The Kvaszinger's arrived in Tokaj, from Prussia in the 1800s. They
immediately put down roots and one of them was employed as the
local baron’s steward. In 1929, winemaker Laszlo Kvaszinger’s
great- grandfather Ödön paid the baron’s gambling debts and
received Hatalos vineyard as a token of his appreciation.
Francois Haasbroek is, in our opinion, the man who made
Waterford Estate the Stellenbosch legend that it is. But he always had a dream of going it alone. So when he’d finished his shift he’d go searching for under appreciated vineyards,
ones whose grapes would disappear into blends, and then he’d stay up until 3am vinifying them. Then he'd head back to
work at Waterford the next day.
Bobar is a name not easily forgotten. Nay, it is one to remember! Their Syrah is grown on a classic Yarra Valley floor site – half-way up the northeast face of an exposed hill
with good drainage and excellent exposure to the morning sun.
However, Tom and Sally use Syrah to make a Pinot Noir style wine.
Bonkers, right?
Silice is the charming bad boy who nicked his older brother's worn
down leather jacket, only smokes hand-rolled cigarettes, and pumps iron while singing along to Robert
Plant on a Sunday. He exudes jammy red fruits with some of the silkiest tannins around this part of
town, where the soil is sandy in Luzech. When we asked Germain,
the winemaker at Croisille, if he makes magnums of Silice, he
responded, "why not just have a bucket and a straw?" One sip later,
and we couldn't agree more.

Domaine Garnier & Fils Epineuil
Pinot Noir, 2017, Burgundy, France
Cantina Ronca Ulderico Rosso, Veneto IGT, Italy
They say that this “can be drunk at any time and until dawn.” We agree. We like to open this top
blend - with its creamy, brioche and pastry flavours laced with
toasted almonds and white flowers over breakfast of an almond croissant and fresh strawberries. We then like to
toast the sun over the yardarm. It’s a beautiful treat with a
simple truffle pasta lunch or as an aperitif in the evening.
Xavier and Jérôme make eight wines. Only one is red. They nailed it first time. The Pinot
Noir grapes for this wine comes from a vineyard a bit smaller
than Trafalgar Square, which is farmed using no herbicides or insecticides. Fermented with
natural yeast and aged in seasoned oak for 12 months,
this should probably cost twice as much as it does.
Amarone’s hipster brother. This cannot technically be called
Amarone because it is made from rogue grapes and it lives on the wrong side of the tracks, but the
Ulderico Rosso - made in an appassimento-style - is as good as any Amarone we’ve tried. They use
no herbicides, insecticides or harvesting machines, and arecurrently in conversion to go
completely organic.
Szamorodni, literally means, "as it comes" because of Poles transporting barrels with
fermenting must back in the 16th century from Tokaj to Krakow.
Entomology and historical geekery aside, Lázlsó's
Szamorodni Édes is something exceptional - the grapes are
harvested with rare aszú berries, which are botrytized and each berry is hand-selected. Perfect
combination of tales, nobly rotted grapes, and thirst- quenching
acidity, Liquid gold!!

TIS THE SEASONThe days are short but the year has been long. Luckily London’s streets
are buzzing with festive excitement. It’s the most wonderful time of year; when the air is thick with pine & mulled wine, shop windows are glittering in the twilight and, as always, Humble Grape is opening up a
selection of our biggest treats. Why not?! You’ve earned it.

Did you just think Sutton Coldfield? That’s fine, so did
we. But this is very much yummy not Brummie. In this wine Dan and Steve
have tried to produce their vision of a classic Russian River Valley Chardonnay.
Grapes are picked from five of their eighty little plots
scattered through the region, most of the vines are
over 30 years old.
Starmont’s White wine evokes the unique spirit of the Carneros region! A state-of-the-art winery
located on the historic Stanly Ranch Estate, Starmont Winery &
Vineyards is a member of the Napa Sustainable Winegrowing
Group. The winery & estate vineyards have been certified
through the Napa Green Program since 2007. It gently
floats flavours of like a warm sea breeze. It’s both expressive and
approachable.
There’s a few things about Californians that you just feel as
soon as you meet them. Care-free, easy-going & highly spirited people, & when they
make wine you can even taste it! It's hard to imagine how life was
prior to tasting this naughty little number. It’s like sipping sunshine on Venice Beach at
Sunset... once you have a taste, you’ll be there in mind, body and spirit! Starmont winery, a
worthy of a spot on LA’s Walk of Fame!
Zinfandel is considered by many to be America’s heritage
grape & was introduced to California during the legendary Gold Rush. This one is a tribute
to Californian wine history & was sourced from some of the state’s oldest & most revered
wine regions, from family-owned vineyards that in some cases date back over 100
years.
What We Taste: Lemon, lime, peach, apricot, tropical fruit, ginger biscuit, pear &
cream.

A BESPOKE TASTING FOR LONDON WINE WEEK #LWW19
Nicolas Laugner’s winery is a real family winery. Grandma Allimant married Grandpa Laugner giving the winery its name, but in fact the family has 12 generations of
winemakers. They farm 12 hectares in Orschwiller, Northern Alsace, from which they make an
incredible 15 different wines, so this is super boutique stuff. They
only employ two part time employees, Nicolas, his Mum, Dad
and dog (a little white fluffy ball called Falka).
From their intriguing Rieslings to their groundbreaking Pinot Noirs, we love every wine & winemaker
from this family-run estate. Founded in 1849 by Dr. Deinhard, developed
by his son-in-law Leopold von Winning in 1907, the estate was
revived in 2007 by Achim Niederberger. Tragically Herr
Niederberger died in 2013, and his wife Jana now steers the ship. No
herbicides, no synthetic fertilisers, no copper, no filtering and no fining.
Every bottle is a winner.
What We Taste:Strawberry, raspberry, red currant, blossom,
lemon, pink grapefruit.
What We Taste:White pepper,
cardamom and spice with black fruits.

Ungeheuer Riesling Auslese,
2013, Pfalz, Germany
Made without herbicides, synthetic
fertilisers, copper, filtering or fining. The
name Von Winning says it all. It would only be a more fitting if this were
called Von-Epic, Von-Awesome or
Von-Party-in-My-Mouth
Grown under the somewhat suggestive eye of a statue of Eve,
this Riesling is your gateway to Paradise.
Single plot with oodles of flavours, 30% oak
contact. Elegant, fresh and sexy. *Phew*. Was
it good for you, too?
Ungeheuer can be translated as
“tremendous”, “immense” or “colossal”. Not words you would normally use to describe Riesling. But
this is tremendously complex, immensely
aromatic and colossally impressive.
Auslese wine is made from grapes harvested (by hand only) late in
the year, when the grapes are super
sun-soaked and ripe. So it’s Ungeheuer
(colossal, remember?) turned right up to 11.
What We Taste:Dry with juicy citrus fruit, peach, flowers,
dried herbs and spice.
What We Taste:Tangy citrus, spice, peach, green apple,
salty minerality.
What We Taste:Bold, full-throttle
honey, quince, salt, ripe peach.
What We Taste:Citrus fruit, ripe quince,
salt, apricots, and heavenly happiness.
Our fifth Humble Grape opens 15 July and we want you to come check it out! When you order a monthly flight, you will get a chance to win dinner for two (up to £100) & be one of the
first to check out London’s latest opening! (Winners will be contacted on 1 August & will need to redeem prize before to 31 August 2019)

We call this the hippopotamus wine. Winemaker Álvaro Castro spends so much time tending his vines that he has neglected his swimming pool, which is now
covered in a thick layer of algae. Things have gotten so bad
that he jokes about getting a hippo.
This intriguing wine is a little like a hippo: bigger bodied and
more nippy than you might expect, with a lot going on
beneath the surface.
The Schup family have been a mainstay in the Wienerwald
thermal region for 300 years and the latest generation are serial
entrepreneurs running not only a fantastic vineyard and winery,
but also Traiskirchen's local delicatessen and traditional Heurigen (restaurant/wine tavern). Gregor's son and daughter Gregor Jnr and
Johanna are the fifth generation
to run the family business.
What We Taste:Creamy citrus, ripening melon, a touch of smoky
spice and lean mineral notes.
What We Taste:Supple red and black fruit with a layer of flavour like
Mexican spiced hot chocolate.

A butterfly of a wine. Dão used to be home to many
cooperatives churning out large volumes of wine, and until 1980
that was exactly what this estate did. However, when
Álvaro Castro and his daughter Maria took over, the estate
metamorphosed from a pupa into a handsome butterfly.
Similarly their wines have the intricate complexity, delicate
touch and silky finish of a butterfly’s wing
Claret meets the Sound of Music. Three years in oak, four grape varieties, 300 years of history. Located below the
Anningers range, belonging to the municipality Guntramsdorf. Here is one of the best sites the
Thermenregion, as here the Eastern European steppe
climate meet with hot and humid Atlantic air & a touch of
the Mediterranean!
What We Taste:Dark figs, cassis, liquorice
and sweet balsamic.
What We Taste:Deep yellow, smoky on the
nose, cooked rhubarb, oranges, honey and delicate
gooseberry.
STICKY
The French describe these wines as “moelleux”, which - if you’re English - is a really tough word to saw without sounding like
you’re mocking them a bit, but it means soft, supple and
graceful, which is perfectly describes this. A wine that manages to be both richly
delicious and airy.
A clean, fruity, unctuous journey through history.
Almost 2,000 years ago a Roman author and naturalist called
Pliny the Elder wrote that: “The Muscat grape has been grown for a long time in Beaumes and its wine is remarkable.” Thanks to
people like Elizabeth and Philippe Bernard this legacy still
rings true today.
What We Taste:Spices, floral honey, dried apricot, mixed peel and refreshing lemongrass
What We Taste:Slightly woody,rich mellow
fruits,figgy, jammy and yummy

Taylor’s 10 Year Old Tawny Port,
Porto, NV, Portugal
Fonseca Crusted Crusted Port, NV, Porto, Portugal
Taylor’s blends its magnificent 10 year old tawny from its
extensive reserves of old cask aged Ports matured in the firm’s cool and tranquil cellars (known
as ‘lodges’) in Porto on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. It is the best selling 10 Year Old Aged Tawny Port in the UK.
Crusted port is a rare, traditional style that's relatively
unknown, but loved by connoisseurs. Aged in wood for four years and then rested for a further three in the cellars, this is bottled unfiltered to leave a
sediment and should be decanted before serving.
Fonseca is one of the few firms that continue to produce it.
What We Taste:Super-ripe berry fruit, opulent and minty and
powerful
What We Taste:Floral rose water, orange
peel, passionfruit, and white peach
SHERRY
Briny olive juice. Ripe fruits like apple give it a silky, creamy character.
Biologically aged deliciousness.
Do be lured by the cask of this 12 year old

Averaging 15 years in barrel this dry Oloroso is nuts; with hazelnuts and
brazil nuts, and some umami mushroom notes.
Exotically spiced, richly candied
with classic caramel overtones. This is like nectar from the gods.
Our sherries come from el Maestro Sierra, a small bodegas from high up in the hills of Jerez in Andalucia. It is run by nonagenarian Doña Pilar Pla Pechovierto and her daughter.
Premium Pre-Dinner
Owner Rose Jordaan describes her wines as: “wine made on a mountain”, and that’s no
exaggeration. She repurchased the old family farm, situated precariously on the hellishly
vertiginous slopes of the Helshoogte Pass, between
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, in 2006 and has returned it to
stunning form.

The Islander Estate “Wally White”, 2014,
Kangaroo Island, Australia
Weingut Von Winning Pinot Noir II, 2015, Pfalz,
Germany
A wine with a story like no other. In 2011, the day
before the harvest, audacious thieves armed
with a harvesting machine raided Von Winning’s Pinot Noir vineyards in the dead of night. They made away with some 2.5 tonnes of
grapes worth €100,000. This incredible wine is the
comeback.What We Taste:Sassy, creamy textured
mousse with baked apples.
The Islander Estate Vineyards is located near Parndana, an area originally cleared for farming by Soldier Settlers. To these Soldier Settlers, the term “Wally” was
used as a nickname for someone acting a fool and lacking in class. Australians often use opposites in
giving nicknames.
What We Taste:Lemon rind, white peach & tangy spice. This white is anything but a “Wally”!
What We Taste:Violets, toasty coffee, dark
chocolate.
