Letter to Our Readers For those who may not remember all the St. Patrick’s Day festivities they attended or for those who wish they had done and seen more, we start this issue with a recap of all the celebrations. While New Jersey is most noted for its history, people and beautiful shores, this time of year, there is a large choice of festive events for all to participate in and enjoy. This month, we present you with a large selection of interesting activities ranging from music fests to food truck fiestas to wine and art festivals. In New Jersey, you can never get too “festive.” While out enjoying your choice of activities in our region, local bands are plentiful and worth seeking out too. Check out Alter Ego, which switches between electric and acoustic presentations. The band provides more than five decades of music to entertain you. Read more in this issue’s “Band Profile.” As always, within each issue, we like to introduce you to our Mixologist-of-the-Month. Meet Jennifer Nuss, who, after trying a stint in the “corporate world,” then at a dog-grooming salon, settled in the hospitality industry, now tending bar at Burlew’s Seafood & Steak in Keyport. Jennifer calls herself a “Michigan girl at heart,” but moved to NJ in 1998. She has been serving customers in local area bars for the past 10 years and states that she “loves her customers and listening to their stories. On the jocular side, our contributing columnist, Steve O would like you to meet and learn about Steve Trevelise, a man who juggles many endeavors: he’s a radio personality on NJ 101.5, runs a comedy club in Cherry Hill and still finds time to perform standup in the tri-state area over 150 nights a year. Hibernation is over -- trust Venues NJ to lead your April enjoyment!

Just a quick spin in a phone booth away from being able to play electric or acoustic shows, Alter Ego can cater their performance special for any occasion. Whether they’re rocking out electric or toned down acoustic, either face of this band can keep an audience entertained with over five decades of music in their arsenal.
Alter Ego has been playing since 2008 and though they started as a five-piece band, they now perform as a trio with the current lineup having been together for nearly two and a half years. There’s Dave Griffiths on guitar, Jon Sebastian Brice on bass, harmonica and vocals, and Wayne Parsons on drums, percussion, vocals and the cajón, a box-like percussion instrument that originated in Peru and is similar to a bongo drum. Parsons also serves as the band manager, marketer and booking agent.
Parsons came up with the name because when the band started he felt like Clark Kent turning into superman. “I have to wear a suit and tie during the week going into New
York City and at night I transform into a rock ‘n roll guy, so it’s like my alter ego,” he explains. And rock ‘n roll is certainly a far cry from their day jobs; Parsons is a jewelry designer, Griffiths is in the printing business and Brice runs a collectibles business.
Alter Ego is more than just the name as the band itself has two different sides, one electric and one acoustic -- depending on the occasion and size of the venue. The acoustic version of the band, called Acoustic Alter Ego or Alter Ego Lite, is when Griffiths switches to the acoustic guitar and Parsons plays the cajón, a real attention grabber because of how it imitates the sound of a full drum set, especially when played with a cowbell and small splash cymbals. Switching to acoustic allows for them to bring their volume down while still delivering the same great sound. This lets them play the smaller bars and lounges in the winter so they can keep entertaining all year long. “The acoustic guitar and the cajón as a percussion instrument rather than the drum set gives us that opportunity to play both types of venues and it’s a different kind of sound,” describes Parsons. “We still play the same songs that we do as an electric band, but we reinterpret them to fit into a lower volume acoustic kind of genre.”
Alter Ego performs a wide variety of songs, ranging from 1960s British and American rock to 90s grunge, to southern rock, reggae and current pop songs. “I would say we consider ourselves like an eclectic jukebox where we cover everything that is recognizable to our audience,” says Parsons. They even go as far as giving some songs themselves an alter ego, reinterpreting popular songs to give them a different sound. They can turn a rock song into a reggae song or one that is played primarily on the piano into one that works well on electric guitar.
Getting the crowd into their shows is a part of their act as well, sometimes having those in the audience come up and sing with
them. They’ll hold a mini audition during a set break, show someone the set list to see which songs they know and turn it into a big event for the audience.
Alter Ego plays all around Central Jersey, especially down the shore. They play some of their favorite spots four to six times a year including The Ivy League in Howell, the Lanes at Sea Girt, the EvenTide Grille in Sea Bright, the Ocean Place Tiki Bar in Long Branch and The Channel Club in Monmouth Beach. They can also be booked for private shows; they’ve done sweet 16s, birthday and anniversary parties, corporate networking events and backyard barbeques, tailor making a customized playlist for any engagement. They especially enjoy playing for charity as they have performed for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Care One senior
facilities and numerous private benefit shows.

Jennifer Nussby CLARE MARIE CELANO
Bartender Jennifer Nuss has worked in many different types of jobs, including the corporate world for JCP&L, and at a dog-grooming salon. But she says she always manages to find her way back to the bar/restaurant scene because ultimately, this is what makes her happy. Nuss, who has been tending bar at Burlew’s Seafood and Steak in Keyport since 2013, was born and raised in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Calling herself “a Michigan girl at heart” she ended up moving to New Jersey in 1998. “My bartending career started at the Kat Shack in Matawan. I worked there from 2004 through 2006 when it closed for renovation. I loved bartending there and even met my husband while I was working there,” she says, adding, “I was the first bartender and the last at the old Kat
Shack when it closed.” Nuss said she loves bartending and what she loves most about the job is her customers. “I love meeting all the people who come in and I enjoy listening to the stories they share with me,” Nuss relates. “I hear so many amazing stories from my customers and I learn so much all the time.” When asked what Nuss likes best about working at Burlew’s she was quick to quip, “What isn’t there to like about working at Burlew’s?” The view is inspiring to this bartender; Burlew’s overlooks the Raritan Bay and the famous NYC skyline. “I love being able to look out at the scenery and watch how beautifully it changes through each season,” she describes. Burlew’s is
so cozy and welcoming. I couldn’t ask for a better workplace.”
In her leisure time, Nuss loves spending time outdoors and with family and friends whenever
possible. She also has a passion for pooches. “Anyone who knows me will tell you how much I love animals, especially dogs. I love watching dogs for friends and family so I can give them the attention and love I would want for my own three dogs.”
Also on her list of favorite things to do is to travel back home to Michigan every July to spend time with her family and go boating in Lake Huron. As far as what the future holds for this bartender Nuss says, “I can see myself bartending for a long time. Who
knows what tomorrow will bring, but right now, I know I am happy.”

New Jersey is not only packed with people, cars, housing developments and strip malls -- we are happily abundant in days and weekends of celebrating a variety of things -- festivals grand and small are devoted to history, towns, hobbies and holidays.
The winter has gone, and days are milder and longer. The desire to be outdoors is instilled in almost all of us, and event organizers are well aware. Communities, associations, and charitable foundations work year-long to craft family-style events with something for everyone.
When one thinks of a festival, one conjures happy faces, jovial laughter, and a “to heck with my diet today” attitude. And there’s great reason -- festivals are not only perfect for families, but are great for dates and groups of friends. Festooned with food booths, crafts, entertainment and colorful sights, there’s always much to explore and do.
The warm-weather months are full of all styles of festivals throughout New Jersey, so finding some to attend is easy. Of note, many seek vendors, and if you have a business that fits, you may want to participate.
Here are some of the numerous festivals -- great and small -- occurring from April through June, courtesy of http://www.visitnj.org/nj/events/festivals (descriptions are slightly edited). For many more festive events, we encourage you to “favorite” this page!

O N B R O A D W A Y Her Majesty will see you now.
That’s the implicit — and for royalty-worshiping Anglophiles, thrilling — promise of “The Audience,” Peter Morgan’s history-skimming chat show about a monarch and her prime ministers, now playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. Yes, that most private of highly public figures, Queen Elizabeth II, is currently receiving visitors on Broadway. What’s more, her celebrated majesty is being embodied by the same majestic celebrity who won an Academy Award for portraying her on screen: Helen Mirren, who picked up a mantelpiece’s worth of prizes for playing Elizabeth in the 2006 film “The Queen.” Even if she’s not the real royal deal, this is still about as close as most of us are going to get to a cozy tête-à-tête with the best loved of the regal Windsors.“The Audience” not only provides the illusion of observing, firsthand, how Queen
A Review
Elizabeth operates behind the scenes, as she meets with British prime ministers from Winston Churchill to David Cameron in weekly sessions of which only the two participants know what really happened. As one of Elizabeth’s prime ministers tells her, with a mixture of exasperation and admiration, “You have a way of saying nothing and yet making yourself perfectly clear.” The show also allows the smashing Ms. Mirren to demonstrate her quick-change virtuosity in becoming the queen at different ages, from 1951 to the present, before our very eyes. Those transformations, accomplished with sleights of hand worthy of a master magician, are probably the most entertaining and satisfying aspects of “The Audience.” It is somehow deeply reassuring to see Ms. Mirren, who turns 70 this year, step back in time as Elizabeth and persuade us that she is whatever age
she wants to be. That projection is fond, formulaic and most respectful. As we watch Elizabeth in scenes that leapfrog back and forth through the decades, she emerges as homey, honest, dog-loving, constantly aware of the immense obligations of her royal role and — since this is the world of drawing-room (or state room) theater — rather witty. “For the most part, I’ve found my ministers to be very human,” Elizabeth says to a nervous John Major in her first scene. Then, a beat, and she adds, face to the audience, “All too human.” Many of the prime ministers here unburden themselves of their secret anxieties and fears in their policy sessions with the queen, as if she were a mother confessor. And the queen, in turn, unbends with the politicians she likes just enough to allow them to intuit where her real interests
lie, which are always on the side of the
angels, those who occupy the middle-left wing of heaven. Queen Elizabeth, you see, is one of us, or as much of one of us as she can be given her extraordinary upbringing and imprisoning public role. The compulsively watchable Ms. Mirren brings out the humor and the pathos in this contradiction. To remind us of just what the queen has sacrificed, we are introduced to her as she was as a girl The Young Elizabeth has a rebellious streak and a slight resentment regarding the duty-bound future that awaits her. Given a chance to escape, she could turn into Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday.” The older Elizabeth, who speaks consolingly to her younger self, has erased the recalcitrant girl who was. Well, not quite.

Club Haus:• 1 oz blackberry liqueur • 4-5 oz club soda Haus is the German spelling of the word house and this drink honors all the international golf players who have mastered the game. Along with competing in the Masters Tournament itself, this normally solo endeavor becomes a team sport every two years when a select group of the best of the best of these players square off in the alternating biennial Ryder’s Cup and President’s Cup competitions. The Ryder Cup pits an American team
against their European counterparts and the Presidents Cup matches the rest of the world minus Europe with their American golfing rivals.
Bobby Jones Cocktail Recipe:• 1 1/2 oz brandy • 1/2 oz Crème de cacao ( chocolate bean liqueur, dark ) • 1/4 tsp grenadine • lemon juice Fill a cocktail shaker with 4-5 ice cubes. Add brandy, creme de cacao and grenadine. Squeeze in fresh lemon juice and shake. Strain into a chilled tumbler.
Arnold Palmer Drink Recipe:• 2 oz iced tea • 2 oz lemonade Arnold Palmer has donned the green jacket three times as the winner of the Masters Golf Tournament and this was a favorite drink he frequently ordered. Having a mocktail on hand is a must for any gathering and if your home bar is hosting a golf themed party then this non-alcoholic cocktail matches the occasion to a ‘tee’.
Country Club Cooler:• 2 oz dry vermouth • 1/2 tsp grenadine (pomegranate simple syrup) • 3-4 oz soda, seltzer or sparkling water • 1 twist lemon peel • 1 spiral orange peel Augusta National Golf Club, host of the Masters Tournament, may be the quintessential private golf country club in America. Founded by the
legendary amateur player Bobby Jones along with Clifford Roberts who later became chairman of the club. Jones also helped design the course with Alister MacKenzie. Pour the grenadine syrup and half of the carbonated water into a collins glass and stir. Add ice cubes and vermouth. Top off with seltzer and stir again with a long bar spoon. Garnish with the orange spiral and the lemon peel twist cut with a channel knife so the end hangs out over the rim of the glass similar to preparing a horse’s neck cocktail.

Hole-In-One Cocktail:• 1 3/4 oz Scotch whisky • 3/4 oz sweet vermouth • 1/2 tsp lemon juice • 1 dash orange bitters A betting man would lay odds on masters of the game being able to ace the tee shot over other professional golfers and certainly amateur duffers. There have been 73 holes-in-one in the history of the actual contest, with a record five aces shot during the 2002 Masters Tournament.Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Shake thoroughly and strain into a chilled glass.
Hole-In-One Shooter:• 3/4 oz melon liqueur • 1/4 oz apple brandy • 2 dashes cream Tradition has the player scoring an ace required to buy a round of drinks for everyone in the clubhouse although many favor just buying rounds for the group they were playing with since it can get pretty pricey. Celebrating shooting that hole in one with your golfing foursome at your own home bar is truly priceless. Gene Sarazen hit the “shot heard round the world” during the 1935 Masters, holing out from the fairway on the par 5 15th for a double eagle. While not a hole-in-one, that’s a golf shot.

Steve TreveliseOnce again, through the kindness of Suzy Yengo of “Catch a Rising Star” I
was introduced to Steve Trevelise, most recently known for his work on NJ 101.5. If you think you have a heavy schedule think again. Steve is the on air personality every Monday through Thursday from 7 PM -11 PM. On Fridays he can be found at his comedy club in Cherry Hill and just to round it all out he can be seen performing all over the tri-state area 150—200 more nights a year.
As exhausting as all this sounds, the married father of two young sons also spends plenty of time with his family.
Venues-NJ: You’re a born-and-bred Jersey guy who worked in Philly. Before radio and now your own comedy club, Sarcasm Comedy in Cherry Hill, how did the ride begin? What gave you the push to get into comedy?
Steve Trevelise: Back in 1986, when I was doing updates on The Howard Stern Show on WYSP in Philadelphia, I started hosting comedy shows on Friday nights at a place called The Comedy Works in Philadelphia through the radio station. Among those who I brought on were Bill Hicks who’s now the “Patron Saint” of my show and Carol Liefer. I really enjoyed hanging out and talking with the comics to see where they and their comedy were coming from.
In 2000, when I was part of the ALICE 1045 morning show, we had Miss Pennsylvania Melissa Jeka in the studio and we at the
morning show decided to put on a “beauty pageant” for her. I did standup for my “Talent Competition” and afterward was offered a regular spot on our Friday shows called “The Comedy Stylings of Steve Trevelise.” Our consultant at the time felt it would be good for the show if I could take that into the local clubs, and Andy Scarpati whom I hosted for in the 80s was kind enough to put me in one of his locations every Friday night. In 2004 I was offered the job of “House Emcee” at “Catch A Rising Star” in the Princeton Hyatt and eventually became
G e n e r a l Manager of the club; in 2010, I opened SARCASM in the Cherry Hill Crowne Plaza which I now use for special events along with the Tavern On The Lake in Hightstown, The Broadway Theatre in Pittman NJ, The Millstone Performing Arts Center in Millstone among other venues.
V-NJ: How did your friends and family react to this gamble of trying the comedy thing?
ST: Very supportive. Before comedy, I had my own mobile DJ company which gave me the experience of being in front of people, plus there’s a synergy to comedy and being on the radio.
V-NJ: You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in comedy and sports. Any particular piece of advice or something you learned from any or all of them?
ST: I’ve been told so many things by so many people and I take it all to heart. The best advice I could give to anyone trying to do anything that involves marketing your personality, be it comedy, radio or anything is to take the time to really get to know yourself and your personality and stay true to that. There’s only one you and
that’s a good thing!
V-NJ: While radio and your club keep you plenty busy, anything else coming up that you’d like to share?
ST: Isn’t that enough? I just keep doing what I’m doing for as long as God will me let do it.
Be sure to follow Steve on NJ 101.5 and you can find out where he’ll be performing live at his web
site, SteveTrevelise.com.

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.
Were you “the funny one” growing up?
I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.
Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?
I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago
to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.
Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?
The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.
Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?
I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

Fundraiser To Help SPECIAL OLYMPICS
What: Jersey Shore Relay MarathonWhen: Saturday, April 18th, 2015Where: Asbury Park Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJContact: Angelo Gingerelli at [email protected]
About Comedy on Cookman: In an effort to contribute to RunAPalooza’s mission of raising money for Special Olympics, the “Comedy on Cookman” team has set up a fundraising page. http://register.boardwalkrelay.org/fundraising/fundraise.aspx?event=28026&fundraiser=12566
Any donation will be greatly appreciated and everybody who donates and attends “Comedy on Cookman” on 4/18 will be entered to win prizes at the show.
“Comedy on Cookman” is a monthly stand-up comedy show at The ShowRoom Cinema in the heart of downtown Asbury Park. Every month three up-and-coming comics (usually with Jersey Shore roots) perform solo sets and then come back to the stage for the “5 Rounds Panel Discussion” where they debate current events and pop culture with input from the audience
FamilyThe basic unit of society; a group of people united by certain convictions. A group of people deriving from a common stock.
During the past month, there was a great deal of conviviality with all the parades and Irish celebrations. I had occasion to enjoy many such gatherings. One thought that stayed with me during all that time was the feeling of “family.”
Being with friends or acquaintances (including those friendly souls just encountered) puts one in a mood or atmosphere of being at a “family” gathering or celebration.
Within the hospitality industry, when you ask a person which bar / restaurant he or she enjoys and why, the answer will often be “because it feels like family” or “they make you feel like family.”
When an owner/proprietor is describing and/or promoting his or her venue, the phrases such as “family-friendly” or “offers a family atmosphere” are used to attract customers.
On the other side, when you ask an employee of an establishment why he or she enjoys working there, quite often the response will be, “It’s like a family.”
Family. It’s a simple word with many meanings and one that evokes strong emotions. It gives a feeling of unity, strength in numbers and security. It bespeaks comfort and warmth. The meaning it symbolizes and the feeling it provides should be kept in mind when trying to capture that sense of commitment to each other whether serving others or being served.
