Solid State Ultrasonic Technology Improves Passenger Detection,Reduces Maintenance and Enhances Door System Functionality

The Advantages of Intelligent, Ultrasonic Door ActuationExclusive Vapor CLASS technology provides you with a bus door actuationand passenger detection system that is uniquely intelligent and completelyreliable. Here are the advantages for your vehicles:

• Reduces MaintenanceExpenses – solid-stateCLASS sensors replacemat switches, push buttons, tapes switches, touch barsand light beams

• Reduces Dwell Time – CLASSallows the doors to react directlyto the stream of passengersthereby eliminating excessivetime delays

• Robust Components – designedto resist dirt, humidity, tempera-ture extremes and vandalism

• Minimizes Passenger Contact – safe, inaudible and invisibleultrasonic sensor systemminimize passenger contactwith the doors

• Advanced DetectionSensors – enhance functionof sensitive edges

• Reliable Performance – solid-state signal processing limitsfalse activations

• Diverse Applications – for newvehicles and retrofit installations

A Multi-Function Exit Door SolutionThe Vapor CLASS system consists of three ultrasonic sensors and a signal-processing module. Whenactivated, CLASS sensors emit bursts of ultrasonic pulses that survey specific spaces within the door-way. The signal-processing module instantly analyzes the echoes received by the sensors to determinewhether or not an object (person, parcel or obstruction) is present. When an object is detected, thesignal processing module signals the door controls and initiates the appropriate door function.

The CLASS system can be programmed to provide differentfunctions during each phase of the bus door operation.

• Touch to Open – the CLASSsystem functions as a touchbar or touch tape for passen-ger actuation when a door isenabled but still closed

• Hold Open – functioninglike a treadle mat, the CLASSsystem detects a stream ofexiting passengers and holdsthe door open, reducingdwell time

• Contact-Less Sensing – panel sensors enhance thefunction of sensitive edges. As the doors close, the CLASSsystem enables passengersto exit without contactingthe doors

• Proximity Sensing – whilethe bus is in motion, theCLASS system detectspassengers standing too

close to, or leaning against, the exit doors and activatesa warning light, an alarm or avoice announcement system

CLASS® Detection Zone and Actuation OperationHere is an example of Vapor CLASS detection zones and actuation operation on a bus exit door.Other CLASS zone configurations may be used to optimize performance with specific vehiclesand/or operating practices.

Illustration A: the bus hasstopped and the driver hasenabled the exit door. Inresponse to the door enablesignal, the CLASS signal-pro-cessing module has activatedthe two door-mounted sensors, which monitor two detectionzones. These zones functionsimilar to a touch bar or touchtape and extend, approximately, from 12” (30 cm) below thedoor header to 43” (110 cm)below the door header. Whenan exiting passenger placestheir hand within eitherdetection zone, CLASS sensorsdetect that action and signalthe door to open.

Illustrations B and C: when aposition sensor on the dooractuator indicates the doors arefully open, the signal-process-ing module automaticallychanges the detection zoneconfiguration. The door-mount-ed sensor zones extend almostto floor level and the header-mounted center sensor is acti-vated. In this mode, the CLASSsystem is now monitoring theentire exit door area. The center sensor maintains thedoor in the open position foran exiting passenger stream, while the door-mountedsensors enhance the functionof the sensitive edge seals

with an expanded detectionzone. This mode is maintaineduntil the doors begin to close.

As the doors begin to close, thelower end of the center sensorzone is raised to exclude thearea immediately above the floor.

When the doors are nearlyclosed, and the door remainsenabled, the detection zonereturns as shown in illustration A.

Ideal for Low and HighFloor ApplicationsThe Vapor CLASS system isapplicable for both low andhigh floor transit vehicles andto all common door geome-tries. The CLASS system canbe installed on new vehiclesduring manufacture andretrofitted on many existingvehicles. Consult with yourVapor representative to reviewyour applications and determinethe appropriate configurationand functionality.

The CLASS Difference

ProgrammableDetection ZonesUnlike passenger detectionsystems based on infraredor visible light, the CLASSsystem can monitor differentspaces during various phasesof the door operating cycle. This is a significant advantagethat also facilitates thedetection regardless of lightlevels, ambient temperature, moisture and humidity.

Digital Voice MessagingThe optional CLASS Voice Annunciatorprovides brief, digitally recorded audio messages, such as warnings, greetingsor service announcements, for passengersin the exit door area. Activated in responseto inputs from the CLASS controller, a setof standard messages in English andSpanish are available and may be expandedto include additional messages and languages.

This compact and rugged unit is easily installed in the doorheader space, or adjacent to the doorway, and is applicable toboth new vehicles and as a retrofit to existing CLASS III systems.
