Veterans Day Programs
MMJH will provide three Veterans Day programs over the course of two days, November 9 &
11, to honor those who have served in our country’s military. The 6th grade social studies classes will
listen to U.S. Army veteran/MMJH teacher Alvaro de Hoyas in the library on November 9 about his mili-
tary service. The 7th graders will go to the cafeteria on November 11 from 9:05-10:00 am to attend the
“Honoring Our Heroes” assembly. The band, choir, orchestra, and advanced theater arts students will
perform. A special reception for veterans and their families will follow in the Theatre Arts room. If you
are a veteran, please RSVP to 281-237-8119 if you plan to attend. The 8th grade social studies classes
will listen to Young Audiences of Houston guest speaker John Keahey in the library on November 11
about the American Revolutionary War soldiers, which supplements their curriculum.
To all of our veterans, especially our school’s namesake, World War II and Korean War veter-
an/former KISD administrator Garland McMeans, we thank you for your service!
Interesting Facts
Veterans Day does not include an apostrophe but does include an "s" at the end of "veterans" be-
cause it is not a day that "belongs" to veterans. It is a day for honoring all veterans.
Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and
honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in
battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remem-
bered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the
military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veter-
ans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciat-
ed, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed
and done their duty.

Author Joelle Charbonneau Is Coming Back to MMJH!
Joelle Charbonneau, the author of The Testing and last school year’s Read It Forward book, will visit our campus on Thursday, No-
vember 12, to discuss her new book, NEED, and to share her thoughts about writing. To reserve a seat, you can preorder any of her
books by filling out the order form below and turning it in to the library staff by 7:30 am on November 12. The students loved her
presentation last May, and she is looking forward to visiting our school again. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!
"No one gets something for nothing. We all should know better."
Teenagers at Wisconsin's Nottawa High School are drawn deeper into a so-
cial networking site that promises to grant their every need . . . regardless of
the consequences. Soon the site turns sinister, with simple pranks escalating
to malicious crimes. The body count rises. In this chilling YA thriller, the au-
thor of the best-selling Testing trilogy examines not only the dark side of so-
cial media, but the dark side of human nature.

Student iPad Checkout Information
Katy ISD is excited to provide the opportunity for our students to take home a digital device for learning.
A student can check out an iPad to use for a school assignment for a one week period, excluding the
Winter and Spring Breaks. The student’s parent or legal guardian must first meet with the assistant prin-
cipal to review the KISD Student/Parent Equipment Use Agreement and sign it along with the student.
This document will be kept on file for the current school year. The student will be instructed on proper
use and care of the borrowed equipment. Please call the school at 281-237-8000 to set up an appoint-
ment.
Katy ISD is proud to introduce the Technology Information for Parents site. This site in-
cludes video tutorials on technology that students utilize everyday including MyKaty
Cloud and Canvas.
