Wells Senior Meals

The Wells Senior Meal Site is located in the Modern Woodman Annex Building on Route 30 in Wells. Meals are served Monday, Wednesday and Friday and res-ervations can be made by call-ing either Charlotte at 325-3293 or Dot at 645-0330 one day in advance. Suggested donation is $3.25 per senior. These meals are open to any senior within a 15 to 20 mile area.

Monday, January 25: oven fried chicken breast, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots with oatmeal bread and applesauce with cin-namon for dessert.

Food Shelf Drive at Arlington

Basketball GamesThe Arlington Memorial

High School (AMHS) Student Council is sponsoring a food drive at two home basketball games this month. On January 21 and 22, admission to the Eagles’ games will be two non-perishable items for students and five non-perishable items for adults. All donations of food or other non-perishable items, such as soap and shampoo, will benefit the Arlington Food Shelf. Regular admission fees will be charged for those who do not bring items.

On January 21, the Junior Varsity Boys’ team will play Green Mountain at 6 p.m. followed by the Varsity Boys’ game at 7:30 p.m. The next night, the Varsity Girls play Poultney beginning at 7 p.m.

Tinmouth Contra DanceStart the New Year right with a contra dance led by the hot tunes of

Colin Stanistreet and Max Newman (two young Boston musicians) with Brendan Taaffe calling on Friday January 22 at 8 p.m. at the Tinmouth Community Center. Exuberant dancing for people of all ages!

What is a Contra Dance? A contra dance uses square dance moves, but is done in long lines to live music. All dances are taught and you do not need a partner. Beginners are always welcome. Dances become more challenging as the night progresses, so early arrival is recom-mended for beginning dancers!

The dance takes place in the Tinmouth Community Center, Route 140 in the center of Tinmouth, Vermont, five miles west of Wallingford. Dancing takes place every fourth Friday of the month.

Figure and Portrait Drawing Course at The Clark

Drape, fold, swish, and figure. Giovanni Boldini’s paintings excite the eye and spark the imagination. Using the mood and style of the master Boldini as inspiration, local artist David Lane will teach the basics of figure and portrait drawing at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Work from live models during this eight session course held on Sundays, February 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21, and 28, at 10 a.m. Basic supplies are provided. Cost is $150 ($125 for members). Lane has studied with well-known Berkshire landscape painter John MacDonald and internationally known color-theorist Dan Thompson at the Grand Central Academy of Art in New York. Since 2006, he has devoted himself to classical technique — drawing and painting the fig-ure, still life and landscape — exploring connections between contem-porary concerns and historical approaches. Lane almost always works directly from life, and is concerned with creating work with atmosphere that evokes a mood, depicts a visual impression, or captures a fleeting moment. He teaches regularly at Northern Berkshire Creative Arts, the Clark, and offers drawing and painting classes out of his studio in the Eclipse Mill. Lane holds a BFA from the University of Calgary and an MFA in theatre from Sarah Lawrence College and when he’s not paint-ing, he can be found teaching theatre at the University at Albany.

Through approximately seventy oil paintings and drawings, Giovanni Boldini in Impressionist Paris presents an innovative look at Boldini’s Paris — its places of entertainment and leisure, its inhabitants, and its environs — at a time when the Impressionists were investigating the same sites and subjects.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 p.m. (daily in July and August). New Members for Library BoardThe Mark Skinner Library Board of Trustees recently welcomed two

new members to its ranks. “We are pleased to welcome Rob Hunter and Rob Lemonik to the board” announced Pauline Moore, MSL Board President.

Rob Hunter has been teaching high school English for nineteen years — 14 of them at Burr and Burton Academy. In addition, he is a writer. His poems have appeared in many literary journals, and his first volume of poetry was published by Spoon River Poetry Press in 2005.

Rob Lemonik is a partner with the CPA firm of Engel Spivey Lemonik, PC. He has worked in public accounting for more than twen-ty years specializing in small business and individual tax planning and preparation. Lemonik has volunteered with various local non-profit organizations, including Hildene and Dorset Players since moving to Manchester in 2003. Lemonik currently serves as a board member for the Vermont Society of CPAs.

Moore would like to remind the Manchester community that Mark Skinner Library board meetings take place on the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. and are open to the public. We will be serving (and eating!) a delicious supper at The Dorset Church, 143 Church Street, (off Route 30) on Wednesday, January 20. Dinner will be held from 5:30 -7:30 p.m.

Our experience with Winter Community Suppers was so well received that we decided to host hearty suppers four times during the long winter. Ever-Readys Make Music at Equinox Terrace

Good old-timey mountain music was heard at the Terrace recently when four members of the Ever-Readys band entertained residents for an afternoon. Nick Spiro on banjo and guitar, Sumio Seo on fiddle, Harold Edmunds on guitar, and Ellen Maloney on banjo played and sang from an extensive repertoire of tunes, including “Hard Times,” “Lonesome Road,” “Frankie and Johnny,” “Five Feet Two,” “Bill Bailey,” and many more. Toes tapped and heads nodded in time to the sturdy rhythms and irresistible melodies produced by this talented group.

Jay Peak Resort Gives the Gift of Skiing to 300 Military Families

Jay Peak Resort has announced plans to give back to the community, following Vermont’s recent National Guard deployment. This January, the families of those deployed in Franklin, Orleans, Caledonia and Lamoille counties will receive season passes to the resort. Each member of the immediate family will be given a pass, as well as a price reduction on rentals and lessons; a 50 percent discount on equipment rentals, and free skiing or riding lessons in the afternoons, space permitting.

Upon praise for the generosity of this donation, Jay Peak Resort President Bill Stenger responded, “Why would we do something so remarkable? Because the commitment the National Guard is making is profound, their generosity cannot be matched. We need to do our part.”

Joy of the RecorderGreen Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning presents The Joy of

the Recorder with Julie Freebern on four Wednesdays, February 3, 10, 24, and March 3 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The classes will be held in the music room at Burr and Burton Academy’s Riley Center for the Arts.

Never thought you could play an instrument — or haven’t played in a while? Here’s your chance to make beautiful music with a recorder, a user-friendly instrument that’s well suited to a wide range of musi-cal genres — from Baroque to popular songs. Learn how to play the recorder for the very first time or refresh your memory. All levels of experience and all ages are welcome! Music and instruments will be provided; or bring your own. A performance opportunity will be available to those who are interested. The 10 member Emerald Valley Recorder Ensemble (born from last year’s class!) will team teach this class.

Julie Freebern is a music educator who teaches in the Performing Arts Department at Burr and Burton Academy where she directs the chorus and instructs music history. She is a founding member of the Northshire Early Music Ensemble.

...full body scan...When I first started flying I was

18 and that flight was on a sea-plane. I love to fly. In the 1960s when I was flying from Los Angeles to Chicago, Miami, New York, Washington D.C. or the Bahamas, I carried a make-up overnight case, garment bag, hair dryer, and Samsonite suitcase. All my luggage was checked except my garment bag, which I handed to the stewardess when I boarded the plane. Motion pictures on the 1930s, 40s, and 50s created a mystique and drama of fly-ing. My husband always wore a suit, sometimes three-piece, and tie and I wore a dress, nylon stockings, heels, hat and gloves. Flying was a spe-cial and somewhat formal event. No jeans, shorts, or sneakers. We had drinks in the lounge while we waited to board the plane. Once boarded we sat in leather seats that were wide and comfortable with only two on each side of the aisle. The pull-down trays were larger, and when they were pulled down, there was still room to move around in your seat. (Of course, I was thinner then!) We were served magnificent meals that included dessert, and two drinks.

Flying was still fun in the 1970s. I took the kids along to the airport to see my husband off on business trips. They watched as the plane taxied down the runway and ascended into the sky.

By the time I flew to Albany from Los Angeles in 1983, the plane then sat three seats on each side of the aisle, the trays were smaller, and the distance from seat to seat front to back, was narrower. Pity the guy who had a window seat and had to use the lavatory. They still served a meal on cross-country flights, but it was meager.

Today the planes are not only cramped with many more seats per aisle, but there are no meals. You can’t bring your own beverage on board. We have to take off our shoes, pass everything through the scan-ners, sometimes we’re patted down after going through screening, we open our suitcases for investigation, and now we’re going to be exposed to a full body screen. Holy Cow!

There are so many ways to “look” at the prospect of “exposing” myself to a full body scan.

First, I will tell you that from viewing one naked body after another in an eight-hour stretch the scanner will surely be aghast at the sight and eager to punch out at the end of the day. I think if I had that job I would sit in the dark when I get home, and try to put the memory of what I’ve seen out of my mind with a good, strong Rusty Nail. There are very few well-toned bodies in the world. Ninety-nine percent of us are out of shape with the natural sagging of age, the addition of pounds, surgeries, wrinkles, and the scars and scrapes of living.

Screening offers an unlimited supply of naked body jokes. Just sitting here, at the computer I can think of several which I won’t tell you. This is a family paper, after all! My son did say that next time he comes to visit, he’s going to wear his underwear on the outside.

I don’t know anyone my age who has a perfect body, man or woman. Shakespeare spoke of the old duffer wearing hose on shrunken shanks. Sagging socks.

Aging gracefully? Well, I guess so. My mind is still good. I have a good attitude about life. If I was young and lovely, I don’t think I would mind the full body scan except for the sake of modesty. Now it’s no longer only modesty that rules but extreme embarrassment.

Oh well. If they can stand it, so can I. I feel like I should buy the screener a drink or something for exposing her to such a catastrophic view.

Happy Days Playschool’s Nature Art Show at Canfield Library

What an exciting, refreshing way to begin the art exhibition season at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington, Vermont, with a nature art show by children ages 1–10 from Happy Days Playschool! The children’s art display will be on view from February 2 through 26. Come to the opening reception on Saturday, February 6 from 3–5 p.m.

The children, ages 1–5, have been participating in an artist-in-residence program this year with Kim Ray, a local muralist from Londonderry, Vermont. The nature art show will consist of photo collages, posters, and note cards that depict nature art designs and creations made by those children, as well as the students ages 5–10 who attend Happy Days’ After-school Program and have also created nature art with their teachers

The students’ artwork will be for sale, with proceeds going to both nonprofit organizations, Happy Days and the Martha Canfield Library. The Art and Sculpture in the Natural Environment residency has been made possible by grant funding received from The Vermont Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, LEGO Children’s Fund, and the Stratton Foundation. Happy Days Playschool provides a quality early education/childcare program in a consistent, caring and positive atmosphere using a family-centered approach.

The Canfield Gallery is located in the Martha Canfield Library on East Arlington Road across from Arlington High School. Mettawee Holds Geo Bee Championship

The Mettawee Community School held its Geo Bee Championship on Tuesday, January 12. Nine classroom winners, from grades 4-6, took part: (4th graders) Jeremy Amaral, Trenton Mychack, Catherine Thrasher; (5th graders) Nadia Cox, Asia Rees, Alex Sperelakis; and (6th graders) Cole Morse, Izzy Rees and Eaden Ryan. 6th grade classroom

winner Emily Couper was absent on the day of the school champion-ship and was not able to participate. All will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

Based on the number of correct answers after the first round of ques-tions, the contestant group was reduced to the following four students: Morse, Mychack, I. Rees, and Thrasher. Another elimination followed the second round of questions. There was a tie for 3rd place between Morse and Mychack. That left Izzy Rees and Catherine Thrasher to take part in the championship round of questioning.

After six questions, in an exciting tie-breaker, 4th grader Catherine Thrasher answered the final question correctly to be named Mettawee Community School’s 2010 Geo Bee winner.

Thrasher will next take the necessary written geography test in order to qualify for the Vermont Geo Bee to be held later this spring in Montpelier.

The Geo Bee was emceed by school principal Nancy Mark and judged by teachers Mark Rampone and Jennifer Bloomingdale.

Arlington Community Ice Skating PartyThe members of Red Mountain Masonic Lodge will hold their annu-

al Community Ice Skating Party on Saturday, January 23, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Arlington Ice Skating Rink on Route 313.

After donning the Lincoln hats they have made, the children will parade up to the mansion to see one of Abe’s real stovepipe hats on display as part of the exhibit, “The American Ideal: Abraham Lincoln and the Second Inaugural.”

Lincoln Essay Contest Winners Feted at Equinox Luncheon

This year’s Hildene luncheon celebrating Lincoln’s birthday and hon-oring the winners of the fourth annual Lincoln Essay Competition takes place at the Equinox Resort on January 30 at noon. The keynote speaker will be Charlie Smith of the Snelling Center for Government. Smith will address students, teachers, parents and guests on the importance of instilling the principles of good governance and civic responsibility, and how Abraham Lincoln, in word and deed, exemplified the same. The speaker and his topic are particularly appropriate in light of the fact that the challenge posed for this year’s competition involved an examination of Lincoln’s motives as leader, when he made his famous response to an outspoken critic of his policies regarding slavery in 1862.

Participating young eighth grade writers were asked to submit an essay of no more than 500 words explaining why President Lincoln wrote his response to “The Prayer of the Twenty Millions,” an open letter written to him in the press by abolitionist and influential editor of the New York Tribune, Horace Greeley. The letter called upon the president to free the slaves as a way of weakening the confederacy. 88 students from 14 schools, representing seven counties throughout Vermont responded by submitting their essays, from which an independent panel of judges from Vermont’s four corners selected the winners.

Upon graduation from Harvard College in 1978, featured speaker Charlie Smith embarked on a journey that would take him from the halls of Vermont state government to the offices of corporate America and back to Vermont to serve in the Douglas Administration from 2003 to 2006. He served first as Secretary of the Agency of Human Services and then as Secretary of Administration. From mid 2006 to 2009, Smith was called upon to apply his myriad leadership experiences to his role as President of the Snelling Center for Government whose “mission is to foster responsible and ethical civic leadership, encourage public service by private citizens, and promote informed citizen participation in shap-ing public policy in Vermont.” His lifelong commitment to leadership makes him well suited for the presentation at a luncheon honoring one of our nation’s greatest leaders and celebrating those of the future.

The first, second and third place winners will read their essays at the event. All eight winners will receive their awards: $1,000, first prize; $750 second prize; $500 third prize and $200 each for five honor-able mentions. The Lincoln Essay Competition and annual Lincoln’s Birthday Luncheon are sponsored by Spiral Press Café and The Perfect Wife Restaurant.

‘Great Decisions 2010’Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning is offering Great

Decisions 2010 – A Hot Topics Discussion Group on every other Thursday beginning February 11 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the confer-ence room at the Spiral Press Café in Manchester Center, Vermont. This group will be moderated by GMALL board member Monica Knorr. The participants will also be asked to take turns leading the discus-sions.

The group will follow the “Great Decisions” book published by the Foreign Policy Association. Topics this year will include Special Envoys, the Global Financial Crisis, U.S. – China Security Relations, Russia and Its Neighbors, and more. Ivan Beattie is Speaker at

Historical Society Meeting

The Manchester Historical Society will present a talk by Ivan Beattie on the history of the Morgan horse on January 20, at 7 p.m., at the First Congregational Church. Beattie is manager of East of Equinox Farm in Manchester, which has been dedicated since 1958 to the preservation of the traditional Morgan horse.

The Morgan tradition began when Justin Morgan brought a young stallion named Figure to Vermont in the late 1700s. The horse quickly gained a reputation for being able to out-pull, out-trot, out-run and basically out-perform all the other horses of his time, regardless of their size or pedigree. His direct descendants were referred to as the “Morgan” horse, and they quickly became highly sought after because of their inherent ability to do any-thing and do it well.

Generous Acts of Kindness Make an Impact

Since Tuesday afternoon’s earthquake, Pure Water for the World has received many offers of assistance in its effort to help the people of Haiti. A group of radio stations is raising funds to rebuild the water pro-gram in schools in Cite Soleil. A documentarian will travel through the Dominican Republic to reach Haiti. A group of Burlington, Vermont doctors came together to form the “PWW Medical team.” Many profes-sionals are offering their services to help in whatever way they can and there are offers of help to rebuild our Port-au-Prince filter facility.

Here is a story that touched our hearts. From the Tooth Fairy to Haiti: A Young Vermonter’s Act of LoveOn Thursday afternoon, the Pure Water for the World staff in

Rutland received a visit from a young girl. Five year old Ebe Fernandez had learned of PWW’s work in Haiti

and the urgent need for clean water following Tuesday’s earthquake. She made a decision that belies her young age when she asked her parents, Phil and Erin Fernandez of Rutland, if she could donate her tooth fairy money and other savings to PWW. She arrived at the PWW office with $65.33 in a small plastic bag and proudly presented her gift to PWW’s Executive Director, Carolyn Meub. Moved to tears by the generosity of this young donor, Meub expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming generosity of the friends of PWW during this unprecedented effort to continue bringing clean water to Haiti.

Update on PWW Family in Haiti PWW staff members remain in Haiti following Tuesday’s disaster

and have been tirelessly working under desperate conditions to set up water filters in Port-au-Prince.

David Putt, Sebestien and Marie-Paule DeMarre, Roman Cipus and staff have been able to access the salvageable filters from the factory. On Thursday they distributed 40 ceramic and 3 sand filters to a medical clinic near the PWW staff house.

They report that food and water continue to be in critical shortage, aid groups are having difficulty getting into the city, and most people are living on the streets. As of now, we have not heard from three of our staff. We hope it is only a communication issue and nothing more.

The remaining staff members are very tired, but are well. They are committed to continuing PWW’s work, especially at this critical time when basic services remain largely unavailable. They are helping the wounded and bringing comfort to those who have lost so much.

Grace Cottage to Host ‘Ask the Doctor’ Sessions

Do you have a medical topic that you would like to learn more about? Grace Cottage Hospital is offering you that opportunity. Grace Cottage Internist Dr. Evan Ginsberg will host two question-and-answer ses-sions, with topics based on whatever medical questions the audience would like to pose.

These two sessions are open to the public, free of charge. They will be held on Monday, January 25, 1:30-3:00 p.m., and on Wednesday, February 3, 6:00-7:30 p.m., in Grace Cottage Hospital’s Community Wellness Center, 133 Grafton Rd., Townshend. Refreshments will be served.

This past week I heard from several readers wondering where all their birds had gone and what to feed those coming to their feeders. Sue Mellen from Danby is seeing fewer birds since the storm and wonders why her birds are not taking Niger seed. Before the big snow storm we still had “summer birds” here. Many of them have probably left now for warmer climes and we are still waiting for the “winter birds” to arrive from the north. In years of plentiful natural foods (cones and fruit) many of the northern birds don’t need to come south.

As to what to feed, if one can only put out one food, I sug-gest black oil sunflower seed. It is small, doesn’t leave much mess to clean up in the spring, is liked by many species and best of all is a high energy food. It is best to use it in a hanging feeder. A mixed seed with some corn and sunflower seed, perhaps some peanuts, and safflower seed is also good. Look at the ingredients because some companies add millet, oats and fill that most birds do not eat and

Bird Walk at Hildene

The next bird walk at The Lincoln Family Home in Manchester will be Saturday, January 23, meeting at the Visitor’s Center at 8 a.m. This begins the second full year of monitoring the wild bird popula-tion on the grounds of Hildene where 118 species have been recorded so far. Birding checklists for the Hildene grounds are also available. Warm clothes are man-dated; snowshoes are optional. Because of the varied habitats - deciduous and evergreen forests, open fields, wetlands and feeders, Hildene is a perfect environment to attract most of the bird species breeding in or migrating through Vermont.

The dates for upcoming sur-veys in 2010 are February 13, March 13 and April 10.

Bird walks are open to all and are beginner to advanced to fam-ily friendly. Binoculars are avail-able to borrow. Please contact Randy at the Vermont Bird Place for more information, 362-2270.

Pets of the Week

Shadow is an 8 1⁄2 year old long haired male. His owner could no longer take care of him after they had a premature baby. He is declawed and an indoor cat only. Shadow is a mellow, friend-ly cat that likes attention. Please come meet our tolerant, loveable guy.

R u s t y is a 1 year old Vizsla mix who found him-self home-less when his owner went to jail. A r l i n g t o n A n i m a l C o n t r o l took him in, got him neutered, vaccinated and ultimately brought him to Second Chance to find his for-ever home. Rusty is active, cuddly and affectionate. A very smart and alert boy, Rusty would ben-efit by exercising frequently and by working on brain activity. Rusty will require basic obedi-ence training, as he only knew “sit” before coming to Second Chance. Extensive socialization will be necessary and extremely beneficial for Rusty, since he can be quite timid and fearful of strangers. Luckily, Rusty has the capability to bond quickly.

it will go to waste. This mixture is best tossed out on the ground for the ground-feeding birds like sparrows, doves and juncos. The simplest way to offer suet is to hang it in mesh onion bags. I like to buy (very clean, white) suet at the store and render it down. It is harder, lasts longer and seems to discourage starlings if you have them. I usually have a couple of suet cakes from the store for emergency use, but again they are made with fill and I think plain suet is best. Thistle, now called Niger (and spelled many ways), is good but seems to get old fairly quickly. My birds will not eat it if it is stale. It should be hung from a limb or a hook if possible. It is a good source of energy for birds but is very expensive. Some peo-ple put out bread, fruit and meat scraps but be careful about doing this as you may end up attracting animals you don’t want to host in your yard.

After mentioning black squir-rels in my last column I had sev-eral conversations with readers: Kathy Taylor in Arlington also sees them, Claire Bachman called to say she sees them behind the post office in Manchester and Linda Satter of Manchester sees them in her yard.

Barbara O’Donnell reported that her dog dug up a dead owl while she and her husband were snowshoeing in Peru. This is always sad to hear but part of

Missoula Childrens Theatre to present ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’

After the success of “Hansel and Gretel”, “The Pied Piper of Hamelin,”and “Cinderella,” The Dorset Players are delighted to announce that the Missoula Children’s Theatre Company will be back to present a delightful musical adaptation of “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

Dorset Players to hold auditions for ‘Guys and Dolls’

The Dorset Players are pleased to announce that auditions for their spring musical production, “Guys and Dolls,” will take place on Monday, January 25 and Tuesday January 26 at 7 p.m. at the Dorset Playhouse on Cheney Road in Dorset, Vermont. Based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon, music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, “Guys and Dolls” is a classic from the golden age of musical comedy, set on the colorful and tawdry Broadway neighborhood of the 1940s made famous in many of Runyon’s short stories.

Director Steve Sinding and music director Linda Hueckel are looking to fill around 15 male and 9 female roles, plus singers and dancers to fill out the onstage cho-rus. All the characters are adults.

Those auditioning are asked to bring clean dry shoes with them and will be given a short singing and/or dancing routine to per-form.
