Venture March, 2020 clock adjustment (forward 1 hour): 3/8/2020
Sun Valley, Idaho 2020
By Bob Maclauchlan, trip leader
It’s never fun getting up at 4 in the morning and dragging yourself to the airport, unless it’s a vacation and
you’re going on a ski trip to Sun Valley (or anywhere else) with 39 others. We
had a 6:30 AM flight to Denver where we had a 3-hour layover before
catching a 63 seat ERJ jet into Sun Valley airport, a short 20-minute drive
from our condos at the luxurious Sun Valley Lodge. The lodge packed us and
our equipment on their shuttles and dropped us off at the front door. The
resort handles group trips quite frequently and had 2 of the resort buses,
one small box truck and a couple of cargo shuttles for our group. One of the
cargo shuttles is pictured to the right, thoroughly packed→
We proceeded to a meeting room where we were served munchies
and beverages for our welcome reception. Kevin Bracken, Group Manager,
handed out lift tickets, bus schedules, room keys and all the other
information we would need to get around the property and town. We left
the party and walked to our large and very well decorated condos where our
luggage and equipment had already been delivered. It was a nice touch only
having to gather our stuff at the airport and only walk about 50 yards to the
shuttle and then having it in the room when we got there.
I believe things were mellow on Saturday night after the travel day and anticipation of getting on the mountain bright
and early Sunday morning. Surprisingly the mountain was not very busy for a Sunday, while talking to a local he told me
Sunday’s were usually quiet because it is “church day”. All the better for us, the only unfortunate part was Mother
Nature didn’t cooperate with any new snow for most of the week but did greet us with some high winds especially at
the top of the mountain. We skied mostly long steep groomers for the week, as the trees and off piste were a little
crusty all week.
Baldy Mountain, the larger of the two (Dollar
Mountain is about 1,500’ vertical) has two
base areas, River Run where the gondola is
located ,and Warm Springs where you can smell the sulfur hot springs from the river that separates both bases from the
parking lots. Staying at The Lodge, we were allowed to store our equipment for free every day so we didn’t have to lug
them back and forth every day on the shuttle buses. Sunday was also Super Bowl Sunday so a large number went to
Whiskey Jack’s that was already busy when Hi Rise arrived so Meg Goetz commandeered the pool tables for the gang to
sit around to enjoy drink specials, a taco bar and a very entertaining football game.
Monday, as every other day we were back on the mountain, but on this
day, we had our one and only injury when RoseAnn took a spill and the
bindings didn’t release causing a sprain to her knee and a trip to the
hospital. Special thanks to Meg, Andy and Jessie (brought her shoes to
the mountain) for their assistance during her time of need.
That evening our group descended upon a local Italian restaurant,
Ricco’s, for
dinner. We
were served
salad and had
our choice of
lasagna,
chicken
parmigiana
or marsala (more like chicken alfredo), meatball marinara, a
vegetarian dinner and dessert. I’m getting hungry just
thinking about it. We all ate well and had an enjoyable
evening in Downtown Ketchum.
On the mountain we were fortunate enough to find a very
comfortable location on Olympic Lane with a fantastic view of
the town and valley to enjoy one of our favorite activities on
the mountain, The Vista Beer! We were just off the run next
to the boundary rope and a ski patrol toboggan the Cindy and
Cesare used as a nice dry seat. This is a great time to share our
day’s ski activities (all of the great runs we enjoyed all day)
and still had about a 5-minute run to the bottom. The other
daily activity was the Après Ski soak at the condos in the
outdoor hot tub that fit about 15 comfortably and 20 for a lot
of fun. There was also a large heated pool that was always
busy as well. Although it didn’t stop us, we were told not to
bring our personal beverages into the area because they had bar service which was well run, but didn’t stop us from
having a lot of “water bottles” with us.
Saturday was our departure when all of our bags were picked up outside our doors at 9:30 AM and delivered to the
doors at the airport. Hotel check out was at 11
and the bus departed at 12:30 so we had a clean
out your fridge party in the main lobby of the
hotel while waiting for our shuttle and taking a
look at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Hummer that
was parked out the front door waiting for him to
depart back to California.
We had smooth flights through Denver, many of
our group
had
breakfast
there and
we landed a
bit early just
after 10 PM
in CLE.
Unfortunately I didn’t get to thank everyone while we were waiting for our luggage
at the CLE airport as I needed to retrieve our vehicle from the Park & Fly lot; thank
you very much for joining us on the trip but I hope you all had a great time and
appreciate you joining us.
The club is already preparing and researching where the week long 2021 trip will be heading. We hope to see you at our
