HistoryThe Path to Technological Leadership Milestones since 1990

More than two decades experience in permanent magnet technology

Originally a spin-off of the University of Ap-plied Sciences of the Saarland, VENSYS can look back on more than twenty years‘ experi-ence with gearless wind turbines. Licensees all over the world are the driving force behind our expansion in the important markets. With wind energy pioneer Hugo Denker (2002) and Goldwind Windenergy GmbH (2008) coming on board, VENSYS was in a position to continue growing, start serial production in Germany and also set up VENSYS Elektro-technik GmbH.

The only way to stay true to yourself is by changing

As of now, VENSYS wind turbines with more than 13,000 megawatts are on the grid worldwide. The VENSYS 1.5 MW plat-form is the best-selling gearless wind tur-bine of our time in the 1.5 megawatt class.

With the VENSYS 2.5 MW platform, there is now a solution available for the multi-mega-watt range which makes it possible, among other things, to economically generate en-vironmentally-friendly electricity even in in-land areas where wind levels are low.

What counts in the deserts of China is

simple yet reliable high-quality techno-

logy with a minimum of maintenance.

Proven time and again

The basis of success

The success of VENSYS wind turbines is based on five distinctive technological features founded on the basic principle of generating the maximum amount of energy while minimizing losses.

Keeping the number of components to a minimum

Beyond that principle, the VENSYS design philosophy is very simple: limit yourself to few high-quality construction parts, reduce the number of wear parts and only use dura-ble components.

Direct Drive

VENSYS relies on direct drive technology. The rotating speed of the rotor is transferred directly to the multi-polar generator – dispensing with the need for a high-maintenance gear unit that is susceptible to wear.

Permanent Technology

Permanent magnets are fixed to the rotating part of the generator. Excitation power thus saved is fully available as additional energy yield.

Full Power Converter System

VENSYS converter systems feature power plant properties and comply with the requirements and regulations of variousgrid operators.

VENSYS Pitch System

VENSYS uses patented blade pitch systems with triple redundancy. One special feature is the proven toothed belt drive which is lubrication-free and minimizes maintenance.

Air Cooling

VENSYS cooling systems are convincingly simple and robust at the same time – either as a passive external air cooling system or as a closed system with a heat exchanger.

Page 6: VENSYS Image English

TechnologyThe Generator

We don‘t bother with a gear unit – you shouldn‘t, either!

VENSYS wind turbines don‘t need high-main-tenance gear units that are highly suscepti-ble to wear. They are based on the genera-tor concept of a synchronous machine with permanent magnet excitation. The rotating speed of the rotor is transferred directly to the multi-polar generator. The gearless tech-nology combined with savings in excitation power result in a higher energy yield.

With the 1.5 MW platform, the generator is cooled by outside air. The VENSYS frequen-cy converter is also air-cooled.

Large rotor and low tower head mass

In the VENSYS 2.5 MW platform, the cooling system is a closed circuit. The air-to-air heat exchanger eliminates the need for additio-nal cooling fluid. The full enclosure protects the winding and the interior of the generator from external influences, such as salty and humid air, dust and dirt.

The VENSYS 2.5 MW platform comes with rotor diameters of 100m, 109m or 112m, thus increasing the yield significantly. Thanks to the compact design, its tower head mass is remarkably low.

Direct drive without compromise. The force of the

rotor is transferred directly onto the generator –

without a wear-prone gear unit.

Gearless VENSYS wind turbines are now being

manufactured on several continents – for instance

in Xian/China, as shown here.

TechnologyPermanent Magnet Technology

High energy conversion efficiency = higher yield

VENSYS makes it possible to utilize perma-nent magnet technology as used in electric drives in navigation and electric vehicles for wind energy technology.

VENSYS wind turbines are equipped with a directly driven synchronous generator with permanent magnet excitation. High-quality permanent magnets are fixed to the outer shell of the rotor. Simple yet innovative.

No excitation losses = even higher yield

In contrast to electrical excitation, perma-nent magnet technology does not have the disadvantage of additional excitation losses. The savings in excitation power are thus fully available as additional energy yield in VENSYS wind turbines.

This is a major asset especially in the parti-al-load range and helps to reduce the heat in the generator. Also, there is no need to transfer the excitation power with slip rings.

Low-wear and low-maintenance toothed belt drive

One special technical feature of VENSYS wind turbines is the lubrication-free and low-main-tenance toothed belt which transmits the force between the pitch drive and the blade. Our drive system minimizes wear and incre-ases safety.

The drive of the blade is equipped with an energy storage device (capacitor) which makes it possible to drive the blades into braking position in the event of a grid black-out. The capacitors can deliver the necessary power even in low temperatures. An additio-nal asset is their long service life.

Reducing forces and minimizing wear

Our innovative toothed belt drive for the blade pitch system has stood the test of time: for more than 17 years now. In more than 8,700 wind turbines around the world – and under the most different regional con-ditions: in strong wind areas just as much as on inland sites with increased hub height.

16

TechnologyThe Grid Connection

Connection with power plant properties

The infeed of short-circuit current, the quick separation from the grid or the opposite, the bridging of short-term voltage drops in the grid: All these are power plant properties offered by VENSYS wind turbines. Thanks to our full power converter system developed especially for this purpose, they meet the requirements and regulations of the various grid operators.

Meeting various grid requirements

The total power produced is directed via a VENSYS converter, which makes it possible to decouple the generator fully from the grid. This means that faults or voltage fluctuations in the grid cannot affect the control behavior of the VENSYS wind turbine.

The converter covers a wide idle power range (see graphic) and is able to support weak grids as well. Specifically for the German market, VENSYS wind turbines have been certified for the systems service bonus (Systemdienstleistungsbonus – SDL), thus meeting a legal requirement for a higher remuneration for electricity fed into the grid.

TechnologyThe Generator Cooling

Air cooling for the heart of the system

The generator is one of the core elements in the nacelle of any wind turbine. Generating electricity always entails the loss of heat, causing the copper windings to heat up. To avoid damage to the generator, the heat must be dissipated. VENSYS generators in 1.5 MW platforms are cooled making use of the external air flowing in directly through the cooling fins (see illustration below).

1 Air-to-air heat exchanger

2 Internal cooling circuit Generator cooling

3 Outer cooling circuit External air

Clean air instead of additional working materials

As the generator in the 2.5 MW platform has higher power density, VENSYS development engineers have taken the cooling concept to a higher level. The result: A fully encap-sulated active air cooling system with an air- to-air heat exchanger. Clean air flows through the stator winding and dissipates the heat where the highest temperatures occur (see illustration on the right side).

An equally robust and effective system which completely dispenses with additional working materials such as cooling liquids or oils – a step in the right direction, also from an ecological point of view.

VENSYS 1.2 MW PlatformThe Pioneer

VENSYS 1.5 MW PlatformThe Successful One

The 1.2 MW platform is the technological foundation for the successful range of VENSYS models. The first turbine in Germany (2003) was followed by others in China and Canada.

The VENSYS 1.5 MW platform is the world’s best-selling gearless 1.5 MW turbine – with more than 8,000 turbines installed around the globe. Innovative and proven time and time again.

For special wind park requirements

Simply innovative. Gearless and with per-manent magnet technology instead of ex-citation power and gearbox losses. With an air-cooled generator and air-cooled VENSYS frequency converter for the most diverse grid requirements.

With a low-maintenance blade pitch system using a toothed belt drive instead of the traditional drive pinion.

Four different rotor diameters

With more than 8,600 turbines worldwide, the 1.5 MW platform today is the best-selling gearless wind turbine of its class.

70, 77, 82 and 87 meters: Offering a choice between four different rotor diameters, it is suitable for the most diverse wind zones.
