Why is my child taking PARCC?• PARCC is part of the state and federally-funded program of

education provided to your child at HBW. • New Jersey has had a long history of establishing state standards

for instruction and assessment to help schools ensure that students are meeting educational goals.  – Standards are what we expect students to know in individual

grades.  – Curriculum is how we operationalize those goals into learning.

• Federal and state law require New Jersey students to take an assessment that measures college and career readiness grades 3 through 11.

• PARCC is aligned with the Common Core and more accurately gauges students’ progress in achieving these new standards.

• NJASK incorporated common core concepts in its last two years as a logical step in the transition.

How Can Parents Support Verona Schools with PARCC?

• Please remind your children about getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and doing the best they can!

• Take the online tutorial, sample questions, and practice tests (we will provide that opportunity tonight), and share your problem solving thoughts with your children.

• Be supportive, encouraging, open-minded, and understanding!

• “…we have been able to develop ‘concordant’ cut scores for additional substitute assessments that our schools currently utilize…”

• “For the classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018, students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in both ELA and math by meeting ONE of the criteria in each column below.”

(NJ Department of Education Memo, 12/2014)

Since there is no more HSPA, what test will be used for high school

1. Presentation Accommodations

• If a student is blind, has a visual impairment, or is deaf, then a necessary change in presentation of the PARCC assessment would be necessary.

• Do not worry! If you do not hear from your Child Study Team case manager, this does not apply to your child.

sections, – Utilizes a scribe or dictation

• This means your child needs an additional response accommodation.
