qualified”.
