...great season...On Saturday night, October

3rd, under the lights at Poultney Elementary School, the season ended with a touchdown for the Equinox Football Flag team. This group of 5- to 7-year-olds made great strides under the guid-ance of coaches Jamie Briggs and Howard Morgan, who dis-played knowledge of the game, good humor, and real warmth in every interaction with their play-ers. They never yelled or scolded and were able to coax some great performances out of a bunch of rambunctious boys, most of whom didn’t even know the rules of the game when they arrived for the first practice. It was clear

that both coaches loved the game and really enjoyed working with kids. What more could you ask for? We’d like to thank Coach Briggs, his wife Stacy, and Coach Morgan for a fantastic season. As we tucked in our son Saturday night, he said, “I can’t wait to play again next year!”

...gratitude...My gratitude goes to Kathleen

McNamara and Keith McClure of the Manchester Rescue Squad for their skill in saving my life on Friday night September 7.

On that night, after dialing 911, Kathleen and Keith arrived quickly at my driveway in Dorset. Shortly after I entered the ambu-lance my heart stopped.

The quick action of the per-fect team of Kathleen and Keith shocked me and brought me back to life. The team stabilized me and carefully monitored me

as we drove to the hospital in Bennington. Kathleen and Keith were gracious, caring and excep-tionally skilled and were still present when I took a helicopter to Albany Medical.

Our community is extremely lucky to have the Manchester Rescue Squad looking out for us. I will never forget their profes-sionalism. Thank you Kathleen and Keith for your immediate and alert attention. I am well on the way to a full recovery!

...Susan and Jill...I look forward to Wednesdays

every week so that I can go to the post office and get my News Guide. It is a very well written and informative paper and I also love the ads for the tag sales. But that is not the reason for this let-ter. The second I get home with my paper I turn to my favorite columnist, Susan Coons. A few weeks ago I cried with her when her beloved Cleo passed away. As an avid pet lover I know the feel-ing only too well. There is noth-ing that anyone can do or say to make you feel better.

Time passes but the pain is always there. This week I picked up the paper as usual to read Susan’s column first. She had adopted a lovely and sweet dog that needed and deserved a good home.

As a pet lover I know that we do outlive our pets and each and every time one passes it gets harder and harder. There is always another animal out there that is in need of love and care and destiny will guide us to them. I know, it happened to me. I wish Susan and her new friend and companion the best of health and a very happy and devoted life.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in mili-tary discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fit-ness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Andrew and Debra Buckley of Birch Road, Greenwich, New York.

Buckley is a 2008 graduate of Cambridge Central School, New York.

Location Change for Garden Clubs’ Meeting

The Manchester-Arlington Garden Clubs’ joint meeting on October 21 will be held at Equinox Village instead of the First Congregational Church.

Jean Parker of Carlisle, Massachusetts, will demonstrate holiday centerpieces. She is a multi-talented gardener, designer, lecturer and author. She teaches courses in creative environments to garden clubs, church groups, colleges and professional organizations throughout New England.

Ms. Parker recently won first prize in a contest sponsored by the Massachusetts Flower Growers Association for her outstanding garden compositions and her commit-ment to gardening.

At her demonstrations she will present fresh and exciting ideas for enhancing holiday tables.

Green Beret Honored with Bronze Star

In August of 2009, Staff Sergeant John Lewis of Company B 1st Battalion 10th Special Forces Group was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Commendation Medal with Valor device for his ser-vice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom while stationed in Afghanistan. Lewis was also awarded the Non Article 5 NATO Medal of Service for his service with NATO Forces during his deployment in Afghanistan.

John is the son of Cary and Cindy Lewis of Manchester and a 2002 graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Rutland. Upon graduating from basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division for the initial invasion of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 3rd was one of the key groups involved in the securing of Baghdad. Lewis later served a second deployment in Iraq while stationed in Sumara.

Staff Sergeant Lewis achieved the status of Green Beret upon his graduation from the Special Forces qualification course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was then stationed in Germany and from there deployed to Afghanistan from October 2008 to May 2009. Following his deployment he returned to Germany and to his family, wife Samantha and daughter Madison. _____________________________________

Annual Welsh Harvest Festival SlatedThe annual Welsh Harvest Festival - featuring live music, traditional

Welsh food, field games and more - is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, at Green Mountain College.

The festivities kick off at 4 p.m. at the College’s Cerridwen Farm. Rain location for the festival is in the Gorge in Withey Hall.

Visitors can tour a haunted barn, sample Welsh delicacies, and par-ticipate in traditional autumn activi-ties including oxen-drawn hay rides, pumpkin painting, and scarecrow making. Musical performances include student ensembles per-forming acoustic Welsh, Celtic and American Folk songs. A bonfire is slated to bring the evening to a close around 8 p.m.

The Welsh Harvest Festival cel-ebrates the distinctive Welsh culture of Poultney and its surrounding communities. The event is free and open to the public.

Children’s Sabbath at First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church will be presenting a very special worship service on Sunday, October 18, to affirm our commitment to children in our congregation and everywhere. Children’s Sabbath Sunday was created 18 years ago by the Children’s Defense fund and its purpose is to acknowledge that children are sacred gifts from God and that we as adults bear responsibility for nurturing and protecting our children. Dorset Seniors LuncheonThe Dorset Seniors will meet at the Wilson House in East Dorset at

noon on Thursday, October 22 for a delicious lunch. A 50/50 raffle will follow the luncheon.

Susanne Rappaport will be guest speaker. She will be speaking about her farm which is called “The Second Cut Farm”. She raises sheep of dif-ferent breeds. Susanne shears her sheep and cares for them by herself.

Susanne is also the curator of the Dorset Historical Society. There will be time for questions following her talk.

Run by Husband and wife Steve and Donna Smith and run by 6 office staff and over 75 male and female CAREGivers, the agency offers personalized services to help seniors be able to stay in their own home or the setting that they now call home (Nursing Home, Assisted Living). Some of the services offered include meal prep, light housekeeping, personal care, running errands, and most importantly, companionship. “We are there to encourage and motivate

Steve and Donna started with Home Instead Senior CareÆ in 2001 and opened the South Street office at the beginning of 2001.

The office staff consists of Sylvia Les, who is the human resources direc-tor. Her job is to train and supervise all the CAREGivers. She said she is always looking to hire good people. Also on staff is Karen Calhoun, staff coordinator. She sets up the schedules for clients. Kris Decker is opera-tions director, who sets up

scheduling for new clients and is dedicated to them for the first month. Gina Isenhart is the outreach coordinator and is also an LPN. Her job is to educate the community as to what Home Instead Senior Care offers. She also does the assessments on new clients.

Another important staff member is Debbie Stillman who is administra-tive assistant. She answers the phones, greets walk-ins, makes sure other staff members have what they need and handles Accounts Receivable and Payable. Kathy Quinones is an RN. She is clinical care coordinator and does assessments and client care.

So together these people, along with the CAREGivers, and Elder Services, VNA, and Hospice work to keep clients in their own commu-nity, in their own homes or a place they now consider home.

Manchester Cropwalk for HungerThe Manchester Cropwalk will be held on Sunday, October 18, at

1 p.m. This is a nationwide project sponsored locally by the Interfaith Council of the Northshire that raises funds to help alleviate hunger both locally and globally. Last year $6800 was raised and 25 percent of the funds went to the summer lunch program sponsored by the Interfaith Council. One-hundred fifty-nine children from the Manchester area and 52 children from the Arlington area were provided with weekly bags of groceries during the summer months.

Our local congregations each have representatives whom you can contact. They are Muriel Roeth at 362-2067 from the Dorset Church, Leslie McCooey at 362-0032 from East Arlington Federated Church, Glenna Taxter at 362-2667 from the First Baptist Church, Tony Dee at 362-3298 from the First Congregational Church, Mickey Lisman at 362-4578 at Israel Congregation, Drew Campanella at 867-5535 from St. Paul’s Catholic Church, and Elizabeth Van Dyk at 867-5924 from Zion Episcopal Church. There will be participants from Long Trail School, with Shelly Tifft at 867-5717 as the contact person. Barbara Mench, 549-8202, is the contact person at Burr and Burton Academy, whose students will be assisting with the operational details of the walk.

Participants will meet at the First Congregational Church at 1 p.m., for registration and the opening ceremony followed immediately by the walk. If you would like to walk, form a team to walk or support a walker, contact one of the names mentioned above or Martha Thompson at 362-3473.

This is a wonderful way to support families in our community and also feel connected with people worldwide who struggle to care for their children and themselves.

Local Folks Help CFCNow that fall is upon us, the Communtiy Food Cupboard would like

to recognize and thank the many local young people who have taken the time to help their neighbors in need during the summer. In June, in lieu of end of the school year gifts, teachers Kathryn Darrow and Robin Sirois and assistants Pam Petry, John Dente and Jenn Grigsby suggested to the students that they send donations to CFC. The students took their request to heart and their contributions helped us to keep the cupboard stocked throughout the summer!

July brought gifts from the students of the Bill Muench Basketball Camp. The counselors helped to get kids involved by organizing a food drive contest which brought a truckful of food to CFC! Then in August, the Manchester Leos Club, the youth organization of the Lions Club, hosted their third “Fill a Bus” food drive at the Manchester Shaw’s Supermarket.

Under of the direction of Pam Nichols and with the support and assistance of Shaw’s manager Scott Dickie, the Leos encouraged shop-pers to donate items and load them up on a bus bound for CFC. We are so grateful for the generosity of all of these young people and for these amazing educators and leaders who are fostering their spirit of community.

Clothe the Children in Pawlet and Danby

Free new or gently used clothing for children ages infant to 12 plus years of age will be available Friday, October 16 and 23, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., or by appointment (call 802-325-3052) at the Morning Flower Lodge #71, Free and Accepted Masons of Pawlet, Vermont. The Masonic Lodge is located in the center of Pawlet across from the War Monument on the green across from Mach’s Market on Route 30. This “Clothe the Children,” “Warm Hands, Warm Hearts” is a Vermont non-profit organization sponsoring children’s clothing drives for Vermont’s most vulnerable citizens — our children. During the month of October, the Freemasons of Vermont are holding a clothing drive in order to assist the children residing in the multiple communities throughout the state that are in need of cloth-ing.

Marble Lodge #76 in Danby is heading up the drive in the Mt. Tabor – Danby area and will be holding a Distribution Day on November 7, at The Currier Memorial Elementary School in Danby from noon to 4 p.m.

From my Corner — by Susan J. Coons ...olympics... We were still living in Pasadena, California, when the Summer

Olympics were just beginning in 1984. Our neighbor’s daughter was one of the dancers who carried flags onto the field in the opening cer-emonies. She attended daily rehearsals, and there was much excitement among the kids and parents for this opportunity.

We watched as Los Angeles, Pasadena, and other surrounding com-munities geared up for this momentous event. Direction signs were installed on the freeways for the various venues; arenas were built and landscape architects were busy creating utopian environments. It brought jobs and new people to the area. And then there were the visi-tors. Many area residents made a killing by renting out their homes to visitors while they, themselves, left town. I designed a book cover for an author who wrote about how to make the most out of renting your home during the Olympics!

I’m a native of Chicago, and very macho about it. I love Chicago and it’s history. The people are friendly. It boasts a planetarium, science and history museum, art museums, aquarium, the el’s (elevated trains), subways, commuter trains, double-deck busses, hundreds of neighbor-hoods, and exciting architecture. There are beautiful waterfront parks and beaches, Wrigley Field, the Cubs, the Water Tower, the Palmer House, great restaurants, Old Chicago, Comiskey Park, the White Sox, Soldier Field and ‘da Bears. There are the stock yards, Chicago’s frontier history, Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, gangsters and prohibition. Man, I love Chicago! I’m proud to be from Mayor

Daly’s city; our President’s city. I don’t have any problem with President Obama taking a day trip to

Copenhagen to boast about his hometown. So many good things could happen as a result of the Olympics coming to North America. But, alas, it was not meant to be and the Summer Olympics will open in Rio.

I’m disappointed, but know that Brazilians will have the opportu-nity to benefit from this wonderful event. It will be wonderful for their economy. It will be an opportunity for the central government and local authorities to deal with their disastrous crime issue. New build-ings and parks will sprout up, easing their unemployment and poverty problems.

I do have one very great disappointment, and that is the number of Americans who were hoping that the President would fail in his attempt to influence the Olympic Committee. Seeing those people cheering and clapping against our President and our country was astonishing and disheartening. There is a slice of the American populace that just doesn’t want President Obama to succeed at anything. Nothing. Even if it will help our country reverse the rate of unemployment, help stabilize our economy, and give fel-low Americans the benefit of the same kind of health care offered to government employees (paid for by our taxes). The meanness of “Just say no” will eventually come back to bite them, and you know where!

Heartworks Gearing UpWe are back in action! After taking the summer off the local chapter

of Heartworks is ready for this year.Heartworks is a group of local women that come together to do acts

of kindness for people in our community. We have been serving our community for almost two years providing support for our neighbors facing unexpected challenges.

On October 9 and 10 Heartworks had bake sales at some Burr and Burton games. All proceeds will be sent to The National Kidney Foundation for the Bridgette Eicchorn Fund. Bridgette, who lives in Winhall, was recently diagnosed in the final stages of kidney failure. We’re hoping to raise money to help her family offset some of the medi-cal expenses that lay ahead.

Next month, on November 14, we will have our second annual clothes drive. Last year we had a gymnasium full of clothes to offer to families in need and this year we hope to do the same. All free! Heartworks would like to thank the local businesses and volunteers who helped make our Bike Bike and Trike fundraising event so successful including Jan Kelly of New Morning Natural Foods, Price Chopper, Shaw’s, Kerri Barry of Stratton, Maple Street School, and the many volunteers. We also want to take the time to thank Fran Fratino-Heberts of the Hair Retreat. She recently organized a “Locks for Love” event and donated the proceeds to Heartworks. This money was used to offer sup-port to two local families who are currently undergoing medi-cal emergencies.

Jennie called and asked me to take her to Mad Tom Orchard as she has picked their apples for years now and likes them. She prefers to pick up the drops so they don’t go to waste. It was a beautiful day and I took her for a drive around the block to Danby and Pawlet and then back home. She had never been on Colvin Hill Road in Danby so I took that route. The scenery and foliage were excellent.

Long Trail School Parent Association Golf Tournament a Success!

The Long Trail School Parent Association extends our deepest grati-tude to The Equinox Resort, Express Copy, Johnson Illington Advisors, LLC, Legg Mason Investment Counsel, LLC, and Rutland Regional Medical Center for their sponsorship of the Irene and Bing Hunter Memorial Golf Tournament in Support of Scholarship on September 13 at The Golf Club at the Equinox. The sold-out event was full of happy golfers in competition against each other and the challenges of the course.

The proceeds, more than $10,000, benefited the scholarship fund. For the first time, the tournament offered three divisions: Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed. Men’s first low gross (57) was awarded to Long Trail School history teacher Tim Smith and teammates Matt Gammons, Dan Cole, and Nick Romano. Former LTS Headmaster David Wilson and team-mates Kevin O’Toole, Brian Keefe, and Wayne Bell won Men’s first low net (48.6). J.J. Keyser, Annie Keyser, Debbie Wight and Bill Wight won Mixed first low gross (63), and mixed first low net (54.4) was won by Fred Hammer, Ann Hammer, Bob Thompson and Di Thompson.

Ladies’ first low net (53.1) was won by Anne Brett, Pat Fowler, Betsy Perrott and Pat Barnett. Additional awards were given for contests on the course. Mike Lynn won closest to the line. Dan Cole won the Joseph Amedeo Rizio Precision Short Game Trophy for coming closest to the pin. Ladies’ closest to the pin was won by Cathy Long. Casey Smith won the putting contest.

Burr and Burton Academy Seniors Receive National Merit Scholarship

Recognition Burr and Burton Academy Headmaster Mark Tashjian recently

announced that seniors Maxwell Hausslein, Charlotte Salsgiver, and Nancy Seem have been named Commended Students in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program for their outstanding academic achievement. This award was given to 34,000 students out of over 1.5 million high school juniors nationwide who entered the 2008 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“We salute the high achieve-ment of these young scholars,” said Headmaster Tashjian. “Their recognition is the result of their strong aptitude and consistent work ethic.”

BBA Girls’ Varsity Soccer Pizza Cook-OffThe Burr and Burton Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team will be hosting a

JISP Sign-Up in Arlington JISP (Junior Instructional Ski/Snowboard Program) sign-ups will be

held on Wednesday, October 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Fisher Elementary School.

This alpine ski and snowboard program, offered by Bromley Outing Club, is available for grades 3 through 12. It runs for 10 weeks starting Wednesday, January 6, and ends Wednesday, March 17.

Program fees for the season will be $85 per student with a maximum of $255 per fam-ily with three or more JISPers. In addition, a $5 mandatory transportation fee is required to be paid at time of sign-ups. Equipment rentals will be avail-able at Bromley for the JISP sea-son. There will be information for this at sign-up.

KAP (Kids Alpine Program) will also be available to Arlington area children ages 6 through 8 (as of January 1, 2010) on Wednesdays during the JISP pro-gram. Information and applica-tions for this program will be available at sign-up.

“Passport to Health - Diabetes Expo”The Rutland Region Diabetes and Endocrinology Center has com-

Battenkill Conservancy River Watch Coordinator Discovers

Zebra Mussel Colony in the BattenkillBattenkill Conservancy River Watch Coordinator Kelly Nolan’s envi-

ronmental firm, Watershed Assessment Associates, discovered a colony of zebra mussels in the Battenkill while performing field sampling for the Battenkill Conservancy on September 22. Nolan and his staff, Research Scientist Karen Stainbrook and Taxonomist Chris Fishel, were on their lunch break near the Georgi Museum when Fishel made the initial discovery. Nolan and his staff returned to the area twice to verify their findings. They have notified both the New York and Vermont Departments of Environmental Conservation.

Zebra mussels are commonly introduced by boaters and anglers, though it’s unclear how the mus-sels were introduced into the river. There is a known popula-tion of zebra mussels in Hedges Lake, which is downstream from the newly discovered colony. Cambridge Central School science teacher Steve Butz, who has been monitoring the Hedges Lake out-flow with his students for years, reported to Nolan that they have not detected mussels in the out-flow.

J. K. Adams Program for the Dorset Historical Society

“J.K. Adams: Sixty-five Years of Woodworking” will be the topic for the Annual Meeting Program of the Dorset Historical Society. This event will be held at the Long Trail School kiva, Wednedsay, October 28, at 7:30 p.m.

Most of us know J. K. Adams as an extraordinary kitchen store and the host of promotional cooking demonstrations dishing out tantalizing foods. But its roots lie with a wooden toy, drafting tables and easels.

In 1944, Josiah K. Adams opened a woodworking business in Dorset in the Jones Garage opposite Maple Hill Cemetery (formerly Dr. Michl’s office). Its first prod-uct was a wooden pull toy called a Speedy Racer, one of which is in the collection at the Dorset Historical Society. The busi-ness moved to its present loca-tion, formerly the South Dorset Ice House, on Route 30, south of Dorset village in 1945. After Malcolm E. Cooper, Sr. became a partner in 1949, the firm added production of wooden platters,

cutting boards, chopping blocks, surveyor tools, and Kiwi shoe groomer boxes. Fire destroyed the J.K. Adams factory Friday, April 13, 1962. A year later the plant was back in operation.

Today J.K. Adams is the only manufacturing business left in Dorset. It makes over 160 products, ships over 400,000 to mail order and retail stores and employs 65 people. It opened its second Kitchen Store in Stowe, Veremont just this spring. Company president Malcolm E. Cooper, Jr. will share his memories of growing up in Dorset and in the production rooms of the J.K. Adams business.

Oil and Pastel Landscape Paintings at Canfield Library

We were so excited, we got a little ahead of ourselves in our previ-ous notice. The reception to meet artists Annie and Virginia McNeice at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington, Vermont, will be held on Saturday, October 17 from 3–5 p.m., not October 3 as previously reported. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Their recent landscape paintings are on view through November 6.

Annie McNeice has been a practicing artist and educator in the Cambridge and Bennington areas for the last 15 years, currently teaching drawing and painting at Mount Anthony High School in Bennington, Vermont. Her personal work focuses on local landscapes.

Virginia McNeice is an artist who works in pastel on paper and oil on canvas. Her primary focus is on color relationships, contrast, and the effects created by natural light at various times of the day. Her artwork can be seen at the Valley Artisans Market in Cambridge, New York, and in Vermont at the Wright Gallery in Wilmington and the Furchgotte-Sourdiffe Gallery in Shelburne. She offers workshops in pastel and oil at her studio in Cambridge, New York.

Meet At MSL for ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’

Delight in seeing “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” at the Mark Skinner Library: Manchester’s Public Library on Wednesday, October 21 at 7 p.m. The Oscar-winning film classic was based loosely on the 1958 novella by Truman Capote and stars Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Mickey Rooney, and Martin Balsam.

Audrey Hepburn plays that daring and darling cultural icon, Holly Golightly - a socialite with a sordid past, who falls for and inspires Paul Varjan (Peppard), a struggling writer in this mod New York romance.

Copies of the book are for loan at the Mark Skinner Library. Holly Golightly was Capote’s favorite character and is his most memorable. Norman Mailer called Capote “the most perfect writer of my gen-eration” adding he “would not have changed two words of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’”.

The Influence of Van GoghGreen Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning presents “Vincent

Van Gogh: His Influence on 20th Century Art” with Carol Berry-Marchand. This powerpoint lecture will take place on Thursday, October 15 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Manchester Village, Vermont. Registration fee is $20.

Vincent Van Gogh had a major influence on Expressionism in the early 20th century. Van Gogh developed an art form that communi-cated his personal insights and beliefs. This was a tremendous shift from the traditional art sanctioned by the French Academy during his lifetime. The course will focus on Van Gogh’s intense desire to use art as a way to engage people on a personal and deeper level. It will include a short biography of Van Gogh and focus on those artworks which opened the doors for future artists to experiment with art as a personal form of expression. Artworks of the 1800s and early 1900s will be compared to discover the (r)evolution of art making that took place, reflecting Vincent Van Gogh’s attempts to integrate art more meaning-fully into the reality of daily life.

Carol Berry-Marchand is an artist and art educator who studied Van Gogh’s life with Henri J.M. Nouwen, the late Roman Catholic priest, author, and professor at Yale Divinity School. She has spent the last ten years researching, lecturing and developing a deeper understanding of the artist’s intense desire “to touch some people” and why this desire compelled him to create works of art to the detriment of his own well-being. Singer Kathy Beaver at the Cabaret at Fort Salem Theater Singer Kathy Beaver returns to Fort Salem Theater with her new

cabaret show, “I’m Flying,” for one night only, Saturday, October 17, at 8 p.m.

Ms. Beaver, who last appeared on a Salem stage in “Always, Patsy Cline,” in August, 2006, was for several years the theater’s artistic direc-tor before Fort Salem was sold to its current owners later that year. A working New York City violinist in the off-season, Beaver was starring

in “Gypsy” in California right after selling the theater when she miss-stepped and fell off stage, severely injuring her violin-play-ing arm.

That’s where “I’m Flying” takes off. Unable to make a living in her accustomed way, Kathy Beaver had an immediate need to seek alternative employment. Since she had pursued one of her life’s dreams and become a work-ing musician, work that needed to go on hold, she jumped into
