board, or a bus, in the community where the artist lives. There’s nothing better for an artist than having the entire town see their

Remember soapbox races? Now, take professional carmakers and one winding, steep-as-all-get-out hill. And you’ve got the Xtreme Gravity Racing series – the world’s premier gravity-powered racing competition. In this year’s series, the Nissan team took home awards for “Fastest Car” in one race and “Best Design” in another. That’s no small feat. Especially when you’re talking about engineers and designers who are more often seen working with sheet metal and VQ engines than fiberglass and bike pedals.

All it takes is months of hard, extracurricular work. Clocking out of the office only to find themselves, hours later, wallpaper-ing garage walls with sketches and tinkering with yacht-inspired steering. Spinning their wheels, this time the Italian-bike variety, to come up with the perfect creation. And, finally, realizing the Flying Torpedo – a performance masterpiece with

aerodynamics that lie somewhere between “a bar of soap and a teardrop.” Featuring a transparent, horizontal cockpit for the team’s clay-modeler-turned-driver, Charlie, who enjoyed a mere four inches between his feet to steer through as he rocketed down the course.

And while the motorless Flying Torpedo might not be in our product lineup, the unconventional thinking that went into it is: promising sleeker lines and more responsive handling. Because driving down a hill should be thrilling, whether you’re in an Altima, a Murano or, as the case may be, a simple wooden crate.

Klein Bikes wanted to show their passion for cycling in their catalog. The photography won every award in the country for Lars Topelmann and the catalog itself won many design awards as well. Oh, and it sold quite a few bikes too.

Pepsi, Pepsi Max, and Pepsi Refresh Project kept a couple of us quite busy. One launched a logo, one tried to get men to drink

diet cola, and the other is still trying to save the planet.

The most iconic thing about an Airstream trailer is its metallic exterior. What better surface to use than a close up of its metal seams and rivets.
