This is a black ‘Indian Kali’, a type of limestone, with a dense riven surface. They originally intended to point the joints using sand and cement, with three days allowed for two men to do this. However, Director Phil Trick was concerned about the potential problems of cement staining and also about shrinkage and cracking in the longer term – particularly in the seemingly endless wet weather conditions, with the consequent difficulty of ensuring standing water was removed from the joints before pointing. After researching this problem he identified GftK 850 Paving Joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape, as the ideal solution. This non-staining mortar allowed the jointing work to be completed very much faster – in less than half a day. The work was also able to proceed uninterrupted and precisely when scheduled, as the material can be applied and it hardens correctly, even in the pouring rain. PJT Maintenance has recently completed these patios and pathways at a private residence in Hazel Grove, which involved more than 135m2 of natural stone paving.
