VANDERBIJLPARK. – A man’s inappropri-ate attempt at a joke with an infant and hisparents at the President Hyper (Vaal) has de-veloped into a major embarrassment for thesupermarket group and two local clergymen.Thousands of social media users have belie-ved and spread a distorted story of a child whowas “abducted at a shopping center” and arenow embarrassed by their own gullibility.

What actually happened was an infant waswalking just ahead of his parents at PresidentHyper (Vaal) when a man jokingly picked himup from behind. The man’s inappropriate at-tempt at teasing the child and his parents mis-fired as themother reactedwith extreme shockeven though he immediately gave the childback.

By chance the child was the grandson ofa Vereeniging clergyman (Ster is withholdinghis name in order to protect the identity of thechild).At a recent preachers gathering the pre-acher-grandfather discussed the incident withRev Andre Swanepoel of the Herformde Ge-meente Vanderbijlpark-Suid.

This year is the Church’s Child ProtectionYear and so Rev Andre mentioned to his con-

gregation from the pulpit that for children’ssafety parents should at all times keep awatchful eye on their children in public places.”

While I was talking about this I remembe-red my colleague telling me about his grand-child and I told the congregation about the pu-blic altercation with the man,” he said. ”I didnot intend to indicate that such events only oc-curred at shopping centres such but at any pu-blic place, even in the street at our church pre-cinct,” he said.

Unluckily one of the churchgoers had liste-ned selectively and using her cell phone afterthe church service sent out a Watsapp warningto all her friends about the “kidnapping at Pre-sident Hyper”.

The story which had reached thousand ofpersons in South Africa as well as Australiaand Europe, had acquired many fanciful add-ons such as that it had occurred the previousweek in Krugersdorp and that the abducterwith the child had to be tackled in order forthe child to be rescued. Other false informati-on was that the man ran with the child to awaiting vehicle filled with members of a child

abduction syndicate. All this is totally untrue.A local industrial psychologist says this is

a textbook case of how the public embellishesan unfounded rumour in the social media andcauses panic without any foundation in fact.

“Humans experience a need for sensationand to express their own fear. They embellisha story until it becomes a credible and frighte-ning story. Additionally the names of two res-pected clericswere coupledwith the story,ma-king it even more credible and driving the an-xiety levels even higher. We all need to learnthat we should not believe implicitly what isseen on the internet. Be advised to rather readonly official publications having a reputationof distinguishing between fact and fiction” headvised.

Mr Basil Synodinos, CEO of President Hy-per, says the incident was captured on theshop’sCCTVand it is clear that themale clientcarried out a playful but irresponsible actionin picking up the child in front of his parents.

The video clip clearly shows that the childwas given back within seconds to the shockedmother.

Ruan Grobler (4) het op 15 Julie verlede jaar begin siek voel.Hy het medikasie gekry vir griep, maar het net sieker geword.Hy het gesukkel om te loop en het erge maagpyn gehad. Ruanse ouers, Christine en Paul het hom dokter toe geneem en hyhet net nog medikasie gekry. Ruan se bene het op 27 Julie 2014heeltemal ingegee en hy het gehuil van pyn. Nier- en lewerkan-ker is toe by hom gediagnoseer.

Ruan het vir vier weke chemoterapie ontvang by die LittleCompany of Mary Hospitaal in Pretoria en op 27 September2014 is een van sy niere in die Eugene Marais Hospitaal verwy-der. Centurion Motorfietsklub het reeds verskeie bydraes gele-wer om ‘n groot deel van Ruan se kostes te dek.Om sy ouers te help om die mediese onkostes te dek, word

‘n verjaardagpartytjie op 28 Maart vir Ruan gehou by Shake-spearstraat 19, CW 5 in Vanderbijlpark.

SEBOKENG. - Kingsol Tshababala of the Democratic Alli-ance - member of the provincial legislature (MPL) - wasjoined by local members to donate shoes to pupils of theMosioa and Mojalathuto Primary Schools.

Tshabalala said they were engaged by the party to encour-age pupils to pay attention to their studies. This could onlybe made easier by assisting with donations, he said:

“It is no use to always speak politics to the community.”He said the communities sometimes expect all kinds of

help from political parties:“We want to bring change for the better to the communi-

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is probablyone of the eye conditions I encountermost in my everyday life as an optom-etrist in the Vaal Triangle. I have beenpracticing here since 1997 and am al-ways surprised by how few people re-alise that they have an actual conditionthat needs to be treated on a daily basis.People generally complain that their eyesjust feel sore and tired, especially aftera long day in front of the computer, orburn a lot when reading and watchingTV. Here are some Dry Eye questionsanswered:What is a Dry Eye?Basically, it just means that there arenot enough tears in the eye. The natu-ral tear film keeps the surface of the eyemoist, lubricates the inside of the eye-lids (makes blinking comfy), nourish-es the eye and cleans and protects theeye by washing away foreign particles.It also keeps the corneal surface stableend even. This all means that when thetears stop working properly, your eyesno longer feel comfortable and your vi-sion becomes unstable.What does a Dry Eye feel like?Typical symptoms include:Burning sensationBlurred vision that comes and goesRed eyesSandy, gritty feeling in eyesEyes that tear a lot, especially when con-centratingIncreased light sensitivityDecreased contact lens toleranceWhite, stringy dischargeWhat causes Dry Eye?Dry Eye basically occurs if the tear pro-duction is inadequate or when tearsevaporate excessively. EnvironmentalFactors: fans; air conditioners; heat-ers; dry and windy climate conditions;working in dry and dusty environmentsLifestyle Factors: smoking; medica-

tions such as an-t i - d e p r e s s a n t s ,antihistamines, de-congestants, oralcontraceptives andmany more; focusingfor hours on a tablet,cell phone or com-puter orTV screen; excessivereading or needle-work; driving long distances regularlyPhysical Factors: aging (causes a nat-ural reduction in tear production); cer-tain medical conditions such as diabe-tes, arthritis, menopause, lupus, HIVand thyroid problems.What can be done about a Dry Eye?Lubricating eye drops and gels: Justas with any chronic condition you mightsuffer from, a dry eye needs to be treateddaily. A lubricating eye drop should beused. Make sure that it is formulated fora Dry Eye, and not for allergies or infec-tions. Remember a Dry Eye doesn’t goaway when you use the occasional drop,or when your eyes feel better. Dropsshould be used daily for as long as theenvironmental, lifestyle and physicalfactors listed above are present in yourlife. Supplements: Fish oils like Ome-ga 3, 6 and 9 and Flaxseed Oil are oftenrecommended.Proper sunglasses: Us-ing a quality pair of sunglasses helps re-duce the light sensitivity symptoms andkeeps the wind away from your eyes.Make sure the lenses have sufficient UVprotection. Polarized lenses are highlyrecommended.Humidifier: Use a hu-midifier in winter near burning heatersand fires and in summer when the air-con or fan is on. Not sure if you havea Dry Eye? NOTICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTIONOF K154 ROAD, MIDVAAL LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, GAUTENG PROVINCE.

Notice is hereby given in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, publishedin Government Notice No. R543 to R546 of 2010, in section 10(2) of the National EnvironmentalAct 107 of 1998, that an Environmental Authorisation dated 17 March 2015 has been granted bythe Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD). The Gauteng ProvincialDepartment of Roads and Transport propose to upgrade and re-align the existing K154 road locatedbetween Grace View Access Road and old Vereeniging Road, Midvaal Local Municipality.

The reasons for the decisions are detailed in full in the Environmental Authorisation which canbe obtained from Nemai Consulting however in summary the reasons include a) The informationcontained in the Scoping Report received by the Department on 27 May 2014 and EnvironmentalImpact Assessment Report received by the Department on 8 December 2014; b) Relevant informa-tion contained in the Departmental Information base including Gauteng Conservation Plan (C-PlanVersion 3.3) and the Geographical Information System (GIS); c) The objectives and requirementsof relevant legislation, policies and guidelines, including the principles contained in section 2 of theNational Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) and the objectives ofintegrated environmental management as set out in section 23 of NEMA; and d) The findings of thesite inspection undertaken by Kholofelo Matsela on 6 February 2015.

Parties have the right to appeal against the Environmental Authorisation in terms of Chapter 7 ofthe EIA regulations. Parties wishing to formally appeal this Authorisation must in accordance to theEnvironmental Authorisation lodge a notice of intention to appeal with the MEC, within 20 days of thedate of the Environmental Authorisation (by 8 April 2015). NOTICE: Notice is given in terms of the following legislation for the above mentioned project:• Government Notice No. R 544, Activity 27 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2010,

promulgated in terms of Section 24(5) of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No 107 of 1998);PROJECT DETAILS: Eskom Holdings SOC Limited is proposing the decommissioning of the existing dormantAtlas 400/275 kV Substation situated in Midvaal approximately 18km South East of Three Rivers, GautengProvince, as well as the existing dormant Matla-Atlas Powerline. The Altas 400/275 kV Substation was constructedin 1966. The Altas substation tied into the Matla and the Highveld Substations, therefore there were lines loopinginto the Atlas Substation from the Matla Substation (Matla Atlas Lines), and lines looping out of the Atlas Substationto the Highveld Substation (Atlas-Highveld lines). In the early 2000’s Eskom had to commence the decision makingprocess on whether to refurbish the Atlas Substation or whether to switch the substation off, as the infrastructureat the substation became dated. Eskom made the decision in 2003/2004 to switch the substation off. Since thesubstation was switched of, it remained dormant while Eskom had to decide whether this dormant substation willbe demolished, or whether this substation will be converted into a training centre where the substation will be usedas a simulation facility for Eskom employees for training purposes. Since the substation was switched off, the Atlas-Highveld lines have been demolished. The Matla-Altas lines are still present on site, and it is the intention of Eskomto demolish these lines when the Atlas Substation is demolished. Approximately 40km of lines will be demolished,and a total of 114 towers. Approximately 28km of the existing Matla-Atlas line is situated within the Midvaal LocalMunicipality in Gauteng Province, and the remainder of the line is situated in the Dipaleseng Local Municipalitywithin the Mpumalanga Province.
