VCAA BULLETIN VCE, VCAL and VET OCTOBER 2010 3

On 8 December 1987 the Principal of McKinnon Secondary College received a letter from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Board (VCAB) requesting that he release a teacher, Mr Imre Hollosy on a 0.5 time fraction to the position of Field of Study Project Officer (Arts) for 1988.

The Principal, Alan Lawrence could not have then imagined his agreement would result in an outstanding twenty-two-year commitment to curriculum innovation in Victoria. Present and former VCAA colleagues and teachers at Imre Hollosy’s recent retirement farewell celebrated that commitment.

The McKinnon Jazz Ensemble fittingly represented McKinnon Secondary College with their teachers Martin West and Megan Papworth. Imre has said that he always found teaching ‘a dynamic and exciting space’. In the 1970s with colleague John Benson, Imre introduced media studies into the curriculum at Maribyrnong High School.

He recalls that he approached teaching from various points of view including that of performance.

‘Such an attitude allowed me, amongst other behaviours, to ask the school cleaner in the early 1970s to buy the afternoon edition of The Herald newspaper for my Year 10 History class, so that I could update them on a conflict in the Middle East at that time.’

‘On other occasions I would have parts of lessons where my sole authoritative contribution was the word ‘Why’ in response to any answers that my students proposed as we were ‘studying’ a topic. Some students by the way found that approach very frustrating – for others it established a connectivity that was unimagined.’

Imre recalled that one Year 11 class in their end-of-year farewell card wrote ‘just do not cut off Mr Hollosy’s hands otherwise he will not be able to teach’.

This close relationship with his students may well explain why curriculum content and organisation became such a focus of intense interest for him over his career.

At his farewell, Imre noted that key questions dominated his work in curriculum development: What does it mean to write good curriculum? How do we recognise it?

‘Answers to these matters have changed over the past two decades and these questions are certainly at the forefront of the current national Australian Curriculum development.’

Imre acknowledged the importance of engaging with the broader community in deciding what the next generation should know, and be skilled in, at different stages of their learning.

CeO’s columnHe also recognised the importance of valuing and

supporting teachers; of ensuring that their professional expertise is recognised and protected within state-developed curriculum frameworks and assessment accountability.

Imre paid tribute to the many teachers, tertiary and industry representatives and others with whom he had worked.

‘Their generosity was immense – they were eager to make things happen and to improve whatever we had before us. Together, we built a quality arts curriculum that has served the Victorian community well.’

Imre contributed to some sweeping curriculum reforms – the Victorian Certificate of Education, the National Curriculum of the 1990s, the Victorian P–10 curricula.

He recalled the many hours spent in school offices, in homes, on the phone (often late at night) talking with writers, chairpersons, teachers.

There was also the exhilaration of a draft curriculum document being well received, a VCE examination being considered appropriate by teacher colleagues, a dynamic and provocative VCE curriculum review panel meeting.

Over the last three years at the VCAA, Imre was P–12 and later Group Manager in the Curriculum Division. This role allowed him to have a one-to-one relationship with curriculum managers and support staff. In this role, he skilfully recognised the independence and expertise of curriculum managers while acting as a source of advice and a well of corporate history.

At his farewell , I m r e n o t e d w i t h pleasure that the VCAA was taking Victorian curriculum forward and that ‘renewal is in progress’.

I sincerely thank Imre Hollosy for his significant contribution over 22 years to that progress and wish him well on behalf of the Victorian education community for the next phase of his life.

examination feedback surveyThe VCAA is making an online survey of examination feedback available throughout November to all teachers of Units 3 and 4 VCE studies and scored VCE VET programs in Victoria. The survey will give teachers the opportunity to provide feedback on the end-of-year written VCE examinations. A link to the survey will be provided to schools in a Notice to Schools to be circulated in late October. The survey will also be accessible through the homepage of the VCAA website. All Units 3 and 4 teachers are encouraged to complete this survey, which will take approximately 10–15 minutes. Results will be used to provide feedback to examination setting panels and the VCAA. A summary of the responses will be provided to schools in Term 1 2011.

VCe Review and implementation

Review of VCe studies 2010Consultation

The drafts of the proposed VCE study designs for Accounting, Design and Technology, English Language, Industry

and Enterprise, International Politics (International Studies and National Politics), Media, Outdoor and Environmental Studies, Visual Communication and Design and Sociology were made available for consultation with teachers and other key stakeholders between July and September this year.

The consultation period has now ended. The VCAA would like to thank everyone who responded to the consultation drafts, including those teachers who attended focus groups. Over 200 responses were received through the online questionnaire and focus groups.

All feedback has been forwarded to the VCE Review Panels for consideration before final drafts of the study designs are prepared for consideration by the VCAA Board.

VCe Visual Communication and Design – extension to accreditationVCE Visual Communication and Design has been in a minor review in 2010. However, the consultation process conducted during July and August revealed the need to undertake more substantial redevelopment of the study. A major review will commence in 2011. Consequently, the accreditation period for the existing Visual Communication and Design study design has been extended to 31 December 2012.

VCe ACHieVeR

VCAA BULLETIN VCE, VCAL and VET OCTOBER 2010 11

The VCE Achiever Award is coordinated by the VCAA to recognise the efforts of VCE students in promoting community involvement in their local school and wider community. VCE Achievers actively participate in such activities as the arts, environmental protection, aged care, hospitality, local council initiatives, fundraising and public speaking. Finalists receive a three-month subscription to the Herald Sun, and in November one overall winner will receive a notepad computer donated by Lenovo Australia. Students in government, Catholic and independent schools may apply for the award in 2010 by using the application form on the VCAA website (Excellence and Awards > VCE Achiever Award).

VCe Achiever

Michael Fitzgibbon - Highview Christian Community College

Michael Fitzgibbon, a student at Highview Christian Community College, is described by a local community leader as ‘one of those people who is always first to put their hand up to help’.

It is this willingness to devote his time to help others that won Michael the Central Goldfield Shire Youth of the Year award. He won this award for his work with local community groups like the Lions Club. Among his many voluntary efforts he has helped to rebuild farm fences destroyed in the Black Saturday bushfire, raise $1300 for an East Timorese village and provide the elderly with Christmas lunch and companionship.

Michael played a key role in the success of the Maryborough Relay for Life event, which raised $62 000 for the Cancer Council. As entertainment coordinator he organised the stage for the event, acted as compere and devised games and activities for the kids. He used his people skills to work with others on the committee and inspired his peers to participate.

‘I like to encourage other young people to be actively involved in the community and the community really came out to support this cause. Raising this much money for such a small town was a tremendous achievement.’

Despite coming from a small town, Michael has been able to make opportunities for himself by being reliable and available. ‘I never like to knock back something if I’ve got the time to help and I do fill up my time pretty well.’

As the youngest member of 23 participants in the Lodden Murray Leadership Program, Michael takes part in regular workshops across the region to enhance his skills and knowledge. The program encompasses eleven local government areas across central and north-west Victoria and aims to develop effective community leaders for vibrant and sustainable communities.

Michael was selected as the representative for Maryborough because of his commitment to making a difference. Some of the key skills he has learnt on the program include teamwork, public speaking and how to network.

At school Michael is a Deputy Captain and is part of the Year 12 leadership team who act as a liaison between the principal and student cohort. In his leadership role Michael also runs school assemblies and provides support to Year 7 students on camps and as a mentor.

Michael’s immediate plan after VCE is to move to the coast to live and work. ‘I’m still undecided about what I want to do but I’m sure something will come along. Everything usually falls into place.’

new venue for top Acts 2011Due to the closure of Hamer Hall for renovations Top Acts will be relocated to the Palais Theatre next year and will take place on Friday 13 May 2011.

The Palais has a long history, opening in 1914 and having various incarnations as the ‘Palais de Danse’ and Palais Pictures. Walter Burley Griffin worked on extensions for the building but a fire engulfed the stage just before completion in early 1926 bringing work to a halt. The large, ornate theatre of today, the biggest in Australia, owes its final design to architect Henry E White.

The performers in Top Acts 2011 will be part of The Palais’ continuing history. Musicals, spectaculars and ballet companies including the Bolshoi, the Kirov and The Royal Ballet with Margot Fonteyn have played there. Many rock groups including the Rolling Stones, and numerous Melbourne Film Festivals have also attracted capacity audiences.

Since new management took over three years ago significant improvements and upgrades to the technical facilities and audience services have been made.

Details on public transport to the venue, bus parking and ticket prices will be on the VCAA website in December.

Top Acts performers will be chosen from the twelve Top Class concerts at the Melbourne Recital Centre at Southbank on the following dates: Music Performance – Solo and Group: Saturday 19 February; Sound: Tuesday 1 March; Dance and VET Dance: Friday 11 March; Drama and Theatre Studies: Friday 1 April and Saturday 2 April. Bookings will open for Top Class on 1 December.

A Notice to Schools will be sent with further information about both events in November.

Further information and regular updates about all Season events will be posted on the Season webpages:
