Version 8.0 of the RealPresence Resource Manager introduces a completely new paradigm for provisioning dynamically managed devices. This lab exercise demonstration will show how to configure the new provisioning profiles and provisioning rules of the Resource Manager version 8.0 system.

This lab exercise will focus on creating the provisioning profiles and rules to support the West Region of the fictional Medeatalk organization. Their Polycom infrastructure, as shown here and in the student guide, includes the RealPresence Resource Manager version 8.0 and a DMA supercluster with clusters in the US and Europe. Video endpoints include Group Series and HDX room systems, RealPresence Desktop systems and RealPresence Mobile systems. And, finally Medeatalk employs three RealPresence Access Director systems to provide secure unified communications for the organization.

There are two basic steps to this lab exercise, as outlined in your student guide. The first step is create provisioning profiles to support the West Region Network, Room Systems and the West Region RPAD. The second part of the lab will involve creating two provisioning rules: one to support the West Region and one specifically for Group Series and HDX room systems.

First, let's login to a RealPresence Resource Manager version 8.0 system...

Now let's navigate to Endpoint...

And we'll take the action to Add a new provisioning profile.

Name it West Region Network Profile and keep the type of Network Provisioning Profile. In the Resource Manager version 7 and CMA systems, these settings could be found under the Network Site Provisioning Details.

Navigate to H.323 Settings...

Provide the FQDN...

...of the DMA West system.

Now select SIP Settings...

Uncheck the automatic discovery.

You can quickly see that the Settings options are quite different for an Admin Config Provisioning Profile. In Resource Manager version 7 and the CMA system, these settings were found in Automatic Provisioning Profiles. Let's get started with System Settings...

Change Auto Answer Point-to-Point Calls...

To configure the provisioning settings for the West Region RPAD, navigate to RPAD Server Provisioning.

The final step in our lab exercise is to create the Provisioning Rules necessary to correctly apply the Provisioning Profiles we just created.

Notice the Resource Manager system does not include any Provisioning Rules. This ensures that the two default provisioning profiles that ship with the system are applied to all dynamically managed endpoints. We will start by taking the action to Add a new Provisioning Rule.

Let's name our first rule...

...West Region Provisioning Rule...

...and add a description to show that this rule will be used to provide the appropriate Network Settings for the West Region and will also correctly provision any West Region RPAD systems.

Let's add a condition for the rule.

A sure way to determine if a device is located in the West Region is to specify a condition based on the network topology. This condition will ensure that the network site...

...is equal to....

....the Americas, because this network site has already been created to include the subnet ranges of all North and South American Medeatalk devices.

Click OK to save the new condition.

Now that the condition is set, we can apply the appropriate provisioning profiles. We will start with the Endpoint Provisioning Profiles.

From the list, we will select the West Region Network Profile...

...and use the down arrow icon to move it into the Selected Profiles list.

We can now select the appropriate RPAD Server Provisioning Profile to be applied for West Region devices.

Now let's create a new provisioning rule to apply the correct settings for all of Medeatalk's room systems.

...and the attribute will be device type. The conditions can be as specific as device serial number. Now we will set the value to equal....

Click OK to create this first condition.

First, we need to change the condition relation...

...to "Or" instead of "And" because we want this rule to apply to endoints that are either Group Series endpoints OR HDX endpoints.

We can now select the appropriate Provisioning Profile to be applied once either of these two conditions have been met.

Here are the two provisioning rules we have created to take care of the dynamic provisioning needs of Medeatalk's West Region. Notice there is a priority associated with each rule. Each device can only be provisioned with one Network Provisioning Profile and one Admin Config Provisioning Profile. If a device meets the qualifications for more than one rule, it is this priority that will be used to determine which rule will be enforced. The lower the priority number, the higher the priority of the rule. If, for example, we wanted the Group Series room systems located on the Executive Floor to be dynamically provisioned with higher call speeds and Auto Answer disabled, we could create an Executive Floor Room Systems provisioning profile and then create a provisioning rule to select just those Executive Floor endpoints.

Shown here is the addition of the new Provisioning Rule named Executive Staff Room Systems. The problem, however, is that the priority of this new rule is lower than the Room Systems Provisioning Rule listed above it. Since the Executive Staff all have Group Series endpoints, their endpoints would be provisioned with the Room Systems Provisioning Rule instead of the new Executive Staff Room Systems Rule. To correct this problem, simply take the Priority Up action to raise the priority of this new Provisioning Rule.

Now the Executive Staff Room Systems Provisioning Rule has priority over the more generic Room Systems Provisioning Rule. This will ensure that the Executive Staff endpoints are provisioned correctly and all other Room Systems throughout the organization will receive the standard room systems provisioning profile.

This concludes the lab exercise demonstration to create the provisioning profiles and rules to support the West Region of the fictional Medeatalk organization.

We completed two basic steps in this lab exercise. First, we created provisioning profiles to support the West Region Network, Room Systems and the West Region RPAD. The second part of the lab involved creating two provisioning rules: one to support the West Region and one specifically for Group Series and HDX room systems.
