You are a classroom teacher who has designed a lesson on area and circumference of circles. Your lesson plan includes students working with manipulatives, then using the Circle Tool interactive on the computer, and finally completing a worksheet to reinforce their skills.
As you can see, there are three different learning activities described which are all part of one lesson plan. A Verizon Thinkfinity Integration Plan is designed to focus on only the learning activity that uses the Verizon Thinkfinity resource.

Lesson Plan
Standards: National, State. Local, 21st Century
Objectives: Students will: • Calculate the ratio of circumference to diameter • Discover the formula for the
circumference of a circle
Learning Activities:
1. Hands-on - compass, paper
2. Partner - TF interactive
3. Worksheet
Assessment: Related to objectives

Let’s take a few minutes to become familiar with the resource, Circle Tool. Because we are already aware of the components of the Integration Plan, we can use the Integration Plan Template to provide the support we need to integrate the resource successfully into our lesson.

Who uses the resource - teacher? students? both?
What strategies are going to be used - cooperative learning? discovery approach?
What classroom configuration will work best to employ this activity?
What does this activity look like for students?
How will you know if the activity is successful?
There are several critical decisions we will need to make regarding the use of the Verizon Thinkfinity resource we have selected, such as:

Part ISelection
1.Topic/subject/grade level Area of a Circle/Math/6
2.Objective/standard Measurement 6-8
Develop and use formulas to determine the circumference, radius, diameter and the area of circles
3.Potential keywords: circle, radius, diameter
4.Verizon Thinkfinity resource(s) Circle Tool - http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=116
5.Notes about the resource(s) Interactive, several levels

1. Who will use the resource? Teacher demo/student exploration
2. What technology/materials/supplies/strategy will be used? Computer; projector; work stations; url for resource; chart to manage student
rotations and pairs; indirect instruction
3. When will the resource be used and for how long? after introduction to circles; approx. 5 mins to demo; 15 mins for pairs
4. Where will the resource be used? at the five workstations
in my classroom
5. Explain your vision for what students will do with the Verizon Thinkfinity resource. In groups of two, students will be assigned a computer with a link to the Circle Tool on the desktop. Taking turns, using the Investigations Tab, they will each create three circles with different diameters,
Part IIConsideration
adding the data to the on-screen table. They will discuss how the data changes with each experiment as they use the tool, and will try to predict results

1.How will you reach all students? Consider Learning Styles (Gardner); Work Styles (independent, pair, leader, follower, active, quiet, etc); Ability Levels (special needs, low, average, high, gifted)
Basic level students will select circles with a radius equal to a whole number; advanced students will select circles with a radius ending in a fractional part. The difficulty level can be adjusted for even greater challenge as needed. Students will work in pairs. High interest students may try additional circles.
2.Which of the following 21st Century Skills will apply: X Core Subject Focus Creativity X Problem-Solving X Communication X Collaboration
3.What behaviors will indicate that students are meeting with success in the activity? I will watch to see that students are moving the radius to the correct position
and that they can add the results to the data table. I will listen for words that indicate their recognition of patterns that form within their data table.

1. After transferring information to the Integration Plan Template, what questions, if any, remain that you need to consider?
Conduct a trial run of your activity as described in section 4A. Reflect upon the information you have gleaned from this experience.
If necessary, make revisions to your Integration Plan prior to implementing the activity with students.
