The Aryans:-
• The Aryans were semi-nomadic people and originated from area around the Caspian sea in Central Asia
• They entered in India through Khyber pass (Hindu Kusha Hills) and took shelter near sapta-sandhav region
• The seven rivers which are mentioned in Rig Veda are- Vitasta (Jhelum), Asikni (Chenab), Prusni (Ravi),
Vipasha (Beas), Sutudri (Sutlej), Drashdavati (Ghaggar) and Sarasvati
• The holy book of Zoroastrians the ‘Zend Avesta’ indicates the entry of Aryans in to India via Iran.

• आर्य लोग अर्य-घुमंतू लोग थे और मध्य एशिर्ा में कैस्पिर्न सागर के आसपास के के्षत्र से उत्पन्न हुए थे

• The Vedic period can be divided in to two parts

• Vedic Literature:
• The term Veda means “superior knowledge” in Sanskrit.
• Four major Vedas constitute the vedic literature. They are – Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sam Veda, and Atharva Veda.
– Rig Veda – Earliest veda. Has 1028 hymns in praise Gods.
– Yajur Veda – Has details of rules to be followed during sacrifices.
– Sam Veda – Has a collection of songs. The origins of Indian music are traced to it.
– Atharva Veda – has a collection of spells and charms.
• Besides these Vedas, there were Brahmanas, Upnishads, Aryankas, and epics- Ramayana and Mahabharata.
• Brahmanas – Prose about vedic hymns, rituals and philosophies.
• Aryankas – Deal with mysticism, rites and rituals.
• Upnishads – Philosophical texts dealing with soul, mysteries of nature.
• Ramayana was authored by Valmiki.
• Mahabharata was written by Ved Vyasa.
• वैदिक सादित्य:
• वेद िब्द का अथय संसृ्कत में "शे्रष्ठ ज्ञान" ै।
• िार प्रमुख वेद वैशदक साश त्य का शनमायण करते ैं। वे ैं - ऋगे्वद, र्िुर वेद, साम वेद और अथवयवेद।
• ऋगे्वि - प्रािीनतम वेद। देवताओं की सु्तशत में १०२ns भिन ैं।
• यजुर वेि - बशलदान के दौरान पालन शकए िाने वालेशनर्मों का शववरण ै।
• सैम वेि - में गीतों का संग्र ै। भारतीर् संगीत कीउत्पशि इसके बारे में पता लगाती ै।
• अथवववेि - में मंत्र और मंत्रों का संग्र ै।
• इन वेदों के अलावा, ब्राह्मण, उपशनषद, आरं्क, औरम ाकाव्य- रामार्ण और म ाभारत थे।
• ब्राह्मण - वैशदक भिन, अनुष्ठान और दियन के बारे मेंगद्य।
• आयंक - र स्यवाद, संस्कार और कमयकांड सेसंबंशर्त।
• उपदिषि - आत्मा, प्रकृशत के र स्यों से शनपटने वालेदाियशनक गं्रथ।
• वाल्मीशक द्वारा रशित रामार्ण थी।
• म ाभारत को वेद व्यास ने शलखा था।

Rig Vedic Period (1500BC - 1000BC)• In this period the Rig Veda has been compiled that’s why it is known as Rig Vedic Period.
• It is known as the oldest religious text in the World.
• There are 10 Mandalas and 1028 Suktas (Hymns).
• Newest Mandal- 1st and 10th
• Oldest or Vansha or Gotra Mandal- 2 to 7
• Mixed age Mandal- 8th and 9th

• Political Organisation in Vedic Age:• In Early Vedic Age:• ‘Kula‘ was the basic unit of political
organization.• Multiple families together of kinship formed a
‘grama‘.• Leader of ‘grama’ was ‘Gramani‘.• Group of villages were called ‘visu’, headed by
‘vishayapati‘.• The highest political and administrative unit
was ‘jana‘ or tribe.• There were several such tribal kingdoms –
Bharatas, Matsyas, Yadus and Purus.• The head of kingdom was ‘Rajan‘ or king.• The Rig Vedic polity was hereditary monarchy
normally.• There were two bodies- Sabha(council of
elders) and Samiti(general assembly of people).

• Society in Vedic Civilization:• In Early Vedic Age:• The Rig Vedic society was
basically patriarchal.• The basic unit of society was ‘graham’ or
family, its head was called as ‘grahapathi’.• Monogamy was practiced while polygamy
among royal and noble families was observed.
• Women had equal opportunities as men for their spiritual and intellectual development. Apala, Viswavara, Ghosaand Lopamudra were women poets.
• Women could attend the popular assemblies.
• No child marriage, sati practice.• Social divisions were not rigid.

• Economic Conditions in Vedic Civilization:
• In Early Vedic Age:
• The Rig Vedic Aryans were pastoral, cattle rearing people.
• After they permanently settled in North India they began agriculture.
• Carpenters produced chariots and ploughs.
• A variety of articles with copper, bronze and iron were made by workers.
• Spinning was an important occupation –cotton and woolen fabrics.
• Goldsmiths made ornaments.
• The potters made different kinds of vessels for domestic use.
• Trade was conducted by barter system in begining but later shifted to use of gold coins called ‘nishka‘ for large transactions.
• Rivers acted as means of transport.

• ऋग वैशदक आर्य पिुपालक थे, पिुपालन करनेवाले लोग थे।

• सुनारों ने ग ने बनवाए।
• कुम्हार ने घरेलू उपर्ोग के शलए शवशभन्न प्रकार केबतयन बनाए।
• व्यापार भीख मांगने में वसु्त शवशनमर् प्रणाली द्वाराशकर्ा गर्ा था, लेशकन बाद में बडे लेनदेन के शलएby शनश्का ‘नामक सोने के शसक्ों का उपर्ोगकरने के शलए स्थानांतररत कर शदर्ा गर्ा।

• In Early Vedic Age:
• Rig Vedic Aryans worshiped natural forces like earth, fire, wind, rain and thunder by personifying them into many gods.
• Some important Rig Vedic gods –Prithvi (Earth), Agni (Fire), Vayu (Wind), V
aruna (Rain) and Indra (Thunder). And ‘Indra’ was most popular. Next came ‘Agni’ – an intermediary between the gods and the people.
• ‘Varuna’ – the upholder of natural order.
• Female Gods – ‘Aditi’ and ‘Ushas’.
• No temples and no idol worship.
• Prayers were offered to gods for rewards.

अशि (अशि), वारु् (पवन), वरुण (वषाय) और इंद्र
(थंडर)। और 'इंद्र' सबसे लोकशप्रर् था अगला
’अशि’ आर्ा - देवताओं और लोगों के बीि एक
मध्यस्थ।
• ‘वरुण’ - प्राकृशतक व्यवस्था के र्ारक।
• मश ला देवता - 'अशदशत' और 'उषा'।
• न कोई मंशदर और न कोई मूशतय पूिा।
• पुरस्कारों के शलए देवताओं से प्राथयना की गई।

• The Horse played the most significant role in there life.
• Marriage was usually monogamous.
• There was no example of child marriage.
• ‘Amaju’ were un-married women.
• Gayatri mantra which is devoted to Sun (Samvritti) is discribed in 3rd mandal of Rig-
Veda.

Post Vedic Period (1000BC to 600BC)
• Post Vedic Period is the period in which Yajur, Sama, and Atharva, and the
Brahmanas, Aranyakas, and Upnishads etc. were composed.
• The age is also known as ‘PGW Iron phase .’
• The cast system was now not based on their work, but depends upon vansh of his
family.
• वैशदक काल के बाद (1000BC से 600BC)
• वैशदक काल के बाद की अवशर् व काल ै शिसमें र्िुर, साम, और अथवय, और ब्राह्मण,
अरण्यक, और उपशनषद आशद की रिना की गई थी।
• आरु् को 'पीिीडबू्ल्यआर्रन िरण' के रूप में भी िाना िाता ै।
• कास्ट शसस्टम अब उनके काम परआर्ाररत न ी ं था, लेशकन उनके पररवार के वंि पर
शनभयर करता ै।

• In Later Vedic Age:
• Larger kingdoms by amalgamation formed ‘Mahajanapadas or rashtras‘.
• Therefore, the power of king increased and he performed various rituals and sacrifices to make his position strong like Rajasuya (consecration ceremony), Asvamedha (horse sacrifice) and Vajpeya (chariot race).
• The kings assumed titles of Rajavisvajanan, Ahilabhuvanapathi(lord of all earth), Ekrat and Samrat (sole ruler).
• But, importance of the Samiti and the Sabha diminished.

• समामेलन द्वारा बडे राज्यों ने apम ािनपद र्ा राश्ट्र का गठन शकर्ा।
• इसशलए, रािा की िस्पक्त में वृस्पि हुई औरउसने अपनी स्पस्थशत को रािसुइर्ा(अशभषेक समारो ), अश्वमेर् (घोडे कीबशल) और वािपेर् (रथ दौड) की तर मिबूत बनाने के शलए कई अनुष्ठान औरबशलदान शकए।
• रािाओं ने रािाशवज्जन, अश ल्याभुवनपशत(सभी पृथ्वी के स्वामी), एकरत और सम्राट(एकमात्र िासक) की उपाशर् र्ारण की।
• लेशकन, सशमशत और सभा का म त्व कम ो गर्ा।

• In Later Vedic Age:
• The Varna system became prevalent-four divisions of society :Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas and Sudras.
• A Brahmin and Kshatriyas occupied a higher position than others.
• Various sub-castes on the basis of occupation emerged.
• Women were considered inferior and subordinate to men now and also lost their political rights of attending assemblies.
• Child marriages became common.

• वणय व्यवस्था प्रिशलत ो गई- समाि के
िार शवभाग: ब्राह्मण, क्षशत्रर्, वैश्य और

अर्ीन माना िाता था और शवर्ानसभाओं में
भाग लेने के अपने रािनीशतक अशर्कारों
को भी खो शदर्ा।

• Economical condition • In Later Vedic Age:• More land was put under cultivation by clearing
forests. Knowledge of manure saw development.• Hence, Agriculture became the chief occupation
of people growing barley, rice and wheat.• Industrial activity became specialized with metal
work, leather work, carpentry and pottery advancement.
• Internal trade as well as foreign trade also became extensive (they traded with Babylon through sea).
• Hereditary merchants (vaniya) came into existence as a different class.
• Vaisyas indulged in trade and commerce organized themselves into guilds known as ‘ganas‘.
• Coins: Beesides ‘nishka’, ‘satamana’– gold coins and ‘krishnala‘ – silver coins were also used as a media of exchange.
• आशथयक स्पस्थशत
• बाद के वैशदक रु्ग में:
• वनों को साफ करके अशर्क भूशम को खेती केअर्ीन रखा गर्ा। खाद का ज्ञान शवकास देखा।
• इसशलए, कृशष िौ, िावल और गेहं उगाने वाले लोगोंका मुख्य व्यवसार् बन गर्ा।
• र्ातु के काम, िमडे के काम, बढ़ईगीरी और शमट्टीके बतयनों की प्रगशत के साथ औद्योशगक गशतशवशर्शवशिष्ट ो गई।
• आंतररक व्यापार के साथ-साथ शवदेिी व्यापार भीव्यापक ो गर्ा (उन्ोनें समुद्र के माध्यम से बाबुलके साथ व्यापार शकर्ा)।
• वंिानुगत व्यापारी (वाशनर्ा) एक अलग वगय के रूपमें अस्पस्तत्व में आए।
• व्यापार और वाशणज्य में शलप्त वैश्यों ने खुद को as गण ’के रूप में िाना िाता ै।
• शसके्: ‘शनश्का’ के अलावा, ’सतनाम’ सोने केशसके् और r कृष्णला also - िांदी के शसक्ों को भीशवशनमर् के मीशडर्ा के रूप में इसे्तमाल शकर्ा िाताथा।

• Religious condition
• In Later Vedic Age:
• Indra and Agni lost their importance.
• Prajapathi (the creator), Vishnu (the protector) and Rudra (the destroyer) became.
• Sacrifices and the rituals became more elaborate.
• But the importance of prayers declined.
• Priesthood became a hereditary profession. They dictated the rules for these rituals and sacrifices.
• Therefore, by the end of this period there was a strong reaction against this priestly domination (also against elaborate sacrifices and rituals). This led to the rise of Buddhism and Jainism.
• र्ाशमयक स्पस्थशत
• बाद के वैशदक रु्ग में:
• इंद्र और अशि ने अपना म त्व खो शदर्ा।
• प्रिापशत (शनमायता), शवषु्ण (रक्षक) और रुद्र
(शवधं्वसक) बन गए।
• र्ज्ञ और अनुष्ठान अशर्क शवसृ्तत ो गए।
• लेशकन प्राथयनाओं के म त्व में शगरावट आई।
• पुरोश तवाद एक वंिानुगत पेिा बन गर्ा।
उन्ोनें इन अनुष्ठानों और बशलदानों के शनर्मों
को शनर्ायररत शकर्ा।
• इसशलए, इस अवशर् के अंत तक इस पुरोश त
वियस्व (शवसृ्तत बशलदान और अनुष्ठान के
स्पखलाफ) के स्पखलाफ भी कडी प्रशतशिर्ा हुई।
इससे बौि और िैन र्मय का उदर् हुआ।
