Maya Zumaya, our WOTM 918 Community Service chair, wears many hats, personally and professionally. Because of her many interests and involvements, she is a tremendous re-source in letting us know where help is needed in our com-munity. Brothers and Co-Workers at the Ventura Lodge,

Simply ask a friend: How would you like to join the finest non-profit organization around? You are a dear friend and I would like to take you to our local lodge and have you discover the love I have for our fraternity. The cost is minimal and you would not believe the benefits you are eligible for, simply by joining. Who wouldn’t want to accept your offer?

Sponsoring is not just asking, it’s guiding that new member and encour-aging them to become ac-tive in your local lodge. Once they become famil-iar with their own lodge, take the time to explain what their membership means to the rest of the fraternity. Further expand on

Mooseheart, Moosehaven and Commu-nity Service. They will not believe what the fraternity does for those in

need. Don’t hesitate – sponsor them today! Print or download our Sponsor Guide for tips on talking to potential members. This guide can be found on the Moose International website at www.mooseintl.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Sponsor-Guide.pdf.

It is so important to explain what a Moose member is, how we take care of our youth at Mooseheart and our sen-iors at Moosehaven.

It is more than “Alcohol Activism.” It is about getting involved

and helping your lodge and supporting your board with a committee chairmanship, taking on the role of preparing a dinner, cleaning up, sup-porting the meal or event the Lodge is having, and attending the general meetings that the Lodge or Chapter have. The cal-endar of events is posted on the Moose News bul-letin board in the Social Quarters.

It is up to us old-time Moose members to let the newer members know what the Loyal Order of the Moose is all about! How it is the best fraterni-ty because we take care of our own, the seniors and children.

Fraternally yours, Ed Stevenson Governor

MESSAGE FROM YOUR SENIOR REGENT: AUGUST 2019

Page 3 Volume 3, Issue 10 FEBRUARY 2020

MESSAGE FROM YOUR WOTM SR. REGENT: FEB. 2020

Hello, my fellow Ventura Moose members,

Happy Year! The Women of the Moose and Loyal Order of the Moose had a great New Year’s Eve Party. There was some great music by Cin-namon Whiskey, great food, and of course great drinks. There was a lot of dancing, people gathering and having a good time. Thanks to all who volun-teered to make sure the party went smoothly.

We hosted the first District 14 meeting of the year on Sunday, Jan. 12. It was a good turnout and all the lodges shared ideas and worked togeth-er. Oxnard will be hosting the Sweetheart Dance on Saturday, Feb. 8. (More info on page 5.)

Our first Town Hall meeting was on Saturday, Jan. 25. Thanks to all those who attended. There was quite a bit covered in the meeting: roof, financ-es, general meetings, etc.

I know we all have our own opinions, however, by attending the general meetings your voices can be heard and you can

make a difference. You do have the right

to vote on LOOM and WOTM board ideas and decisions. You can say YES or NO to what is brought to the floor, and the majority wins.

Unfortunately, women cannot attend LOOM meetings (unless invited by LOOM) where deci-sions are made that affect the lodge, but please let your husband, boyfriend, significant other, brother or any male that will lis-ten to you (of course they must be a Moose member) know how you feel. Encourage them to attend and have them take your vote to the meet-ing. This is the first step to making changes...yes, maybe baby steps, but it’s a start. Let’s make a dif-ference!

We will have our Bun-co on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. If you have never

participat-ed, please join us. It easy to learn and lots of fun! We look forward to seeing you

all there. You may be lucky enough and win a prize.

Remember, Thursday, Feb. 27 is the check-in date for the CA/NV Moose Association Mid-Year Conference in Buena Park, Calif.

The Conference is from Feb. 28 to March 1. Liz Soprano, Maya Zumaya and I will receive the Academy of Friend-ship degree on Sunday.

The Women of the Moose will serve dinner on Valentine’s Day, Fri-day, Feb. 14, however, we will not be serving dinner on Feb. 28 as we will be attending the conference.

Please have a wonder-ful month! Sincerely, Rose Schultz Senior Regent

Information and Opinions Are Expressed at Ventura Lodge Town Hall Meeting on Jan. 25

Ventura Moose mem-bers filled nearly every chair on Saturday, Jan. 25

during the Town Hall Meet-ing conducted by Territory Manager John Damasio (pictured above at the lec-tern). The meeting began with an account of the LOOM budget. As stated by Mr. Damasio, currently the Ventura Lodge (LOOM ac-count), there is $1,400 in one account, $2,000 in an-other account, and $66,000 in a CD saved for emergen-cy situations. While Mr. Damasio said his review of the LOOM’s budget did not reveal any-thing out of the ordinary and all accounts were docu-

mented and in order, there will be a third-party audit in the near future to deter-mine the vitality of the LOOM budget revenue and expenditures. Understanding a prima-ry concern of Moose mem-bers is the roof repair, it was explained that the orig-inal contract bid for the roof did not hold due to current trends in roofing contracts throughout Ventu-ra County. Rates are said to have more than doubled in the aftermath of several fires within our county. Mr. Damasio further re-ported that, after review, LOOM had approximately $4,500 saved for the roof repair and WOTM had

some money saved as well. (Although it was not re-ported at the meeting how much WOTM had in their account for the roof, the WOTM Recorder reports at every Chapter business meeting that exactly $2,258.79 [funds raised from August 2018 Car Show] is earmarked for re-pair of the roof.) Members expressed that an update on the status of the roof repair is grossly overdue given the fact a bid was decided upon in June of 2019 and we are now in January 2020. In addition, it was ex-pressed that funds raised for this repair came from

More than 70 people attended this event.

the members who have continued to endure leaks in the ceilings over the bar area and pool tables when-ever the rain comes. Fur-ther, it was noted that funds for the repair were charted in the lodge’s Social Quar-ters using red permanent marker to fill the $8,000 goal on poster board, which was colored in when the goal was achieved! Ed Stevenson, Ventura Moose 1394 governor, re-layed the following clarifi-cations and reminded all about some Moose rules: 1. Roof repair quote was initially $8,000, but new estimate is $16,000. 2. Attend the General Meetings to voice your concerns and opinions and ideas, and vote on Lodge (LOOM) and Chapter (WOTM) decisions and is-sues. Volunteering to serve

as board members in the coming Moose year also was stressed. 3. Do not smoke on the porch or deck. 4. Do not smoke mariju-ana on Moose property. 5. Only registered ser-vice animals are allowed in Moose building, and 6. Do not bring your own meals to the lodge when WOTM or LOOM are preparing dinners; sup-port the hard work of your Boards of Officers. Additional concerns were raised about the So-cial Quarters, which were closed during the meet-ing, reportedly to promote better attendance at the Town Hall. Members pointed out that the Social Quarters need only be closed during a meeting when the gather-ing is being held inside the Social Quarters. Since the Town Hall Meeting took

place in the large hall, and not the Social Quar-ters, members expressed concern over a loss in reve-nue during this time. In concluding, the Terri-tory Manager discussed Moose International and screened two new videos: One on Moosehaven and its operations, and the second on the “One Moose” pro-posal which would unite the men and women into one governing entity. This concept is to be voted on at the International Conven-tion in Milwaukee in May 2020 and Ventura Moose members showed over-whelming support by their applause. (Please see pages 23-25 in this newsletter for com-plete information on the “One Moose” concept.)

By Jazzmin Callegari WOTM 918 Recorder & Newsletter Co-Editor

Even though I am an officer of the Women of the Moose and assist in publication of our Ventura Moose Newsletter, I am writing this as a loyal and dedicated member of the Moose, just like you and the more than one million members in over 1,500 communities across all 50 states, Canada and Great Britain.

I have been a member a mere five years; have served on WOTM commit-tees; have served as an of-ficer on the WOTM board for four years, including Senior Regent; have been Editor and Co-Editor of our Moose Newsletter for three years; and strongly, whole-heartedly believe in the Moose organization.

Knowing I could make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s just one person, is the main reason why I became a member (granted...having fun with my friends while drinking my favorite Jack cocktail was also a great incentive.)

Last year there was a piece included in our July 2019 newsletter that really

bothered me. It was titled “How to Wreck a Good Moose Lodge.” It con-tained items like “Don’t attend meetings,” Don’t sign up new members,” etc. This article was even posted around the lodge. Even though I assist with the newsletter, I am not the only voice on what is in-cluded, because everyone gets a say -- yes, even YOU!

I strongly believe neg-ativity is a killer and can burn like a wildfire! Not only in your personal life, but definitely in an estab-lishment like our lodge. I’ve seen this wildfire start slowly and, unfortunately, it’s burning pretty high these days. I get it! It’s re-ally hard to stay positive and remember our purpose as a Moose member when we are faced with unfair, irrational, arbitrary, unjust matters which we feel we have no control over.

I am a WOTM member. Trust me, it’s hard to ac-cept that in the year 2020, there are still establish-ments where men have more of a say than women, just because of gender. We are all Moose members.

Have you ever heard a four-legged moose in the

wild bawl, grunt or wail? Yeah, I hadn’t either, but I asked Alexa, and dang…they are loud! Well, we are Moose, all of us, and we all have a voice…HEAR OUR BAWL!

You do not need to be on the Board of Officers to make a difference, voice your concerns and express your ideas. We need more members to speak up and express their concerns and ideas for the betterment of our lodge. Just like the love, positivity and hope that are much needed in the world, we all can make a difference in our own lives and at our Moose lodge. Regardless of how down and negative you feel, turn that negative into a posi-tive, grab your boot straps, lift your chin up, and re-member YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

Therefore, I have decid-ed to create my own publi-cation, calling it “HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MOOSE LODGE.”

I hope you like it and make it run like wildfire around our Ventura Moose Lodge and, hopefully, eve-ry Moose lodge on our awesome fraternity!

Editorial

Members: Be Positive, Not Negative!

Volume 3, Issue 10 FEBRUARY 2020 Page 13

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MOOSE LODGE!

1. Work together as one unit, men and women. We all have great skills to contrib-ute. Respect each other. Remember the pur-pose of the Moose is to help Mooseheart, Moosehaven, and our local community. Working together in harmony not only makes it fun, but promotes more members to join.

2. If you attend a meeting, express your concerns and ideas in a positive way. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Be prepared to explain your idea or concern in a positive, respectful, and comprehensive manner. Remember that certain procedures cannot be changed immediately, but there are ways to communicate and get the mes-sage across to those at Moose International.

3. Join the Board of Officers or become a committee chairman. Training and guid-ance are provided. You may discover a hid-den leadership talent you never knew you had. This really helps your self-esteem, en-ables you to be a part of a remarkable group with the same goal, and looks great on a resume.

4. If you are appointed to a committee, assist and attend committee meetings. Make sure you express your ideas in a posi-tive way. If your idea is not accepted, don’t get mad and pout, but understand and ac-cept that majority rules. Don’t give up! Your next idea might make the difference to a successful fundraiser!

5. If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Remember we all have bad days when we are just feeling down, sick, or frustrated with life. Stop and think before you speak. Will it benefit oth-ers or am I just b****ing to make me feel better?

6. Volunteer and take initiative to im-prove your lodge. If you see something that needs cleaning or picking up, clean it or pick it up (if it is safe to do so). If you see something that can be improved or re-paired, inform the Administrator or bring it to a General Meeting with your idea on how it can be fixed. Be ready to lead the improvements or provide assistance to rem-edy the issue. You will feel great after-wards!

7. Pay your dues on time. This helps the Membership Retention Committee dedicate their time and effort in retaining members and promoting membership, instead of hav-ing to jump on the phone and play phone tag with members whose dues have ex-pired.

8. Remember to update your contact in-formation if it changes. You can change your information on www.mooseintl.org, notify the Board of Officers, or submit a contact information change to the bartend-er, if they assist with this responsibility. This enables you to continue receiving your mail, newsletters or other Moose corre-spondence and reminders.

9. Sign up new members. Share with your friends and family the Moose purpose and how you can help others while having a great time. Remember, one hundred per-cent of funds donated to Moose Charities goes directly to the charity.

10. And last, but not least:

PROMOTE POSITIVITY,

PROMOTE MOOSE LOVE,

PROMOTE THE MOOSE PURPOSE!

CA/NV Moose Association Mooseheart Activity Center Project

The Ventura Moose Lodge is happy to an-nounce its participa-tion in assisting the CA/NV Moose Asso-ciation to raise and donate a minimum of $150,000 to be used for construction of a new Mooseheart Ac-tivity Building.

The Ventura Wom-en of the Moose have successfully met this year’s goal by donat-ing $370 to this prom-ising project dedicated to providing our chil-dren at Mooseheart an opportunity to im-prove social skills,

build confidence, ob-tain academic support and, overall, provide an environment that creates a sense of be-longing.

This does not mean we are done! We wel-come any fundraising ideas and personal do-nations for this worthy project.

Who knows…we may be able to com-plete and even exceed our commitment this year. Wouldn’t that be awesome!
