Dear SDSVP Stakeholders,

This past year has been so very hard on everybody. The unprecedented economic challenges have created hardships for our entire community, our local nonprofits, our families and friends, and our Partners. Never before in SDSVP’s history has our challenge been greater. And never before in SDSVP’s history has our partnership banded together to such a great extent to provide assistance to each other and to San Diego’s nonprofit community.

While the nonprofit industry as a whole suffered a 30% to 40% reduction in revenues, SDSVP held its own. This accomplishment highlights what a great partnership we have. Even in these tumultuous times, we recruited 24 new Partners in the past 12 months. Perhaps even more impressive is that SDSVP actually increased its impact to the community, donating a record $3 million of cash and value-added services by our Partners to our current and former Investees. Our Partners donated over 9,000 hours of their expertise, and according to our Investees, this gift is even more valuable than our cash donation.

This past year our Partners chose to support two nonprofits in the youth sector. We began a wide-reaching research effort to better understand the youth sector. Ultimately, our Partners evaluated some 50 proposals from San Diego area nonprofits serving youth. In the end we decided to support A Reason To Survive (ARTS) and Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF). ARTS is dedicated to healing, inspiring, and empowering children facing life challenges by providing innovative arts-based programs, education, and opportunities. TKF is dedicated to breaking the cycle of youth violence by empowering kids, saving lives and teaching peace.

As we add ARTS and TKF to our portfolio, two fabulous foster care organizations, La Cuna and Angels, have completed their three-year grant cycle. We are proud of their accomplishments and growth over the past years. We look forward to their continued growth and a close relationship.

I sincerely thank all the Partners, corporate sponsors, and community supporters who have donated their time, expertise, and resources to serve San Diego through SDSVP. San Diego is a stronger community because of your work, and I am proud to be a Partner with you.

Best Regards,

Mark Fackler

Chair, SDSVP Board of Advisors, 2008-2009

our investees100% investee satisfactionsdsVP prides itself on its transparency with investees, and its high level of engagement requires a strong foundation of trust. as such, a high degree of satisfaction with their sdsVP relationship is a prerequisite for any meaningful capacity building work. over the past year, our Partners donated over 9,000 hours to the community and 58 Partners volunteered on projects that focused on strengthening capacity.

investees received the most value in capacity building areas: 92% mission, Vision, strategy and Planning 88% management team leadership

our partnersPartners join sdsVP for many reasons including the leverage of their monetary investment, the ability for a hands-on, strategic volunteer experience and a connection to like-minded people. Partners consistently indicate “the people” as the aspect they like most about sdsVP. as a result, sdsVP continues to be innovative with its educational programs and opportunities for Partners to connect through the newly created Capacity Building Partner Bootcamp, monthly educational luncheons and Fireside Chats. Consequently, 93% of Partners were extremely satisfied with their sdsVP experience, which is the highest rating since inception.

in addition to satisfaction, sdsVP Partners increased their giving, became more strategic in their giving and became more involved in the community. What’s the number one reason indicated for the change? Joining sdsVP.

ray and gina ellisray and Gina ellis found sdsVP through their involvement with second Chance, an emeritus investee. they joined sdsVP because, like many Partners, they recognize that sdsVP provides a unique opportunity to leverage financial contributions and expertise to produce long-term results.

as ray celebrates his first anniversary on sdsVP’s board, he says that the organization’s return on investment is crucial, and demand is high for his Fund development resource team’s services. his professional background includes being Principal for his own investment and consulting firm, serving as President of marketing for Protocol Communications, and Founder of mC direct, noted for its dominance in the direct mail and marketing industries.

in addition to their philanthropic efforts through sdsVP, ray and Gina’s family foundation supports a variety of local nonprofits. ray and Gina live in Carmel Valley with their 7-year-old son, Jake. ray also has a 24-year-old son, matt, working in los angeles, and a 19-year-old daughter, Jessica, who is enjoying her college experience at texas Christian university. Both matt and Jessica are starting young in their philanthropy with their involvement in the ellis Family Foundation.

joanne bergabout a year ago, Joanne Berg and husband tom hunt turned the daily management of their manufacturing company over to their employees, giving Joanne the opportunity to find new ways to spend her time. an experienced CFo, Joanne finds her financial skills in demand now more than ever, due to the economic slowdown and the need for her specific experience. she chairs the newly-formed Business operations resource team, which provides consulting expertise to nonprofits. she is confident that her team’s valuable input will help nonprofits make good decisions.

Joanne describes herself as resourceful and creative; she likes to look at the big picture when deciding how to advise the many nonprofits she deals with through sdsVP. the highlight of her involvement with sdsVP is working with smart, creative problem-solvers.

Joanne started another new venture this year: teaching managerial accounting and financial management through uCsd extension. When she’s not advising and teaching, she’s riding trails, though she admits college-age daughter sara hunt is the better horsewoman.

partners making a difference david lynn

david lynn joined sdsVP after hearing about the organization from the san diego Foundation, where he serves on the Balboa Park trust. a passion for the environment drew him to sdsVP’s environment accelerator Fund, and he now serves as a strategic advisor to equinox Center, focused on economically sound environmental policy.

david’s interest in efficiency and process improvement permeates both his it consulting work and his contributions to sdsVP. Charitable giving has always been part of his life, though he says recognition for his efforts isn’t important—he’s happiest staying in the background and making things happen. david is pleased with the friendliness and openness of his fellow Partners, many of whom he considers unofficial mentors.

When not over-committed, david spends his time walking through Balboa Park and the san diego backcountry with his wife Paula and their two dogs.

the bingham stone awardThe Bingham Stone Award is named in recognition of the founders of San Diego Social Venture Partners, Darcy Bingham and Carrie Stone. Each year, a Partner is given the Bingham Stone Award to honor outstanding leadership skills, commitment, and “no BS” attitude. Each recipient exemplifies our goal of developing engaged philanthropists who are accelerating social change in the community.

This year’s winner of the Bingham Stone Award is Joyce Ross. As a former professor, Joyce is accustomed to sharing her views with others in the hopes that they’ll learn something in the process. But Joyce also knows that real value comes when we can learn from those around us, too. This sense of openness characterizes Joyce’s involvement with Social Venture Partners.

Joyce has experienced a bit of everything, heading both the Investment Working Group and the Board Development Resource Team; serving on SDSVP’s Board; working closely with many Investees, including Angels and the Community Resource Center; and devoting time to lending a hand to new Partners. She realized some time ago that a good job brings great personal delight or alleviates the suffering of others. She knows SDSVP’s value is that it does both.

Joyce says being nominated for the Bingham Stone Award is special because it signifies recognition by her peers. She’s continually awed by the talent of her fellow Partners, and says her involvement with SDSVP has made her more aware of the challenges facing nonprofits and the limited number we serve compared to the number who need our help. Now Joyce is more thoughtful in evaluating nonprofits, always considering their lasting impact. In considering SDSVP’s lasting impact, Joyce notes that our Investees are extremely grateful for our involvement and our Partners are extremely grateful for the ability to volunteer in a strategic way – it’s a win-win.

We are certainly grateful for Joyce’s energetic commitment to SDSVP!

angels foster family network (since 2006)Amy Larson and Joyce Ross, Lead Partners

“The unique gift we received from SDSVP was a significant financial contribution that made a serious impact on the services we have been able to provide. However, the added gift of expertise, knowledge, and support provided by so many of SDSVP’s talented professionals have truly been a gift, one that will keep on giving for many years to come. We thank all Partners of SDSVP for their support of Angels Foster Family Network!”

Cathy riChman, Founder and eXeCutiVe direCtoR

angels is a licensed, private nonprofit san diego foster family agency with a unique emphasis on the stable placement of abused foster infants with healthy, nurturing families who promote emotional bonding, resulting in happy, productive, secure adults. their vision is to be the model for improving the foster infant experience.

in 2006, angels placed 34 babies; in 2007, the total grew to 54; in 2008, 60 more babies were placed; and in 2009, an aggressive goal of 65 babies has been set. the marketing services and strong leadership mentoring provided by many sdsVP Partners over the past 3 years have led to angels’ success and, ultimately, to changing the lives of the most vulnerable of all foster children—the babies.

la cuna (since 2006)Diane Wintriss, Lead Partner

“When I look back on all that SDSVP has done for us over the past three years, I can tell you that the hands-on coaching and infrastructure support in helping us build a stronger nonprofit has been more valuable than the funding we received.”

raChel humPhreys, Founder and eXeCutiVe direCtor

la Cuna, spanish for “cradle,” was licensed in may of 2005 as san diego’s first foster family agency dedicated specifically to both the birth-to-five-year-old population and the latino community. the mission of la Cuna is to ensure that latino foster infants and toddlers grow up safe, happy, and healthy. sdsVP has provided la Cuna technology assistance, marketing support, and coaching on building best practices around finances. last year sdsVP helped the staff and board create a new method of financial planning—one that is more flexible in response to an unpredictable economy.

la Cuna continues to find answers to some of foster care’s toughest issues. By focusing on very young children, they are able to make a dramatic difference in the lives of each child placed in their care. they are leveraging the funds invested early in life to save millions of dollars later.

community resource center (since 2007)Morgan Day, Bob Papera and Rick Ross, Lead Partners

“With the leadership of SDSVP, Community Resource Center had several “aha” moments that enabled us to align our mission and programs to provide “Safety, Stability and a Path to Self-Sufficiency” for our clients.

laurin Pause, eXeCutiVe direCtor

When Community resource Center (CrC) was facing the challenges of an economic downturn, sdsVP provided the necessary talent to help the organization define its strengths and use those existing strengths to create a vision to assist clients in achieving a path to self-sufficiency. even before its strategic outcome Plan was complete, CrC was incorporating these concepts into proposals that have already produced new contract awards for the organization. With its mission and programs now aligned, CrC has established a strategic relationship with the County to deliver food programs and services to families in north County and to secure funding for north County under the economic stimulus Package.

corporation for supportive housing (since 2007)Sherri Neasham, Lead Partner

“With SDSVP’s investment, CSH has achieved unprecedented results. In just two years, CSH has spurred the creation of over 200 supportive housing units through mandates to create housing for the homeless with disabilities, along with new funds and new partners to expand our work.”

simone ruFF, direCtor

the Corporation for supportive housing (Csh) began their work with sdsVP with intensive strategic planning, resulting in the organization’s first “aha” moment with the Partners. Csh fundamentally redefined their role from a provider of technical assistance to a catalyst that spurs the creation and operation of supportive housing.

in addition to crystallizing their focus, sdsVP has enabled Csh to acquire mandates that require the creation of new housing for people who are homeless and disabled. this breakthrough achievement has brought new Partners to the table and is adding tremendously to san diego’s capacity to respond to the crisis of homelessness. sdsVP has also supported the creative use of salesforce.com to track, measure, and report on key metrics that reflect Csh’s progress on core initiatives. over the three years of sdsVP’s investment, Csh will enable 250 homeless individuals with disabling health conditions to exit the streets and have a roof over their heads.

elder law & advocacy (since 2008)Richard Bockoff, Lead Partner

“With the assistance of SDSVP, the Elder Law & Advocacy staff and board have gained valuable skills to meet challenges, making significant progress towards its many goals.”

Carolyn reilly, eXeCutiVe direCtor and suPerVisinG attorney

helping an increasing population of seniors, many of whom are facing or will face serious financial, economic, and medical challenges, is a daunting responsibility. When seniors with limited means need legal services, they turn to elder law & advocacy, whose core mission is to protect seniors by providing legal advice, advocacy, and education.

to meet the increase in need for services, the organization recently added several new programs, including senior shield, a financial elder abuse and fraud prevention program; the court-based Bilingual Conservatorship Clinic in el Centro; and Partners in Caring, an innovative collaboration serving low-income minority caregivers near the border. sdsVP helped elder law & advocacy build capacity within these programs.

elder law & advocacy is excited about building upon the strong foundation created by their partnership with sdsVP and will continue to work on strategic planning, fiscal sustainability, advocacy, and public relations and marketing.

elderhelp of san diego (since 2008)Alan Sorkin, Lead Partner

“In 2008, ElderHelp piloted the Concierge Club. SDSVP’s assistance in key areas was extremely constructive as we prepare for a full-scale launch.”

leane marChese, eXeCutiVe direCtor

elderhelp’s Concierge Club provides home-based care services to seniors and their families to help seniors continue to live in their own homes. the services are customized to each senior through a personal care coordinator, and all home care services are provided by a passionate and skilled corps of volunteers. memberships for low-income seniors are free, while seniors with sufficient resources pay an affordable monthly membership that costs much less than similar services in the for-profit sector.

elderhelp, in partnership with sdsVP, has focused on bundling and pricing for the Concierge Club services and benefits and has overhauled their accounting systems and operations. these activities are key preparations for a full-scale launch later in 2009. over the coming fiscal year, elderhelp looks forward to working with sdsVP as they refine the Club’s business plan, marketing program, and it systems, which are crucial elements to expanding the number of seniors they can serve.

SDSVP’s focus area for 2009 was Youth and Children in San Diego County. After months of researching the sector, reading many proposals, and conducting several site visits, we are excited to announce that we’ve selected A Reason to Survive (ARTS) and Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF) as our new Investees.09

sdsvp annual report 2009 09

a reason to survive - arts (since 2009)Scott Tritt and Angela Hill, Lead Partners

“ARTS is thrilled to launch its partnership with SDSVP over the next three years to strengthen our capacity, evaluate and measure our impact, and position ourselves to expand and replicate our programs to reach even more youth. I feel like the guy in the Verizon commercial—with a team behind me the whole way.”

matt d’arriGo, Founder and eXeCutiVe direCtor

Founded in 2001 by artist matt d’arrigo, a reason to survive (arts) offers life-changing opportunities to san diego’s underserved young people by providing a safe, nurturing and fun environment to express themselves via the visual, performing, and literary art mediums. ninety percent of the youth arts serves are considered low-income, and all programs are free.

arts reaches over 10,000 children annually through the Pat d’arrigo arts Center, VanGo transportation, community outreach programs, community art projects, scholarships and arts enterprises—arts-based businesses employing homeless and low-income youths. in collaboration with over 30 community partners and through outreach programs at rady Children’s hospital, ronald mcdonald house, san diego Center for Children, and community art projects, arts has reached over 50,000 youths since its inception.

in partnership with sdsVP, arts looks forward to positioning itself for growth and replication by focusing on building capacity and strengthening its board development, fund development, marketing, and public relations initiatives.

tariq khamisa foundation - tkf (since 2009)Wendy Gibson, Patsy Hartman, Steve Ness and Andy Rinde, Lead Partners

“Marrying corporate business strategies with the heart of a nonprofit is sure to equal success. We look forward to our partnership with SDSVP in order to refine our strategies for our long-term success.”

lisa GroGan, eXeCutiVe direCtor

the tariq Khamisa Foundation (tKF) is dedicated to breaking the cycle of youth violence by empowering kids, saving lives and teaching peace. through its school-based violence prevention programs, tKF teaches young people about the realities of gangs and violence, and about the power of forgiveness.

since 1995, tKF has provided over 115,000 san diego County youth with the tools they need to make nonviolent choices. a 2008 report prepared by the san diego Police department noted a 25% decrease in crime during after-school hours in the neighborhoods surrounding schools where tKF has programs. Partnering with sdsVP enables tKF to continue making a positive impact on youth and creating safer communities. By partnering with sdsVP, tKF also aims to improve its operational infrastructure and redesign its interventions to become a national, replicable model for violence prevention.

resource teamscreating impact

10 sdsvp annual report 2009

sdsvp resource teamssdsVP resource teams are comprised of experienced Partners with specific areas of expertise and are designed to help our investees and other community nonprofits build their organizational capacity. last year our teams assisted over 40 nonprofit organizations in six critical areas: Board development, Business operations, Fund development, information technology, marketing and outcome Planning. the impact has been incredible!

Board development resource team la Cuna, a third-year sdsVP investee, requested assistance in building a more focused Board with more effective committees. la Cuna Board members and their executive director joined with the sdsVP Board development resource team in a structured dialogue and brainstorming session. as a result, the la Cuna Board has moved from meeting quarterly to meeting bi-monthly, they now appoint Committee Chairs based on expertise and skills, and they have added new criteria to the qualifications for new Board members.

Business operations resource teamthe Business operations resource team trained and mentored the accounting staff at angels Foster Family network, a third-year sdsVP investee. the team also helped angels find a new director of development and made executive director and Board-level presentations on budgeting, cash flow analysis and reading and understanding financial statements. as a result, angels is poised to enter their first post-sdsVP year with a strong understanding of their budget and cash flow requirements; accurate financial metrics with which to gauge their progress, report to their donors, and make decisions; and a new director of development, supported by an engaged and educated Board and a strong administrative staff. With these new tools, sdsVP is certain that angels will be increasingly successful as they grow their program in the future.

Fund development resource team these unprecedented economic times have put more pressure on fund-raising for nonprofit organizations in san diego. the Fund development resource team has been working diligently with numerous nonprofits to assist them with filling major funding gaps, researching and developing new areas of opportunity, and implementing strategies and tactics to produce revenue at the lowest possible costs. the team helped emeritus investee human

resource teamscreating impact development Foundation (hdF) fine-tune their fund-raising opportunities (introducing an annual golf tournament, for example) and

generate ideas to diversify their traditional revenue sources to better reflect today’s economic landscape. as we move into more prosperous economic times, organizations like hdF will be stronger and better suited to raise the funds for their important efforts.

inFormation technology resource teamthe information technology resource team connected with la Jolla music society (lJms) to perform an audit of their systems and processes. since lJms was experiencing a number of reliability problems, the sdsVP team met with the organization’s it vendor and primary users in each department of lJms. in addition, lJms used sdsVP’s Capacity assessment tool to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. after the interviews and assessment, the it resource team laid out a series of recommendations and suggested roadmaps toward process and technical improvements. as a result, lJms has been able to reduce the risk of data loss significantly, respond to major donors quickly and increase ticket sales.

marKeting resource teamthe marketing resource team worked closely with la Cuna to focus their marketing efforts in order to increase the number of foster families brought into the program. the team engaged the services of a local marketing analytics firm on a pro bono basis. the firm did a detailed workup of la Cuna families, which led to the development of an entirely new family outreach program based on key demographics and a focused set of marketing materials and specific events to recruit latino families. as a result, the number of prospective families in the pipeline has grown substantially, and la Cuna is also crafting a new fund-raising effort around their more targeted approach.

outcome planning resource teameveryone knows the mark of a successful business: profit. But how can we judge the success of a nonprofit? the outcome Planning team assists organizations in establishing three-year plans to achieve defined, measurable success. after answering the questions: What lasting change do we want to create and how will we know when we’ve succeeded? sdsVP investee, Community resource Center (CrC), decided to change their focus from beginning a capital campaign and developing transitional housing units to helping people in crisis establish a personal action plan for becoming safe and financially self-sufficient. as a result, CrC has discovered a treasure trove of new national funding and has become the “go-to” agency in san diego County for self-responsibility programs.
