IntegrityISSUE 8 / 2014

Aligning your thoughts, feelings and actionsComing into winter I have explored what integrity means to me, the impact when people are acting out of integrity and I’ve curiously noticed how in-flow my life is when I’m operating from a place of 100% integrity.

Trust and respect are crucial factors in any relationship. When you look at the core of all business, it’s built on relationships. Therefore the foundation of all successful businesses is integrity, This is why I chose Integrity as this season’s theme. I see it as the foundation for all successful businesses, all successful relationships and now realise it applies to creating a life you love. I’ve included a couple of powerful exercises in this issue to help you live more in flow and continue to create a life you love.

In our Businesswomen Panel I’ve asked four of our Venus Regional Managers what Integrity means to them and how they see it contributing to the success of our members. We’ve featured Janine Tait, Founder and Managing Director of Janine Tait Group on our cover. Janine lives her life and operates her business with the highest of integrity. Her business is a reflection of her beliefs, where she truly knows beauty comes from the inside.

We’ve partnered with some smart businesswomen as Venus Business Experts this year. Wendy shares tips on choosing to bring on an employee or a contractor. Mary and Shalini remind us of the importance of honesty when it comes to applying for insurance. Annette and Dawn highlight the differences when engaging a professional to support you with the money side of the business. Another level of integrity is putting your health as a priority and we’ve asked Nicola to share six strength training myths to help demystify this important area of keeping you healthy.

I remind myself during these colder months that one of the reasons I’m in business is for the freedom it provides me. As I write this editorial on a wintery Sunday morning I acknowledge that I love this freedom. That the Friday afternoon I took off for ‘wellness time’ is part of the journey, as much as working on a Sunday morning is.

Wishing you a playful and in-flow winter.Loving the ride

BEAUTY from the INSIDE OUT

Janine Tait has been a beauty therapist for 30 years and was one of the first people in New Zealand involved in holistic beauty. She was introduced to it 20 years ago by a naturopath

in Australia, Janice Smith, who knew the importance that nutrition plays in health and beauty since she started consulting in 1968. Janine now educates and supports her clients around this understanding that beauty comes not only from what we put on our skin, but also from our lifestyle and the food we choose to put inside our bodies.

Article by Renata MathewsonPhotography by Logan Davey

Page 7: Venus Magazine Issue 8

Janine is the owner of Lox Spa in Tauranga, and the creator behind the Bestow Beauty range of products. With Lox, she and her team are able to provide an environment of total care for clients, offering a combination of body and skincare services, products and programmes. With Bestow Beauty, Janine is able to share “a philosophy of skincare, made up of exquisite rituals and functional foods lovingly created to support your inner health and outer beauty.”

“Many beauty therapists treat the skin topically, from the outside. But the skin is fed from within and it’s a reflection of what is going on internally in our bodies,” she explains. “Our skin health is affected by our lifestyle – things like the amount of sleep we get, how much we exercise, and our stress levels. It is also affected by our diet and what we put into our bodies.”

With this holistic approach to beauty and skin health, Janine works with her clients to help treat skin care problems such as rosacea, cystic acne, eczema, and skin congestion. She supports clients through treatments that include changes to the skin care products they’re using, what they’re eating, and where appropriate, she encourages them to look at things like exercise, meditation and pranayama breathing exercises.

“All of this is my way of paying it forward.

I’d like to think that in some small way, I’ll leave

the world in a better way”

Page 8: Venus Magazine Issue 8

www.venusnetwork.co.nz /p 8

Janine recognises that while New Zealand women are very lucky in the sense that we can be and do anything we desire, we also have a lot of responsibilities. Hence, we often don’t look after ourselves properly and we consistently get told by the beauty industry that if we spend a lot of money on expensive anti-aging products we’ll become more beautiful. She thinks of herself as her clients’ skin coach and explains, “It’s not about being perfect. It’s about looking after ourselves and all the other aspects that make us healthy.”

Janine attributes her “you can do anything” attitude to her upbringing, having two sisters and a mother who was a strong matriarch in the family who went back to work while having children. On the other hand, Janine also knows that there are females in other countries who aren’t as fortunate. She is involved with the Cambodia Charitable Trust, an organisation her sister set up to increase the number of girls completing primary and secondary education in Cambodia. “By keeping girls in school, we increase their chances of gaining independence and staying in their communities, rather than being taken into the deplorable world of human trafficking.”

You get a real sense from Janine that giving back to the community is a strong driver behind who she is, as a woman and as a business person. As well as running her businesses and being involved with the Trust, she devotes a lot of time to educating and training other beauty therapists in the practices of holistic beauty. “All of this is my way of paying it forward. I’d like to think that in some small way I’ll leave the world in a better way. If you can positively influence a young woman, you can help her change her community – and maybe even the world.”

Janine’s dedication to teaching women that their lifestyle affects their beauty and skin health has seen her publish the beautiful Bestow Natural Food Journal, filled with recipes to nourish the body and the skin. It is a collaborative project she created with Sheryl Nicholson, a fellow foodie, food photographer and designer. Janine believes strongly in working together with like-minded people and believes that living in integrity with your values and building relationships based on these values are the keys to business success.

Page 9: Venus Magazine Issue 8

Integrity, for many of us, means being honest, having strong morals and ethics, being sincere and truthful. Often we hear people talk about their moral compass – the force inside you that guides you on the right path. It centres on consistency – of values, beliefs, values, and ultimately, actions – regardless of what others may think. Janine is a testament to this, believing so strongly in holistic beauty 20 years ago and knowing that staying true to her beliefs would guide her on the right path in business and in life.

Janine is part of the new Venus Business Teams programme that’s about to be launched. “My business has reached a level where it’s important to have other business women to share experiences with. It is also valuable to have some accountability. It is easy to come to work and do what I feel like and what I am good at rather than what would be most beneficial to my business”.

LIVING your LIFE in FLOW

LIVING your LIFE in FLOW

My first introduction to the power behind the word integrity was in my first personal development training through Landmark Education – over 15 years ago. From what I recall, integrity was simply being honest with yourself and others and doing what you say you’re going to do. At the time it was a revelation to me, that honouring my word held such power in having me feel happy, while building trust in my relationships.

This past year I’ve discovered a deeper meaning for the word, as I’ve explored my own purpose, Venus’s mission and my connection to the greater consciousness. My earlier introduction to integrity involved an alignment with what I thought, and what I did.

EVOLUTIONARY INTEGRITYThe introduction to this deeper, more holistic view of integrity has come more recently through the work I’ve done with Amanda Fleming. Evolutionary integrity is when your head (thoughts), your heart (feelings) and your gut (actions) are in alignment.

LIVING IN FLOWWhen you are in integrity you are in the flow of life. In this flow the most amazing things come your way. It’s a flow

of money, relationships, ideas, opportunities and insights. I didn’t used to connect the dots between telling a lie, no matter how small or just to myself, and what was coming into my life – needy relationships, no money, drama and unhappiness.

I’ve now connected the dots and know that being aware of my thoughts and the beliefs they stem from, acknowledging my feelings and sharing them and taking the right action has me be in-flow and divinely connected.

INTEGRITY IS NOT JUDGEMENT I was told integrity was about right-wrong, good-bad, should- shouldn’t, not good enough-good enough, guilty-not guilty. And I wondered why having an integrity conversation felt so uncomfortable. After working with the talented coach Denise Simons from Relate Coaching here in Tauranga, I’ve learned what integrity is and a powerful process to clean up my integrity, supporting me to live in-flow more often than not.

Integrity is the foundation to having power in your life. It’s a framework to look through which shows workability, how something serves you and how useful it is to you.

THE IMPACT WHEN YOU ARE OUT OF INTEGRITYThere is always an impact on yourself and on others when you are not in integrity. This can include feeling stuck, confused, stressed, overwhelmed, distracted, and resentful. You may also self-sabotage, be in reaction mode, knee-jerk, be off-purpose and impatient. People experience you as draining, selfish and needy. THE IMPACT WHEN YOU ARE IN INTEGRITYLikewise there is an impact on yourself and others when you are in integrity; you feel confident, blissful, energised, inspired, happy, connected to source, connected to others, blessed, productive and resilient. People experience you as trustworthy, likeable and enthusiastic.

ACKNOWLEDGE, ACCEPT & ACTWhen any of the above negative feelings are present, check in with yourself to see if something is out of alignment – out of integrity. Check to see that what you’re thinking and believing is in alignment with what you’re feeling, communicating and doing. When you uncover something that is not in alignment ACKNOWLEDGE where you are out. Whether this is to yourself or to a trusted friend. Then ACCEPT it, be kind to yourself and remove the judgement that can come from being out of integrity. Then ACT, decide how you are going to clean up your integrity and take action.

You can learn to recognise when you are out of integrity. By noticing how you feel about something or someone or yourself. Now that you are aware of the feelings that may come up from being out, you can start getting back into integrity more often and start reaping the rewards of a life lived in-flow. YOUR RESULTS ALWAYS MIRROR YOUR INTEGRITYThis is great news. It means that you can look at any area of your life and if it’s not as you want it, you can check in and ask what is out of alignment. If you are working towards achieving something and it just isn’t happening, I’m proposing that there is something not in alignment between your thoughts/beliefs, your feelings, your communication and your actions. THRIVING RELATIONSHIPSWorking relationships based on trust need integrity as the foundation. To set up this foundation for a thriving relationship be responsible for expectations. I have recently learned the upset one can experience when expectations are not made clear from the start of a working relationship. When starting a new business relationship – whether it’s with a team member, a supplier or a client – share what you expect of them and ask what they expect of you. BE IN INTEGRITY IN VENUSWithin Venus you have the opportunity to grow a network of trusted referral alliances, meet trusted suppliers and build a sales force supporting you to grow your business. All of this requires a high level of integrity. Your commitment to being in integrity in all areas of your life including Venus will provide you with a flow of ideas, support, new clients and opportunities.

MY INTEGRITY CHECk-INHere is a powerful set of questions that Denise Simons from www.relatecoaching.co.nz shared with me, and is part of the amazing work she does with her coaching clients. I’ve shared them here, with permission as a powerful way for you to get back in integrity. Each week I sit down with this form and do an integrity check-in. If you would like any support with this, I highly recommend Denise for the work she does with integrity.

New Zealand Home Loans was established in 1996 to help inform home owners about how to make their money work in their best interests rather than the banks.

By having their mortgage with New Zealand Home Loans its clients have saved over $27 million in interest costs and taken years off their mortgage term. Some of this is achieved through the structure of the loan but additional gains get made by the initial and ongoing support of the New Zealand Home Loans consultant and the company’s unique online software called ‘debtnav’ that the clients can use to track daily progress.

“We see financial knowledge and support as being critical for home owners to be able to get ahead with their personal finances”, says Mark Collins, CEO. “For most Kiwi’s their home is their main investment and also monthly expense so if you are able to get the repayment of this working efficiently then you are able to make huge gains even without necessarily paying any more each month.”

With over 72 offices from Whangarei to Dunedin, New Zealand Home Loans has grown rapidly to now be one of the largest non-bank home loan providers while still being fully New Zealand owned and operated.

This success was recognised last year by the company getting two Deloittes Fast 50 awards and three Waikato Business Excellence Awards including the Supreme Award as business of the year.

A LIFE OF VALUE AND CONTRIBUTION

I moved to New Zealand in 2002. My first business was an insurance company for women called “Pink Insurance”. It became New Zealand’s most successful woman’s insurance company. I also founded the ‘Women’s Charitable Trust’. I sold my company Pink Insurance in 2010, to gain further insurance experience in the corporate world.

Aegis Life Insurances is my pride and joy, since I started it in 2012. It was conceived (like most great Kiwi idea’s) in a car overlooking the picturesque Mairangi Bay, looking out over the ocean on the North Shore.

One of the things I love most about running my own business is looking after my clients claims personally and making sure the claims are paid in full which makes a huge difference in my client’s lives. One of my challenges initially was finding the right group of business owners to network with and sending my message out. After attending numerous networking groups and talking to many business owners I came across Venus. There I found passionate and lovely women who helped me grow my business and take it to the next level. Being part of Venus has given my business a clear sense of direction. I’m so grateful for and have learned allot from all the businesswomen who have beautiful stories to tell.

My favourite quote is “High on the wall, in the castle of my dreams of success, hangs the picture of what I want to be. Always keep that picture hanging there. See myself where I intend to be.”

Success to me is leading a life that makes me feel proud of myself. Living a life with true values and applying those values in my personal and professional life.

My advice to anyone starting out in business - Define your core values and set your business around those, make sure every step you take is in line with your values, that way you will always have a harmonious and honest business.

TEACHING TIMELESS CONCEPTS A mid-life crisis and ill health encouraged me to rethink life; I wanted to do something I enjoyed which was practical and helped others. Then some friends asked me to share with them how to dress well on a small budget and Personal Style Limited was born.

I help women understand their personal style so they can feel confident, shop quickly & easily, and create a versatile wardrobe. I teach timeless concepts that last a lifetime and work anywhere.

I love the variety of running my business. Seeing women get a-ha moments is fantastic. I love being able to empower others with practical skills and being part of their journey.

One of my biggest challenges has been staying clear on my business vision; doing things differently and being okay with that. I recommend meeting face to face when exploring business possibilities and planning joint ventures. Be flexible and willing to try new things; accept good judgement comes from experience.

One of my favourite quotes “Vanity has nothing to do with wanting to look your best. A good image conveys self-respect and self-esteem. When you treat yourself well, others can only follow.” by Mary Spillane.

I’ve been a member of Venus from the very beginning; it has provided real connections and friendships, helpful business pointers and education, practical information and support as well as referrals!

Success to me is when a client doesn’t need me anymore! That’s the same with my children - now adults. I’m enjoying a whole new season; time with my hubby, loving my grandkids and looking forward to new challenges.

If I could have given myself advice when I was just starting out, it would be to think bigger and trust myself more.

Selling like a superstar

More and more people need to sell, to develop business and to win new customers. When we hear the word ‘sales’, we often think of our own experiences of being sold too. Let’s face it, no one likes to be sold to or talked at, with some high pitched, super charged verbal barrage and a ‘never take no’ for an answer crescendo.

This approach finishes with us running a mile and feeling irritated at the lack of interest the person showed in us, our needs and not to mention the sheer waste of our time.

After years in both sales roles and as a sales trainer to many business owners, I’ve learned that the most successful way to sell is to view selling as serving. Add to this mind-set a few key tools and you’ll find you start to enjoy sales conversations. To serve is to render assistance; be of use; help. With this mind-set you approach your sales conversations with an energy of generosity, curiosity and boldness.

I’ve discovered that with this mind-set, mixed with a little courage and practice, you can become an excellent problem solver and service provider, rather than a pushy sales woman. You can remain true to who you are while serving those you enjoy working with.

Page 17: Venus Magazine Issue 8

5 key strategies to help you sell like a superstar

BE KNOWLEDGEABLEKNOW WHAT YOU ARE SELLING AND TO WHOM

Building long-term profitable relationships depends on potential customers feeling you understand their world. Make sure you know your marketing message and you know why your niche market will benefit from what you are selling. Most importantly know who you are talking to, know their business and how you can specifically help them.

BE GENEROUSSHIFT YOUR FOCUS TO BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

Rather than concentrating on making a sale or gaining a new client, focus on getting to know people and building relationships. Find out how you can help people. Find out what they need. The talented Patricia Fripp has it right when she states “You don’t close a sale; you open a relationship if you want to build a long-term, successful enterprise”.

BE CURIOUSASK QUESTIONS

Ask intelligent, relevant, open ended questions and listen more than you talk. There are two key things this will do in a conversation; it will help to confirm whether or not your prospect is a good fit for your product or service and it will help you identify where their most pressing needs or problems are. You can then tailor your conversation to provide solutions to match their need specifically.

BE BOLDASK FOR THE SALE

Learn how to CLOSE the sale, ask for the money, and get the commitment! This is where many of my team really struggled, as do many small business owners. If what you are offering can serve the person you are talking with, then asking whether they will purchase from you can help them make the decision to buy from you or not.

One

Two

Three

Four

I learned that we rely on a sales person to help us make up our mind. Think about the last thing you bought where you required the help of the sales person, appreciated their service and knowledge and where they helped you reach a decision whether you needed the product/service.

When all is said and done and they’ve received information, free sessions or free samples. their questions have been answered and they still say “I want to think about it” – remember this is not a no. Make sure you follow up. Ask them for a day and time that would be convenient to get back to them and do it!

BE REALNO MEANS NOT RIGHT FOR THEM

Remember that a complete outright no isn’t a personal rejection. It simply means it is just not right for them at that time. How about celebrating the times you hear a no, because they always get you closer to your next yes.

We worked out that an average sales person needed to have ten sales conversations to get two yes’s. A better than average sales person gets three yes’s from the same ten conversations. Know your average and see the no’s as winning your way to your next yes.

Have fun, remember the more sales conversations you have the more comfortable and confident you will feel so practice, practice, practice.

You have worked very hard and nurtured your business carefully and finally you have got to the next big step of taking on someone to help you. This can be another steep learning curve for the uninitiated. This step can assist your business to soar or cause it to stumble.

New Zealand employment law is not easy to navigate your way around. Make sure you stop and carefully prepare before making a knee jerk decision of offering a person a role within your business.

CONTRACTOR OR EMPLOYEE?

Do you want an independent contractor or an employee? If you engage an independent contractor you do not have obligations such as ACC levies, annual holiday pay, sick leave, bereavement leave, and extra obligations if your team work on public holidays. Furthermore, you will not have problems with the person taking a personal grievance against your business, if you terminate the arrangement for any reason.

CONTRACTORS ARE TREATED IN A CERTAIN WAY

However, like all things in business, it is not quite so straight forward. If you engage independent contractors (“ICs”) to undertake work for your business, you need to make sure you have the correct documents in place and that you treat your ICs in a certain way.

CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR CHOICES

If you do not do this, your ICs may be deemed to be employees by the IRD or the Employment Relations Authority. If this happens the consequences can be severe. For example your business may be deemed to be liable for backdated PAYE, ACC levies, holiday pay, payment for public holidays, sick leave, bereavement leave, etc. In some situations the amount of money involved can be significant and can be large enough to cripple a business for years.

Another issue with ICs is that there is a limit in the type of direction you may be able to give them and how much control you have over them. While this may suit some businesses, it may not suit others.

SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE

While taking the next step of engaging people to assist your business may appear fraught with difficulty, it need not be so. Make sure you seek professional assistance and set up robust, compliant documents and systems before engaging any assistance, and you will find taking the next big step is not that big after all.

I have set out a checklist for you to consider in determining whether you need an IC or an employee.

Q & A WITH VENUS MEMBER AND OWNER OF JO-ANNA’S ATTIC, HUTT VALLEY I love hearing about people being able to turn their beloved hobby into the way they pay their bills. I know myself that being self-employed is an extremely hard road that many people don’t survive, it’s definitely not the easy option to enrol the general public into exchanging your time and expertise for their money.

Most people only see an end product and don’t think about everything that goes into running your own business.

That’s why you have to show the best possible quality and customer service alongside your beautiful products and Jo-Anna’s Attic is one small business that I see does their very best to provide exactly that. KIA ORA JO-ANNA COULD YOU BRIEFLY TELL ME WHAT TREASURES CAN BE FOUND AT JO-ANNA’S ATTIC?Handmade children’s decor; quilts, baby blankets, bunting, dribble bibs and accessories; swim bags, drawstring bags (I call them ‘thingy bags because they hold all kinds of things) and homework bags.

WHAT MAKES JO-ANNA’S ATTIC UNIQUE?All of my products are handmade and I think what makes them different is the way I put the fabrics together – the colours and patterns I chose

HOW DID JO-ANNA’S ATTIC START?I was pregnant with my first son and wanted him to have a really special blanket – but I wasn’t going to spend $80 on a mass produced fleece blanket! I thought maybe I could make something a bit nicer that had special meaning. WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOU?On my website www.joannasattic.co.nz, and Facebook www.facebook.com/joannasttic, in my shop on Main Street Upper Hutt and Etsy.

WHO NEEDS YOU?Parents, Grandparents, Aunties, people with friends who have kids… anyone looking to buy special gifts for the children in their lives.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?I love creating and designing my products – envisioning how they will look and putting colours together.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING MOST ON YOUR DAYS OFF?I enjoy going to markets, hanging around the house playing and visiting with friends.

WHY DID YOU JOIN VENUS NETWORK?I was building my business at home on my own and I thought it would be great to be around other women who were doing the same thing. I wanted to learn from them and to be inspired by them.

WHAT GROWTH HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED SINCE JOINING VENUS?I’ve grown tremendously as a businesswoman. Before joining Venus, I used to look at what I do as a hobby, and I didn’t really classify myself as a businesswoman per say. Being around so many other business owners and businesswomen, I see that we all have the same challenges. I see how I am meeting those challenges and breaking through them alongside my fellow Venus women.

It is great to celebrate successes with them and I see us all as equals, regardless of the business we are in.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW VENUS MEMBERS?I would say definitely do the RAVEs! Not only will you get to know your members better and develop a stronger network, you will learn so much from their experiences. It is also a great opportunity to let them know who exactly can use your product or service.

It is virtually impossible to be in the same room as Lesley Simpson

and Monique Bradley and not smile, laugh and completely forget

about anything that may be worrying you. These two women have

found a productive way to mix business with pleasure, and their

enthusiasm and passion is easily contagious.

Both members of Venus Takapuna, Lesley and Monique have been

coming up with unique and creative ways to attract people to their

businesses, and the collaboration is paying off in ways they hadn’t

initially thought of.

The word collaborate means to work together – co labor. However

Lesley and Monique don’t see it as work. They’ve been sharing ideas,

laughs and the occasional glass of wine – to get the creative juices

flowing, they are quick to point out – since they met almost a year

ago.

Tell us a bit about your businesses.

Lesley: Berkeley Takapuna is a four-screen boutique cinema with

licensed theatres and bar and 3D capability. www.venusnetwork.

co.nz/profile/Cinema

Monique: At Starlight Media House we help tell the story of

businesses through creating content, unique marketing ideas and

training clients to communicate their story more effectively.

www.venusclubs.co.nz/profile/moniquebradley

What prompted you to find a company to partner with?

Lesley: I was looking for new and different ways of marketing movies

and attracting customers.

Monique: Working with Lesley has been a great alliance as she sees

our unique abilities to share the stories of her events in a different

way, creating hype through social media and resulting in a positive

public response.

What are some of the ways you work together?

We’ve now worked

together on a few

different events where

Berkeley Takapuna has

had something special

happening. And we have

captured video footage

which has been used for

social media.

What exactly does collaboration mean to you?

Lesley: Working together with people or businesses that complement

you and your talents or needs.

Monique: It means understanding your strengths and knowing

how you and another business can complement and enhance

each other’s activities. It’s about understanding that the combined

outcome has to be mutually beneficial for both parties.

Do you see traits in each other that you don’t have yourself that help with the collaboration?

Lesley: Yes, and that’s what makes us work so well together. Monique

is great at organising and getting things done. And she is media

savvy and knows how to make the most of the exposure we get from

each event.

Monique: Absolutely. Lesley is the most amazing deal maker – she

can pull things out of thin air and create a concept. She’s great at

strategic thinking and I’m better at the tactics, at the doing.

Page 27: Venus Magazine Issue 8

What advice would you give to other women in Venus who were thinking about collaborating?

• Make sure you are on the same wavelength and that you get on

personally

• find a business that will complement yours

• Begin by asking how you can help each other - how could this

collaboration serve me and serve the person I’m speaking with?

• Start with the end in mind by being clear of the overall vision

and outcome of the collaboration

• focus on having clear and honest communication

• Know what you expect and what’s expected of you - set

parameters and check them regularly

• Have fun!

What part has Venus played in your business story?

Lesley: Venus is a great way of not just meeting likeminded

businesswomen, but it is an excellent way of making friends. I have

met many ladies and business owners who I have been able to work

alongside. The rAVes are a great way to learn more about each other

and the businesses they run. Many of the women I have come across

in the Takapuna group are a real inspiration to me.

Monique: Venus has helped me find confidence as a businesswoman

and to understand that my unique area of expertise has value. every

fortnight I’m inspired by hearing other women’s stories of success,

which in turn inspires me to want to do better.

What advice would you give to new Venus members about getting the most of their membership?

Lesley: rAVe, rAVe, rAVe! They are so important and a great way to

learn more about other Venus members. Also, attend other group

meetings and network as much as you can. Have an attitude of “how

can I help you?”

Monique: rAVe as much as possible with everyone you can. You

never know a person or their business until you spend time sharing

a coffee (or a wine!) and really getting to know them. Approach

everyone – even if you think their business may not be a good fit

with yours. You never quite know where your rAVe will take you.

The theme of this issue of the magazine is “integrity”. What does integrity mean to you?

Lesley: It’s about being who you are, standing by your decisions and

learning from them. Integrity means sticking to your values and

making sure you live each day like it’s your last. I don’t worry about

tomorrow. I don’t worry about yesterday. I love what I do and I know

how important it is to have fun – every day!

Monique: Integrity to me is about living a life true to your own values

and beliefs – and you can choose them. They drive our daily choices

and for me create an internal compass. It’s about following that

compass and living in flow.

When I was younger I was asked in a job interview what integrity

meant to me. I didn’t actually know what the word meant, so I

said, “Well, it’s got the word ‘grit’ in it so it must be about being

determined and following your beliefs.”

6 Strength Training Myths BY NICOLA REILLY, FOREVERFIT.TV There are many myths around women and strength training. I wanted to dispel some of the most common ones to show how important strength training is for you and your health.

Myth #1: Women shouldn’t lift heavy or they’ll get bulky

Here’s the truthPutting on muscle is hard work. Lifting weights a few times a week to tone and strengthen your muscles is not going to make you bulky. In order to get big and bulky those women train some serious hours, eat some serious amounts of food and supplements and have spent years trying to add muscle to their frames.

Women don’t naturally build muscle as easily as men either, because our hormones are set up different. By lifting weights you will not get bulky, but instead you will build a strong lean body, increase your bone density, improve your fat metabolism and enhance your overall energy and stamina. It will make you look and feel fabulous!

Myth #2: You can spot reduce fat

Here’s the truthWhere you might burn body fat will be different to where I burn my body fat. We are all unique. So if your tummy is a problem area, doing sit-ups won’t tighten it, however removing processed foods from your diet, reducing your stress levels and improving your detoxification pathways will. When you combine that with functional strength, interval training and plenty of low intensity movement such as walking, you will then improve your overall fat metabolism and improve your problem areas.

Myth #3: You need to do cardio to lose weight

Here’s the truthLosing weight is not as simple as ‘energy in versus energy out’. Doing long, drawn out cardio in the hopes of burning the calories of that cake and muffin you ate isn’t the best way to lose weight. In fact it can be doing more harm than good.Losing weight starts with your food and your lifestyle. It’s about eating food that is right for your metabolic type, learning what foods work for you, getting good quality sleep, reducing your stress levels and being more active.

Myth #4: One plan will work for every woman

Here’s the truthYou are a unique snowflake. Your history, stress levels, fitness, metabolism and energy is different to everybody else’s. Learning to listen to your body, and understand what it needs in order to achieve real health should be your aim. When you know what it takes for you to feel great and you become a master of your own health, you will know what plan is right for you. It all begins with education and learning how to understand your body more.

Myth #5: Want to lose weight? Just eat less!

Here’s the truthLosing weight and burning body fat are two very different things. Also, losing weight and finding real health is also very different. Often people say they want to lose weight, but when you dig a little deeper, real health is what they really want.

Page 29: Venus Magazine Issue 8

Once you know the difference, you will understand that diets and quick fixes won’t get you there.Achieving real health is not a quick fix, it’s a journey. When you get it right, your body will let go of the weight, it will rebalance your hormones and you will begin to burn body fat as fuel and lose weight in the process. The more you jump from diet to diet and yoyo up and down with your weight, the more you will never allow your body to truly find real health.

Myth #6: Older women shouldn’t do strength training

Here’s the truthThe older you get the more you need strength training. As soon as you hit your 30’s your body physiology begins to decline. If you don’t use it you lose it!Keep your bones, joints and ligaments strong by simply using them. Your body is designed to push, pull, bend, twist, lunge, squat and run/walk. As you get older and the less you move your body the harder these movements will become and the more likely you are to get injured.

Can you do a full squat? Can you do a full press up? Can you lunge? You want to be able to throw a bag of fertilizer into the wheel barrow, dig the holes to plant your trees and actively play with your kids or grand kids, because you can. So keep your body mobile, move more and your body will love you for it.

BUSINESSWOMEN PANELWhat does integrity mean to you?

REI BENNETTMy photography business celebrates the true unique beauty in everyone. www.reibennett.co.nz I am also the Hawkes Bay Venus Manager [email protected].

WHAT DOES INTEGRITY MEAN TO YOU?Integrity is all about being true to yourself, true to what you believe and being true to your word. It’s about knowing what the ‘right’ thing to do is for you, and sticking to it. Its self-love and self-respect!

HOW DO YOU SEE INTEGRITY IMPACTING THE SUCCESS OF OUR MEMBERS?Operating from integrity whilst working with other businesses in Venus is paramount to the success of these relationships. Whether it’s as simple as turning up at an agreed time to a RAVE, or being honest and transparent with situations that may arise; we all need integrity to work together positively.

WHAT ROLE DOES INTEGRITY PLAY IN YOUR OWN BUSINESS?My moral compass guides me in all aspects of my business, as I want to help make a positive difference in the world and not just accept ‘this is just the way it is’ like others in my industry do.

HOW IS YOUR BUSINESS A REFLECTION OF YOU LIVING IN INTEGRITY?My business reflects the integrity I hold within my life as the same rules apply: I wouldn’t recommend a client to look down the drastic surgery path, or to investigate unhealthy dieting, but rather suggest ways to love themselves as they are, as opposed to seeing their body as a machine to be manipulated.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE OUT OF INTEGRITY?I absolutely know if I’m not being in integrity, as I feel a tight pain in my chest and a sense of guilt. I take the time to reflect, write down how I feel, what my actions were and how I could have served myself and those around me better. I make up for it, if needed. It certainly helps to keep me on the right track, to create a happier life and build a respectable business.

CAROLYN TRANTERI show parents and soon-to-be parents how to make life easier so they can absolutely love being parents. www.baby-beginnings.co.nz I am also the Palmerston North Venus Manager [email protected].

WHAT DOES INTEGRITY MEAN TO YOU?Integrity to me is consistently doing what I believe is the right thing, no matter what the circumstances – even when it isn’t going to be easy.

HOW DO YOU SEE INTEGRITY IMPACTING THE SUCCESS OF OUR MEMBERS?Venus members that live in integrity are living the Venus values. They are committed to doing the best for the members of their group, without the expectation of any ‘pay back’ – although when you are giving so freely to the other members you can’t help but receive.

WHAT ROLE DOES INTEGRITY PLAY IN YOUR OWN BUSINESS?Having just come to an understanding of what living in integrity means, I am becoming increasingly aware of how vital it is in my business. My passion is to make a difference in women’s lives. If I am not honouring them, by being true to my word and through my actions I can/will have the complete opposite effect on the women I most want to help.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE OUT OF INTEGRITY?I now understand that the times I feel like I am floundering – unsure of what to do, how to grow my business, feeling like I am in a rut – are the times that I am not living in integrity.

When I am focused on the things I care about, believe in and that are important to me, I find I am more centred and motivated. I’m ready and able to make the difference I desire to make.

“For me to be happy in what I do, integrity comes before money”

“Integrity is essential in any relationship we are in”

CATRINA BENGREEI am passionate about helping people develop a healthy relationship with food. I share “Natural Eating” through motivational speaking and one on one consults. www.nourishnnurture.co.nz I am also the Hutt Valley Venus Manager [email protected].

WHAT DOES INTEGRITY MEAN TO YOU?It means creating win-win solutions in all instances. It’s about feeling great about the decisions I make and the actions I take in all aspects of my life.

HOW DO YOU SEE INTEGRITY IMPACTING THE SUCCESS OF OUR MEMBERS?Integrity is crucial in Venus. Relationships are a key part of this community and women like to work with, help and support women who are genuine and authentic. Knowing, liking and trusting our fellow members is integral to our ongoing success.

WHAT ROLE DOES INTEGRITY PLAY IN YOUR OWN BUSINESS?I am open and honest with all potential and current clients. They are aware that I am not a Dietician, Nutritionist or Counsellor. I simply share my own journey in discovering Natural Eating and how this journey changed my life.

HOW IS YOUR BUSINESS A REFLECTION OF YOU LIVING IN INTEGRITY?I am following my passion and certainly don’t compromise my beliefs around Natural Eating. If I feel what I offer is not the right fit for a client, I will tell them honestly. Everything about Natural Eating is positive and empowering and this is reflected in the way I coach and motivate people.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE OUT OF INTEGRITY?I know when I’m out of integrity if something doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t sit comfortably with me and I find myself procrastinating or going around in circles. Now when this happens I take positive action immediately to put the situation right and get back in-flow.

SADIE HEADLANDSituated in Papamoa in the beautiful Bay of Plenty, we have a large range of beautiful flowers and gifts that are perfect for any occasion or a treat for yourself. www.petalperfection.co.nz. I am also the Bay of Plenty Venus Manager [email protected].

WHAT DOES INTEGRITY MEAN TO YOU?Integrity is one of the most important skills I have learnt and come to recognise in both my business and personal life. Integrity is easily translated into Honesty, Truthfulness and Respect for EVERYONE.

HOW DO YOU SEE INTEGRITY IMPACTING THE SUCCESS OF OUR MEMBERS?Integrity for my Venus team members is so important and expected. I know I can trust them to deliver my business message, my business philosophy and products. They are a valued extension of my business.

WHAT ROLE DOES INTEGRITY PLAY IN YOUR OWN BUSINESS?I treat all my customers and suppliers with integrity. In return they treat me with the same respect. Dealing with suppliers without respect is impossible. It can only harm your business and not allow your business to move forward.

HOW IS YOUR BUSINESS A REFLECTION OF YOU LIVING IN INTEGRITY?I am happy in my personal life. My florist is my happy place and my home is my happy place. I am so proud of my family and my work, they are extension of each other. We spend a lot of time in the florist, my children love to spend time in the florist with me. My home life and business life are automatically filled with honesty, truthfulness, sincerity and respect.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE OUT OF INTEGRITY? Would I like that said to me? Would I like to feel how I have just made that person feel? If I have to ask myself such questions, then my integrity is out!

“Integrity means being genuine, honest and caring”

“Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behaviour does”

Have you got the right cover for your business & family?

VENUS BUSINESS EXPERTInsurance

I recently did a review on a new client who purchased her cover online. Looking over her cover during the review I noticed she had ticked the non-smoking box. “I thought you were a smoker? I said to her. “I am” she replied, “but the premium was cheaper if I ticked the non-smoker option”. This scenario immediately rings alarm bells.

If this were to happen to you, you may not be covered at claim time, because you haven’t divulged an honest medical history. You would be left feeling disappointed, angry and frustrated.

BE HONEST

It is vital to be honest at application time so the company assessing the risk can make an accurate decision on whether to cover you for all conditions you’ve had.

Some conditions can still be covered, so let them make the call to ensure certainty.

KNOW YOUR INSURANCE NEEDS

When was the last time you sat down and thought about all the various risks that you, your family and your business have? Before choosing insurance, consider the following insurance needs:

1. How much cover do I need?2. What should I protect myself against?3. How do I prioritise in order to fit within a budget?4. Am I able to financially survive without my Income for any period of time?

Page 33: Venus Magazine Issue 8

GET THE RIGHT COVEROnce these needs are clear, your Insurance Adviser can match these to the right insurance.

They are trained to take the stress away and assist you through the process of feeling you have done the right thing, leaving you with peace of mind your whole family/business has been protected.

CHANGE YOUR INSURANCE WHEN YOUR SITUATION CHANGESAs your situation changes, you may need to change your insurance to meet your new needs. Times that are most important to change include:

Getting marriedA new babyStarting a BusinessPurchasing a propertyChildren are now independentSeparation or Divorce

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH AN ADVISER

• Your adviser will work hard for the best underwriting possible at application time

• Advisers are well aware of what’s in your policy document and the entire policy wording makes sense to them

• Your adviser will be the first person you will call in the event of a claim

• Advisers will advise the best possible cover for you according to your risk. Being personal advocates is important, because you know we are on your side.

THINGS TO CHECK WITH YOUR CURRENT INSURANCE

• Do you know what you are and are not covered for?• What is the purpose of the cover?• When was the last time you reviewed your covers to see if

they are still in line with your expectations?• Who will handle your claim if you are the one in an

intensive care unit?

REVIEW YOUR INSURANCEReviews are very important to ensure the current cover still applies to the risk. There may also have been an exclusion or loading of premium that we can review and quite possibly get removed.

A review can just be a phone call, over a coffee or visit. It’s entirely up to the client We highly recommend getting a review done of your insurance so you can know that your family and your business is covered.

Nielsen did a survey regarding people’s “trust” in various forms of advertising (see the graph below). The top two categories of trust involved word of mouth. All other forms of advertising were substantially lower than these top two.

Business owners ask me why networking is so important. I think the graph below clearly demonstrates why building a network of trusted colleagues is so important for business growth and success. Business networking is not only the most cost effective form of marketing, it is also the most effective. This independent study clearly confirms the power of word-of-mouth marketing in growing your business.

With all of the various social media outlets that people are using these days, the cool guys at Leverage New Age Media in the states thought it would be useful to come up with an infographic that breaks down each of the most popular social outlets into digestible snippets. This was taken as a snapshot in April 2013.

This demonstrates the advantages of each and how they can be best utilized. so you can learn how to best leverage each platform with this social media comparison infographic.

Learn how to leverage the main Social media platforms

Although these stats are a year out of date this infographic is a great visual tool to show the difference between the leading social media platforms and the number of active users across the board.

Updated in April 2014 the active users are 1.28 billion on Facebook, 200 million on Instagram and 300 million on LinkedIn. Latest figures taken from http://expandedramblings.com/index.php/resource-how-many-people-use-the-top-social-media.

It’s a well-known fact that women are the purchasers or key influencers of 85% of all consumer purchases. Even in traditionally ‘male’ product categories like electronics and cars women are responsible for over 65% of all purchase decisions. However, 91% of women say advertisers don’t understand them (She-conomy). Indicating that many businesses are missing out on crucial sales by not focusing on women more strongly in their designs, communications and sales strategies.

Strategic planning and design is critical to attracting more women to your product or service. Here are 6 simple ways you can create more female appeal and boost your profits:

PAY ATTENTION TO CUSTOMER SERVICE

Research shows that women have higher expectations of customer service than men do. Whether that service is face-to-face, online, or over the phone, women will leave as a result of poor, disrespectful or frustrating service.

Can you add an online chat service to your website? Are you advertising delivery options outside of traditional business hours, so she doesn’t have to take a day off work? Can she schedule an appointment immediately without waiting to be called or emailed back? How easy is it for her to find what she needs from you on her mobile phone, in three minutes or less?

PASS THE TESTWhen targeting women ‘pink’ is not a

marketing strategy, nor is motherhood. Try to avoid pigeonholing women into stereotypical groups. Look at your most recent ads featuring women, whether they’re print or digital and see if you can answer “yes” to the following three questions:

1. Do you feature a woman outside of the home?2. Do you feature a woman in a role other

than “mother”?3. Is she NOT doing yoga?

You’d be surprised by how many ads fail this simple test but when you can break away from the stereotypes that’s when women feel inspired.

CHOOSE IMAGERY THAT RESONATES

Think about how your business can break away from stereotypical images in your ads, brochures and website design. Did you know that most women-owned businesses are run out of a home office and employ fewer than five people? If you’re targeting female business owners it makes you think twice about choosing that stock image of the “business woman” wearing a skirt suit, stiletto heels and crossing her arms, doesn’t it?

OFFER WOMEN INCENTIVES NOT DISCOUNTS

Women are savvy shoppers and will look for the best offer, which may not always be price orientated. Providing a memorable experience will ensure women become loyal brand advocates.

Take price out of the equation and focus on other benefits you can offer her; then communicate those incentives to her with sophisticated graphics that go straight to her inbox or Facebook feed. Can you provide a complementary service or partner with another business for mutual benefit?

ADDRESS HER ‘INVISIBLE OTHERS’The real reason women buy more is actually not very

exciting. In reality it’s because they purchase for others. In virtually every society around the world, women have primary-caregiving roles and as a result they are constantly

evaluating how their shopping decisions will impact those they care about.

Bridget Brennan author of Why She Buys says, “women are multiple markets in one. They are the gateway to everybody else.” When selling to a woman try to find out who else might be using the product, be it a new refrigerator, a television or a car; in doing so you will be able to point out specific features of the product that might appeal to their ‘invisible others’ and as a result remove hidden barriers to the sale.

If the product is specific to her, such as lingerie or shoes, create a dedicated entertainment zone in the store for her husband or child so she can shop at her leisure without guilt. Communicate these messages visually in your product brochures and in-store.

SURPRISE AND DELIGHT HERWhen it comes to building a reputation for excellent customer service a key element is ‘surprise’. In

their study (2001) on anticipation and emotion, Mellers and McGraw found that “surprising outcomes have greater intensity than expected outcomes. Surprise amplifies the emotional experience.” Women in particular are looking for extra, emotional reasons why they should care about a brand based on it caring about them.

Chartered Accountants, Accountants and Tax Agents LEARN THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THESE PROFESSIONS TO FIND OUT WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS

In today’s complex business environment, getting the right advice can mean the difference between success and failure.

Did you know there is a difference between a Tax Agent, an Accountant and a Chartered Accountant? There is a difference and as a businesswoman you need to know what these differences are. You can then carefully choose who is best to work with, given the value this trusted advisor can add to you in helping you grow a profitable business.

TAX AGENTS

Tax agents represent the interests of people obligated to pay taxes. They have the option of being registered with the IRD or not. Clients of Registered Tax Agents can have an automatic extension of time to file income tax returns.

Did you know there is a difference

between a Tax Agent,

an Accountant and a Chartered

Accountant?

Some may choose to belong to the Accountants and Tax Agents Institute of New Zealand which has a Code of Ethics members must comply to. These cover four main areas: integrity; trust and confidence; standards of service; and professional conduct.

A Tax Agent is a good choice for you if you are simply a salary and wage earner.

ACCOUNTANTS

Any person can call themselves an accountant in New Zealand. Like a Tax Agent they have the option of belonging to the Accountants and Tax Agents Institute of New Zealand and following their Code of Ethics. The most recognised form of this type of accountant is one who helps people correctly compile and file their tax returns each year.

This is a good choice for you if you just require bookkeeping services.

They are members of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) and are bound by the NZICA code of ethics and required to adhere to professional standards.

BEFORE WORKING WITH REBECCA – THE PROBLEM

An incident when I was eleven years old left me with a phobia of staying home alone overnight. My 15 year old sister and I were home alone one evening when I heard a noise outside our lounge window. Not thinking what I’d actually see if I looked, I went and checked out what the noise was. As I opened the curtains I saw a prowler running away from the deck, and the chair that he had been sitting in watching us had been pulled up to the window and was rocking from his swift departure.

In that moment I made a very unconscious decision to not stay home alone, again, ever. At 39 years old it had finally become rather inconvenient to feel this way. No matter how many coaching conversations I had, I couldn’t seem to get to the heart of the matter. My husband was spending more nights away tramping as he’d recently picked up this new sport. I now needed to overcome this so I could enjoy my time home alone and not dread it.

WORKING WITH REBECCA – THE EXPERIENCE

It was around this time that I was having a RAVE with Rebecca and she talked about phobias and how we just live with some of them thinking the fear is normal. In that moment I clicked that the petrified 9/10 crazy-scared feeling that comes over me staying home alone, isn’t actually normal and there might be a way to overcome this phobia.

I hadn’t fully appreciated the extraordinary work hypnotherapists do to help people experience more freedom in their lives. The subconscious mind (where phobias are created and exist) has powerful programming built in to protect us yet thankfully it has made allowances to unlearn these old fears. This is the work I did with Rebecca. I have had three sessions, which she recommends as the foundation to overcome a phobia. They were held at her home office in the

North Shore. I felt completely safe, comfortable and taken care of during my 90 minute sessions.

WHAT HAS BECOME POSSIBLE – THE BENEFITS & RESULTS

I’m thrilled to share that my fear of staying home alone is now at a 2/10 and is dependent on the level of stress in my life at the time. I am so grateful to Rebecca for helping me with this phobia.

What I also received that I wasn’t expecting, was help with my stress levels. I experienced such deep calm and relaxation from each of the three sessions. I also have introduced a new habit of listening to a 25 minute relaxation audio that she gave me. At least three times a week I listen to this guided relaxation audio just before sleeping. This has helped me feel happier, calmer and more relaxed as I go about building Venus Network with my team.

A lot of hypnotherapy is about accessing positive and resourceful states to help you be more healthy, happy and successful. I will be continuing my work with Rebecca to support my mind and body to operate from a relaxed, stress-free space, as I know it has a dramatic impact on the quality of my life and the success of my business.

The foundation of trust and respect is integrity. If that foundation of integrity is flawed or weak, it is impossible to build the necessary trust required to maintain successful, positive relationships.

Understanding integrity is about doing the little things rightIt is said that those who cannot be trusted at all times, cannot truly be trusted at any time. Building trust with others requires time and patience, yet one betrayal, no matter how large or small, can destroy that trust forever.

Make a commitment to be honest and reliableBeing a person of integrity requires a conscious decision. Don’t wait until you are facing a crisis to decide how you will react. Make the decision now to be an honest and reliable person. Make the decision that you do not have a price – you will not sell your integrity for money, fame, power, or any anything else no matter what.

Put “Doing the Right Thing” Ahead of Your Personal Agenda/GoalsThe person of integrity will make difficult decisions even if there is a personal cost attached to them.

Be the Same Person in Private as you are in PublicIt is often said that the measure of a person’s character is what he/she does when no one is watching. Character is who we are at all times.

Be Accountable for Your Actions and Behaviour at All TimesAccept credit for your successes gracefully, but more importantly, accept responsibility for your mistakes and wrongdoings without being forced to do so.

Do Not Allow Circumstances to Alter Your Moral CompassDevelop an unchanging standard for moral decision-making, regardless of circumstance. Integrity is not dependent or determined by circumstances. right is right regardless of the circumstance.

Treat All People with Respect Even if You Have Nothing to Gain: Do not treat those who cannot “do anything” for you less well than those who can help you achieve your goals.

Talk to People, Not About Them: If you have problems or issues with another person, discuss the issue with them directly. Don’t gossip, and don’t spread poison.

Do What You Must Do, Even When You Do Not Want to Do Them: We all face unpleasant tasks. Get them out of the way. performing unpleasant tasks without complaint shows the people around you that you are not just there for the good times.

By being a person of integrity you lay a foundation which will allow you to build

successful relationships.

Three powerful words that can have a dramatic impact on the quality of your life, on the success you create in your business and the productivity of your day.

We had great success when we went through this process at the Venus Regional Managers Training Day this year. I’m also bringing it into our Venus Business Teams. I am sharing this process with you because winter is the perfect time to step back, take stock and consolidate. You can use this start-stop-continue process every year, every season, every month and even every week.

This activity can be used for a variety of purposes relating to development and communication. It provides a balanced

discussion of areas of improvement, areas of strength and areas of opportunity as they relate to your own or your team’s objectives and performance. As a Soloprenuer consider using this exercise each month for continual improvement in your business. As a team leader you can use this to facilitate growth and development.

I complete one of these each month. Then place it on my office noticeboard by my desk, so I can see how I’m tracking each month. Ask yourself each question in the worksheet and write your answer underneath it.

You could use this in any area of your life – have fun with this, Vanessa.

Every work day morning before I do ANYTHING, I print out this form and create my day. I’ve realised if I’m not creating my day with my important and urgent activities, then my day is being filled by everyone else’s important and urgent tasks. If you want to help everyone else finish their to-do list – at the start of every day jump on your emails, go on to social media and allow other people first place in your schedule. If you want to build a successful business, create a life you love and have freedom with your time – make sure your important and urgent tasks have priority by completing a Focus Form each morning.

CHECK MY CALENDAR - what have I got booked in today?

LOOK THROUGH EMAILS - what are urgent?

This is important – only put on this form the ones that are urgent and need my attention.

CHECK PROJECT PLANS - what tasks need to be completed?

I only put 12 items on this list, I then focus on completing all these items before I do anything else for the day.

Home made granola is easy, smells amazing when roasting and tastes great. Store it in a sealed container for several weeks. Serve with lashings of greek yoghurt and fresh or stewed fruit.

METHODPre-heat oven to 1800C.

Mix the oats, nuts, seeds, cinnamon, coconut, honey and coconut oil together in a large bowl. Don’t be afraid to get your hands into it to mix it well! Lay out on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Toast in the oven for 15-20 mins, keep checking it and stirring it so that it roasts evenly and doesn’t set off the smoke alarms. When golden and crispy, remove from the oven and cool.

Place your pansy petals (if you are using them) in the oven for a few moments to dry – don’t burn them or the pansy fairies won’t forgive you.

When the granola is cool place it in a large bowl and mix it with your hands to break it all up. Add the goji berry mix and the dried pansy petals and any other ingredients you like such as dried apricots, cranberries etc. Place in sealed jars.

Organic ingredients preferred.

INGREDIENTS2 cups organic jumbo rolled oats1 ½ cups of roughly chopped nuts (such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil or a mixture)1 cup coconut chips½ cup pumpkin seeds½ cup sunflower seeds1 tsp cinnamon½ tsp cardomom powder½ cup honey (runny or melted)½ cup coconut oil (melted)¾ cup of goji berry/cocoa nib mix (optional, get this from your health store)12 pansy flowers, petals only (optional)
