Letter 10 : NEW YEAR IN TOKYO

From Tokyo I wish you and your family a New Year 2009 filled withHappiness and Success. PEACE AND GOOD HEALTH.

Since the Meiji period, Japanese people celebrate only the “solar newyear”, that is our Western new year. On the opposite, the Vietnamesecelebrate both, the solar new year and the lunar new year. 2009 is theYear of Buffalo, and it is the year of 4888 in Vietnamese calendar. Thisyear, the Vietnamese new-year falls on the twenty sixth of January2009. The celebration of Vietnamese New Year lasts three days, and it iscalled the “TET” festivity. During the TET no one would talk about bad

fortune or doing business; everyone should show generosity andkindness.

I safely arrived in Tokyo on December 16 and will stay for a month. Thisis my fifth visit to Japan but it is the first time I come in winter. When Iarrived it was raining all day. It was raining desperately. You know,when it rains on Tokyo you can expect having it for weeks! So you haveno choice, stay home and get deprived or get out and get wet. I thought,

we were not born on earth to stay home, better buy an umbrella and …go J .

After days of rains finally the blue sky is back. From my place, outsideof Tokyo, one can see the famous Mont Fuji covered with snow; it’sreally beautiful and impressive. Mont Fuji shows me the quiet force andthe deep patience of Japanese people at a time Japan is experiencingserious recession and high international competition. My coming talk at

Shibuya in Tokyo, planned on January 11, will surely be inspired by theview of this Mont Fuji which I perceive as a symbol of Purity and HighExpectation. But for now, I am preparing to go to Okinawa, the famous

island situated half way between Taiwan and Tokyo. I will be back inTokyo for the New Year.

Japan is a fascinating country and Tokyo is a wonderful city with somany beautiful places to visit, old temples to admire, fabulousrestaurants to taste all kind of delicious plates. The city is covered withthousands complicate lines of metro and trains to help visitors ingetting… lost when going from one place to another J . One afternoon,after so many changes of metro connections, I successfully found myway to the World Trade Center. This modern place is directly connected

, by Daimon Avenue -the avenue of Grand Gate- to a large and very oldtemple, the Zojo temple. A Starbucks Coffee set just next to the ancientGate seems willing to emphasize the contrast. On the New Year thereare so many people come to visit temples and shrines. All the time, inmany temples monks recite loudly Buddhist sutras while beating drums,

bells, and gongs. I easily recognized the Heart Sutra (Bat-Nha inVietnamese) they recite among others.

In Tokyo during the New Year Eve and three following days, there aremillions of people who come visit temples and shrines and attendceremonies. Knowing that Noriaki and I went out early afternoon insearch for this exceptional atmosphere. We both were excited because

Noriaki is a professor newly established in Tokyo and this would be alsofor him a first hand experience. We went to the most important shrine inKamakura. From town to the place we walked a long road which wasdecorated with thousands beautiful Japanese traditional lamps hang in

the air. Surprisingly, when we arrived at this impressive shrine we didnot see much people, but dozens of food stands were set all around. Theysold tea, beer and “sake”, and all kind of very tempting Japanesetraditional foods. We enjoyed enormously tasting many things. I thought,good foods make life worth living J . Then we left this place a smalltrain to go to another place, a big temple in Enoshima.This is a very large temple which dominates the top of a mount at thecenter of this small island. A long bridge relays the town of Enoshima to

the island. Vehemently we walked up to the famous temple . When wereached the top of this mount it was almost ten o’clock in the evening.

Surprisingly, we did not see much people nor any apparent preparationfor a New Year celebration. A bit tired but we thought if we continuethe road by following these old buildings we must be soon on the wayout. Wrong! We in fact came to a dead end, a small beach! We now sotired physically and also mentally thinking to the long way, up anddown, we have to take for going back to town. The sky has been gettingreally dark and the wind blew forcefully from the sea. It was very cold.The more we walked the more we felt hungry, and tired. Desertednarrow streets seemed endless to us. Shops were closed, the way back islong. We reached the entrance of the island like a defeated armyreaching the gate of their castle. We were really hungry and happilythere was a small restaurant still open. When we finished eating

suddenly a group of joyful young people invaded the quiet restaurantordering beer and food. A few minutes later, through the windows of therestaurant we saw a small army of police officers walking up towards thetemple. Then a moment after a sea of people came up from the town tothe temple. We now realized that we had been coming too early to thetemple. People arrived only at midnight and after. So we had to decide toleave or to go back to the temple. It was not an easy choice…

LETTRE 10 : NOUVEL AN A TOKYO

Depuis Tokyo je souhaite a vous et votre famille une Nouvelle Annee 2009 rempliede bonheur et de succes. PAIX et BONNE SANTE.

Depuis la periode MEIJI, le peuple japonais celebre seulement le « nouvel ansolaire », c.a.d. notre nouvel an europeen. A l’oppose, les Vietnamiens celebrent a lafois le Nouvel An Solaire et le Nouvel An Lunaire. 2009 est l’Annee du Buffle, etc’est l’annee 4888 du calendrier vietnamien. Cette celebration du Nouvel AnVietnamien dure 3 jours, on l’appelle les festivites du « TET ». Pendant le TET

personne ne parle de malchance ou d’affaires. Tout le monde doit montrer de lagenerosite et de l’amabilite.

Je suis arrive sain et sauf a Tokyo le 16 decembre et resterai pour un mois. Ceci estma 5è visite au Japon mais ma premiere venue en hiver. A mon arrivee il a plu toutela journee, desesperement. Vous savez, quand il pleut sur Tokyo, ca peut durer dessemaines ! Ainsi vous n’avez pas le choix, restez chez vous deprime ou sortez etdetrempe. Dans mon idee, nous ne sommes pas nes sur Terre pour rester a la maison,achetez plutot un parapluie et… partez( !).

Apres des jours de pluie, finalement le ciel bleu est de retour. D’où je suis, en dehorsde Tokyo, on peut voir le fameux Mont Fuji couvert de neige ; c’est vraiment beau etimpressionnant. Le Mont Fuji me montre la force tranquille et la profonde patiencedu peuple japonais a un moment ou le Japon connaît une recession serieuse et uneforte competition internationale. Ma prochaine conference a Shibuya dans Tokyo,

prevue pour le 11 janvier, sera certainement inspiree par la vue de ce Mont Fuji que je percois comme un symbole de Purete et de Grande Attente. Mais pour l’instant, jeme prepare a aller a Okinawa, la fameuse ile situee a mi-chemin entre Taiwan et

Tokyo. Je serai de retour a Tokyo pour le Nouvel An.

Le Japon est un pays fascinant et Tokyo est une ville merveilleuse avec tant de beauxendroits a visiter, de vieux temples a admirer, de fabuleux restaurants ou goutertoutes sortes de plats delicieux. La ville est quadrillee de milliers de lignescompliquees de metro et de trains pour aider les visiteurs…a se perdre en allant d’unendroit a un autre( !). Un apres-midi, apres beaucoup de changements de metro, j’aireussi a trouver mon chemin jusqu’au World Trade Center. Cet endroit moderne estdirectement relie, via Daimon Avenue-l’avenue de la Grande Porte- a un tres ancien

temple, le Temple Zojo. Un Starbucks Coffee installe juste a cote de l’Ancienne Portesemble vouloir souligner le contraste. Au Nouvel An, tant de gens viennent rendrevisite aux temples et monasteres. Tout le temps dans beaucoup de ces endroits des

moines recitent a haute voix des sutra bouddhistes tout en battant des tambours, descloches et des gongs. Je reconnus facilement le Sutra du Cœur (Bat Nha envietnamien) parmi d’autres sutra recites.

A Tokyo, la veille du Nouvel An et durant 3 jours apres, des millions de gensviennent aux temples et monasteres pour assister aux ceremonies. Sachant cela, Noriaki et moi sommes sortis tot dans l’apres-midi pour chercher cette atmosphereexceptionnelle. Nous etions excites tous deux car Noriaki est un professeurnouvellement nomme a Tokyo et c’etait une nouvelle experience pour lui aussi. Nousallions au plus important monastere de Kamakura. Depuis la ville jusqu'à cet endroit,nous marchions sur une longue route decoree de milliers de belles lanternes

japonaises traditionnelles accrochees en l’air. Etonnamment, en arrivant a cetimpressionnant monastere, nous n’avons pas vu beaucoup de gens, mais desdouzaines de stands d’alimentation installes tout autour, vendant du the, de la biere etdu « sake », et toutes sortes d’aliments traditionnels japonais fort tentants. Nousavons beaucoup apprecie de gouter a bien des choses.J’ai pense que la bonnenourriture fait que la vie vaut d’etre vecue( !). Puis nous primes un train pour aller aun autre endroit, un grand temple a Enoshima.C’est un tres grand temple qui domine le sommet d’un mont au centre de cette petiteile. Un long pont relie la ville d’Enoshima a l’ile. Nous grimpions avec ardeur vers lefameux temple. En arrivant au sommet du mont, il etait presque 10 heures dusoir.Surprise, nous ne vimes pas beaucoup de gens ou de preparation apparente pourdes ceremonies de Nouvel An. Un peu fatigues, nous pensions qu’en suivant la route

le long de ces vieux batiments nous serions bientôt vers la sortie. Faux ! En fait nousallions vers un cul-de-sac, une petite plage ! Si fatigues physiquement etmentallement, nous pensions au long chemin, montant et descendant, a prendre pourrentrer en ville. Le ciel etait devenu rellement noir et le vent soufflait avec forcedepuis la mer. Il faisait tres froid. Plus nous marchions, plus nous sentions la faim etla fatigue. Les petites rues etroites et desertes nous semblaient sans fin. Les boutiquesetaient fermees, le chemin de retour etait si long. Nous atteignions l’entree de l’ilecomme une armee defaite atteint la porte de son château. Nous avions vraiment faim,et etions heureux de decouvrir un petit restaurant encore ouvert. Nous finissions de

manger, lorsque soudain un groupe de jeunes gens joyeux envahit ce restauranttranquille, commandant de la biere et de la nourriture. Quelques minutes plus tard,nous vimes au travers des fenetres du restaurant, une petite armee d’officiers de

police en marche vers le temple. Puis un moment plus tard, une maree de gensdebarquait de la ville vers le temple. Nous nous rendions compte maintenant quenous etions arrives trop tot au temple. Les gens ne viennent qu’a minuit et apres.Ainsi nous devions decider de partir ou de revenir au temple. Choix delicat…

Lettera No. 10: CAPODANNO A TOKYO

Da Tokyo auguro a Voi e alle Vostre famiglie un Nuovo Anno 2009 pieno di felicità e successo. PACE E UNA BUONA SALUTE.

Fin dall’epoca Meiji, il popolo giapponese celebra solo il “Nuovo Annosolare”, che corrisponde al Nuovo Anno occidentale. I Vietnamiticelebrano, invece, sia il Nuovo Anno solare che il Nuovo Anno lunare. Il2009 è l’anno del Bufalo e corrisponde all’anno 4888 del calendariovietnamita. Quest’anno il Capodanno vietnamita cade il 26 gennaio2009. La celebrazione per l’arrivo del Nuovo Anno vietnamita dura tregiorni ed è chiamata “TET”. Durante questa festività nessuno dovrebbe

parlare di sfortuna o di affari, tutti dovrebbero, invece, mostrare

generosità e gentilezza.

Sono arrivato a Tokyo il 16 dicembre e vi rimarrò per un mese. Questa èla mia quinta visita in Giappone, ma è la prima volta che vengo durantela stagione invernale. Quando sono arrivato pioveva ed è piovutoviolentemente tutto il giorno. Sapete, quando piove a Tokyo poteteaspettarvi che continui per delle settimane senza interruzione! Quindinon avete altra scelta: stare a casa e privarvi di uscire, oppure uscire e

bagnarvi. Io penso che non siamo venuti su questa terra per stare a casa,meglio comprare un ombrello e ……andare J .

Dopo giorni di pioggia, finalmente è tornato il sereno. Dalla miaabitazione situata fuori Tokyo, si può ammirare il famoso Monte Fujiricoperto di neve: è veramente meraviglioso ed imponente. Il Monte Fujimi mostra la quieta forza e la profonda pazienza del popolo giapponesein questo momento in cui il Giappone sta attraversando un periodo di

grave recessione e di forte concorrenza internazionale. Il mio prossimodiscorso a Shibuya, Tokyo, programmato per il giorno 11 gennaio, saràsicuramente ispirato dalla vista del Monte Fuji, che per me è il simbolo

della purezza e delle elevate aspettative. Al momento però, sonoimpegnato con i preparativi per recarmi a Okinawa, la famosa isolasituata a metà fra Tokyo e Taiwan. Sarò di ritorno a Tokyo per ilCapodanno.

Il Giappone è una terra affascinante e Tokyo è una città meravigliosa,con tanti bellissimi luoghi da visitare, vecchi tempi da ammirare,favolosi ristoranti dove poter degustare tanti tipi di piatti deliziosi. Lacittà è attraversata da mille linee complicatissime di metropolitane e ditreni, che aiutano il turista a……perdersi, quando vuole spostarsi da unangolo all’altro della città J . Un pomeriggio, dopo aver cambiato cosìtante metropolitane, sono riuscito, con grande successo, a trovare la

strada per il World Trade Center. Questo centro così moderno è collegatotramite la Daimon Avenue – la via del Grande Cancello – direttamenteall’antichissimo tempio Zojo. Un caffè della catena Starbucks proprioall’angolo dell’antico tempio sembra avere tutta l’intenzione dienfatizzare il contrasto. Durante il Capodanno molte persone visitanotempli e altari. In molti templi i monaci recitano continuamente a vocealta i sutra buddisti, mentre suonano tamburi, campane e gongs.Facilmente sono riuscito a riconoscere il sutra del Cuore (Bat-Nha in

vietnamita), che viene recitato insieme ad altri.

A Tokyo, durante il Capodanno e i tre giorni seguenti, ci sono milioni di persone che visitano i templi e gli altari e partecipano alle cerimonie.Sapendo ciò, insieme a Noriaki, sono uscito nel primo pomeriggio allaricerca di questa atmosfera eccezionale. Entrambi siamo stati moltoeccitati perché Noriaki è un professore che si è appena trasferito a Tokyoe, anche per lui, si è trattato della prima esperienza. Siamo andati a

visitare il più importante tempio di Kamakura. Dalla città, perraggiungere il luogo, abbiamo camminato lungo una strada decorata concentinaia di bellissime lampade giapponesi appese in aria. Ma quandosiamo arrivati in questo posto così imponente, con nostra grandesorpresa, non abbiamo visto molte persone, ma solo dozzine di chioschiche vendono tè, birra, “sake” e numerosi tipi di cibo tradizionalegiapponese, tutto molto invitante. Con enorme piacere abbiamoassaggiato diverse specialità. Io penso che il buon cibo renda la vita così

piacevole, che vale veramente la pena di essere vissuta J . Poi abbiamo preso il treno per recarci in un altro luogo, un grande tempio a Enoshima.

Questo è un tempio enorme, che domina la cima di un monte al centro diquesta piccola isola. Un lungo punto collega la città all’isola diEnoshima. Con impeto abbiamo raggiunto il famoso tempio. Quandosiamo arrivati sulla cima del monte erano già le 10.00 di sera. Con nostragrande sorpresa, non abbiamo visto tante persone, né notato particolari

preparativi per la celebrazione del Capodanno. Già un po’ stanchi,abbiamo pensato che, continuando a percorrere la strada seguendo gliantichi edifici, avremmo potuto presto trovare una via di uscita.Sbagliato! Infatti siamo arrivati ad un punto morto, cioè ad una piccolaspiaggia! A quel punto eravamo già molto stanchi, sia fisicamente chementalmente, soprattutto pensando al lungo percorso per tornare in città.Il cielo è diventato scuro e il vento ha cominciato a soffiare con grande

forza dal mare. È diventato molto freddo e noi, nel cammino di ritorno,sempre più stanchi e affamati. Le strette strade deserte ci sono sembrateinfinite, i negozi chiusi, la via del ritorno è stata davvero lunga. Abbiamofinalmente raggiunto l’entrata dell’isola come un esercito sconfitto cheraggiunga il portone del suo castello. Affamatissimi, abbiamo notato, pernostra fortuna, un ristorante ancora aperto. All’improvviso, appena finitodi mangiare, un gruppo di allegri giovani ha invaso il quieto ristorante,ordinando birra e cibo. Qualche minuto dopo, attraverso le finestre del

ristorante, abbiamo visto un piccolo esercito di ufficiali di poliziacamminare verso il tempio. Poi, un momento dopo, un mare di persone,che dalla città si recava al tempio sulla cima del monte. Abbiamo quindicapito di essere arrivati troppo presto: la gente ha raggiunto il luogo soloa mezzanotte. A quel punto abbiamo dovuto prendere una decisioneimportante: andar via oppure tornare al tempio, ma non è stata unadecisione facile……

cheio de Alegria e Sucesso. PAZ E BOA SAÚDE.Desde o período Meiji, o povo japonês celebra apenas o “ano novosolar”, isto é, o nosso ano novo do Ocidente. Pelo contrário, osvietnamitas celebram ambos, o ano novo solar e o ano novo lunar. 2009é o ano do Búfalo, e é o ano de 4888 do calendário vietnamita. Este ano,o ano novo vietnamita calha em 26 de Janeiro de 2009. As celebraçõesdo ano novo vietnamita duram 3 dias e são chamadas de festividade“TET”. Durante o TET ninguém deve falar de azar ou de negócios, todos

devem mostrar generosidade e bondade.Cheguei a Tóquio em segurança em 16 de Dezembro e vou ficar por 1mês. Esta é a minha quinta visita ao Japão mas é a primeira vez quevenho no Inverno. Quando cheguei chovia o dia todo. Choviadesesperadamente. Sabem, quando chove em Tóquio podem esperar quechova durante semanas! Então não têm alternativa, ficam em casa semnada que fazer ou saem de casa e ficam molhados. Eu pensei, nós nãonascemos nesta Terra para ficarmos em casa, é melhor comprar um

guarda-chuva e … sair J .Depois de dias de chuva finalmente regressou o azul no céu. De ondeestou, fora de Tóquio, pode-se ver o famoso Monte Fuji coberto de neve.É realmente bonito e impressionante. O Monte Fuji mostra-me a calmaforça e a paciência profunda do povo japonês num período em que oJapão enfrenta uma recessão séria e alta competição internacional. Aminha palestra em Shibuya em Tóquio, prevista para 11 de Janeiro, serácertamente inspirada por esta vista deste Monte Fuji que eu entendo

como símbolo de Pureza e Altas Expectativas. Mas por agora, estou a preparar-me para ir a Okinawa, a famosa ilha situada a meio caminho

entre Taiwan e Tóquio. Regressarei a Tóquio para o Ano Novo.

O Japão é um país fascinante e Tóquio é uma cidade maravilhosa, comtantos lugares para visitar, templos antigos para admirar, restaurantesfabulosos para provar todos os tipos de pratos deliciosos. A cidade écoberta por uma rede de linhas de metro e comboios para ajudar osvisitantes a… perderem-se quando viajam de um sítio para o outro J .Uma tarde, após muitas mudanças de linha no metro, consegui encontraro caminho para o World Trade Center. Este lugar moderno é ligadodirectamente pela Avenida Daimon – a avenida do Grande Portão – a umgrande e muito antigo templo, o templo Zojo. Um café Starbucks mesmo

perto do antigo Portão parece querer enfatizar o contraste. No Ano Novo

muita gente vem visitar os templos e santuários. Em muitos templos osmonges recitam durante todo o tempo sutras Budistas em alto tom,enquanto batem em tambores, sinos e gongos. Reconheci facilmente oSutra Coração (Bat-Nha em Vietnamita) que recitaram entre outros.Em Tóquio durante a véspera de Ano Novo e os três dias seguintes,milhões de pessoas vêm visitar os templos e santuários e vão àscerimónias. Sabendo disso, Noriaki e eu saímos ao início da tarde à

procura desta excepcional atmosfera. Estávamos ambos entusiasmados

porque Noriaki é um professor recentemente estabelecido em Tóquio eesta seria também para ele uma experiência em primeira mão. Fomos aosantuário mais importante em Kamakura.

Da cidade até esse lugar caminhámos por uma longa estrada decoradacom milhares de lanternas tradicionais japonesas penduradas pelo ar.Surpreendentemente, quando chegámos a este santuário impressionante,não encontrámos muita gente, mas dezenas de bancas de comida estavam

prontas em volta. Vendiam chá, cerveja e “saké”, e todo o tipo das muitotentadoras comidas tradicionais japonesas. Gostámos muito de provarmuitas coisas. Eu pensei, a boa comida faz a vida valer a pena J . Depois

partimos deste sítio, num pequeno comboio, para ir para outro local, umgrande templo em Enoshima. Este é um templo muito grande quedomina o topo de um monte no centro de uma pequena ilha. Uma longa

ponte liga a cidade de Enoshima à ilha. Veementemente subimos até aofamoso templo.

Quando chegámos ao topo do monte eram quase dez da noite.

Surpreendentemente, não encontrámos muita gente nem nenhuma preparação aparente para a celebração do Ano Novo. Um poucocansados, mas pensámos se continuássemos o caminho seguindo osedifícios antigos deveríamos em breve encontrar a saída. Errado! Narealidade chegámos a um lugar sem saída, uma pequena praia!Estávamos fisicamente cansados e também mentalmente, ao pensar nolongo caminho, aos altos e baixos, que tínhamos a percorrer até à cidade.O céu estava a ficar mesmo escuro e o vento soprava com força vindo domar. Estava muito frio.

Quanto mais caminhávamos com mais fome e cansaço ficávamos.Estreitas ruas desertas pareciam-nos sem fim. As lojas estavam fechadas,

o caminho de regresso é longo. Alcançámos a entrada da ilha como umexército derrotado alcança o portão do seu castelo. Estávamos mesmoesfomeados e felizmente havia um pequeno restaurante que ainda estavaaberto. Quando acabámos de comer um grupo de jovens alegres invadiude repente o calmo restaurante, pedindo cerveja e comida.

Uns minutos depois, pelas janelas do restaurante vimos um pequenogrupo de polícias a subir em direcção ao templo. E logo a seguir um mar

de gente veio da cidade para o templo. Apercebemo-nos agora quetínhamos vindo demasiado cedo para o templo. As pessoas chegaram sóà meia-noite ou depois. Então tínhamos que decidir partir ou regressar aotemplo.
