In the heart of Arizona, amidst a beautiful and rich his-toric area lies the Verde Valley. The Verde River winds its way through the valley communities providing a vari-ety of recreation and enjoyment. Fishing, swimming, hiking, camping, and wildlife watching, are just some of the activities to be enjoyed.

The immediate area offers three golf courses, three state parks and several small lakes, an abundance of trails for hiking and horseback riding and several his-torical sites to visit such as Montezuma’s Castle, Mon-tezuma’s Well, Tuzigoot, and Fort Verde State Historic Park. Early inhabitants, the Hohokam and Sinagua fol-lowed by the Apache, and Yavapai Tribes and white set-tlers left a rich heritage, which has enhanced the appeal of the valley.

Another attraction is the Verde Canyon Railway in Clarkdale, which takes visitors on a train ride through history and through beautiful areas that cannot be seen by automobile.

The early growth of the Verde Valley centered on agricul-ture and mining. Today the economic foundation consists of manufacturing, retail, recreation, tourism, and retire-ment related industries. An influx of retirees also attracts and expands the core services they require; including real estate, financial, legal and investment planning, and above all health care.

The Verde Valley’s quality of life continues to attract people from all walks of life, thus creating a continuous demand for housing. Several master-planned communi-ties are under development in Cottonwood, Camp Verde and Clarkdale and its immediate environs. A large variety of models and price ranges are available. Some planned communities include a golf course, pool and clubhouse. Much thought, planning and governmental approval has gone into each of these projects insuring quality develop-ment for the community.

Exceptional schools, community centers, excellent health-care and a multitude of outdoor activities continue to bring new families and retirees to this beautiful area.

The Verde Valley elevation ranges from 3,133’ at Camp Verde to 3,300’ at Cottonwood, providing almost ideal weather condi-tions allowing plenty of time for outdoor activities. Annual pre-cipitation averages 11.83” in the Valley and daytime maximum temperatures range from approximately 58°F. in the coldest winter months to about 100°F during the warmest summer months. Clean smog-free air exists throughout the Verde Valley with most days having blue skies and sunshine.

This high desert region exhibits virtually every type of terrain. Millions of years ago the valley was a land of lush grassland and marshes. Today, large green cottonwood trees grow abun-dantly along the Verde River, which flows through the valley. Surrounded by the Mingus Mountain Range, the towering red rocks of Sedona, and deep canyons, the valley displays some of the most majestic scenery to be found in Arizona.

Camp Verde Community Profile ContinuedClarkdaleClarkdale is at the upper end of the Verde Valley in Yavapai County approximately 110 miles north of Phoenix and south of the Grand Canyon at an elevation of 3,542 feet.

Topography of the area is characterized by numerous mesas and buttes along the rise from the Verde River on the east, at 3,300 feet, to the Mingus Mountains on the west, at 7,000 feet. Clarkdale, incorporated in 1957, was laid out in 1914 near the site of the Clarkdale Smelter, which was financed by Sena-tor William A. Clark of Montana. Construction of the smelter began in 1910 and it processed ore from nearby Jerome until 1952. Clarkdale was a company town way ahead of its time with many modern amenities. The old mining and smelter sites and clubhouse are listed on the National Register of His-toric Sites.

Clarkdale developed as a service center for the mining area around it. The growing population spurs the housing and con-struction industries and makes for active retail and service sec-tors within a five-mile radius of this community.

north central Arizona easily accessible. Historic Main-Town Clarkdale preserves its “model town” look and an ambiance perfect for walking tours. In addition, the historic downtown district offers one restaurant, an arts and accents along with several service businesses.

Efforts to preserve the “model town” features of the commu-nity while meeting new challenges include a downtown revi-talization program that in 1997-98 enlisted students from the University of Arizona’s Landscape Architecture School. Among their recommendations was a tree-shaded traffic circulation pattern for Main Street. A Clarkdale Strategic Plan for Econom-ic Development, published in November 1995, describes ways in which Clarkdale is expanding its residential and economic base, as well as its goals for manageable tourism.

The Town of Clarkdale, in February 1999, received a $500,000 grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation for beau-tification and enhancement of its historic downtown area. The grant permitted construction of wider sidewalks, planting of trees, and other landscaping features.

The Town of Clarkdale is also the home of the Made In Clarkdale Art Show. The show begins on the first Friday of December and runs for 10 days. This show, known the world over, is a must for anyone who loves art. Education

The education system in the Verde Valley is one that has maintained local control to

respond to the needs of the community while preserving the accountability standards mandated by state and federal governments.

In standardized testing Verde Valley schools have performed in the upper half of the state

standards. With only two exceptions all schools have been labeled as maintaining or improving in the state standards. There are a wide range of programs that encourage diversity, respect, academic excellence

and career exploration in all schools.

CottonwoodThe community support for schools is strong, as is parent in-volvement. There have been numerous prestigious scholarships awarded to Verde Valley students and in one high school alone, there were over 1.5 million dollars in scholarships. Cottonwood has one high school and five elementary schools. Two post sec-ondary college opportunities allow students to earn degrees up to the Masters level locally.

Several private and church related schools are available.

Cottonwood/Oak Creek School Dist. No. 6: Cottonwood-Oak Creek Elementary District services an approximate student population of 2,500 in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The district's overall student/teacher ratio is 18.2:1. Cotton-wood-Oak Creek Elementary District allocates approximately $5,890 per pupil for expenses. Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District (COCSD) is an elementary school district serving stu-dents from preschool through eighth grade. COCSD has five schools within our attendance area:

Dr. Daniel Bright School is a primary school for students in pre-school through second grade. Cottonwood Elementary School is an intermediate school serv-ing students in grades three through five. Cottonwood Middle School serves grades six through eight. Tavasci Elementary School is our newest school. The K-5 cam-pus is designed to eventually serve children in grades K – 8 who live in Verde Village Units 1 – 5. Oak Creek School is nestled in the small community of Corn-ville. seum in the administration building in 1956 and donated sev-eral buildings to create Fort Verde State Historic Park in 1970.

Jerome, sometimes nicknamed “The City in the Sky,” was at one time the most talked about mining camp in America. It was a roaring, violent town, called the most wicked city in America. Jerome’s modern history began in 1876. Three pros-pectors staked claims on rich copper deposits, which they later sold to the United Verde Copper Company in 1883. Eugene Jerome was the venture’s principal backer. A new owner, Wil-liam A. Clark, brought in a narrow gauge railroad to reduce freight costs. By the early 20th century, the United Verde was the largest producing copper mine in the Arizona Territory. In 1912, James S. Douglas purchased and developed the Little Daisy Mine. Copper production peaked in 1929. The popula-tion at that time was 15,000. Loss of profits brought Jerome mining days to an end in 1953. By 1955, Jerome’s population was less than 100, giving it the title of a “ghost” town. It is now a veritable paradise for artists, photographers and history buffs.

Cottonwood, named after the beautiful cottonwood trees along the Verde River, was a farm settlement in the late 1870’s and developed along with the progress of Jerome, providing homes for the miners, smeltermen and their families. Cot-tonwood was incorporated in 1960 and is the business cen-ter of the Verde Valley.

Just two miles north of Cottonwood, is the town of Clarkdale, which was planned and built in the early 1900’s to serve the employees and management of the smelter company which smelted copper ore from one of Jerome’s mines. It has a real sense of history. Most of the houses are original structures on its quiet, tree-lined streets.

History of The Verde ValleyHistory abounds in this geographical center of Arizona.

Archaeologists estimate that humans have been in the Verde Valley for at least 11,000 years. The earliest inhabitants were Indians. A skillful farming people, the Hohokam moved into the Valley around A.D. 600. They were experts in irrigation procedures.

The Sinagua were pithouse dwellers and dry farmers who moved into the Valley around 1125. The villages at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot reached their present size in the

1300’s and were abandoned in the early 1400’s by the Sinaguan. The Yavapai were in the Valley when Captain Antonio de Espejo and his band of Spanish conquistadors took pos-

session of “great riches” in the Verde Valley in 1583.

Military occupation of the Verde Valley began in 1865 to protect settlers farming along the Verde River – West Creek junction, five miles south of Camp Verde. Mining and farming disrupted the lives of the Tonto Apache and the Yavapai. The late 1860’s and early 1870’s saw major conflicts in the Valley. The first mili-tary post (1865) overlooked the farms at West Clear Creek. The next post, Camp Lincoln, was located one mile north of the Fort’s present site, and was used from 1866-1871. The present post was built during 1871-73. Camp Verde had been renamed Fort Verde in 1879 to signify permanence.

The post was abandoned in 1891. Local citizens began a mu-

Between 1873 and 1875, nearly 1500 Indians from various bands were placed on an 800 sq. mile reserve headquartered near present site Cottonwood.

The Indians were later moved to the San Carlos Reserva-tion. The 10-day trek, in the cold, resulted in death for many from exposure and insufficient food. An effort by the army to keep the Indians on the San Carlos and Fort Apache reserva-tion resulted in an uprising in 1882 -- the last major battle with Apaches in Arizona. Camp Verde renamed Fort Verde

History of the Verde Valley Continued

Military occupation of the Verde Valley began in 1865 at the re-

quest of settlers who had established farms near the Verde River,

five miles south of present Camp Verde. The influx of settlers and

miners had severely disrupted the hunting and gathering economy

of the Tonto-Apache and Yavapai Indians, who in turn began raid-

ing the fields for corn. The late 1860’s and early 1870’s saw major

conflicts between the army and the Indians.in 1879, became less important with the cessation of raids in 1882 and was abandoned in 1891, then later sold at public auction in 1899.

A museum was founded in 1956 by local citizens who donat-ed several buildings to create Fort Verde State Historic Park in 1970. The 10-acre park includes four of the original adobe fort buildings which contain military artifacts Indian relics and articles used by settlers and Indians. The site was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Local Attractions & RecreationWith the mild four-season climate, recreational opportunities are plentiful in the Verde Valley.

Five state parks and three Pre-Columbian Sinaguan Historic Sites are located in this area. Golf can be enjoyed year-round. Over 100 bird species have been identified at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. Beautiful hiking trails weave throughout the Verde Valley. 7,700 ft. Mingus Mountain is a mecca for hang gliding enthusiasts with launches as a regular occurrence on weekends.

Excellent elk, antelope and deer hunting exists in close proxim-ity to the Verde Valley. For winter sports, a short drive north to Flagstaff offers snowmobiling, cross country trails and down-hill skiing. The General Crook Trail, beginning at Fort Verde Park and winding through the Mogollon Rim to Fort Apache, is a scenic drive of unsurpassed beauty along which can be seen the old mile markers on rocks and trees.

The Verde River flows through Verde Valley supporting one of the states best riparian habitats. Riverfront park and Dead Horse Ranch State Park provide access to the Verde River Gre-enway. Thousands of rainbow trout are stocked in the Verde River and Dead Horse Reservoir from November through March providing excellent fishing.

Beasley Flats, operated by the U.S. Forest Service, is now a major starting point for trips on the Verde River.

Local Attractions & RecreationVerde River Days is perhaps the most anticipated and favorite annual event of Cot-tonwood’s residents. The event began in September of 1989 as

an attempt to develop an awareness of the Verde River as a valuable resource and to gather support for the protection of the Verde River and its riparian habitat. This family-oriented, unique event has proven a huge success and may be the only one of its kind in the whole country. Verde River Days, through its many exhibits, canoe rides, sand castle building, fishing derby, rubber duck race, nature walks, geological hikes, living history performances, and many other activities have certainly made residents, as well as visitors, aware of the Verde River as a natural resource. Arcosanti Paolo Soleri’s city of the future

In 1970, the Cosanti Foundation began building Arcosanti, an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona, 70 miles north of metropolitan Phoenix. Designed to house 5000 peo-ple, demonstrating ways to improve urban conditions and less-en our destructive impact on the earth

In this complex, creative environment, apartments, businesses, production, technology, open space, studios, and educational and cultural events are all accessible, while privacy is paramount in the overall design. Greenhouses provide gardening space for public and private use, and act as solar collectors for winter heat.

Concerts and other events in the Colly Soleri Music Center also al-low visitors to experience Arcosanti. Shows include dinner, and are often followed by a pictograph light show on the opposite mesa.

TuzigootTuzigoot (Apache for “crooked water”) is the remnant of a Sin-aguan village built between 1125 and 1400. It crowns the sum-mit of a long ridge that rises 120 feet above the Verde Valley. The original pueblo was two stories high in places and had 77 ground-floor rooms. There were few exterior doors; entry was by way of ladders through openings in the roofs. The village began as a small cluster of rooms that were inhabited by about 50 persons for a hundred years. In the 1200s the population doubled and doubled again as refugee farmers, fleeing drought in outlying areas, settled here. (located in the Clarkdale area.

Jerome Perched on the steep slopes of Cleopatra Hill on Mingus Moun-tain at an elevation of between 5400 ft. and 7000 ft. lies the once roaring mining town of Jerome. Once the third most pop-ulous community in Arizona, Jerome was founded in 1876, with a peak population of 15,000 in 1919. The community now has a small but dedicated population of over 500 persons who have rallied to rescue its historic and scenic treasures from neglect and deterioration.

A thriving artist colony and tourist attraction, this unique and quaint old town now houses gift shops, eateries and art galleries along its cobblestoned streets. Historical interests bring many visitors to Jerome, but another lure is its spectacular setting.

Route 89A is the entry point for Jerome. Driving south, the highway rises almost 2,000 ft. above Clarkdale as it twists and winds past an extraordinary residential community of unusu-al and colorful decor surrounded by lush gardens. The view encompasses much of the Verde Valley with the striking red rocks of Sedona to the north. The entire Town of Jerome is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Lake Montezuma/RimrockMcGuireville Lake Montezuma, Rimrock and McGuireville are part of the Verde Valley, centered in Arizona’s Yavapai County. The Valley is surrounded by national forest lands with Wet Beaver Creek flowing through it. Interstate 17 crosses the Valley north and south connecting Phoenix and Flagstaff. Lake Montezuma takes its name from the nearby famous Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well and Indian ruins. Rimrock was named for a dude ranch that was located near the community. Rimrock’s post office, established in 1929, serves the area residents. Mc-Guireville was for many years called “The Station” due to the gas service Eugene McGuire offered to travelers on their way from Camp Verde to Stoneman Lake.

Day Trips

Cornville/Page Springs The Cornville and Page Springs area is located between Cot-tonwood and Sedona. Several housing developments are scattered throughout this picturesque area of rolling hills, ranches and small farms. Oak Creek flows gently through here creating a greenbelt of lush trees and shrubs. There are several wineries in the area. Page Springs Fish Hatchery, the largest in the state is located along Oak Creek in the commu-nity of Page Springs. The hatchery raises rainbow and brown trout that are shipped out to stock rivers, streams and lakes throughout Arizona. The hatchery provides 60% of the rain-bow trout that are raised by state hatcheries. There are three parts to the hatchery system, the main hatchery and race-ways where the fish are raised, two nature areas on both ends and a trail along the creek with picnic tables and benches at several locations. This is also a haven for bird watchers.

Verde Canyon RailroadThe Verde Canyon Railroad line was built from 1911 to 1912 to haul copper from the Clarkdale, Arizona smelter to the vast ex-panses of the West. Part of the journey is the colorful narration about the remnants of a bygone era; conveying observations of the beauty, history, wildlife, and geology that are an integral part of the Verde Canyon.

The Verde Canyon is home to many indigenous and migra-tory birds, the most notable of which is the American bald eagle. Native quail, red-tailed hawks and a wide variety of ducks are visible from the train. Passengers are likely to see deer and javelina along the river’s edge, while beaver and ot-ters are seen occasionally.

Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon Situated in the heart of a strikingly beautiful geological area that has mesmerized visitors for years, this unique community of Sedona is surrounded by massive crimson and buff sandstone monoliths standing in artistic contrast with pinon, juniper and cypress trees. Add to this the spectacular Oak Creek Canyon Rd. leading north and climbing 12 miles up, each turn more breathtaking than the last with lush vegetation, craggy canyons, sycamores, oak and cottonwood.

Complementing the magnificence of these natural cre-ations is the delightfully charming Arts and Crafts Village of “Tlaquepaque,” situated in the heart of Sedona. Meaning “the best of everything,” Tlaquepaque is truly a fitting name for this Spanish Colonial Village.

Displays by several well known Arizona artisans, intriguing one-of-a-kind shops, fine restaurants, sunny flower-filled courtyards, graceful old sycamores, colorful tiles, fountains and carillons combine to create an unforget-table ambiance.

Montezuma Well Montezuma Well has all the surprise of a lake and fairly lush vegetation in the midst of desert. The well is a limestone sink formed long ago by the collapse of an immense underground cavern. The springs that feed it flow continuously. Both the Hohokam and Sinagua irrigated crops with its waters. Traces of their irrigation ditches, thickly coated with lime, can be seen.

The Hohokam pit-house on view was built about 1100. The Sinaguan dwell-ings here vary in size from large pueb-los of 55 rooms to one-room houses. Between 1125 and 1400 about 150 to 200 Sinaguans lived here. (north of Camp Verde off I-17)

Montezuma CastleSinagua farmers began building this five-story, 20-room dwell-ing early in the 12th century. It stands in a cliff recess a hun-dred feet above the valley. Early settlers marveled at the struc-ture and thought mistakenly that it was Aztecan in origin. A short distance west is Castle A, once an imposing six-story apartment with about 45 rooms, now a badly deteriorated ruin. This dwelling was built against the base of the cliff. The creek was a reliable source of water, and there was fertile land on the nearby terrace. (north of Camp Verde off I-17)

Day Trips ContinuedThe Yavapai-Apache Nation The Yavapai-Apache Nation (population 1,600), federally recog-nized as a sovereign entity, comprises five separate parcels of trust land dedicated to descendents of the Wipukyipai (Yavapai) and Dil Zhee (Tonto Apache) peoples.

The Yavapai speak the Yuman dialect, the Apache People speak the Athabascan dialect. Inter-tribal contacts over the centuries have caused some borrowing of cultural aspects such as hous-ing, marriages, dress, alliances in warfare, and even language. But the two were distinct tribes practicing their own way of life with their own ceremonies and societal functions for hundreds of years before their first European contact. Each tribe inhabit-ed the Verde Valley-Prescott area during that early period. Hills, valleys and canyons hold many sacred places and contribute to their heritage. Spiritual ties to the land remain strong.

Incremental acquisition of land holdings since the return began has resulted in today’s total of 652 acres, held in trust by fed-eral authority for all Yavapai-Apache generations. These parcels are listed by the Department of Interior as the Camp Verde Reservation (458 acres off Middle Verde Road west of Interstate 17), three parcels nearby in Camp Verde, one in Rimrock and one in Clarkdale.

With the opening in 1995 of the Cliff Castle Casino (off Inter-state 17, exit 289 at Camp Verde), the Nation began a period of economic growth that has made it the largest employer in the Verde Valley.

Revenues generated from the tribally owned and operated casi-no have enabled the Nation to raise the community’s standard of living, supply additional services to older persons, provide educational opportunity for all ages, fund tribal cultural pro-grams and foster several new businesses.

There’s a reason homeownership is the foundation of the American Dream.

Over time, owning your home has proved to be a good decision. And while lately the economy has presented some challenges, it has also helped us focus on what matters most. It’s reminded us that home is where we make memories, build our future and feel comfortable and secure. When you’re ready, a REALTOR®, a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, can help you find the home that’s right for you. REALTORS® are prepared—to answer your questions, show you options and guide you home.
