New 17° angled VARIO abutments are ideally suited for occlusal screw-
retained single or multiple unit restorations where implants have been
placed with pronounced angulation to the planned prosthetics. The abut-
ments made from CP Titanium, are available with two different rotational
orientations of the cone with respect to the hexagon to allow optimal
alignment of the abutment. The prefabricated gold alloy screw seat ensures
a precise connection between the finished crown or bridge and abutment.
Advantages at a glance
· Axial angulation of up to 17° can be managed
· Two abutment versions for an exact alignment
· Prefabricated gold alloy screw seat for optimal precision
· Can be combined with existing VARIO abutments for
bridge

Indications
Thommen SPI®VARIO angled abutments are intended to be used in con-
junction with SPI® System dental implants in the maxillary and/or mandibular
arch to provide support for crowns or bridges.
Contraindications, warnings, and precautions for use with the SPI® Dental
Implant System are included in the SPI® dental implant instructions for use.
Note
Angled abutments on small diameter implants are not recommended for
use in the molar region, unless they are splinted to larger diameter implants.

SELECTION abutments
VARIO abutments 17° SELECTION are available for planning purposes.
They include hexagon orientation type A (0°) or B (30°) for trial alignment.
The positioning handle may be inserted into the SELECTION abutment
occlusal screw channel to visualize the orientation of the cone and also
for placing the SELECTION abutments.
The SELECTION abutment shape and height of 7.6 mm above implant
shoulder corresponds to the minimum possible assembled height of a
crown or bridge construction.
Processing instructions for the fabrication of the suprastructure
The VARIO abutment 17° is ideally suited for small bridges having two implants
with minimal divergence and one or two intermediary units. The maximum
angulation between two implants which can be managed is as follows:
PF 3.5 mm 6.0°
PF 4.0 mm 7.0°
PF 4.5 mm 8.5°
PF 5.0 mm 11.0°
For bridge restorations with greater implant divergences, it is recommended
to use the VARIOmulti abutment system.
The prefabricated VARIO screw seat must be used for fabrication of the
superstructure. The plastic burn-out tube may be shortened to the upper
edge of the screw seat.

Place the abutment on the analog and secure it using the appropriate
abutment screw.
Place the VARIO screw seat on the VARIO abutment 17° and secure it
with an occlusal screw.
Shorten the plastic cylinder to allow for maximum intercuspation. Avoid
occlusal contact of the plastic cylinder with the antagonist tooth. Maintain a
minimum construct height of 7.6 mm.
The VARIO abutment 17° must not be modified in any way as this may affect
the precision fit of the screw seat.

Before wax-up, the abutment screw channel must be blocked out with a
suitable material (A) that can be removed without leaving residues. In the
case of single crowns, block out the surface of the screw channel such that
an antirotation element is generated on the inside of the crown.
Wax up a corresponding crown or bridge framework onto the abutment in-
cluding the screw seat using standard procedures. Remove the occlusal
screw in order to remove the wax-up.
Invest and cast the superstructure following the procedures described in
detail in the brochure, VARIO/RETAIN Fo_22d010 or VARIOmulti Fo_22d117.
After casting, devest the framework and clean it carefully by using stand-
ard methods such as ultrasound, water steam, pickling and fi berglass
brush.
The screw (A) seat must not be sandblasted or reworked under any
circumstances as this may affect the precision fi t of the components.
Process and fi nish the construction in additional working steps according
to standard procedures.
We recommend fabrication of a transfer key.
New abutment and occlusal screws must be used for permanent inser-
tion of the restoration in the mouth.
Always follow the recommended torque values of 15 Ncm for abutment
screws PF 3.5 mm, and 25 Ncm for abutment screws PF 4.0–
6.0 mm. The occlusal screw requires a torque value of 15 Ncm.
Sterilization
VARIO angled abutments are provided non-sterile and should be sterilized
by standard gravity autoclave at 134 ºC (274 ºF) for 40 minutes with a
drying time of 20–60 minutes or pre-vacuum autoclave at 134 ºC (274 ºF)
for 18 minutes with a drying time of 20–60 minutes.
