So is winter really over? We thought that in our last issue and how wrong we were!
May & June is a really busy time for local events and so many were washed out last year that we really are due some decent weather. Highlights include the Daventry Motorcycle Festival on 18th May and Crick Boat Show 25-27 May. That’s not to mention the host of community and charity events that so many people give up their time to organise. Remember you can check out local events from jumble sales to concerts, from exhibitions to sponsored runs at www.villageemporium.co.uk/events
Throughout the summer you can get inspiration from other people’s gardens by visiting an open garden under the NGS scheme. There you will find a host of local experts who can help you transform your ideas into reality in “Your garden” section. Of course, there’s advice from our very own Armchair Gardener too! You will notice that in this issue we have moved the various sections around. This helps to keep our magazine fresh and is in response to reader feedback. You may even find a new supplier tucked away somewhere you have not looked before.
Best wishes Alison & Clare

On May 30th 2013, at least 100 cyclists will be making their way down to Blackheath Common in London over 3 days, covering approximately 200 miles.
On the 4th day the main Help for Heroes Bike Ride will be arriving from Paris into Blackheath Common, where we will then be cycling as a whole unit for the last 10 miles through the streets of London to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph before reaching Horse Guards Parade.
Team ‘Wheelie Tyred’ will make up 5 of those riders. The team consists of Paul Isherwood, Ian Hancock, Steve Hancock, Keith Hancock and Dave Thackray - with a youthful average age of 48.
A general overview...Fundraising Help for HeroesCycling 200 miles over 3 daysTamworth to the London CenotaphAverage age of our team - 48 yrs!
Training is hard and we need to keep putting in the miles. Cycling up to and over 70 miles per day for over 3 days is not going to be easy for any of our team. None of us are seasoned cyclists. However, everything is relative and the discomfort we will experience is nothing compared to the various challenges faced on a daily basis by the Heroes we’re raising money for.
Your generosity will drive us through our task ahead. More importantly, your donations will be appreciated by those who need it the most. The real Heroes.
Donating through the website is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give – so every donation goes further – and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent you will boost your donation. Donate at www.bmycharity.com/Pedal4HeroesWheelieTyred

Business & IT
It is a platform that has been instrumental in the success of both businesses that I have built. I have a personal Facebook pro le, which I stay connected with friends, family and business acquaintances, but I also have several business pages. I enjoy developing these pages and watching them grow. They have tremendous business potential. If you don’t already have a business page, you should. Once you have it set up, there are several things you can do to maximize your results:
3 Things You Should Do Every Day with Your Facebook Business Page
1. PostEvery day we have the opportunity to use Facebook to market ourselves, our business, and our pages. Take advantage of this. Every post is a little commercial for your business, so post regularly. If you don’t, your page will be “Out of sight, out of mind”...Facebook posts are best when short and powerful. Post pictures, links, articles relating to your business, or any interesting events or activity your business is involved in...2. EngageWhen people comment on my pages, I respond. How? I answer any question they ask, thank them for popping in, or at a minimum, click like on their comment. I want them to engage in further conversation. None of us likes to be ignored, so respond to those that took the time, and keep the conversation going...3. AnalyseOne of Facebook’s neat features is Facebook Insights. This feature allows you to track the results of your page, as well as the results of every post you make. Use Insights to learn what type of posts your fans enjoy, comment on, and engage in... This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you are interested in learning more about Social Media then why not come along to a 2hr workshop on 21st May to nd out more. What a year for Rugby Fitted Kitchens! Hot on the heels of their move to a spacious new showroom, they have won the 2013 Kitchen Bedroom and Bathroom Review “Customer Service of the Year” award.
“This award couldn’t have come at a better time, this is our 20th anniversary year and after relocating to our superb new showroom last July it’s fantastic to see all the hard work of the RFK team has been recognised. I am particularly proud to win the award because we have been nominated by our peers as you can’t enter yourself in this category,” said Managing Director, Trevor Scott. The awards, now in their 19th year, are considered the most prestigious across the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom industry and to be nominated is considered an achievement in itself.
With over 60% of customers coming through personal recommendation, it’s no surprise that Trevor and the team have won the award and have been nominated for local awards too. This superb customer service has fuelled the growth of the business and lead to its relocation from Railway Terrace to a 4,500 square foot showroom in Cottage Leap, Rugby.
The RFK serviceRFK offers a complete fitted kitchen service, from planning through to installation. Whether customers
want to simply change their work surfaces and doors or invest in a bespoke, in-frame, hand built kitchen, the attention to detail and high level of service remains the same. Using the latest technology, the designer will plan a kitchen to the client’s exact specification – which means that changes can be easily incorporated whenever the client wants to make changes. The design process is truly collaborative! The team will then liaise with other contractors to ensure a fast, efficient and hassle-free installation.
The showroomThe showroom displays a range of classic and contemporary kitchen furniture and appliances from leading British and European Manufacturers such as Siemens and Neff. Neff has recognised the success of RFK by making it a Five Star Master Partner – a significant endorsement within the industry. With a wide range of work surfaces, flooring and lighting solutions, RFK believes it has the best choice available for anyone considering updating and remodelling their kitchen.
So if you are thinking about updating your kitchen, why not visit them at Unit 7, Cottage Leap Rugby, CV21 3XP. Alternatively take a virtual walk around their showroom online at www.rugbyfittedkitchens.co.uk or call for more information on 01788 547647.

extensive range of fabrics including:
Loft Insulation We all know that heat rises, so if your loft isn’t adequately insulated your home could lose as much as a quarter of its heat through the roof. This is why loft insulation is so important.
There are four types to choose from. Mineral wool matting is sold in rolls and is laid between the joists, with a second layer placed at right angles to cover the joists. Rigid insulation boards can be laid in lofts used for storage. Laid on top of mineral wool, wooden boarding is then fitted on top of the insulation boards. Alternatively, floor boarding pre-bonded with insulation board is available.
If your loft space is irregular use loose-fill insulation. Sold in bags, this is poured between the joists to the right depth.
Finally loose, fire-retardant insulation material should be blown into loft areas that are hard to access. A professional should be hired for this job which takes no more than a few hours. In all other cases if you are experienced at DIY you should be able to fit the loft insulation yourself, but wear a protective mask and gloves if handling mineral wool. To get a list of possible installers go to the National Insulation Association website or call your local Energy Saving Trust advice centre free on 0800 512012.

I think we’ll all agree that the first part of 2013 has been a total washout. Or, should we say, a complete ‘snow-out’. Yet British Summer Time has arrived and with it comes the hope that the sun will start shining and we’ll finally get into double figures.
There is, for the more cynical of us, the temptation to escape England and search for warmer climes, but holidaying at home has its benefits. No passport required, no vaccinations, no waiting around in airport departure lounges, no jetlag... and you don’t have to travel for hours to enjoy a tranquil peace of paradise!
For a quintessentially British holiday, a ‘voyage’ along the Grand Union or Oxford canals is a must. Forget traffic jams and rushing around at a hundred miles an hour; the speed limit is 4mph and it can take a full day to get from one pub to the next! A canal holiday is truly a unique experience, allowing you to leave the pressures of everyday life behind and slow down as you leisurely travel from town to town.
With enough time you can easily reach Stratford, Birmingham or further afield. You could even take a circular route to visit as many cities, towns and villages as you can. But the real appeal of hiring a boat is that you can travel just a couple of miles a day and still have an amazing holiday. Puttering down
the canal, taking in the local countryside, navigating locks and tunnels… they can all work up a thirst!
Luckily, we have a wealth of towns and villages with great pubs, restaurants, cafés and tea rooms either directly on the towpath or only a few minutes’ walk from the Grand Union or Oxford canals... you can literally step off the boat and walk into the beer garden!
And for those of you who are used to the lap of luxury, you no longer have to ‘rough it’! Most modern canal boats come with running water, sanitation facilities, heating and televisions!
So the next time you automatically think of an overseas holiday, stop for a moment and consider a slower pace of life...
Union Canal Carriers Ltd in Braunston offers weekly narrow boat hire, as well as a day boat for as little as £115. Call 01788 891950 to find out more.

Colour Find out what colour the bridesmaids dresses are and try to choose an outfit in a complimentary colour. Most believe that the mother of the bride or groom should not wear white or ivory, these being the bride’s perogative. Many also frown on black seeing it as a mourning colour and red, believing it to be too bold. The colour should of course flatter your skin tone.
StyleChoose a style that flatters and is also comfortable. Most wedding celebrations are now lengthy affairs, so you will not want to wear something that feels too constricting, or that you are constantly fiddling with. If an off the peg outfit does not fit perfectly, consider getting it altered. Think about the weather, so that you can choose an outfit in a
fabric of the correct weight. Avoid materials that crease easily as this will look unsightly on photographs. Outfits that include jackets can give the impression of two outfits once the jacket is removed. Whilst it is certainly true that outfits for mothers have become more fashionable recently, most still feel that an elegant and sophisticated look is appropriate.
Many mothers go shopping for their outfit with the bride; this can be an enjoyable occasion and ensure that choices meet with approval. It may also be wise to discuss outfits with the mother of your future daughter or son in law to avoid the embarrassment of wearing something similar.
HatsOne of the traditional ways for mothers to mark the importance of their child’s wedding is to wear a hat. Suggestions to aid your selection include:
a) Always take your outfit when going to the hat shop or milliner, to ensure that the overall image looks stunning.
b) Tall ladies can wear almost any style, including statement pieces.
c) An upturned brim is a flattering shape for shorter ladies as this will elongate the figure,
d) If wearing a fascinator, wash your hair the day before and do not use conditioner. This will make the hair less silky and improve the grip of the fascinator.
Other accessories such as shoes, handbags and jewellery should also be chosen carefully. You may want to choose your shoes and bag in co-ordinating colours rather than the exact shade of your outfit, to break up the effect. You should also decide how you will place a corsage on your outfit, or whether it may be preferable to opt for flowers on your handbag or wrist.
For a mother, a child’s wedding is a momentous occasion, a day that you will certainly want to look your best. Here are some aspects to consider when choosing your outfit

Think of music lessons and you may be hit with the nightmarish prospect of being woken up every weekend to your young child shaking the house to its foundations as they learn a new drum routine. Or, in our family’s case, my hopelessly uncoordinated little brother attempting to play Three Blind Mice on his violin every evening, which in my honest opinion, sounded more like three dying mice. However, the initial pain you may endure as your child gets to grips with their chosen instrument is more than worth it if they develop a real love for music.
If your child is moving up to senior school this September, they will probably have access to a music department, but lessons are limited and with approximately 30 students in each class, they won’t be able to get the one-to-one attention they need to thrive. In order for them to get the best possible opportunity to really learn, there are a number of experienced and dedicated private music tutors in the local area, who teach both children and adults how to play a range of instruments, including drums, flute, guitar, piano and violin.
It may also surprise you to learn that in addition to learning the skill of playing a musical instrument, professional tuition provides children with a range of other important developmental benefits that will carry them through their future lives. Studies suggest that music lessons can build self-esteem, improve teamwork skills and discipline, and even enhance intelligence and academic achievement. Recent research has also shown that musical training in childhood helps develop the brain areas involved in language and reasoning. Just a few years of tuition as a child can actually improve the way the brain processes sound in adulthood, which leads to better listening and learning skills, as well as an enhanced sensitivity to emotion in speech.
So whether your child wants to play in an orchestra or a band, ignore the initial horror as they learn the basics... it could benefit them more than you’ll ever know.

Freshen upThere’s no better excuse than a barbecue to spruce up your outdoor areas. Invest in some new garden furniture, or if that’s not in the budget, brighten up what you do have with new cushion covers - the more summery, the better. Covey Garden Centre, Chapel Brampton have some great new furniture and accessories. On the day of your barbecue, why not hang up some bunting or fairy lights to add some party atmosphere to your space?Sitting round a fire is the perfect way to wind up your barbeque. Fire baskets and fire pits are a great, safe way to have a fire. And don’t forget the rugs, blankets and marshmallows.
Marinade serenadeA marinade will not only give your meat loads of flavour, but will also tenderise it. We recommend the honey and mustard one opposite, ideal for chicken and pork. For steaks, chopping up some fresh rosemary and adding black pepper, olive oil, crushed garlic and a sprinkle of paprika is all you need to do.
Scent-sationalWhy not light the barbecue before your guests arrive and throw on some rosemary or bay leaves? The resulting aroma will create a lovely welcoming touch. Want the best barbecue taste ever? Take a
tip from the professionals and throw some flavoured woodchips on your coals.
Choose from flavours such as Apple, Hickory and Whiskey Oak.
Meat in the middleThere’s an art to cooking meat – take
it slowly. Most barbecues fail because the meat is put on too soon. Wait till your
coals are smoldering red or you’ll end up with burgers that are charred on the outside and
raw in the middle. Once your meat is on the grill, don’t move it around too much or turn it over too often. And once it’s done, don’t cut it up too soon. You’ll need to give the juices time to settle.
Table tableMake sure your table is dressed to impress with a bright, summery tablecloth. Oilcloth table cloths look great and are wipe clean. Unusual or brightly

coloured bowls are another great way to draw attention. Look out for terracotta ones that will bring the essence of the Mediterranean to your garden. After all the effort you are going to, don’t be tempted to use paper plates and plastic cutlery. The super-tough plastic wine glasses on the other handare a great idea. The brightly coloured ones not only look great, they are shatterproof.
Drink upDon’t forget about the drinks. Keep your guests refreshed with tasty mocktails as well as the usual alcoholic cocktails. Hands-free glass holders that snap onto plates are a great way of ensuring hands are free to enjoy food and hold drinks. Many a good barbecue has been ruined by dwindling ice stocks so make sure that you have a good supply. Fill a large plastic box or bucket with a couple of packs of ice and water and top up the ice regularly to keep drinks cool all day.
Don’t forget the sidesKeep your meat simple, but impress your guests with side dishes. Our mango and chilli salsa looks great, but is super-easy to prepare.
Insect repellentWho’d have thought we’d be willing the wasps to show up, but with the weather we’ve had, it would be a nice problem to have! If they do show up, keep those pesky pests away with our home-made repellent

are good for the kids.

glowing red with a powdery grey surface - this
means that they are hot enough.

stand for a few minutes, or for up to three hours in the fridge.
TOP TIP: Add a dessert spoon of
jam to an old jam jar. Fill one third full with boiling water and mix. Once cooled, cover the top
with silver foil and secure with an elastic band. Make a small hole in the top with a pencil. The idea is
that the wasps can crawl in but not get out again.

The average Brit knocks back around 33 litres of bottled water per year! The UK bottled water industry is worth over £1.5bn per annum. Most consumers say they drink it because it tastes better and they believe it to be purer than tap water. However, this is not necessarily the case. Though both mineral and spring water are bottled fresh at their underground source, bottled table water may well be nothing more than filtered tap water - and some spring water is treated before bottling.
Water from UK taps is the most stringently tested in the world and is quite possibly safer to drink than bottled water which can easily become contaminated, but the presence of chemicals can make the taste unpalatable. Fitting a filter to the water supply solves this problem. Water filters vary according to the amount and type of contaminants they remove, but a popular choice is an under sink unit which will remove a wide selection of chemicals. Costing anything from £100-£250, cartridges need replacing every six months and cost around £15-25. A cheaper, but less effective alternative is a jug filter priced at around £40.
You might want to consider that tonnes of plastic are used each year in the manufacture of water bottles. So consider fitting a filter, and if you really prefer bottled, remember to recycle.

Eat seasonallyAfter a long drawn out winter the sun has finally arrived, and it’s time to get busy in the garden.
May is one of the busiest months in the kitchen garden. The soil is warm and everything should be growing well. Unfortunately the weeds are growing well too so there is no time to relax. Do watch out for a late frost, many growers have been caught out and lost their recently planted beans etc. Keep that fleece handy just in case.
Watering TipsWater when required. Don’t just sprinkle a few drops on the surface, it probably won’t penetrate and do any good, also light sprinkles encourage shallow roots which makes for weak plants, far better to give a good soaking less frequently that will get to the roots of your crops.
Here come the Pests! From all directions slugs and snails will be creeping along the ground, ( there are various ways to dispose of & discourage slugs inc beer, egg shells & sandpaper ) birds are coming from the skies to eat your crops ( so don’t forget the netting) and butterflies as beautiful as they are will be laying eggs under your brassica leaves turning into caterpillars and in turn devastating your plants!
Here’s a few ideas on what to sow nowSow the following in well prepared seed beds.
May: french & runner beans, beetroot, brassicas , peas, lettuce, radish, spring onions
June: carrots, turnips, swedes, cauliflowers, sweetcorn, cucumber

Ingredients – to serve 2 people2 x 180g coley fillet, skinless 100g fresh white crab meat 200g peeled new potatoes 50g cream 50g butter 150g samphire grass 50g grated cheddar1 egg yolk1 tsp english mustardpinch of salt & peppercayenne pepper & parsley
Take a trip to your local fishmonger and collect yourself some beautiful fresh coley, it is inexpensive and just as good as cod or haddock for this simple but tasty dish.
To make the topping, add the cheese, egg yolk, mustard and crab to a bowl, mix well and add a pinch of salt & pepper, a pinch of cayenne and chopped parsley if you have it.
Place the coley on a buttered oven tray with the topping pressed on the top of the fish and bake in a moderate oven, 180˚C for 15 minutes until golden brown.
Meanwhile boil the potatoes until tender, drain and crush with a fork. Add the butter and cream and season. Steam the samphire for 3 minutes.

“Darling”! Look out, here it comes, another weekend shattering statement about to be delivered.
“You do realise Great aunt Augusta is staying with us over July, you how she loves the long border, will it be at its best?” “Probably not” I quietly mumble to the dog. The only thing our long border has in common with Great Aunt Augusta is their firm historical rooting in the Victorian period.
I decide to spend a little time delaying any action that afternoon by inspecting the ravages of winter. Although as I expected, the shoots of peonies and phlox are already protruding through the soil surface and the poppies and delphiniums divided last autumn are also going well despite the weather.
These first shoots always appear so innocent in April but will soon be stretching their stems and without support will flop over well before they begin to flower.
The Herbaceous collections we see today are largely due to the work of plant hunters travelling to distant shores in pursuit of species not yet seen by polite Victorian society that could become the focal point of private and public gardens.
In 1843 the Scottish plant hunter Robert Fortune set sail for China, in search of new plants and often these adventures were not without danger. An encounter with robbers nearly saw him return empty handed.
“They surrounded me, presenting knives and threatening to stab if I gave the least resistance, at the same time, endeavouring to rob and strip me of anything of value, and my poor
plants collected with so much care were flying about in all directions.” Nothing a good clout with aunt Augusta’s watercolour sketch book wouldn’t cure!
The best herbaceous borders, however spontaneous they might appear are meticulously planned from beginning to end. Choose your plants well and create depth to the border using the plants flowering height to dramatic effect
from front to back. Contrast foliage texture and avoid using bold patches of red that instantly pull the eye
to one spot only, maybe keep red subtle and low in the border, perhaps with one of the Sedums.
Keep grouping informal by planting in odd numbers but don’t be afraid to be bold in quantity where room is sufficient.
The wife says I have a very limited palette range. I say less is more and it helps one to appreciate the qualities of the plants on display rather than create a celebration of
every continent around the world.
I like to stake my border before plant stems get to tall and are vulnerable to damage by
using Pea Sticks. These give a natural finish in tune with the plants and if done well are virtually invisible
when covered with lush green foliage. Finish of with a top dressing of fertiliser and a 4 inch layer of mulch
on wet soil.
“How’s it going out there, Aunties been on the phone, says she’s not coming and is planning a rambling holiday in
China instead.”
“Oh!” I reply “ Maybe next year then.”

village offers a wide range of amenities and services to its residents, including a doctor’s surgery, two dentists, four churches, two schools, a public library, a veterinary surgery, a boarding cattery, a post office, a community centre and Long Buckby Mill Park Nature Reserve. There are three pubs in the village. Local shops include two grocery stores, a butcher’s, several hairdresser’s, a newsagent, card and gift shop, chemist, a hardware store, and a wide range of restaurants and take-aways.
Long Buckby railway station had a brief moment of fame in 1997 when, as the nearest stop to Althorp, it was the final stop on the journey by the Prince of Wales and his two sons during the funeral of the Princess of Wales, and was seen on television screens across the world as they got off the train. Prince Charles and his sons took a different route to Althorp using Brington Road as the rest of the Royal Family and guests drove through the village of Long Buckby leaving the village via East Street to follow the main road to Northampton which Althorp lies on.
In 2007, one of the village shops celebrated its 150th year of operation since it first opened on the High Street in 1858.
Focus on... Long Buckby
Long Buckby has a history going back approximately 1,200 years to the Vikings when all of northern, central and eastern England came under the Danelaw. The mound remaining of a castle built by Sahir de Quincy in the 12th century remains. The village name is of Nordic origin, with ‘by’ meaning settlement or village while ‘Buck’ is derived from ‘Bec’ for stream/brook. The village is recorded in the Domesday Book as Buchebei, the ‘Long’ possibly coming at a later date in reference to the length of the village.
The village once had a thriving shoemaking industry but is now mainly a residential village. The
