The mid­January meeting on PFAS with KDHEwas postponed until the federal governmentreopens, so representatives of EPA can attend.Recent articles in Politico reveal efforts by theDept. of Defense to slow the process ofestablishing PFAS water quality standardsprotective of human health. The most studied ofthe chemicals, PFOA and PFOS, have beenlinked with kidney and testicular cancer,hypertension and other ailments. They aresuspected to be contaminating at least 401military bases across the country where theywere used in firefighting foam, including Ft.Leavenworth.

EPA “Waters of the U.S.” HearingPostponedBY ELAINE GIESSEL, CONSERVATION CHAIR

EPA postponed the January 23, WOTUS hearingin KC, KS due to the government shutdown. The

formal notice of the proposed change in definitionof jurisdictional “Waters of the U.S.” has not yetbeen published in the Federal Register, which willstart the formal 60­day comment period. SierraClub strongly opposes the proposed rule, whichwould put Kansas headwater streams, tributariesand wetlands at risk for pollution and physicaldestruction. Stay tuned for updates. Coal Ash Contaminants in KansasBY ELAINE GIESSEL, CONSERVATION CHAIR

Utilities for decades have produced more than 100 million tons of coal burning wastes annually, containing contaminants like selenium, mercury, cadmium and arsenic associated with cancer and other serious health effects. Contamination has been found in 22 states at levels that would require them to prepare groundwater cleanup plans. Included is Westar’s Jeffrey Energy Center near St. Marys, KS, north of the Kansas River, a drinking water source for many communities. More info here:

Governor Laura Kelly has named Brad Lovelessto be Secretary of the Kansas Department ofWildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), effectiveJanuary 14, 2019. Loveless comes to thedepartment from a 34­year career with WestarEnergy where he was most recently the seniordirector of environmental conservation andsustainability. The Chapter looks forward toworking with Secretary Loveless on the KansasNongame Wildlife Advisory Council. Read More

The Kanza ExCom has been exploring ways to work with otherorganizations and leaders to implement specific strategies to reverse globalwarming using the Paul Hawken book Drawdown (www.drawdown.org ).

Our January hope for a winter hike was put on ice by . . . winter. Undaunted,we will try again on Saturday, March 2 at 9:00 a.m. to explore the GeorgeLatham Trail near Clinton Lake in Lawrence. The George Latham HikingTrail is located on the west end of Clinton Lake in the Woodridge PrimitiveArea and is open only to hikers. The trail is named in honor of GeorgeLatham who was one of the founders of the Kansas Trails Council.
