Preface ******

This on-line book was prepared to meet the insistent demand of people who wish to practice Brahma Yajna (Sandhyaa – Contemplation of the Divine) and Deva Yajna (Communion and Fumigation Ceremonies for purification purposes). It is hoped that persons who are not acquainted with or versed in the Vedas will also benefit greatly by a study and use of this book. According to the Vedas, man attains bliss by strengthening himself physically, morally and spiritually and for this purpose, the practice of Brahma Yajna and Deva Yajna is essential. These Yajnas demand application of consciousness to the nature and attributes of the Self-Existent Divine Being, Who by means of Mercy i.e. the just application of law regulates the universe. We hope that this book will stimulate greater interest in the pursuit of further studies along these lines. We invite suggestions for the further improvement of this work.

Your will as truly revealed in the Vedas will we obey and preach. We will be truthful in word, deed and thought. You are our shelter. May You protect us who study and contemplate Your Nature – who speak only the truth so that our understanding may be firm in Your will and never turn away from it. Your will is truth and righteousness. That which is contrary to Your will is untruth and unrighteousness. May You again shelter and protect us. O Lord be merciful and grant this our prayer, for which we shall feel ever and ever grateful. Let there be peace in the heavenly regions, in the middle regions and on earth.

VEDIC SANDHYAA

Introduction The Sandhyaa mantras are divided into three categories:

1. ‘Stuti’ or Glorification Mantras 2. ‘Praarthnaa’ or Prayer Mantras 3. ‘Upaasnaa’ or Communion Mantras

‘Brahmayajna’ or Sandhyaa should be performed twice daily just before sunrise and at sunset; that is, at dawn and at dusk. When one is doing Sandhyaa at dawn one should sit facing East and at dusk one should sit facing West. It is essential that one should select a quiet, clean, and well-ventilated place that is free from dust and insects as well as from unpleasant smells. Once such a place is selected it is best to use the same place regularly. The devotee should also bathe or clean himself and wear clean loose-fitting garments. The best posture is the ‘Padmaasan’ or Lotus Posture, but if one cannot comfortably sit in this posture then the ‘Sukhaasan’ or any other comfortable sitting position will do with the head straight, spine erect and chest thrown out. In this position the devotee should get his mind in a prayerful mood and make an effort to empty his mind of all worldly thoughts. He should then think of the eternal attributes of ‘OM’, that is, ‘Sat’ – existence, ‘Chit’ – intelligence and ‘Aanand’ – blisfulness.

- 10 -

Page 11: Vedic Upaasna

With the mind in this mood the devotee should do at least three ‘Praanaayaamas’. One praanaayaama consists of four movements:

1. A slow and deep rhythmatic inhalation 2. A retention of the breath 3. A slow smooth and long exhalation 4. A retention of the breath

During each of these four movements, the devotee should mentally recite the Praanaayaama Mantra: Om Bhooh Om Bhuvah Om Svaahaah Om Mahah Om Janah Om Tapah Om Satyam After these three praanaayaamas, the mind having now become calm, still and peaceful, the devotee should commence reciting the first mantra of the Sandhyaa and go through all the remaining mantras in the same slow, steady, rhythmic breathing while concentrating on the meaning of each mantra. While reciting the second and third mantras, that is, ‘Indriyasparsha’ and ‘Marjan’ mantras, the devotee should concentrate his thoughts on the respective parts of the body as mentioned in each of the two mantras. By doing so, the devotee’s mind will be prevented from wandering and he will eventually be able to meditate on the attributes of the Divine Self and commune with Him as he reaches to the end of the Sandhyaa mantras.

AGNIHOTRA (Havan)

Introduction

The Vedas prescribe five great daily duties as follows: 1. Brahma-yajna …………. Sandhyaa (devotion to the Divine) 2. Deva-yajna ................. Agnihotra or Homa (Havan) 3. Pitri-yajna …………. Service to one’s parents and learned and

righteous persons 4. Atithi-yajna .…………. Service to selfless teachers and guests 5. Bhoot-yajna or ………….. Service and protection to animals, the poor Balivaishvadeva-yajna and the helpless

Every householder is enjoined to perform Havan twice daily, the best times being just after sunrise and just before sunset. The amount of suffering a man inflicts on his fellow-beings by polluting the air and water with the waste products of his system and consequently bringing on diseases becomes the measure of his sin to atone for which it becomes incumbent on him to do Havan and thereby purify the air and water to an extent equal to or greater than the harm he has done. It is recommended that the amount of material used in the fire should not be less than that consumed as food daily in the household. The performance of Havan also assists in promoting rain and plant life. It also helps one to commit Veda mantras to memory. When Havan is performed on special occasions or in congregations, the entire yajna should consist of: a) Eeshvar Praarthnaa (Study and Meditation of the Divine) b) Svasti Vaachan (Benediction) c) Shaanti Prakaran (Peace Chanting) d) Havan (Purification ceremonies with fire)

- 17 -

Page 18: Vedic Upaasna

The fire is kindled in an earthen or metallic vessel (kund) having the shape of an inverted, truncated pyramid having the following dimensions: Depth and each of base – 9” to 12” (top when inverted) Each side of apex – 2 ¼” to 3” (bottom when inverted) That is, each side of the top should be four times each side of the bottom. It is also necessary to provide two small glasses with water, two small spoons, a plate and small dishes for ghee, saamagree etc. The fuel consists of small pieces of wood 3” to 6” long of the following types: sandalwood, camphor, mango, or pitch pine. The ingredients to be burnt (Saamagree) are mainly: gum incense (gugul), sandalwood dust, cardamom (ilaichee), rice, saffron (kesar), hyacinth, Sugandhbala and sugar, all ground together. Mohan-bhog, sweet rice and such substances may also be burnt. Ghee and a cube of camphor and matches must also be provided. It is more beneficial to keep the flame regulated so that maximum fumigation be achieved. Instructions have been provided in the text for water-sipping etc. and application of ghee, fuel, etc. Mantras which are to be recited only on special or congregational occasions have been so indicated.

He who is awake finds something. He who is asleep loses something. Open you eyes from your half-sleep and give some thought to the Supreme Being. The world is not a place entirely for enjoyment The Almighty is awake, it is you who are asleep Whatever is to be done tomorrow, do it today, and whatever is to be done today, do it now. When opportunity is lost why do you repent? O sinner! Where is the satisfaction in your foolish actions? When the knot of sin strangles you why do you hold your head and cry?

Swagat & Introduction (Welcome) Welcome and greetings are extended to the bridegroom, bride, family and friends. Kanya Agaman (Arrival of the Bride) The bridesmaids and the father escort the bride to the Mandap (nuptial canopy). This exchange symbolizes formal acceptance and respect. Prarthna Mantra (Prayer) Chanting of the great Gayatri mantra to invoke the blessings of the supreme Lord. Page 105: Vedic Upaasna

The prime wealth of a Hindu household is the daughter (Kanya), who symbolizes the Hindu Goddess of Wealth (Lakshmi). Bride’s parents will place her hands into Groom’s and pour holy water over them to finalize the gesture of gift giving (transfer of wealth). Bride’s father requests Groom to accept his daughter as an equal partner in all walks of life. It is noted in Vedic scriptures that there is no "Daana" (gift) greater than Kanya Daan (giving a daughters hand in marriage). Groom promises to accept Bride as his equal life partner. Jaya Home (Offerings) Offerings in to sacred tire emphasize the couples’ joint responsibility in maintaining the love and dignity of their union. Paani Graham (Accepting the Hand) The bridegroom holds the hand of the bride and both of them solemnly pledge before God that they have become one and will forever love each other and remain mutually devoted for the remainder of their lives. Pledges (Exchange of vows) The priest reads the solemn union declaration. The bride and bridegroom exchange the holy marriage vows. Groom: I take your hand in mine, for the attainment of prosperity and offspring. May you enjoy long life and happiness with me. By the grace of God and blessings o fall assembled, you have become my life partner and wife. You are my lawful wife and I am your lawful husband. Bride: I take your hand in mine in pursuit of righteousness for the benefit of both our families. I will stand by you. May we be provided with prosperity and offspring and may I keep you splendidly radiant as the rays of the sun. Mangal Phera Bride’s brother puts rice in the hands of Bride & Groom to offer to Agni (the Lord of Fire) who dispels darkness and ignorance while leading into light and knowledge. The couple then walks around the sacred fire. Each round represents the four basic goals of human life: Dharma: Moral sense to lead a good life Artha: Financial prosperity Kama: Blessing for strong, virtuous children and to share the responsibilities of home

- 105 -

Page 106: Vedic Upaasna

Moksha : Self restraint and eternal physical, mental and spiritual strength Together the four goals symbolize the couple's commitment to each other, the community and the cosmos. During the first three rounds Bride leads Groom and during the last round Groom leads. Shila Rohan A rock is placed in the north east comer of the Mandap. While Bride places her right foot on the piece of rock, Groom recites a hymn the Ashma Bhava. The statement is to encourage his wife to be as strong as the rock, to be firm towards any difficulties of life they may face together. Rice and flowers are sprinkled on the couple by her parents, relatives and friends. Saptapadi (Seven steps) The bride and groom take seven steps forward together, symbolizing the beginning of their journey through life. These steps signify the guiding principles of life. Each of these steps represents the vows made by the couple:

1. Together we will love, cherish and respect one another from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness or in health ... forever.

2. Together we will create a home full of joy and laughter, where we find

serenity and strength. 3. Together we will share a steadily deepening love, which grows in

understanding and unselfishness. 4. Together we will embrace each other's family as well as our own yet to

come. 5. Let us have a measure of patience and forgive with grace. 6. Together we will develop a sense of value that we may care for people more

than possessions, for honor more than honors, and for the dimensions of a home more than the details of a house.

7. Let us forever be best friends and partners, share each other's ideas and

ideals. The couple is now united and will pray for the blessings from God. The father-in-law offers the bride a sacred necklace.
