Function and system design

Measuring Principle

The Radar Tank Gauge is a "downward-looking"measuring system, operating based on the time-of-flight method. It measures the distance from thereference point (process connection) to the productsurface. Radar impulses are emitted by an antenna,

reflected off the product surface and received again bythe radar system.

Antenna Selection

It is essential for each and every application andinstallation to evaluate the right antenna type. Theantenna selection depends on the following criteria:

• Type of application (i.e. free space vs. stilling well)

• Installation possibilities (size, location and height of nozzle)

• Properties of the product stored in the tank (radarreflectivity, vapor pressure, temperature, etc.)

• Accuracy requirementsThe 7200 Series Radar Tank Gauge comes with 5 basicantenna forms.

Horn antenna

The 7230 with horn antenna issuitable for free space applicationsthat disallow the use of a parabolicantenna due to tank/nozzlegeometry. It is essential that thehorn extends below the nozzle. The general rule for diameterselection is "the larger, the better,"

as a larger aperture of the antennagenerates a narrower beam andhas a better gain – signal to noise (S/N) ratio.

Rod antenna

The 7231 with rod antenna is usedfor measurements where onlysmall diameter nozzles areavailable and tanks containingcondensing products (or heavywater condensation) or corrosiveproducts, such as sulphur, as therod is easy to clean and has good"drip-off" properties. The

"inactive" length of the antennashould extend below the nozzle.

Small horn & wave guide antenna

The 7240 with the small (1½") hornantenna is ideally suited for smallvessels. Additionally, it providesan accuracy of ±3 mm. The WaveGuide version provides an idealsolution for horizontal cylindricaltanks.

Process antennas

The 7244 and 7245 combines the advantages of thehorn antenna with high chemical resistance while beingeasy to clean.

Tank Gauging System

The Varec 4590 Tank Side Monitorprovides integrated communica-tions for sites with multiple tanks, each with one or more sensors onthe tank, such as radar, spot oraverage temperature, capacitiveprobe for water detection and/orpressure sensors. Multiple proto-cols out of the Tank Side Monitorguarantee connectivity to nearly any of the existingindustry standard tank gauging protocols. Optionalconnectivity of analog 4...20 mA sensors, digital I/Oand analog output simplify full tank sensor integration.

Use of the proven concept of the intrinsically safe HARTbus (HART multidrop) for all on-tank sensors yieldsextremely low wiring costs, while at the same timeproviding maximum safety, reliability and data availa-bility.

Installation Guidelines

Configuration

The 7200 Radar Tank Gauge is commissioned byentering an empty distance E (=zero) and a full distanceF (=span) that correspond with 4mA and 20mA currentoutput.

A linearization table (max. 32 points) which can beconfigured locally or remotely provides engineeringunits and a linear output signal for spheres, horizontalcylindrical tanks and vessels with conical outlet.

On-site operation and configuration is performedusing:

• The built in display and operating module VU331

• A Personal Computer, service adaptor (FXA193) and"ToF Tool - FieldTool Package" operating software.

Remote operation and configuration can be performedusing:

• A Personal Computer, Commubox FXA191/195 and

"ToF Tool - FieldTool Package" operating software.

Measuring Range

The usable measuring range depends on the size of theantenna, the reflectivity of the medium, the mountinglocation and eventual interference reflections.

The maximum configurable range is:

• 20 m (65 ft) for 7200 Series Radar Tank GaugesFMR23x/24x (larger ranges up to 35 m (114 ft) onrequest),

• 70 m (229 ft) for 7200 Series Radar Tank GaugesFMR250 (further informations see TI390F/00/en).

The following tables describe the groups of media aswell as the achievable measuring range as a function of application and media group. If the dielectric constantof a medium is unknown, it is recommended to assumemedia group B to ensure a reliable measurement.

Radar Tank Gauge

Measuring Conditions

Note!

• In case of  boiling surfaces, bubbling or tendency forfoaming, use 7230 or 7231. Depending on itsconsistence, foam can either absorb microwaves orreflect them off the foam surface. Measurement ispossible under certain conditions.

• In case of heavy steam development or condensate the max. measuring range of 7240 may decreasedepending on density, temperature and compositionof the steam → use 7230 or 7231.

• For the measurement of absorbing gases such asammonia or some fluorocarbons* please use 7230in a stilling well.

• *Affected compounds are e.g. R134a, R227, Dymel152a.

• The measuring range begins, where the beam hitsthe tank bottom. Particularly with dish bottoms orconical outlets the level cannot be detected belowthis point.

• For Wave Guide antennas, the end of the pipe is thebegin of the measuring range.

• In case of media with a low dielectric constant(groups A and B), the tank bottom can be visiblethrough the medium at low levels (low height C).Reduced accuracy has to be expected in this range. If this is not acceptable, we recommend positioningthe zero point at a distance C above the tank bottom

in these applications.• In principle it is possible to measure up to the tip of

the antenna with 7230/231/240. However, due toconsiderations regarding corrosion and build-up,the end of the measuring range should not bechosen any closer than A to the tip of the antenna.

• For 7244/245, the end of measuring range shouldnot be chosen closer than A to the tip of the antenna, especially if there is development of condensate.

• The smallest possible measuring range B dependson the antenna version.

The tank diameter should be greater than D, the tankheight at least H.

• Measuring conditions, tank installation & gauge orientation

Radar Tank Gauge

Tank Installations

Avoid any installations (1), like limit switches, temperature sensors, etc., inside the signal beam (seeBeam angle on Page 22).

Symmetrical installations (2), i.e. vacuum rings, heatingcoils, baffles, etc., can also interfere with themeasurement.

Optimization options• Antenna size: the bigger the antenna, the smaller

the beam angle, the less interference echoes.

• Mapping: the measurement can be optimized bymeans of electronic suppression of interferenceechoes.

• Antenna alignment: refer to "optimum mountingposition"

• Stilling well: a stilling well respectively a Wave Guideantenna can always be used to avoid interference.

• Metallic screens (3) mounted at a slope spread theradar signals and can, therefore, reduce interferenceechoes.

Gauge orientation

• Recommended distance (1) wall – outer edge of nozzle: ~1/6 of tank diameter. Nevertheless thedevice should not be installed closer than 30 cm/12“(7230/231) resp. 15 cm/6“ (7240/244/245) to thetankwall.

• Not in the centre (3), interference can cause signalloss.

• Not above the fill stream (4).

It is recommended to use a weather protection cover (2)in order to protect the transmitter from direct sun or

rain. Assembly and disassembly is simply done bymeans of a tension clamp.

Mounting in a stilling well

• The stilling well should be constructed from metal(no enamel coating, plastic on request) with aconstant diameter.

• Diameter of stilling well not larger than antennadiameter.

• Any rectangular increase of the pipe diameter has tobe avoided.

• Welding seam as smooth as possible and on thesame axis as the slots.

• Slots offset 180° (not 90°).

• Slot width respectively diameter of holes max. 1/10of pipe diameter, de-burred. Length and number donot have any influence on the measurement.

• At any transition (e.g. when using a ball valve ormending pipe segments), no gap may be createdexceeding 1 mm (0.04").

• The stilling well must be smooth on the inside(average roughness Rz ≤ 6.3 μm). Use extruded orparallel welded stainless steel pipe. An extension of the pipe is possible with welded flanges or pipe

sleeves. Flange and pipe have to be properly alignedat the inside.

• Do not weld through the pipe wall. The inside of thestilling well must remain smooth. In case of unintentional welding through the pipe, the weldseam and any unevenness on the inside need to becarefully removed and smoothed. Otherwise, stronginterference echoes will be generated and material

build-up will be promoted.• Slot width respectively diameter of holes max. 1/10

of pipe diameter, de-burred. Length and number donot have any influence on the measurement.

• Select horn antenna as big as possible. Forintermediate sizes (i.e. 180 mm) select next largerantenna and adapt it mechanically (7230/7240only).

• Particularly on smaller nominal widths it needs to beobserved that flanges are welded to the pipe suchthat they allow for a correct orientation (markeraligned toward slots).

Recommendations for the bypass pipeMetal (no plastic or enamel coating)

Constant diameter

Select horn antenna as big as possible. For intermediatesizes (i.e. 95 mm) select next larger antenna and adaptit mechanically (7230/7240 only).

At any transition (i.e. when using a ball valve ormending pipe segments), no gap may be createdexceeding 1 mm (0.04").

In the area of the tank connections (~ ±20 cm / 8“) areduced accuracy of the measurement has to beexpected.

Note! Please refer to the sepcific instrument’s Installation &Operation Manual for complete installation instructions

Special Installations

Measurement through plastic tank walls

It is also possible to measure the contents of a tank byinstalling the gauge on the outside of the tank andmeasuring through the wallof the tank.

Measurement in plastic tanks

If the outer wall of the tank is made of a non-conductivematerial (e.g. Plastic or GRP), microwaves can also bereflected off objects outside the tank (e.g. metallicpipes, ladders, grates, etc.). Therefore, these objectsshould be considered as interfering installations if theyare within the signal beam.

Enamelled antenna

Do not hit or chip the enamelled antenna as the coatingmay be damaged and effect the measurement accuracy.

Antenna extensions

• An antenna extension needs to be selected to allowthe antenna to extend below the nozzle - See FAR10

Accessory

• If the antenna has to be mounted on a sloping orvertical vessel wall, an extension with a 45°respectively 90° bend is available. The smallestpossible radius R for the bend is 300 mm (12”).

Installation with heat insulation

The 7200 RTG can be installed on a tank with heatinsulation.

Please contact Varec for further information about allspecial installations.

Effect of gas phase

High pressures reduce the propagation velocity of themeasuring signals in the gas/vapor above the fluid. Thiseffect depends on the gas/vapor and is particularlylarge for low temperatures. This results in a measuringerror that gets bigger as the distance increases betweenthe device zero point (flange) and product surface. Thefollowing table illustrates this measured error for a fewtypical gases/vapors (with regard to the distance; apositive value means that too large a distance is beingmeasured):

Note! When the pressure is known and constant, this

measured error can, for example, be compensated bymeans of linearization.

Radar Tank Gauge

Operation

Operation Concept

The display of the process value and the configurationof the Radar Tank Gauge occur locally by means of alarge 4-line alphanumeric display with plain textinformation. The guided menu system with integratedhelp texts ensures a quick and safe commissioning.

Display and operation can occur in one out of sixlanguages (English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, andSpanish). During the first start-up, the instrumentexplicitly asks for the desired unit / language.

Remote commissioning, including documentation of the measuring point and in-depth analysis functions, issupported via the ToF Tool, the graphical operatingsoftware for Varec instruments.

Access to the electronics can be prevented by means of a custody locking switch that locks the device settings. The custody locking switch can be sealed for custodytransfer applications.

On-site Operation

The LC-Display VU331 (Four lines with 20 characterseach.) allows configuration via 3 keys directly at theinstrument. It can be removed to ease operation bysimply pressing the snap-fit. It is connected to thedevice by means of a 500 mm cable.

All device functions can be set through a menu system. The menu consists of function groups and functions.Within a function, application parameters can be read oradjusted. The user is guided through a completeconfiguration procedure.

LC-Display VU331

To access the display, it is possible to open the cover of the electronics compartment even in an explosionhazardous area.

Remote Operation

The ToF Tool is a graphical operation software forinstruments from Varec that operate based on the time-of-flight principle. It is used to support commissioning, securing of data, signal analysis, and documentation of the instruments. It is compatible with the following

operating systems: Win95, Win98, WinNT4.0, Win2000and Windows XP.

The ToF Tool supports the following functions:

• Online configuration of transmitters

• Signal analysis via envelope curve

• Loading and saving of instrument data (Upload/Download))

• Documentation of measuring point

Note! More information on the ToF Tool can be found on theCD-ROM which is supplied with the instrument.

Menu-guided commissioning:

Signal analysis via envelope curve:

• Connection options:

• HART with Commubox FXA191/195

• Service-interface with adapter FXA193 (RS232C) orFXA291 and ToF Adapter FXA291 (USB)

Software Reliability

The software used in the radar instrument 7500 SeriesRadar Tank Gauge fulfills the requirements of OIMLR85. This particularly includes:

• cyclical test of data consistency

• non-volatile memory

• segmented data storage

The radar instrument 7500 Series Radar Tank Gaugecontinuously monitor the compliance with accuracyrequirements for custody transfer measurementsaccording to OIML R85. If the accuracy cannot bemaintained, a specific alarm is generated on the localdisplay and via the digital communication.

Linearization

The linearization function of the 7500 Series RadarTank Gauge allows the conversion of the measuredvalue into any unit of length or volume. Linearizationtables for calculating the volume in cylindrical tanks arepre-programmed. Other tables of up to 32 value pairscan be entered manually or semi-automatically.

Maintenance

Spare Parts and Maintenance Kits

The 7200 series RTG is designed and manufactured toprovide accurate and reliable operation without anintensive maintenance schedule.

Varec can provide spare parts, preventive maintenanceadvice, training and warranties. Please consult yourInstallation and maintenance manual or arepresentative for more details.

Cleaning the Antenna

The antenna can get contaminated, depending on theapplication. The emission and reception of microwavescan thus eventually be hindered. The degree of contamination leading to an error depends on themedium and the reflectivity, mainly determined by thedielectric constant εr. If the medium tends to causecontamination and deposits, cleaning on a regular basisis recommended. Care has to be taken not to damagethe antenna in the process of a mechanical or hose-

down cleaning. The material compatibility has to beconsidered if cleaning agents are used! The maximumpermitted temperature at the flange should not beexceeded
